Hello Michael Hello !A very good time to start your ambitious project.E R B was the unacknowledged originator of the Man of Steel according to Grant Morrison's SUPERHEROES. I have a rare copy of Tarzan of the Apes published in June 1914 by Grosset &Dunlap Publishers New York. Part of my Father's Bookshelves. Thanks for your video Michael.

I've read about 50% of the Martian novels, most of the Pellucidar books, 1/3 of the Tarzan series, but I have yet to tackle any of Edgar Rice Burroughs' lesser--known works.
Michael, thank you for keeping ERB's writings alive through your video. Continue to spread the word to those fans out there! And all the best with your "deep dive" endeavor! 😁😸📚📖👍

The only ERB I've ever tried was the Penguin Classics edition of 'A Princess of Mars a few years ago, and I stopped reading around fifteen pages in - finding I just couldn't get into it. But, I have a feeling it was because I wasn't in the mood for it at the time. Sometimes my inability to connect with a book or an author isn't the fault of said book(s) or said author(s), but rather my mood and mindset are to blame. I like adventure stories, and ERB is so popular and beloved by bookish people whose opinions I respect so I'm feeling guilty or rather that I'm clearly missing out. I remain intrigued by ERB as an author and by the types of stories he wrote, but maybe I'd approached the material incorrectly and need to give him another try. I'll be following your deep dive regardless. Fascinated as always.

What you're doing with Edgar Rice Burroughs is something I started with Robert E. Howard several years ago. It's kind of rough with Howard...Not because it's not fun, but because he wrote SOOOO many stories! Every time I think I'm close to reading them all, I find ten more. Which is good, because I never get tired of them.
I intend to do the same thing with Burroughs eventually. I probably have more of a full set of them than I think I do. Like you, I tend to buy all the different copies I find in stores, so I have a shelf full. All of the Tarzans, most of the Mars books, and a good stash of the others, especially since a thrift store in my town put a bunch on sale because all of the covers looked similar and they wanted to move them out.
I read some of the Mars books when I was a kid, so I am curious to see how I would like them now. I would probably appreciate them more now, to be honest. Not sure about Tarzan. I always liked the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan flicks, so I'm curious how I would feel about the books.
This year, I did a deep dive on Brian Lumley and Piers Anthony. I hear the chuckling about Anthony...I will say I much prefer Lumley's work on the Necroscope books to his Cthulhu Mythos work. The Necroscope books have a...Vileness about them that gives you a true sense of impending horror. His Mythos books don't really capture the horror of the situations well. They bring Cthulhu and his cohorts too close to view and make them just seem like run-of-the-mill bad guys. And when he tries to show something awe-inspiring, it just kind of comes across as corny. But in the Necroscope books, he really found his voice and I would still say they're his masterworks. As to Anthony....I loved his work as an adolescent. Maybe it was just because it tends to be wish fulfillment about awkward guys having how girls fall over them and it speaks to an adolescent mindset. Now, it just feels like his work repeats itself over and over. And I can see it in a different light. In this case, not so much of a good way. When people criticize it, I was coming to his defense a lot. But now that I'm reading it as an adult, it's just kind of creepy how sleazy most of the main characters are. Some of the books are worse than others, but in a lot of cases, the heroes would be the villains in other people's work.

Your observation on age and re-visiting favorite book series was meaningful; I've had the same thought re-reading series from my younger years. Taking the time to re-read multi-volume series just isn't going to happen as much, and the warm memories will have to suffice.
I look forward to your videos on ERB. I only ever read Princess of Mars and Tarzan of the Apes, but all through the 70's and 80's, ERB books were always prominent in the sci-fi/fantasy sections of the local bookstores. Those covers you showed were familiar even without reading the books.

First, thanks you for this video, brings back wonderful memories. Edgar Rice Burroughs is 1 of my top 10 writers of all time (I spent too many years with him for this not to be true), and Tarzan is my favorite written fictional character even to this day.
My very first visit to our public library in what was then a very small town, would start this love affair. My dad took me to get my very own library card and as a new member I was allowed to check out 2 books the first time. They turned out to be THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster and TARZAN AND THE ANT MEN by ERB (the library had the great Ballantine black editions with the awesome artwork). I loved both books but was now obsessed with Tarzan. And that would lead me down the long trail of Edgar Rice Burroughs. So, once again, thanks for that memory.

Michael, this was a very nice stroll down ERB memory lane. Thank you. I also began my ERB reading with the Mars books, then read everything by him, except the Tarzan books. I would not read them because of the terrible movies. Actually the movies were ok, but not ERB at all. Finally after many years i read the first Tarzan and was enthralled! Simply amazing! One note, Lupoff’s book is terrific, but there is a better one, Barsoom: ERB and the Martian vision, it was originally published by Mirage Press in 1976 i believe. I reprinted it in my Gryphon Books line as a Trade paperback with dust jacket in 2003 i think. It has a great George Barr cover too! Looking forward to your ERB deep dive and your comments. I like that you look at work and take into consideration the year or era it was published. Many of these books ate over 100 years old now - but they still hold up damn well! All best to you.

We mad a trip to Boston not long after and dad took us to a huge bookstore. I bought Tarzan of the Apes as my first ever paperback. It introduced me to the idea that truth and honesty were things to live by. I doubt Mr Bouroughs intended to be a mentor to to an eleven year old from 1947 but it worked out for me. I recently watched Tarzan The Ape Man (1932) with Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan, on UA-cam. Tarzan himself was de-emphasized in the movie. It seems as if they didn't trust Johnny to act; he probably had just emerged from his Olympic swimming championship and had never acted before. One of the commenters said that all of the good parts were excised, which is a shame. Still, I found the movie surprisingly horrific. Worth checking out.

I just did a few calculations to figure out how this project might work. The bottom line is that it seems like you'll have to read about 75 pages a day, 7 days a week, for 6 months, to get through the 88 novels listed in wikipedia's selected ERB bibliography. (I don't know how much of his work is not included in that list.) It's slightly less than a book every other day.
Unless you're a fast reader, I think that means you'll have to set aside at least a couple hours every day for the project.
My ADHD would never let me do that, lol. Hope it goes well for you - Good luck!

I can't help but wonder if some of ERB's more common tropes might wear on you a little. Especially the one where a guy finds himself in an unfamiliar place, where he meets a beautiful woman, who he manages to offend due to the language barrier, and cultural differences. Then she gets kidnapped, and he has to rescue her. After which they become a couple. ERB did that a lot! 🙂

But man, he wrote the _heck_ out of that plot! One of my favorite authors as a young teen.

Some erb series deserve some TV adaptations. And if even done right they could intertwine the universe. If successful could give us new unique stories with Erb approval.
Tarzan and John Carter on Venus? Tarzan in Mars? John Carter in hollow earth?

Great video! But, a "Deep Dive" and not..."Burrowing into Burroughs"?

I was cool with this video until you started talking about how we have more time behind us than in front of us which hit home because today is my 64th birthday 😢

I am 74 and I read every ERB book except Tarzan. I started with A Princess of Mars. I only read Tarzan of the Apes a couple years ago but could not continue. It just wasn't that interesting to me. The only time it was; was when he went to Pellucidar.
