Terrible editing, atrocious camera work , woeful lighting and the best series of videos I've seen on UA-cam by a country mile. I watched them all, back to back last night while my wife slept next to me in bed. Many youtubers concentrate on production and presentation and forget what's real. I only had the follow-up video left for this morning. I've wanted to own a series 2 since I was a lad. I'd love to restore one, but while I have the money for the vehicle, I live in London where the cost of renting a garage is ridiculous. Maybe I'll buy your one when you get the series 3 up and running. Please. !

Brilliant opening line - might ask to use that as a quote on the DVD/Blueray boxset! Thank you and yes I'd recommend a Series 2, you're welcome to mine, but it may be a while as I now have the ZIL to sort out too!

I can't see any problem with the editing at all... an' there's nothing much wrong with the camerawork either (you should see some of those videos when some bloke's go a go-pro strapped to his head.)

I’ve just ended my day with a full and comprehensive binge of your Landy series, your honesty, true determination and sheer guts to take on a project with virtually no help is astounding, I love your style, I love your effort and your self drive(through your trials and tribulations), I can only wish to have such a set up, and a free reign of what you do and when you do it(at your pace). Thanks very much, it’s been like therapy for me. Good man, take care, good luck.

Another series 2 man. I owned a 109 2a petrol (1962ish as build date) and my 109 2a diesel (1965) I kept. When my dad lost his car I gave him the 109 petrol as a birthday gift. We should get a group of us doing all kinds of videos, I will subscribe.

I know this is a year out of date but I've just found these videos, which have been great. The problem you have with your brakes is that the back plates are fitted on the wrong sides. The adjuster snails and springs should be on the front, leading shoe. With the front shoe not pulled back by the spring, the rotation of the drum pulls it in dragging the brakes on. Just swap the back plates round and all will be well

I’m a bit late to the party too, but I was going to say exactly the same thing.
Alternatively, you can fit the larger 11” brakes from a LWB. The ones off the rear of a LWB would take the existing wheel cylinders and, although still single-leading-shoe, have springs and adjusters on both shoes so they aren’t reliant on the rotation of the hub to knock them off. Either that or fit LWB fronts that have twin leading shoes.

I am trying to get a 1980 series 3 109 going again and needed some encouragement, watched most of your restoration videos and have regained some euthasium again. Liked your attitude as some restorations are almost museum quality show pieces that are too costly and time consuming for us mere working folk. Yours may not look the prettiest but you have got a working vehicle again that with a bit of luck you could get a another good 10-20 years out of.

Great to see a 2 1/4 working for it's living. I gave up with the tin can reservoir and went down the route of fitting a pair or Series 3 type single circuit master cylinders one for the brake and one for the clutch which have the plastic reservoir built in and only cost £20 each.

Excellent. Fascinating, isn't it, how the old beasts just keep going but the modern new 'sophisticated' machines wear out and aren't worth repairing. I recall working on my mother's old Datsun 1200 station wagon ... there was so much room in the engine bay I could get into it crank down the head.

So you've gone back to the 2.25 Diesel engine have you? Can't be many who've taken a tdi out and replaced it with the old 2.25!
I bought a old landy which was sat in a hedge for a few years, I couldn't stop it from smoking also but after a good long run it was loads better!
I did my apprenticeship in a old Land Rover garage and the owner new theses engines like the back of his hand, he always said give it a good service and a good blast and go from there!
As you say the timing chain can stretched but another one is the the skew gear under the pump! Usually get puffs of smoke on idle and makes your cloths stink of unburnt diesel!
Had one once where somebody had taken the CAV pump of and elongated the holes to adjust the pump around more, obviously there was some serious wear!
Anyway great channel and glad you've stuck with a Land Rover engine!

Have your ever considered running on Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO)? I had a VW 1.7 SDI, running a Bosch fuel pump and ran that on WVO, worked a treat and cost about £3 (plus the man hours to filter and collect the oil) per tank. Collected the oil from fast food outlets for free. Super cheap!

The brakes on these old landys are forever needing adjusting especially if you go from the field to the road, that can be dangerous as you don't know what direction it will swerve of to.if you have a 200 tdi engine fitted it is worth considering fitting disc brakes all round defender or dico axles, change master cylinder servo not as bad a job as it sounds Thanks for all the great videos

Hey Max, years ago when I was still driving my '67 Spitfire I had endless brake and clutch master issues which could in most cases be resolved by cleaning or replacing the small slotted/castellated bit on the end of the piston. It turns out that that part allows the hydraulic fluid to be drawn and returned to the reservoir thus relieving the pressure when you take your foot off the pedal.

I remember driving from Essex to Norfolk on one of those in the midst of winter many years ago. I still have nightmares about it. Cushion free bench seats so you could feel every bump & pepple in graphic pain, no heating and lots of places for cold air to get in. They do have a certain charm about them and something you can hand down to your descendents and likely they to theirs.

I was lucky to get a bean can brake res for under£30 on eBay. Similar ones are out there for Austin healeys. New at 44 quid. May have to make up two link pipes though. Not exactly correct but it's under the bonnet!! Nice rover

A bit late I suppose, but your back plate is on the wrong side! the adjuster should be at the front. The spring pulls the leading shoe(front) off the drum when you release the brake, with it your way round the shoe will be pulled on all the time as the wheel goes round.

This sounds like what I had with wrong match of master and slave cylinders when my S1 was a Long Wheelbase and the system would pressurise itself making the brakes bind. Agree with another post that backing plates may be reversed - a NZ axle rebuild shows the snails at the front. Presumably the proper LR manual would show the correct detail if there is pdf out there. I had a reprint from Craddocks at one time.

One on the brake shoes just from my experience, don’t buy allmakes4x4, they are like iron the friction material, have a real “ting” sound when knocked together, had to fit mine to the drums, could fry an egg on the drums after a couple mile, excellent videos by the way
