Granted, even with all this the graphics aren't AMAZING, but it's completely fine. I wish Jagex would add a modern graphics slider of their own but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. There was a guy making an insane client called "OS Remastered" but I think Jagex might've shut it down, you should look it up, it looked pretty amazing.
The only thing I wish was in old school runescape was summoning and dungeneering, to me thats the old school experience I was used to and it was after dungeneering until the big update that shifted a lot of the game after that where I stopped playing. Osrs is amazing and I’m so happy to be able to play it, but with the ability to add things to the game, just dungeneering and summoning would do so much more for the game. Oh and can pet drops be put lower a tiny bit for the sake of sanity 😊
Kinda completely misleading because although removing wildy pvp and free trade, and adding EOC pissed a lot of people off.... most of that was resolved years ago. People hate RS3 because it is monetized at every single gametick and progression means nothing because it's all buyable.
A player named "SoWrecked" created a petition in 2012 that got over 100 thousand votes to bring back old school RuneScape, Jagex saw this and made a poll on their website - if the poll got x-amount of votes they would bring x amount of features to the game. That's how old school RuneScape came to be.
I can't even describe how excited I was when I heard they were bringing osrs back. me and all my freinds who played back in 2004 started playing again, and it was so awesome to experience a brand new economy. pking so many gmauls early on when they were super expensive was so insane. they literally brought back the best version of the game. I fear they may make the same mistake again though cus were seeing so many new weapons added and now people can stack 150+ damage
I agree on the excitement of the game coming back. Same thing, me and the old game buddies still kept in touch and started our accounts together. The tough pill to swallow was having to start fresh. But still, day one felt like day one of a deadman tourney lol
It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. It's either add new content and deal with power creep, or let the game lose interest over time and die because nothing new is coming out.
More context: They had to remove PVP and Free Trade because credit card processing companies were threatening to block them, because bots would use stolen credit cards to buy Runescape membership, to then grind and sell the gold for real money
The trade limit was to prevent your inventory/bank from being drained in the event of a hack, thats why they also added bank pins. I stopped playing for a few years came back and couldnt remember my bank pin.. I do miss pvp wilderness, and pvp worlds.
“Here lies sonlaxx. He had a max cape on osrs and managed to pay the bills, too. Niceeeee. RIP” Gonna need a graveyard somewhere in the world reserved for scapers, fr
Nostalgia can only carry an old game so far. Look at how dead Classic WoW is now for a great example of that. OSRS genuinely just has a good gameplay loop and has a lot of fun content that is constantly being added. All that to say that the game has evolved past nostalgia at this point.
@@therebelofchaos1674wrong. Nostalgia is the reason which people return to the Game. All arguments are justifying an addiction ( not as Bad as a drug). It wasn’t exactly like that lol. They weren’t trying to kill the game, it was in its peak. They had to make the choices they made to make sure it was still relevant and up to date, as well as secure from bots, scammers, and RWT’s. This video is extremely misleading. They did not intend to kill the game.
Thanks Dr. Crane, but they tried to make it relevant and up to date by imposing misguided leadership decisions on the game and its community. What made the game popular was its uniqueness and the way the EOC was implemented (E.g. how no one really knew about the change until it was already final) was proof enough that the people in position of power responsible for handling the special magic (pun intended) they had, and guiding it and fostering it into the future did so in one of the worst ways possible... From a community member's perspective, this negligence is no different than trying to kill the game purposefully.
how is it extremely misleading its just a fun little video its not supposed to be the oxford dictionary standard of knowledge its just a fun little short
I still remember back in the 2000s when i was in Middle school this game was EVERYTHING, also the WoW hype was starting. Its crazy that almost 20 years later its still got a community
I played back in 2021 or 2022, now I lack time for it, but I really gotta thank the friends I made in the cult of Zamorak, they gave me money, some resources, tips, help here and there… eventually when I had full Zamorak set - the trimmed one - one dude gave me a lot of money (not absurd amounts like game breaker but still a whole lot) a somewhat better set and a free monthly subscription, enough to buy two more months, some more tips and resources to keep grinding to eventually buy my own not spending a dime for it. Man, that was absolute fun, I miss those grinding days… hopefully I’ll come back one day, guess that oldschool RuneScape is like Skyrim, you don’t quit, you take long breaks between playthroughs.
You explain stuff a bit out of context. First, Jagex reinstated trading and pvp after a player vote. But it's important to know that the game was already dying because of the insane amount of bots. Jagex felt they had no choice but to remove elements of the game that the bots relied on. They "didn't try to kill the game". They tried to improve things by making changes. Ilbiet, they were bad changes for the player base. In fairness to Jagex, they made changes that no other company has ever done before, they couldn't have known the effects of such changes until after implementing them. The combat update was the true killer, but you are so wrong about "no one asking for a new combat system. They were competing with WOW at the time, and a significant portion of players did in fact discuss in RS forums, and requested combat changes. It was polled countless times.
They never should have limited trade and literally everyonenhated eoc even before it came out, not saying jagex is evil but they sure made some very very very stupid ass desitions

