Maajid Nawaz schools caller who denies the existence of Chinese internment camps

- Maajid Nawaz clashed with a Chinese caller who disputed the UN reports that suggest up to 1 million people are being held in internment camps in Xinjiang.
The caller, originally from China, had heard comments about internment camps in Xinjiang.
Maajid Nawaz quoted the number that 1 million people had been held in those camps.
The caller, Chen, wanted to dispute this.
He said: "Where did you get the number from? That hasn't been officially recognised."
The number is based on information from the United Nations human rights panel who said that it had received many credible reports that 1 million ethnic Uyghurs in China have been held in "re-education camps".
The caller proceeded to deny this.
He said: "I'm arguing that there's no solid proof. There's no solid proof whatsoever of the so called human camps.
"Yeah, the only proof they get is some very vague satellite images which could literally be anything.

I have lived in China for about 4 years, i have personally spoken to Uighurs in other parts of China who have convinced me this is happening and who currently still have family members in these camps. Majid was not convincing, the evidence is huge from leaked internal party documents to diplomatic cables, testimony under oath and thousands of recorded experience, text messages sent by the authorities to family members, video footage of these camps, even inside these camps.
He does not have to be convinsing, the amount of 3rd party evidence is overwhelming
it's so tragic to hear about it and "do they have a choice..." oh excellent question thanks for asking it Mr. Nawaz! We need more courageous, honest and responsible journalism like yours.
The caller makes it sound like these places are simply places of continuous professional development. The kind of place doctors, lawyers and accountants attend in the West throughout their careers.
I think you have the wrong educational level of those receiving help.

I've been to this camp and I must say, it is very nice. Train ride there and the showers are a bit cramped yes, but the swimming pool is lovely.

This reminds me of a comedy routine by Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks confronting a ex-SS officer (who owned a coffee plantation in Columbia) who was denying - 'I mean, what's the big fuss - you, you send people to camp? We sent a few people to camp...mostly in the summer..."
I'd reckon that the best place to be is probably the re-education camps to avoid the coronavirus in the rest of the country. Imagine the rest of the country running towards the camp voluntarily asking for admission to this "education" center.
culturally many chinese see the state as being like a member of an extended family, so they are more conditioned to take it extremely personally if 'outsiders' criticise their government. that would be my best guess as to why the caller has taken this position.

Here in Canada, it is no secret that each time a Chinese issue occurs, the People's Republic orders Chinese immigrants and international students to turn out in its support. Many, of course, do so because they have relatives in China -- blackmail.
