Just wow, what an impressive woman. Almost shamefully tragic the way she has been regarded by others who share the same faith and supposed religious moral code. I am truly in awe of this exceptional being.
Who ever belief this, thats mean u havent study enough. This is very contradict with Islam. No such thing those thing. Pls dont run from the real teaching and conduct of Islam
The only reason women can't be an Imam is that they have period so they can't perform Salah every day. It's not forbidden for any reason that a woman leads a prayer. It's disgusting to see many brothers rise against her and tolerate many traditions that are actually against Islam. She's right about the difference between immigrants and people who converted in a non Islamic country, it's refreshing to see people who have converted purely through the Quran and don't have cultural bias.
She can rest during her period if she wants, what does that have to do with being Iman for the rest of the month? Male Imams take rest and fall ill and go to vacation.
Please hold on to the Qur'an and the sunnah (ways of the Prophet pbuh). Never once Prophet pbuh allowed women to lead prayers when there is a man amongst the makmum. Prophet pbuh also taught us to eat with our right hands.. She took medicine with her left hand and drink with her right hand. Satan eat with their left hand. I pray to Allah swt to guide all of us. Amin.
This is not what we believe in this while . In Islam, women cant be men in any way and vice versa. May Allah show all of us the right path. Aaamin ya rabbal'alamin
Is it possible that she sees Islam through the prism of Christian concepts, I know she is a professor, has a phd and even spent time at Al-Azhar, but she was raised by a Christian pastor. I respect Muslim Modernism and the reformation she is contributing too, but is the way she sees Allah common to Muslims of the conservative fiqhs around the world or is it alien to their concepts of merciful, beneficent and compassionate - Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim ?
the very notion of mercy implies that one is in a subordinate position, that one is contingent upon something being granted to them, a sort of master-servant position, Islam seems ready to view the world as one of concentric circles of slavery almost
She received her M.A. in Near Eastern Studies and her Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan in 1988. During graduate school, she studied in Egypt, including advanced Arabic at the American University in Cairo, Qur'anic studies and tafsir (exegesis or religious interpretation) at Cairo University, and philosophy at Al-Azhar University.
It's pretty disturbing that you think something like peace, equality, justice, compassion, mercy, etc. (which are the essence of her teachings) are SO foreign to Islam that they must be from another religion, a religion she chose to leave in favor of Islam!
No, it is probably remains of Sufi Muslim groups more present in African Islam originally. Many Africans in slavery were also Muslims. It is deeper than that, the official Islam is ruled by Iranians and Arabs and Egypt. Peripheral Islam in Africa like mali, Somalia, tchad … etc. was more spiritual and Sufi.

A Recent Conversation Between Two MSA Board Members Person A: For Friday prayers, the idea of women praying behind men is offensive. It’s a grave injustice that needs to be rectified. Person B: So what do you propose? A: The men’s area side by side with the women’s area. B: But then, we know that the right (al-yamin) is favored. So that means whichever gender is on the right side has the advantage. That’s not fair either. A: So then maybe we should do boy-girl order or create a free for all where people can pray wherever they want regardless of gender. Wouldn’t that be the most egalitarian? B: Well, no, because the imam is still a man. A: So we’ll be sure to have female imams. B: But then what about the transgendered or even the non-gendered? Where is their representation? A: Well, we can have a rotating schedule of imams across all genders. B: Sounds good. But we are still facing Mecca. Doesn’t that privilege Saudi Arabia over all other countries and races? A: Good point. We should rotate the qibla every week. B. Also the prayer itself is in Arabic. Won’t that trigger or otherwise traumatize non-Arabs? A: Right again. We need to make sure the imam recites in a variety of languages. B. And sign language. A: Of course. B: All this sounds great, but at the end of the day, the Friday prayer is a Muslim practice and we are praying to Allah. Doesn’t that exclude people of other faiths? A: Wow, you are so right! We should make sure to incorporate the gods and rituals of other faiths in the prayer, just to make sure all feel equally welcome. B: Awesome! Now we can have a fully egalitarian service! I can’t wait.

And you arrogated to yourself the "we", was it cast upon you by the ummah at large, or did you obtain this authority by revelation?
