Drone Landscape Photography Tips and Techniques | DJI Mavic Pro Tutorial

  • If you’ve watched my videos before, you’ll know that I love taking landscape images with any camera like my DSLR, mirrorless camera or even my iPhone. But there’s another camera I use for landscape photography that gives me a perspective I can’t easily get with any of my other cameras and that’s my Mavic Pro.
For 10% off your first purchase at Squarespace, go to www.squarespace...
Drones are getting cheaper and more accessible. While I initially bought the Mavic Pro to improve the content I create for this channel, I soon realised the power DJI built into this small package for capturing stills. But in this video, I'm going to take you through how I capture landscape photos using my Mavic Pro.
So out of all the drones available when I bought this, I went with the Mavic Pro, because I think that’s the sweet spot between image quality and portability. As I mentioned before, one of the advantages the drone has over any other camera I have in my hand is I can get this up in the air easily for that unique perspective. This opens up another dimension for telling a story, new angles on a landscape and different compositions.
Speaking of composition, I also have a lot more freedom when positioning the drone and composing my image. I’m not restricted by cliffs, hills or a lack of access because there are no paths.
Before we get going, let’s quickly check the settings to make sure we have the best image quality. I have the image size set to 4:3 for the greatest resolution possible using all of that sensor - this gives me the option to crop a little later if I need to. I always shoot in Manual mode. ISO should be 100 for maximum image quality. I also like to shoot in RAW and DJI provides us with that option under Image Format.
With those settings, we’re are now ready to fly and capture some landscape images!

Blew my own socks off with my first AEB HDR picture with no photography experience and only a week of owning my new Mavic. I have no business making pictures that look good enough for a magazine but here we are.
Great vid! deffo incorporate this advise into my growing arsenal.

Your previsualization on the scene that you've taken shows that you've very sharp mind that able to see the beauty of any landscape that many others may not able to see beyond a plain landscape that doesn't have anything to impress at first sight. Some may have the best tools in photography or videography but do not have an eye and mind like yours will be ashamed. I'm ashamed and thank for the eye opening presentation. Bravo!

Here is a couple of suggestions I would like DJI to incorporate.
    1. In the "P" mode have ALL collision sensors turn on or make it in the menu what collision sensors you can activate. This would keep you from flying sideways in a tree.
    2. I would like to swap the settings in "LEFT" gimbal dial so I would rotate it to the "right" to point the camera down and rotate it "LEFT" to bring the camera back up.

Great video and nice tips. The only thing you didn’t mention which I feel is really important was about switching to portrait mode and stitching. I would ALWAYS do this. Take you first shot for example.... if you turn to portrait mode then take 2 or 3 shots and stitch them together you overcome the fact the mavic only has a 12mp sensor. You can still bracket each of these shots. When in LR first convert each batch of 5 bracketed shots to HDR then when you have 3 HDR dng’s you stick these together in LR as a pano. This gets you a much higher res image.

Hello from Gippsland Andrew, on to my third drone... phantom 2, phantom 3 now Mini 2. The small package is the way to go. The phantom 2 is worth 0. The 3 is a good unit for particular applications. I love the aspect you can get with a drone.
Sometimes it’s good enough to be just 5 or 10 meters up and gives you like 10m tripod. Excellent content 👍🏻 and from a land down under...! Not the fells in the lakes district!! Cheers 👍🏻🍷❤️🇦🇺
