The Oakdale Affair is not a Western, I think. I only read it once & don't remember much. Recently it was published in a single volume with The Mucker & it's sequel. It says it's a "Mucker adjacent" book. I remember thinking it was a mystery set in California. It was the 1970s & I was 12. I should read it again, like you. Love your channel! My husband & I always watch your videos! Love your sense of humor. Hope Roger stops eating the help.

Another fantastic episode, Michael! It makes me want to do a follow-up pretty soon. I do like that hardcover version of ERB: The Man Who Created Tarzan. I have it in the two-volume paperback set, and I really enjoyed it!

I just like to watch you hold up old book covers. Richard Powers was big during the heyday of Science Fiction; I bet you have other covers of his beyond that Tarzan series. His covers were on quite a few 50's and 60's anthologies and classic authors like Asimov, Sturgeon and Doc Smith. As a comics fan, I know him for the first couple of covers on the old Dr. Solar series that Gold Key put out. He had that geometric/near abstract 50's style that was considered modern at the time.

Yeah, another ERB episode! I just finished a second read of Chessman of Mars, which was fantastic. Kinda reminded me of Wizard's Chess in Harry Potter. Anyway, my next two Tarzan are the official ERB library editions of Tarzan the Terrible and Tarzan and the Golden Lion, which i look forward to. I also have The Land that Time Forgot in a big volume. Of course, i also have the first two Pellucidar books and I've sadly never read those, which I'll have to change this year.

Great video! I read a few ERB books when I was younger. About a decade ago, when I was going to a city close to me with a great bookstore, I was buying up the Tarzan series. I think I have them all now. A few years later, I bumped into a bunch of the random ones at a local thrift store. The Efficiency Expert stands out to me. And when I'm at a local used bookstore, I tend to pick up the Ace editions when they have them. Long story short, I need to start reading these again. Most of what I've read has been the Barsoom series, so I've got a lot of work to do.

  • @Grendelbc
    @Grendelbc 7 місяців тому +2

I think I read all the Tarzan books by the time I was 12. The Barsoom stuff followed and then some others. The Mucker was a good one. I went back and tried the first 2 Tarzan novels recently and they feel really dated. The early 1900s were a very different time, lol.
When I was in 6th grade the nuns gave me a day off school to help our small town library move to a new location. The old building was scheduled for demolition. They threw out a LOT of old books. I took quite a few home including first and second editions of all the Tarzan books. I still have them in a box up in the attic.

You have inspired me to re-read the Tarzan series.
Tarzan at the Earth's Core was the first grown-up book I read and prompted me to read more adventures by Edgar RIce Burroughs and other authors. I'm a slow reader and I have a lot of stuff in my queue, so I expect to spend five or six years getting through through Tarzan.

I just finished the Tarzan books again during the weeks around New Years. I loved these as a 12-16 year old so it’s been a minute. Good books, easy reads and it confirmed why I thought they were so much fun back when I was finding SciFi and Fantasy.

I asked ChatGPT to write a fictional synopsis for a gangster novel called “The Efficiency Expert” and this is what it wrote: In the gritty underworld of organized crime, “The Efficiency Expert” follows the enigmatic protagonist, Alex Donovan, an audacious strategist with a penchant for order in chaos. When a power vacuum threatens to plunge the city into chaos, Donovan emerges from the shadows to impose ruthless efficiency on rival gangs. As alliances shift and betrayals loom, Donovan’s calculated moves draw him deeper into a world of danger. Amidst the pulsating rhythm of the criminal underworld, he navigates treacherous waters, where loyalty is a rare currency, and survival demands a mastery of both cunning and violence. “The Efficiency Expert” is a gripping tale of crime, power, and the relentless pursuit of control in a world where chaos is the only constant.

Years ago, I read "Jungle Tales of Tarzan", and found the stories of his youth quite interesting. It was the first Tarzan book I ever read.
A friend I spoke to said he found Burroughs "too macho." I beg to differ, for I think Burroughs was a product of his times, to be fair to him. 🤓📚

Lost worlds of dinosaurs, jungle adventures, other worlds.. ok, ok, I need more pulp adventure in my life. When I crawl back from the multiverse and the various eternal champions I'll see what I can do to balance the scales, shuffle some in between the second Dragonlance trilogy, the Best of CL Moore, and the Henry Kuttner omnibus I've got lined up.

The efficiency expert is a cool story, just a young man trying to make a living in 1920's Chicago. I am sure ERB put something of himself in the main character, a criminal and lady with a heart of gold.
Would've made a cool movie in the silent era.

You know that you amuse me to no end. Can I ask a question? "Marcia" is often pronounced like "Marsha", but do you know that this character's name is pronounced "Mar-See-ah"? I never heard it that way and frankly, I like it better. ( Maybe like "They Call the Wind Mar-I-ah" , instead of pronouncing it "Mar-EE-ah", as generally pronounced...then we have those who say "Maw-RE-ah".OK, I will stop now.)

The first one I ever read was Master Mind of Mars. It's fine to have it as the starting plce but it's probably better to start at the beginning of a series, which in this case would be A Princess of Mars. However, and it's only my opinion, a good place to start is At the Earth's Core, the first in the Pellucidar series. I am sure that others have their own recommendtions for a starting place but I think this is a good one.

Good afternoon Sir Michael, good afternoon Roger, good afternoon Mr Clock
We will dispense with the timepiece jokes, this is a serious Subject. ERB wouldn't approve of clock puns I'm sure.
At any rate I love J Allen St John's Illustrations for ERB, They are just brilliant, Boris, Neal . Frank and Bruce all do great work as well. But ERB put the juice in them all>

When you do your deep-dive into ERB's Tarzan series, you may want to cover/review Philip Jose Farmer's book 'TARZAN ALIVE!' for his interesting take on the interrelationships of a plethora of popular fiction heroes, including Tarzan, of course. My gut tells me you already know about the book, but in case you don't I thought I'd mention it. PJF was a rather clever author, as well as enthusiast for other popular fiction stories. It's interesting to compare AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS with PJF's novel THE OTHER LOG OF PHILEAS FOGG, for example.