Found this game on the website mini clip for old flash games back in 2004. I was such a young kid that I didn’t even log into on the Jagex website for at least a few months when a friend was baffled that I was playing it on another website. I had a f2p account where I just did all the quests and leveled all the combat skills while flipping items behind the Varrock bank. I played f2p until around when Construction and Hunting were released. I had a membership until Summoning came out and when it did, I immediately stopped playing because the combat and aesthetic just felt weird.
I agree with you. But the real reason EOC happened is because Jagex felt the games PVM was very limited by the combat that RuneScape had. By making the combat more in-line with other MMO's (not exactly though) and reworking the required levels for gear and then opening up the options of 120 skills they are able to really expand on PVM.
Runescape used to be special, a game based on ticks (action per 1 tick is 0,6 seconds) The players who perfect their technique around manipulating game ticks will always be more skilled than anyone spamming skills like WOW, Rift etc.
@@XWeedhunterX You do realize the tick system is still in Runescape 3 and its still VERY relevant right? Look up 4 ticking. And you're delusional if you think OSRS PVM is harder than RS3
Old School RuneScape is the best MMO in the world in my opinion. Every new armor set is more of a lateral upgrade than a vertical one.. PVP is well balanced without hurting PVE and the quest are amazing. The reward structure is more content. You just can’t beat it and the combat is simplistic but also complex. Also no micro transactions outside of bonds.
While I don’t completely disagree I think it should be noted they did everything in their power to make sure osrs worked, how the community wanted it to work.
I don't play anymore, but this game has a sweet spot in my heart. I was excited to transfer my character to RS2’s launch. I gave it a shot when HCIM came out. I started collecting seaweed and burned myself out.
I think the reason they did all the terrible updates was in effort to try to stop all the bots. I know that was a big reason behind the trade limit Not saying they did a good job of that but i think that was the goal
Even despite the huge community for runescape, OSRS is actually a really great cautionary tale of how a few god-awful developers can ruin a good original. Literally they had to implement the polling system which explicitly acknowledges that they cannot be trusted to make changes in their own game they manage. And it was very effective in blocking PVP from getting any positive updates for years.
As someone who played since 2006, and took a break from 2012 until February of this year, and as someone who played osrs for a couple years RS3 is in a pretty good spot atm. EOC has been massively improved, there's a legacy mode, and my og account with all the stats and gear and progress is so sweet. I never really connected with osrs, I hated doing things over I had already earned.
@@One_Zhadosian I can understand that, back in the day I was all about the grind but now as an adult I just don't have the time anymore to play 8-12 hours a day, I'm lucky to get 8 hours a week. So the easyscape shit has done a decent job at helping to catch up.
@@RandallClark good for you then. I play osrs on my original acc, and though don't have the time or effort that yters have to do everything at maximum efficiency; I still gradually make progress in it. I started fresh in the game I love because rs3 fundamentally isn't the runescape I enjoy. I'm not nearly the top player, but I'm further on than my osrs account at this point. Original rs isn't a side option for me, and I'm so glad they've expanded it from it's roots.
I'm sad that you can't trade or pvp but at least the new RuneScape is not as grindy as osrs because I got a job and chores and life stuff to do. I grinded wood cutting and fire making from lvl 30 to 40 in 3 hours while doing spreadsheets for work since their system is more automated and faster. I won't forget we the endless hours of grinding for little reward after school 18 years ago.
This vid paints RS3 in a very unfavourable light when actually there are many redeeming factors about the game. It’s not the same game many of us played when we were kids and it may not have as big a player base (hard to accurately compare due to bots) BUT it definitely has a very loyal fan base. It’s no accident that many OSRS updates are tweaked rehashes of previous RS3 ones
Forget more popular than rs3, It's one of the most played and popular mmorpgs period. It gets millions of users logging in every month and over 2 million daily players.
Literally every game would be the funnest thing ever if they copied osrs. Imagine a halo mmorpg split up between humans and the covenant. You start off as a marine or a grunt and end game is master chief or the arbiter. You could progress with jackals, brutes, ODST characters etc. the osrs formula works for anything!
The much higher level of popularity surely has had nothing to do with the weaker protection against macros and bots resulting in a higher population of non-players. Not to say that RS3 hasn't made bad decisions, it's made... quite a few, but RuneScape has always had an issue with change being received poorly. Always. People would have rather lived in a bot-infested wasteland of RWT-ers than accept any kind of limitations to ensure fairness at all. Note that the restrictions on trade and PvP became relaxed or even entirely undone once RS3 had stronger and smarter enforcement of the issues that inspired those restrictions in the first place. Personally, I'm going to be quite honest, I've always found combat to be the weakest part of the old versions of RuneScape, to the point that prayer flashing was about the most exciting development before the Evolution of Combat became a thing.
OSRS has like 2-3x the player count of RS3, do you genuinely think that 50-66% of the OSRS player base are bots??? Don't get me wrong, bots are a huge problem, but the percentage is probably nowhere near that. In my estimate it's probably somewhere around 15-20%. Yes, RS3 does have better bot protection, but there's also less incentive for botters to bot on RS3 *because* it has a smaller player base, the gold sellers are going to where the people are and the people are on OSRS. I don't hate RS3 and I think it actually does some things better, but I definitely enjoy OSRS more.
Jagex initially made eoc because they couldn’t see a way to continue to create new and exciting updates for combat with the old system Now in OSRS all the new combat updates are balanced around polarizing mechanics like prayer flicking with a high barrier of entry and it can just feel tedious. Eoc could have been implemented much better at first that’s for sure. But I feel like it was the right decision in the long run.
@@Nick-ij5nt yeah i dont really get where rs3 players get the idea that a majority of osrs players are bots. like yes there is botting and its really obvious when you see it, but the percentage of online players who do it is likely much closer to 5% than the exaggerated numbers rs3 players drop on videos like this. if you want to see a good representation of the difference in player count and interest in the game, look at twitch categories. there are 20x more ppl watching osrs than rs3 right now, and that number never flips.

