How about the tunnel stages in contra would they be considered isometric and how about gremlins 2 on the nes would that count as isometric or is it just top down sometimes its hard to tell the difference between top down and isometric
Now that WWF Wrestlemania Challenge got mentioned, I suddenly remembered Tecmo World Wrestling . It was (IMO) the best wrestling game on the NES and does have an isometric-ish quality to it.
Hey, John! I love these ranking videos and I have a suggestion for the next one: You should rank the Squaresoft NES games since you ranked their SNES games before.
Hi, John. Big fan of your videos here. To help clarify, isometric basically means the view is characterized by three equal axes at right angles, or in gaming, it would refer to as 3/4 view. This why the graphic is generally an elevated view rotated at 45 degrees to give the illusion of 3 dimensions. We now return the geekiness factor back to normal. 😜😁
I loved Paperboy 1&2 and playing it in the arcade with the cabinet having actual bike handle bars with a button on the grips to throw papers was godlike. I used to walk up to a local Chuckie Cheese's to play it. But ohhhh Cobra Triangle. Seriously one of my favorite games ever. The unique gameplay shifting approach, the insane bosses/track designs and the stellar soundtrack. Such a gem that I still throw into my NES a few times a year to do a "how far can I get" run. Rare had so many wild cards up their sleeves back in those days. Speaking of Rare, RC Pro AM is one that my two best friends and I will tackle trading off between stages to this day. Missiles are great but Roll Cage Special 4 Life!!
A trick in Captain Skyhawk on the fast blue and red stages is to hold down select and alternate with left and right a few times. You will do a barrel roll and either speed up or slow down the stage. Thanks for the videos! Really well done, thorough, and the critiques are fair. Keep up the great work!
So first off. Great video! I forgot about how rough Bill & Ted were. Secondly does the isometric mean that you've covered every company in NES? I really think your ranking videos by company, while subjective, have become one of the great compendiums of quick reviews for such a huge library> Thanks for all you do.
From what I understand Rare in their old days, under the name: Ultimate Play the Game, were huge innovators for Isometric games back on the ZX Spectrum. I guess they carried a log of that into their NES games.
Man NES Play Action football was one of my favorite games when i was like 10 or so. Such a fun game at the time. Wish you would’ve showed a bot more gameplay but i know you aren’t a big sports guy haha 🍻
I played Paper Boy before I learned to ride a bike and this made me think riding a bike was one of the hardest things to do in the world. Well, I learned and as an adult I still enjoy riding bikes! I have never delivered papers though, maybe that is difficult. . .
IMO, Ultima Warriors of Destiny is less isometric than Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off-Road, albeit unimpairedly less syllabically bloated as a title. Great video as always!
Captain Skyhawk: Not isometric. The gameplay is absolutely a vertical shmup, even if the enemies move are drawn in on an isometric grid. An isometric SHMUP would be more like Zaxxon Motherbase 2000. Ultima Warriors of Destiny, on the other hand, is definitely isometric in gameplay, much like most of the other Ultima games and AD&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun.
I want mango flakes! H-E-B was great when I lived in Tx. They even have some store brand chocolates (like an HEB version of Snickers for example) that were really good.
Some of those were Oblique Projection, not isometric projection. If drawing a perfect cube in isometric, each of the 3 visible sides would display the same area on the picture plane (TV screen in this case).
I think you missed 720 as well. As a young skateboarder I loved this game more than Skate or Die, which I grew to like more as I got older and understood the missions more. But yeah, 720, isometric, and I'd give it an A for isometricism, lol
I've seen videos where they used adaptors that removed the lag. Frame meister was one I believe. Another option is to look for CRT televisions on trash day. People can't sell them so they just put them out on the curb.
Pac-Mania was a weird game for me; I saw it once in an arcade, and then NEVER AGAIN for many years, leaving me to wonder if I'd imagined the whole thing. RC Pro-am is great, too, but sadly seems to be largely lost to time; back in the day EVERYONE knew about it, but you don't hear much about it anymore.
Ultima: Quest of the Avatar is still one of my favourite RPGs on the NES. So naturally I was excited when Warriors of Destiny came out...all I can say is, I am so glad I rented it instead of running out to buy! Seriously, what an embarrassing abomination. I'm kind of surprised AVGN hasn't shredded this one yet.
I was gonna say "what about Mother/Earthbound Beginnings", but I don't know if that counts as "isometric", it's style seems to be known as "oblique projection". Plus while the game was fully localized and an NES release was planned before being cancelled, it wasn't officially released outside of Japan until 2015 on the Wii U
Bill & Ted reminds me a specific issue, and that is games that were better on the gameboy then the nes. Bill & Ted was one of them, and I am not sure of any else. Could you look into that?
Never new Last Ninja 🥷 came out on the NES, I had it on my C64 and loved it I might try and get it for my NES as I have alot of nostalgia for it. Just hope if I play it, it does not ruin my childhood memories
Love the vids, but got a question. How come marble madness got a “C” on the Milton Bradley list 9 months ago, but an “S” on the isometric games list? Am I missing something?
