Ps2 era was the golden age of gaming. Lot of gems that were published since gaming back then was more adventurous with their projects and not obsessed with "How can we milk the playerbase with a unfinished game?"
I've seen many games where I can play as a member of the US military, be it the army, the marines, the air force, and the navy. As far as I know, this is the one and only game where you play as a coast guard member, and it's in a horror setting
You know what else was cool about this game? The sick flash website. Anyone remember when games had awesome flash websites? Killzone, res evil 4, cold fear... i miss the internet back then.
The fixed camera/over the shoulder combo is something i wish more developers would use in survival horror games. Hell Capcom should have used this idea for a resident evil game a long time ago. It's a perfect blend of classic and modern survival horror and im sure fans of both would love. I i know i do. If you're an indie dev and you plan on working on a survival horror title please consider using this idea.
The RE4 beta version did that, but I think Mikami scrapped that idea and decided to stick to over the shoulder because RE4 being so combat focused would make the camera switching between the two styles confusing, especially in big open areas like the first village fight. Sticking to a consistent style with RE4 was the right choice. However, I can see this camera combo working in more traditional survival horror games that don't focus on combat/shooting that much and are usually set in closed areas, such as the classic RE games and Silent Hill games.
Only a tiny minority wants fixed cameras and tank controls to continue to exist in RE Games, fortunately the majority of players enjoy the franchise more with over the shoulder camera view.
@@metroplex29 I mean, the most beloved game in the series (OG RE4) has tank controls, and two of the most beloved games in the series to this day (RE1 Remake and OG RE2) have both tank controls and fixed camera angles. There’s nothing wrong with tank controls and fixed camera angles, they’re just a design style. Some modern indie horror games actually use them. Personally I like both the classic and modern style of the camera and controls.
From the creators of Alone in the Dark New Nightmare! Comes a Cold Fear with a Cold Beer! I love the MGS2 UI and font. It's like The Thing the videogame, so much potential, but ultimately didn't penetrated the zeitgeist back then.
The Thing is being remastered by the team that did the System Shock Remake. (2023 game, not the remaster) They also remastered a bunch of classic games, and are working on the System Shock 2 remaster as well. And they are joined by the guy that did the incredible RE4 HD Project mod.
Now that's a blast from the past. Solid AA game, this one, from the time when big studios still made AA games. It could've been a franchise, I can totally see it. The sequel would've been so much better.
God, when you listed the releases that surrounded this game, it brought me back to a time where you'd have literal GOTY contenders dropping nonstop. What a time to be alive that was
this was originally how RE4 was going to play, if you look the early versions(like the Hookman for example), they have fixed camera for the exploration and over the shoulder for combat edit: the video literally mention this at 15:23 lol
I wish horror games in general used more interesting camera systems instead of "third person over the shoulder" all the time. Things haven't changed much since 2005.
Let's not go that far. Capcom has struck the perfect control scheme, and the first-person games only add variety to their formula. Fixed camera angles wouldn't be received well from the general audience, and for good reason. I love old RE games, too, but their gameplay is a thing of the past
Good review! I see a lot of people giving this game love recently! Loved it back in the days, very underrated game. Subbed and liked, and after subbing I also saw you have videoes on so many of my favorite games!
Excellent video as always, man. Love that you talk about these games, so they don't get forgotten. Not to dictate how you make content, but would you consider making a video on those "Unique game features you'd like to see indie devs explore" you spoke about in the video? 11:47 for reference
One of the most underappreciated survival horror games ever made by Ubisoft. I remembered playing this on the PC, and it's indeed a fun game. It'll be nice if they remaster Cold Fear.
In the spanish translation, the voice for Tom Hansen was dubbed by the same guy who voiced Sam Fisher, so you have another Splinter Cell conection right there haha
I played and finished this game 2 times (1st on PS2, then on PC) years ago, and the 3 things that really ruined my overall impression for the game was the crappy save system, which can only be used once after reaching a story checkpoint, not being able to carry healing items (3 would've been enough), and final boss fight, which required you get caught & execute a QTE trigger to actually hurt it (as shown in video). If the game had better and more standard save system, and allowed you to carry healing items, I would've more than forgiven the final boss fight itself.

I only rented Cold Fear because I was still waiting for the PS2 Resident Evil 4 port. Ended up liking it on its merits. I wish Ubisoft gave a sequel. Even though they would’ve ran the cold Fear series into the ground if it did get sequels.
I remember having the game on the original Xbox and being fascinated by its manual, particularly how the zombie designs look lifted from L4D despite being older. Ah, to be a baby again
Have you seen the trailer for .45 Parabellum Bloodhound? It looks like a developer has finally taken on the challenge of making a game that wears its Parasite Eve inspiration on its sleeve and hopefully it will be a fun take on that extremely unique blend of gameplay styles.
26:40 if I recall correctly (and it has been a long time since I checked I read up on this) that is indeed the result of the devs running out of time and having to cut out a section where you played as Ana
Cold Fear was freaking great for sure. And let's not forget that song from Manson in it as well. It's probably one of his best ever. I think I finished it right after I did with RE4.
I do remember something from these guys, almost nothing but here it goes: iirc these guys were working on some FPS survival horror game set in a citya, and they made released some demo/prototype vid of it. I remember watching that vid many times when I was younger, 'cause I played Cold Fear for the first time back when I was like 13 or so? And liking it a lot, so I was interested in whatever they were planning to do next. What I remember is that you were walking through a highway full of abandoned cars during a foggy night, making your way towards the city while fending off some dark zombie like creatures, and then you were taking a stroll through the city with some kind of special weapon designed for something... special. That's all I know. I kinda lost track of it since that was everything they ever showed and later I found out it got cancelled... And that's all I remember from this particular studio. Kinda sad, I do think Cold Fear is a very solid title and they at least deserved one more chance...

I miss the times I could go to a video game store and just stumble on a great AA game. Nowadays there is very little surprises in gaming

There's a good reason why the PS2 is "still" the best selling console. Variety.
