After every session , as a white belt, I come away going what the hell was I supposed to do in situation X . Last night it was "how do I attack a seated open guard'. I'm getting comfortable escaping closed guard and attacking from that position but when the guy knows 6 ways to tie me up I fail every time to even try passing a seated open guard. I was trying to push them to their back every time to get to a place where I have some idea how to attack, lol . Anyhow - every session I hit a new road block and this is the first place I end up to move forward. Amazing channel.
Thanks Jon. I can’t tell you how frustrated I’ve been over the last couple of months because of this. At our school, we don’t usually start sparring session with both on the feet going takedowns. Therefore, someone will opt to play a sit up guard and I’ve been racking my brain on how to get into a more dominant position from the onset of the match. Very timely. Thanks!!
Yeah it’s a tricky one because it’s so much easier for the bottom player to set up some kind of an annoying guard than it is for you to get a full pass in. Hopefully this helps you in your fight.
@@JonThomasBJJI used to walk straight into someone’s dangerous guard without thinking 💭 - your point about backing up is important as you don’t want to just give a guard player his grips - it’s like when you’re on bottom sometimes you can get back to your knees or just sit up…took me a while to figure that out - too obvious 😂
Needed this video so badly. Just getting back to training and felt like I knew nothing when it came to passing guard this is a great reminder thanks coach!
Thank you for this. I am having a hard time attacking sitting guard as a white belt who is more used to pulling guard. Your videos are helping me a lot, and I am exciting to put some reps in with these. Thanks again!
I appreciate your videos. One of your videos helped me stack one of the black belts at my gym. I didn’t pass him, but I still stacked him, and then he ankle hooked me twice and D’arced me twice.
Thanks for this! Tried this at open mat tonight and it helped a ton having multiple attack options. The option w lapel and paint grip worked best for me
thanks jon, i encountered this situation alot in my school. the instructor has yet to teach this so ive been blindly doing whatever i can during rolling
Super helpful! So many guard pass videos start with the opponent on their back, and no one in my gym starts that way so I feel stuck and just get caught and tangled.
Yeah it’s a really key position to understand I certainly did focus on it enough over last few years. When you break it down we’ll make you approach the guard with much more confidence
Love the videos. This one seemed to have a lot of little edits that kept distracting me, fyi. Could just be me though. Keep up the awesome content either way
This is great! I’m just gonna have to watch it like 8 more times to digest all the information 😊. BTW, Steve Menke references you a lot when he’s teaching techniques.
Great video thanks! Can u please make one for NoGi? I can see number 1 and 5 being used in NoGi, but if you could do a full NoGi 5 passes from this position that would be great🙏🏻 thanks!
Great video. Obviously your lost here isn’t meant to be exhaustive, but I’d also add long-step and pendulum passes, especially as continuations from knee-cuts.
I’ve always struggled recovering my guard when I’m on a headquarters, split squat or knee cut position. If you want to make a video it would be great :)
Thank you for the terrific instruction. When I leg drag, a few of my team mates throw the opposite leg over without over committing it, landing their foot somewhere midline between my pelvis and chest, and recover an open guard. Any advise on where to go next? Nothing seems to click for me even though I’ve been shown a few things. Thanks for any help, professor. And thank you again for the great video.
Thank you for the instructions, one thing I encountered frequently is people grab my sleeve the moment I reach out and then I either try to pass with one sleeve is grabbed or end up with two sleeves are caught, Wonder how to avoid this situation?
You keep distance to avoid them getting the other sleeve and if they grip 1 sleeves this can work in your favor since u can arm bar them but usually them grabbing ur arm is nothing to worry about
So helpful man! I feel comfortable attacking the guard when the person is lying down but the seated guard is always a pain. Could you cover gaining the second hook from back control? I have a particular training partner who is very very hard to score full back takes on, I always end up with the bottom hook and seatbelt but they're doing that running man defense and just blocking the top hook with their life and turtling when I try to reset them. Thanks!
I have to play a lot of no gi just because that's how it worked out :( so I would love to see this in a no gi variation. I mean I can kind of extrapolate to some extent but it would be nice to see some options. Thanks.
Great video! I’ve been training about three months as a white belt and I’ve found it super difficult to get passed guard when my opponent is sitting like this. Is it normal for the upper belts to start rolls like this? I’ve noticed usually with blue and purple belts they automatically start in this position and it’s up to me to pass their guard.
Blue and purple is when most schools will have them focus a lot on open guard, and by sitting into open guard you can start playing it immediately, plus they're probably lazy or don't know takedowns lol.
@@JonThomasBJJ Hey Jon, yes it's the pass where you use your knee. The person first stiff arms your arms, and then they stand up and use their knee to split your legs, and they also put their hands on your hips to do this. In gi, I just go to de la Riva guard. Would you do the same for no gi?
Also, I struggle with the sit down position while the opponent is standing. If the guy knows anything i get passed like nothing. A video on this subject would be cool

