  • Texas is a massive state and it is hard to do it justice in one road trip. My dad and I spent 14 days exploring the state and made a full road trip video you can see below. If you want to experience Texas, we made this video to provide some suggestions on how to best make the most of your time in the Lone Star state. Be sure to let us know what we left off in the comments!

Advice from a native Texan: plan your visit between October and March, especially if you're headed into central and south Texas. "Winter" is mild, and you won't be miserable from the heat and humidity.
As for BBQ, its good pretty much everywhere. My favorite spot is Lockhart, TX, a little town a short trip south from Austin. You skip all the traffic and wait times of the cities.
Fredericksburg to the west of Austin has some amazing German bakeries, and the drive out there is laid back and beautiful. If you're visiting Enchanted Rock, you'll be headed out this direction anyway.

I actually lived in TX for 20 yrs and thought I knew where to visit but you 2 came up with some amazing stops. Guess I’ll have to go back again as it was a favorite state to live/visit. Your dad is really coming into his own with the great humor he is adding to these travels. Keep up the good work guys!

South Texas Starter Pack: Gristmill Restaurant in Gruene. Ray Harmon's BBQ in Cibolo. Hays City Store & Ice House & Trattoria Lisina in Driftwood. Clear Springs Restaurant in New Braunfels. Chris Madrids burgers and dessert at Paciugo Gelato Cafe in San Antonio. Most of those have outdoor seating.

When we lived there, Dandy Don Meredith, the former Cowboys quarterback, did ads for a Texas insurance company, advising the locals to buy the insurance from them, as an East Coast insurance company would not understand that a Sunday drive could be a 500-mile journey in Texas. Great tips and video as always guys!

Awesome tips for sure! I've been a Texan since 1996....and I still haven't seen the entire state. Been to most areas by now though. I've learned of a few BBQ places via Josh and Pop's adventures. Looking forward to trying Goldee's and Cattleack BBQ sometime soon! Oh my top BBQ mention, is not on the list here for some reason....interesting. But if you're in the North Dallas area, check out Hutchins BBQ in Frisco and McKinney!! Gotta try a Texas Twinkie and don't forget the awesome sides!! Love me some Mac and Cheese and Potato Casserole.

Nice job guys, but a few other places to look at. Include a trip to far South Texas (the Valley) to see the places around Brownsville (you might catch a SpaceX launch at Boca Chica), check out one of the great birding hot spots on the Texas coast from Brownsville to Sea Rim. Or you can see huge flocks of Sandhill crans in the panhandle near Muleshoe.

I've been to several different areas in TX, over a 37 year timeline and I've never seen a Buckee's! All year I've been hearing about this place. Got to find one next time I'm in the state. I loved Palo Duro Canyon and Big Bend is top of my list.

Texas! I wasn’t born here but as soon as I got here I knew I was home! I turned down some good jobs to stay in Texas. Don’t want to live anywhere else and already know where I will be buried. I have been all over the US of A and many parts of the world. There is no better place than Texas! God Blessed Texas! By the way, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin ain’t Texas anymore! If you want to see the real Texas stay out of the big cities. Unfortunately even San Antonio has fallen from Grace and become too cosmopolitan! Get off the interstates and on to the State Roads and Farm to Market Roads. Stop and visit with real people, real Texans along the way! They will treat you like kin and talk your ear off! Like I said, God Blessed Texas by putting a little heaven on earth and He called it TEXAS!

Buccee's? Seriously? That's what passes for culture in Texas? It's very, very low brow. A truck stop on steroids. And their barbecue? Meh. Heavy, loaded with fat and smoke and unhealthy sides. Look, I like Texans. My wife was born and raised there. But the cowboy culture? And the often horrible weather? Not for me.