Isometric games would probably be easier if Nintendo or third party made a controller with a D-pad rotated 45 degrees so you have a X instead of a + shape
Watch the first batch of Isometric NES games ranked ua-cam.com/video/GDKj7SKc_dY/v-deo.html
How about ranking impressive cutscenes in NES games?
How about the tunnel stages in contra would they be considered isometric and how about gremlins 2 on the nes would that count as isometric or is it just top down sometimes its hard to tell the difference between top down and isometric
Hey, thanks for covering more isometric games, especially Captain Skyhawk!
Hey John. You're missing Goal by Jaleco, one of the best soccer games for the NES.
And Goal 2
Captain Skyhawk is one of those games no one has heard of, but deserves more love. It’s simple, but very smooth and well made.
Agreed. One of the favourite NES games I had growing up.
Love “eating a beef stick isometricly”
Now that WWF Wrestlemania Challenge got mentioned, I suddenly remembered Tecmo World Wrestling . It was (IMO) the best wrestling game on the NES and does have an isometric-ish quality to it.

Gotta play the SEGA Genesis versions of Paperboy 1 & 2, they are Arcade perfect minus the handlebars
A trick in Captain Skyhawk on the fast blue and red stages is to hold down select and alternate with left and right a few times. You will do a barrel roll and either speed up or slow down the stage. Thanks for the videos! Really well done, thorough, and the critiques are fair. Keep up the great work!
The Last Ninja 🥷🏻 definitely gets an S Tier from me! Always come back to it. Even looped the Kunitoki ghost 👻 music on a cassette for Hallowe’en. 🎃
Please do a SNES isometric games ranked! Heck do an isometric game ranking for all consoles I'm obsessed with these videos!
Glad to see you doing the ranking videos again. Love them. Always look forward to new ones. Can’t wait to see you do more SNES ones.
I can't stop obsessing over the box of mango flakes in the background lol
Same. And as I type this comment I’m eating a mango gummy bear
@@Rountree1985 rock on!
I love texas!
How about a “Bad NES games that would be good on SNES” list
Oh or bad NES versions of SNES games
All in favor say "I!"
Battle Chess
Cobra triangle was awesome.
3:08
"i do read the comics on my videos"
"i do read the comments on my videos"
must've missed it in the edit ;) haha i kinda liked it left in there
Dude! Keep growing the rock hair! Your content is always fun. Thank you for posting!
Thanks Mr Riggs you tend to upload everytime i need it!
Hey thanks John for posting this video you help made my Sunday made it better!!!!!!!
For Paperboy, you don't have to hit every house...you only have to deliver to all of the current subscribers to get more.
Missed 720. Well rare used to be ultimate, they were the kings of isometric games on the spectrum.
So first off. Great video! I forgot about how rough Bill & Ted were.
Secondly does the isometric mean that you've covered every company in NES? I really think your ranking videos by company, while subjective, have become one of the great compendiums of quick reviews for such a huge library>

From what I understand Rare in their old days, under the name: Ultimate Play the Game, were huge innovators for Isometric games back on the ZX Spectrum. I guess they carried a log of that into their NES games.
After watching this, I was walking through my house at odd angles isometrically, collecting laundry, and my wife yelled at me.
Tell her she just doesn't understand, then start crying.
Man NES Play Action football was one of my favorite games when i was like 10 or so. Such a fun game at the time. Wish you would’ve showed a bot more gameplay but i know you aren’t a big sports guy haha 🍻
The Last Ninja looks like Moe and Curly from the Three Stooges playing slapstick with eachother when punching and kicking eachother. Lol.
I'm here Watching your video!!! Keeping up with watching all of your video still farts awesome!
Video's not still farts. Spelling correction wrong
Love your content man. How about anticipation, ring king, and for extra credit... Shadowrun on SNES.
That WWF one reminded me of Championship Wrestling on C64 which I used to play all the time!
EPYX Championship Wrestling? I had that on Apple II e
Sid Vicious
Can't wait to see the 3rd episode of this series 😂
Nice shirt! ThimbleCon 87 was a blast!
"Whatever you want to do with it." I'm sure no one else told you to do whatever you want with their meat stick in a UA-cam video. 😂
That reminds me... was the Genesis game Championship Pro-Am just a port of the first NES game, or a conversion of that and the sequel?
I played a ton of Cobra Triangle and Paper Boy when I was young! "Iso-Meh-Tri-City"
Big Riggs! Getting sponsors! You deserve all the sponsors, I love your show!
The Last Ninja on Nes is The Last Ninja 2 on C64 and Amiga
John your the man, love these ranking videos
I played Paper Boy before I learned to ride a bike and this made me think riding a bike was one of the hardest things to do in the world. Well, I learned and as an adult I still enjoy riding bikes! I have never delivered papers though, maybe that is difficult. . .
IMO, Ultima Warriors of Destiny is less isometric than Ivan Ironman Stewart's Super Off-Road, albeit unimpairedly less syllabically bloated as a title. Great video as always!
I don't know if you count it but I think that Deadly Towers would count as isometric. I know a lot of people hate it, I kind of enjoyed it.