I like to chill in OSRS when i get back home from work, at least 1-2 hours a night is alright with me. Even with my fulfilled adult life where i go to work, go to gym 3x a week, and having a girlfriend, i still find enjoyment in OSRS, even if it's not 8 hours a day.
Simple answer, because this version of the game IS runescape. Whenever you reminisce about playing runescape as a kid, this is the version of the game you remember. Runescape 3 didn't turn the game into a better runescape, it made it into a worst version of WoW. Games should never forget their identity. Imagine if they changed csgo to be more like cod. That would be a disaster. Valorant is a great example of updating a game but respecting where its identity came from.
Why are brainlets always saying they tried to turn it into WoW? Is WoW the only game in the world that has abilities? Plus WoW is garbage compared to Dragon Nest
@@unrealmagic6519 The reason they exist is because a lot of them copied wow in some way and they continue to do so. Because wow grew as big as it did it has been seen as the baseline for many games like it that came after. That being said, you can see where people drew the parallels with runescape after it too tried to become more "modern". Pretty much the only reason rs3 went down the road that it did was because jagex thought they would get left behind if they didn't follow the trend. Jagex didn't try to improve their game by staying true to it, instead they tried to copy what everyone else was doing.
@@lespectator4962 well the game is better now in my opinion and ive been playing since classic. There's only so much you can do with osrs combat. RS3 PvM is much harder and more rewarding. I wonder who WoW copied from since WoW isn't the first mmo not even close.