There's a nice rolling loop choke from seated guard as well :)

I love playing open guard so now I know better what to expect as counters 😊
Thanks so much mate. Not enough content about how to start a roll. This is bloody great 🙏🏻🇦🇺💪🏻
Needed this video so badly. Just getting back to training and felt like I knew nothing when it came to passing guard this is a great reminder thanks coach!
My coach is a brown belt and pro mma fighter and he totally bodied me from seated guard last night so I've rewatched this like 4 times
Hows it going now?
Fr did you quit?
Lol 😂
Great 👍🏼 stuff - would love to see a comparable video on passing same positions in No Gi (even though I prefer Gi)…
I love the level and delivery of information. It is simple, concise and explains all the details I need. One of the best bjj channels.
Great stuff as always! Thank you for sharing. You have the most clear and understandable instructionals on youtube.
Thanks so much buddy means a lot! I try to make the videos efficient and useful always

Man this is literally what I've been struggling with lately. Thank you so much!!!
No problem!!
I'm really appreciating these videos. As a relative beginner these are very helpful.
Exactly the content I’ve been after the last 2 months, Thankyou!
Thanks for the video ❤ a was trying long time ago to find a solution for this guard
Great content, the initial context of different sitting guards is very helpful. Well explained, looking forward to trying this
Great instruction as always. Looking forward to more in the new year!
More will be coming! Thanks so much!
Thanks Jon. I give up grips way too easily when I'm passing seated guard. This content has given a good foundation to work with
Literally was looking for a video by you on this earlier today. And now this appears. Thank god!
Happy it came just in time :)
@@JonThomasBJJ finding it very hard to deal with aggresive seated guard players lately so cheers for the tips !
Thanks Jon. I remember our white belt Team Vaghi days!
Thanks as always for the great content
My next open mat is going to be very different now. Thank your helping a one month white belt.
Great techniques and nice instruction videos. I have learned a lot from passing seated guard in a single video.
Yeah it’s a really key position to understand I certainly did focus on it enough over last few years. When you break it down we’ll make you approach the guard with much more confidence
Passing this guard is hard for me against a bigger and or stronger opponent. I'm also considered big. I'm definitely going to use these techniques
Hope this helps buddy! Appreciate the message
Thank you

THANK YOU! White belt here that keeps getting immediately submitted with opponent in seated hahahaha. pray for me.
Hey fellow white belt. Me too.
Thanks for teaching

Steve’s the man! I wouldn’t be training or where I’m at today without him and his son Jon! Miss them a lot!
This is great summary, and inspiration for next session 😊
Hope it helps in the next session!

Amazing tips man Thanks!!!
Thanks!
This was really helpful.
Thanks for detailed explanation 👍
No problem happy to help!
Thanks bro 😅
Great video!
I’d like to see some of your entries into leg locks.👍🏼
Lovely stuff Professor 🙏

Yeah those for sure are excellent combos to add in to passing seated guard positioning!

You are always teaching exactly what I need the most! How about a no gi version of this ?
You’re amazing

Surfer guard pass is my favorite. Been hitting it since this summer. Unstoppable, unless the opponent kicks you in the face.😅
Kicks in the face can always make it hard to pass lol
Awesome
Thank you!
Do you have any videos on how to pass when your both seated?
Can you use the low pull in response to a quick guard pull?
Hi coach does the tornado pass work on nogi ?

Hey Jon, do you know how to counter the Log splitter pass?
Hey buddy which pass is that? Is it where they open closed guard with knee in center?

Ok cool. I'll check it out thanks
Jon where are you located? I’d like to do some privates this summer. Where can I reach you?
Hi Jon, happy holidays! Any passing tips when your partner gets to shin-to-shin position first? :)
For sure I did a video a long time ago on it but I can do another one soon!
Thank you! I must have not been a subscriber yet when you did the video. I watch all of your videos and categorize every single one to playlists 😁

Attack!!
Yup!!
I love your content & enjoy your coaching style. Thank you for all you share!

I was excited until I realized to do primairly no gi :(