Feels like you went from ranking the "isometricity" to the games in this video :)
And you still forgot Monster Truck Rally. Oh well. I feel like that game gets slept on a lot anyway.
Great video! Missed Goal! again 😅
"no game is more LJN than Bill and Ted"
Uncanny X-Men: "I'm I a joke to you?"
I have always loved paperboy !!!! It was so much fun to rent on the weekends back in the day .
I guess he got em in that other video lol
Captain Skyhawk and Cobra Triangle are two of my favorite games. Played them a ton as a kid, Skyhawk especially is waaaaay under rated!
Some of those were Oblique Projection, not isometric projection. If drawing a perfect cube in isometric, each of the 3 visible sides would display the same area on the picture plane (TV screen in this case).
I hope you remembered Wrestlemania Challenge. Was shocked it was left off lol.
Mobster Truck Rally for NES, forgot about that one. I rather enjoyed it Because it supported up to 4 players and also had a track creator.
How about Sega Genesis isometric games next? That would be fun
I... think that video would be over an hour.
Multiple parts would probably work best
Missing the Tier chart as you go through the list again?! 'smatter with you Riggs?!
*GOOD JOB BEEFSTICK McGEE*
*YA DONE COME THRU, SON*
I think you missed 720 as well. As a young skateboarder I loved this game more than Skate or Die, which I grew to like more as I got older and understood the missions more. But yeah, 720, isometric, and I'd give it an A for isometricism, lol
I’ve never gotten past the bouncing phone booth in Bill & Ted.
Without a CRT, I can't beat Cobra Triangle anymore (lag). Used to love that game. Any suggestions for an HDTV with a great game mode?
I've seen videos where they used adaptors that removed the lag. Frame meister was one I believe. Another option is to look for CRT televisions on trash day. People can't sell them so they just put them out on the curb.
Great video!! You missed a big one, though, Solstice!
see part 1
Hey John, will you be selling merchandise at the Midwest Gaming Classic? Would love to support.
John- Gremlins 2 for NES is isometric.
You missed one game. that is Godzilla for the NES, as you move around that game board in an isometric view to get to the levels.
Thumb up for HEB...
But for real, these videos are great
Pac-Mania was a weird game for me; I saw it once in an arcade, and then NEVER AGAIN for many years, leaving me to wonder if I'd imagined the whole thing. RC Pro-am is great, too, but sadly seems to be largely lost to time; back in the day EVERYONE knew about it, but you don't hear much about it anymore.
The fact that paperboys no longer existed when i was a pre-teen in the early 90s depressed me.
Ring King . Dont know if anyone mentioned that
You give Paperboy an A??! The NES version was a shadow of its arcade self.
Does Anticipation count? Or any of the baseball games?
i got a idea for a video games that were better on nes than there other versions because surprisingly a lot of nes games were multi-platform
That hat looks great bro
Imagine if that was the trick to the Ninja game. To eat a beef chew sideways and it all makes sense. Always.
Don't forget Ring King
Lol at the opener. I still love these ranking videos
Isometric beef stick eating=hilarious
Cobra Triangle was SO good 👍
Bill And Ted's Terrible Video Game Adventure
Ultima: Quest of the Avatar is still one of my favourite RPGs on the NES. So naturally I was excited when Warriors of Destiny came out...all I can say is, I am so glad I rented it instead of running out to buy! Seriously, what an embarrassing abomination. I'm kind of surprised AVGN hasn't shredded this one yet.
It's a shame because the computer versions of Ultima V were great.
Any plans for Culture Brain games for NES? Not many but a few great titles.
Old trapper is a good road snack
Bill & Ted reminds me a specific issue, and that is games that were better on the gameboy then the nes. Bill & Ted was one of them, and I am not sure of any else. Could you look into that?
thanks for listening I always enjoy when the host understands that he doesnt know everything
I loved Cobra Triangle back in the day.
So there are a few we missed!
Never new Last Ninja 🥷 came out on the NES, I had it on my C64 and loved it I might try and get it for my NES as I have alot of nostalgia for it. Just hope if I play it, it does not ruin my childhood memories
Based off Warriors of Destiny, wouldn’t Indians Jones Temple of Doom count with the weird platforms?
John! You read the comments?? Then watch out for the glitch in the Matrix!!
Love the vids, but got a question. How come marble madness got a “C” on the Milton Bradley list 9 months ago, but an “S” on the isometric games list? Am I missing something?
This is on how well the isometric is done
10:05 Ultima cannot be classified as an isometric game. Sorry everyone who thinks that.
Isometric games would probably be easier if Nintendo or third party made a controller with a D-pad rotated 45 degrees so you have a X instead of a + shape
0:50 - Incoming photoshop in 3, 2, 1 ...
John you damn stud!!!! More???
Isometric != diagonal :) (Nearly every NES game is isometric.)
That does look like a tasty beef stick.
Is galaxy 5000 or something considered an isometric game it's a pretty cool racing game in my opinion that gets no love
I... did nor know... Pac Mania was on the NES. I learn about it later on rereleases!
Last video I was like rc pro am?! Or cobra triangle?!
I love Paperboy!
I wish Pac-Mania was a licensed NES game
old trapper makes great jerky
