I made a rookie mistake years ago installing a microwave. Plug it in to make sure it works PRIOR to installing. I installed it and then found out it was faulty out the box.
Thanks for the refresher. I've done this once before 10 years ago but some of your tips for making it even easier were great. Awesome idea to cut around the bottom of the box, use the styrofoam to protect stove and put template on cardboard. Much better than video that popped up after this on same subject.
Cutting around the box is risky. Followed GEs steps to the letter and they just do happen to have the power cord tucked in between the foam and the cardboard. Ended up slicing the cord :(
Great video. Putting the packing Styrofoam on the stovetop was pure genius. One snag I ran into was that I was replacing a 5-year-old GE model with the same model number, same size, same look, same top venting. So no new mounting plate or screw holes, right? Wrong! Problem is, the mounting configuration changed, so I had to do all that stuff and the holes were VERY close to the original holes, making things a little sloppy. Worked out fine in the end, but what I had allotted 45 minutes for because I assumed it was an apples-to-apples replacement, took about 2 hours. Thanks, GE.... If not for this video, I'm sure I'd have done a crappier job and it would have taken an hour longer.
got my new GE microwave home. left the box at the store to fit into our car, and i guess i left the directions too. never fear youtube and the fix it channel are here!!

Thank you! I am about to put my new microwave up myself. Unfortunately it was an out of box and does not have a template. Have to make one myself. Also, there is no venting out the top or back of the wall.
Thank you. Extremely helpful. I even used your idea of placing the top template on cardboard to hold it in place. Appreciate you taking the time to put the video together. Also, you did the installation solo, which is how I had to do mine.
Does the outlet have to be flush against the wall above the microwave? My guy disconnected the fan from old stove and drilled a hole and ran the electrical wires to the cabinet (black, white and ground wire).
That's how I want it to happen. The microwave lifts itself onto the bracket as if by magic. I watched another video where the guy lifts it by himself with one hand. I mean it's not like they weigh 60lbs or anything and you could have an expensive accident if you had a problem? What could go wrong????
Excellent video! GE microwave top screw hole locations are too far from the center of the microwave itself. Specially one of them. double check how wide is your countertop horizontal member to drill the holes.
Great, and easy to follow video! Thanx for showing all of the template use, and how to change around for the different venting options. This will help me greatly!
Have you run into screws that only go into the hole about a turn ? Happened to be today on a GE I thought the nuts were faulty. Went to the store and they are all like that. Any advice?

Hi! Approximately how far from the gas range was this microwave? We have a gas range and are doing Café appliances. GE recommends 30” for over the range microwaves above gas ranges. Can we get away with a shorter clearance?? My wife is only 5’3”😅
Hi, the common recommendation for many ranges is 30 inches of space between the top of the cooktop and the bottom of an upper cabinet. The wording with many over the range microwaves is 30 inches from the top of the microwave to the cooktop. I've seen 13 inches to 18 inches of space between the bottom of the microwave to the stovetop recommended. I would review the installation recommendations to find one that will work for you. If you have a high BTU gas range, you need more distance. We have more home improvement tips on our weekly podcast itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/fix-it-home-improvement/id880903087?mt=2

Microwave also has a opening at a top of a microwave door in case if it's not vented outside.. do not know what to do to stop greasy cabinet on a top.. any suggestions? Thanks and appreciate

Good job with the video. My question is about the charcoal filter. Do you have an idea how to put the charcoal filter in. I am having issues putting them in. Thanks
Hi, open the door and remove the two screws on the cover on the top of the opening. Once you remove the cover you can lift up and pull our the filter. Let me know if that helps.
Thanks, excellent video. One thought/question: Could you use foam weather stripping around the vent hole to mitigate any exhaust leakage? My concern is the heat of exhaust gasses.?
Great video! One question- Do you need to seal the vent or provide a rubber boot to prevent smoke/odors from leaking around where the back of microwave fits into the back wall ducting?
Hi, in many applications you can't get to the duct to seal it completely. If you can, use some duct tape. We have more tips in our home improvement book amzn.com/B01MRGO8C5.
