The MOST Important Guard Passing Principle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Hip pinning is one of the two most foundational methods of controlling an opponent in side control. Since we often are fighting our opponents legs before we pass the guard, focusing on pinning the hips first makes the goal so much easier as their leg moblity and movment is significantly restricted, and as we pass our ooponents hips already being on the floor makes the finish and control in side so much easier.

Concept (or principle) videos are THE most beneficial. Thank you for the content & well put together videos, you're leaving your mark on Jiu Jitsu one video at a time.
Thanks so much, I want to do some really big foundational videos on core positions and things like. The DLR hook, The Knee Slice, Pinning, ect
I agree!! These are the most beneficial and useful to start applying. Thanks a lot and greetings from Argentina.
thank you for videos like this. as a white belt, i find it hard to memorize certain techniques but understanding principles allows me to be a bit more successful in sparring.
Yes agree, breaking down the principles is teaching us how to fish, instead of feeding us techniques
I just came to the comments to say exactly this.
Seriously- you make the BEST content for my style of learning. I’m a newbie white belt so understanding principles is much easier to remember than a 1000 variations of moves. Keep up the awesome work!
I will for sure! What videos do you think helped you the most so far?
it seems like i share the same opinions with most of the commenters :) looking forward to more videos like this. greetings from the Philippines
Hey man how is your progress?
Superb - been unconsciously doing this for years without really linking it to the tailbone specifically.
Yeah I think a lot of things we do subconsciously and when we realize it logically you focus on it a lot more.
Damn bruh didn’t know you did jiu jitsu
Completely newbie here ( only a month in to my BJJ journey) and this makes perfect sense. Can’t wait to hit the mat tomorrow!
As a brand-new white belt, I really appreciate these videos. Concepts are better for me right now than techniques, and the 10-minute overviews are a perfect length; enough info to digest I'll want to watch it again, but I can begin to apply the principles now. Thank you for the great content!
same
Your previous video on escaping side control has already helped me with the concept of keeping the hips up while inserting the knee. I’m on a mission to become an escape artists. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you red haired Jesus
Our Lord and Savior be Praised. He saved my from my guard passing sins.
Ginge Jesus teachin’ me more than I’ve learned in the past 6 months at class 😅
Thank you, Jon. This was the situation I was stuck in rolling with a brown belt yesterday. I'm 50 years old and a purple belt and I always had a hard time passing bottom guys. Will definitly try this in the next training session.
My guard and passing is terrible
This dude just keeps dropping gems
I've been looking for this type of content for a long time, and came across your videos randomly. Your teaching style is wonderful. It is hard as a newbie to follow the 1234 steps taught for a very specific position. Instead, learning the principles helps me stay on course as I roll, knowing the mechanics of the positions.
THANK YOU
Fantastic concept, will definitely take this into rolls.
wow..very very enlightening!!!..will definitely start focusing on this applying these principles..going to test in tomorrows sparring...many many thanks..keep it coming.
No problem hope the sparring goes well, and you see the patterns
Great video Jon. The V.O. with slow motion really locks the concepts in for me. Easier to digest compared to real time.
Always enjoy your content and breakdowns. Appreciate the work.
Yeah it has been fun playing with using this feature. Especially mixing in comp clips. I like to get clips from in the gym too, but it’s hard to always recreate and get a realistic response filming in time to release video, so I use comp clips a lot.
Very good stuff, thank you. Subscribed!
Brand new white belt here. Your videos have helped me so much! I have hit some of your techniques in class and it feels amazing!!
Gold advise ! Thank you, I'll give it a try
This is so dang good! Easily one of the best conceptual videos I've seen in a long time. Thank you for sharing!
LOVE THIS! I have been trying to include more at-home study into my training, but it is extremely overwhelming to try to wade through the sea of technique videos on the internet. These concept/principle videos are so helpful! Thanks for the amazing content! ❤👊
No problem! Happy this saves you the time. There is lots of techniques out there so some of the big picture stuff can really put it all together for you!
Great content. Concepts are not talked about enough, this is excellent keep posting.
I loved your comment about how new people have their tailbone on the floor and how it inhibits movement. This is rarely discussed even in the most “basic” video series, even the really good ones.
I’m a crappy blue belt coming back after a long time and a training partner pointed this out to me.
This is SO basic and if you could do a whole video on this alone I think that would be incredible. Basically on the shape your body has to be in to move from bottom position on the ground. A training partner called it like a “dreidel”
Great video, I'll have to try this tonight
This is pretty game-changing stuff. Subscribed!
Thanks buddy happy you found the video and my content!
Such a useful principle. I've found your passing concepts so good on the mat
Thanks so much! The principles really change a lot! Be sure to check out my lasso passing video gonna post today on second channel
Now I know how to pass the bullies who lay down at the start of every single rolling rounds
Thank you Thomas!
Always awesome stuff man. Hope to come across you in Halifax when I'm there throughout the year!
Hope to see you there. I will be visiting soon with espen too!
Excellent; this will help everywhere!
Yeah when I understood this it really changed how I saw the guard and passing in general
Great content as always. You have an ability to go into depth and still be crystal clear. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks so much happy you see the value in the depth. To me that’s what makes jiu jitsu the most fun.
Love this concept! I use it in a intuitive way, but knowing the supporting theory is so much better
Thanks for the shin control to run aroung north south. That dam problem where they scrunch their knees to their chest against my toreondo was driving me crazy.
Yeah really paying attention to the knees being tight to the chest and the tailbone up is a huge factor in your decision making for passing.
Great concept thank you! I could’ve used this last night 😂
This made me understand why my guard retention sux!
I've really been struggling with my partners re-guarding after a successful pass. I knew I was leaving too much space, but I wasn't too sure what exactly I was doing wrong. This video sums it up perfectly. I feel like I should have understood these concepts already, and I think I did, in an abstract way, but this really helped bring the concepts together in a way that I can incorporate them into my game. Ty
Long time subscriber, first time commenter. I am so grateful for your content and this was one of your clearest and most helpful videos. Beyond that, I have to say that it was so refreshing, in this video, that you didn't use UPSPEAK! Thanks for that.
Hey buddy thanks so much, happy you finally commented! What exactly is upseak? Want to make videos better all the time.
Just looked it up! I’ll pay more attention to it. One thing with doing videos it really makes you relook at how you normally talk and express your self. Thanks for the feedback buddy
First time watching ur vid.
Subbed. Great concept video with concise explanations. Thanks for great vids