PvP is still there, you can trade freely, and you have the option to switch to the older style combat, or set up auto attacks to make combat still easy.
Same thing that happened with Star Wars Battlefront. They tried to remake it, and it came out worse. People remember the old one far more fondly than the new one
I think one of the only reasons people play RS3 anymore is to make money for bonds, because it's maybe 1/10th the amount of time required to earn a bond in RS3 than OSRS due to the insane price of a bond now and since they just upped the cost of one by a dollar the GP price will just keep increasing
TBF free trade and wilderness issue was to stop gold sellers because they were stealing credit card numbers off kids buying gold, setting up a bunch of accounts to farm gold. Then when the parents noticed and charged back the illicit charges, the CC companies almost banned Jagex from taking credit card payments, which would have killed the game.
I’m always amazed at some players commitment to a game. WoW underwent serious changes similar to rs eoc yet players still play it 10 years later and enjoy it just the same.
EOC was an issue, but people would have adapted eventually. But the real nail in the coffin was the added mtx, which justified players' belief that the game was going downhill and ensured most of them wouldn't bother with rs3.
It’s very generous of you to omit the fact that RS3 is now practically a mobile gacha game where not only is it p2w, you’re also constantly bombarded with ads to spend money as you play.
Honestly they have done the best thing! OSRS and rs3 same as wow and wow vanilla. Only thing I wish they did was allow you to take your old account back to OSRS. have a 15+ year old acc but stuck on rs3 :( and that reason I will continue on rs3 is to max my first account 😂
You just make an entirely separate account for osrs so you can play rs3 and osrs at the same time, afk on both. Max rs3 account and build up the osrs account at the same time
Runescape was so different from other mmos and other games that it was so fun, when they started changing it to make it more like other mmos is when it really burned down

This should serve as a blueprint for other developers. If Call of Duty brought back Verdansk for Warzone, it would blow up. They just refuse to listen to the community.

The only thing I wish was in old school runescape was summoning and dungeneering, to me thats the old school experience I was used to and it was after dungeneering until the big update that shifted a lot of the game after that where I stopped playing. Osrs is amazing and I’m so happy to be able to play it, but with the ability to add things to the game, just dungeneering and summoning would do so much more for the game.

absolutely loved playing osrs back in 07 before eoc, it was the legit end of it all, so happy that i came back and still enjoy it!
Kinda completely misleading because although removing wildy pvp and free trade, and adding EOC pissed a lot of people off.... most of that was resolved years ago. People hate RS3 because it is monetized at every single gametick and progression means nothing because it's all buyable.
Most skills are buyable in osrs.
A player named "SoWrecked" created a petition in 2012 that got over 100 thousand votes to bring back old school RuneScape, Jagex saw this and made a poll on their website - if the poll got x-amount of votes they would bring x amount of features to the game.
That's how old school RuneScape came to be.
I remember that petition by Jagex.
But still, day one felt like day one of a deadman tourney lol
it's impossible to pk good players without stacking them out.
It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. It's either add new content and deal with power creep, or let the game lose interest over time and die because nothing new is coming out.
@alexdelhoyo9179 what does that even mean xd

Nostalgia can only carry an old game so far. Look at how dead Classic WoW is now for a great example of that. OSRS genuinely just has a good gameplay loop and has a lot of fun content that is constantly being added. All that to say that the game has evolved past nostalgia at this point.

Also no micro transactions outside of bonds.

Jagex initially made eoc because they couldn’t see a way to continue to create new and exciting updates for combat with the old system
Now in OSRS all the new combat updates are balanced around polarizing mechanics like prayer flicking with a high barrier of entry and it can just feel tedious.

@@unrealmagic6519 If you weren't such a brainlet yourself would know why it's compared to WoW.
@@lespectator4962 no I don't because there are hundreds of MMOs like WoW

Because wow grew as big as it did it has been seen as the baseline for many games like it that came after. Pretty much the only reason rs3 went down the road that it did was because jagex thought they would get left behind if they didn't follow the trend.

PvP is still there, you can trade freely, and you have the option to switch to the older style combat, or set up auto attacks to make combat still easy.
Same thing that happened with Star Wars Battlefront. They tried to remake it, and it came out worse. People remember the old one far more fondly than the new one
and now they cry because they dont get updates, like wtf
Credit card scammers was the big reason why they took out pvp and made trade limits. Jagex got in a really crappy pickle back in the day
I think one of the only reasons people play RS3 anymore is to make money for bonds, because it's maybe 1/10th the amount of time required to earn a bond in RS3 than OSRS due to the insane price of a bond now and since they just upped the cost of one by a dollar the GP price will just keep increasing
Actually the number 1 thing that killed Runescape was probably the microtransactions
I'm still playing RS3 because my bucket list is massive. Running around with a 15 year cape doing quests I should have done 15 years ago