Thank so so much! Was fun making and excited to brainstorm what the next topic will be! Should post on second channel today on lasso passing
Wow I learned so much in this video.
Very helpful for this blue belt.
Happy to hear it helped!
Awesome advice as usual 🤙🤙🤙

Thanks so much for this, very valuable insight
Thanks for the amazing video! It is useful. Can’t wait to apply it on the mat
Hope it works well for you, it’s really something to understand that will impact how you learn every other pass over the years
awesome tips, ill be sure to try these out asap!
Great video! Thank you!
Great video! Been subbed here, but also subbed to the second channel. Love the theory and mechanics behind the techniques. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Will be dropping video on passing lasso on second channel today!
There are a few things I do pretty well, but I don't know how to explain them to my teammates. I think you may have just explained one of them, I'll have to play around later and see if this is what I'm doing.
Great details. Thank you 💪
Thanks and appreciate the support!
Love the principal content
Me too they are fun to make and brainstorm
Awesome ..thanks
Great content and concise. I learned a lot
Loved this video. Very helpful
tailbone pin--> if it is very high : shoulder pin =overstack
A m a z i n g videos! 🙏🏼
Great informative video! Liked the Format of the video by the way.
Thanks so much! Been working hard to figure out how to evolve the style of content to be entertaining and informative
Another fantastic video 🤙🏻
Thank you so much!
Extremely helpful
God this is such good info
Yo 6:04 was bananas.
This guy looks like what I would imagine Shanks from One Piece to look like IRL lmao!
Great content as usual. Thanks for sharing and jus keep on it! 🙏👊🤙
Will definitely stay at it, lots of big ideas coming for the future
@@JonThomasBJJ that's awesome and we'll be along for the ride. There are a lot of us in the community who really appreciate and support what you do! Take care man 🙏🌎🤙
5:41 🔥 🔥 🔥
Awesome principle Jon! The video showcases a high level of intelligence in its technical breakdown and step-by-step instructions.
Thanks so much means a lot! Honestly making them always forces me to think way deeper about my understanding and I evolve a lot.
Your vids are awesome very helpful. Really appreciate the concept driven approach.
This is dope
Quality video
I can't find his second channel
J.Daneher Jr.
great vid but what speaker is that? the flames interface kinda sick for a training sesh
Hahah I think it’s actually called the party box 3000 or something like that. It’s pretty aweosme
Golden
Wow okay.
The smartest way to pass guard is actually to stand up and use spinning and dropping passes because you have full body momentum and drop pressure, while it's considered dangerous and unsportsmanlike in Brazilian jiu-jitsu rolling it's definitely the most efficient and explosive way to blast past a Man's legs and also highly entertaining to the crowd which of course makes a big difference in an athletic contest, Kazushi Sakuraba is likely the best example of this guard passing Theory but it will make you unpopular at the strip mall because traditional Brazilian jiu-jitsu butt scooters want you to stick your head between their legs and Scoot so they can get armbars and triangles...😆

If only your grappling skills translated to Tekken....
Lol tekken use to be my game too
This shouldn't be free content.
Thanks buddy really appreciate you like it that much. I have a few courses up on my site now and more coming soon. I’m happy to help with these kind of videos and if people really want to go deep I have even more content there.
#bewater
Bro ur knowledgeable but tbh I wouldn’t trust u alone around kids mane
Why would you comment something like this
Control their tailbone and control your tailbone. Thank you sir!
Getting this info for free feels like I'm stealing it 😏
I think I prefer this style of video because you’re able to talk on concepts from different angles and in slow-mo so much better and I can grasp the move better.
HOLY FUCK the hip pinning! I've realized why I suck at guard retention... I am flat as fuck with my hips, I'm pinning myself. Absolutely focus on showing us the principles.
What's your advice for a gym that doesn't use gi's for controlling the legs to lock down the tailbone. We wear board shorts.
I stumbled upon your vid when I really need it the most, there are days when I reacted too slowly and got into a guard immediately and just spend half of the rolling mins exerting so much energy to get out of it and sometimes I really blanked out and can't recall the right technique to use, but fundamental like this allow me to maybe at least focus on one thing at a time and may allow me to shut down/minimize the danger presented. Thanks for this awesome content!
@7:38 wow that's a pretty good example, literally like springing a trap
Nice, learned a thing or two! Thanks
Have you done a video on knee-on-belly escapes?
pure gold
Thanks!!
There are so many great gems in this single video if we focus on it!! Thank you so much for so many useful tips and concepts!
No problem! Yeah the these big concepts have Trickel down affects on all positions, so it’s really useful to underhand them. This one was huge for me.
@@JonThomasBJJ totally agree
Great conceps man!
Thus guys a great teacher
john u r the goat
Holy! the principle behind how techniques work rates the greatest pillars to learn, thank you!
