  • On this video we go through the re assembly of a 4L60E Transmission. I tried to make this video shorter for you so I skipped the bushing installation and installing the bolts on the valve body. But you can go to the teardown video for reference on where each bolt goes, since they're different sizes. I will make a follow up video on bushing installation.

Very good repair video. It is well paced in the way he lays out his thoughts of the task at hand and his cool laid back delivery is a plus for his video. He precisely gives information to the viewer on how he is proceeding, while explaining the cause and effect of defects that are present or a potential problem with the internal parts. It is miles ahead of most repair video, with no needless chatter and silly jokes that diminishes seriousness in a big way. He ignores the car alarms going off in the background, because we all know it is a workshop environment and that is expected. Not the usual over-explained noise of why an inconsequential vehicle alarm is sounding on a video and pretending to know more than you do. Hiram is an automotive genius! He names every parts in a knowledgeable and inspiring way to DIYers like myself, listing their function and what to look for in their wear rate, further instilling more confidence in his repair. Very good job Hiram!

A couple of tips from a 20+ year builder in Texas. Use a 350 front pump bushing, it's wider. You can also get a wider bushing for the rear sun gear. Like Hiram said about the return springs on the 3-4 clutches, reuse them or get some. They help to keep the 3-4 clutches off when doing a high speed kickdown from third to second. Always put a straight edge on the reverse input drum. If they get hot then the shell can kick the ears out and warp the drum making the band only touch at the edges. You can also add two 350 rear clutches to the low reverse to take up some slack.

Hiram, today I put the transmission I rebuild watching your videos in my truck finally, lol. All I have to say is Thank you thank you thank you, lol. The transmission shifts perfect, don't feel the 1-2 shift at all, smooth in engagement and no issues at all. This trans is much much better than my last from a so called " transmission shop" . Thank you again you saved me money, time, headaches and above all you taught me not to be afraid to work on transmissions. Your the best, thanks Hiram.

I just tore down this same transmission, and found the case tangs that hold the center support snap ring were damaged. I think the customer shifted to reverse while rolling, it's going to require a new case.

Best video I have ever seen. I wish I could get you my transmission out of my 99s10 4 wheel drive blazer to rebuild it These people here in Georgia just rip a person off. My transmission started messing up in first gear and I was told my transmission was shot and I was charged 1400 bucks and come to find out it was only a solenoid by what this young man told me that use to work there and the transmission wasn’t even my transmission. They put in a junk yard transmission and mine was supposed to have been rebuilt along with a shift kit and it was my z71 that had a towing package added to it and the transmission was beefed up for towing. It wouldn’t even hardly pull just my twenty foot trailer empty. Help. I’m disabled and on a fixed income and this guy knew that. I had to sale some things from my home to pay for a job I didn’t even get. Your a good fella. Thanks again. I wish I was well enough to do the work cause I would try to rebuild mine.

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you Hiram. I just rebuilt the 4L60E out of my 97 tahoe and it works great. I have the ATSG manual, but your video helped more than the manual did. I do want to mention my version of the stator seal resizer I made. I used a 1-1/2 schedule 40 PVC pipe coupler (The long pressure style, not the short drain type) I slit it, then used a hose clamp. It worked great.

Dude, this is the best detail video I've seen on tranny rebuild. I bought a 91 Chevy for 1300.00 has the 700R4 square pan. You'd start the truck and put in drive it'd move about 15-20ft then slip same for reverse.
I dropped the cover and replaced the transmission filter and oil and dropped .5 quart of K&W slip treatment.
Tranny now shifts from 1-2, but not into 3rd or OD. Shift between 1-2 is a bit delayed but not extreme, shifts from 1-2 at 20-30 MPH.
Thinking I'm gonna replace governor first and see if that corrects the problem.
Thanks for awesome video --2 Thumbs up.

    Thanks or your video
I have been doing transmission work for over 35 years and a few things i saw you did that i do a little differently you might want to consider and it is as follow
1- I soak the friction plates in trans oil before i get started leaving them in fluid for a few hours at least .
2- I also soak the new bands in fluid for few hours
3-I pack the Pump assy once the vines are put in place with transmission jelly . this help the pump the get quick fluid in the trans assy as soon as you crank the engine and also those little pieces will not be working dry that could get overheated before the oil gets to them.like old engine oil pumps on sixties and seventies vehicles !
4- i also hand cove the valve body gasket will trans jelly then i place them on the plate this will keep them in place also helps soak the gasket to seat better !
Any way , you are going great job helping others and wish you good luck !

Hiram...Man I want to tell you just how great your videos are! You are putting Aamco out of service! Me and my kid are rebuilding a 01 GMC Jimmy with a 4L60E (wouldn't shift past 2nd) that would have almost been impossible without your videos. Aamco quoted us $1800. I see why now because between the parts and tools it can add up. I used the opportunity to build up some tools and invested in a shop press ($120 Harbor Freight, 12-ton and works perfect). I bought a rebuild kit before starting and I've still had to order other parts (accumulator spring was broke, 3-4 clutch steels were toast, 3-4 piston seal was toast, lockdown solonoid was broke, Sun Shield was worn etc...) Since starting I have watched a lot of UA-cam videos by different authors and yours are the most reliable. I think the rebuild will end up costing us around $500 in parts and whatever I spent on tools is ok because I can use 90% on other projects. I did get the 2 spring depressers (got the table top version vs your foot operated).
We have everything broke down and cleaned, reverse drum put back together, waiting on more parts.
    Again...can't thank you enough!

Hello sir, first off I just would like to say you are absolutely an amazing mechanic when it come to a transmission. Your knowledge is light years ahead of anyone I've tried watching. But anyway I have a 2001 4.8L Silverado, I tried saving money and rebuilding my self, watching your detailed video, I failed, not cause I did it wrong or your video, I was told by global transmission on-line for the bare bone min rebuild kit will fix my problem..... Well yeah so bare no e that it didn't include the most important parts which is the new bushings(cheap to put in the kit) and o-rings.... Like all of them! They sent me like 2 out of what 30 or 40 you need.... So anyway I used most of my old ring sets and sure enough it's ruined.... Put together perfect (cause of your detailed video). So sorry for the long words, my friends friends has a low low miles transmission on a 2004 v6 though, my question....
    Will a Chevy Silverado 2004 v6 2x2 transmission fit/swap to my
Chevy Silverado2001 4.8L 2x2 just bolt on the bellhousing to mine....... PLEASE HELP I'm about to loose my business, I've been down for 3 1/2 weeks on this.... Thank you for your time kind sir and have a great day.....

THIS IS GUY AMAZING. I'm learning a lot, actually too much information for me to process in one setting. I had my TH200 4R transmission rebuild for my Grand National. It was rebuilt with performance in mind, a bunch or billet parts. It was about $3.5k. Then I learned that I could've swapped in a 4L80, built to handle much more power and torque then the built 200 4R. The 200 4R will give up in the 9's, given the weight of my car which is 3800lbs with me in it. I know people who have done the 4L80 swap for cheaper than what I paid. The only thing I would need is a stand alone transmission controller.
Anyway, I thought there was a lot to built to rebuild an engine and there is, but a lot more pieces here. Interesting stuff.

you are amazing and I love transmissions and motors and you make a good point when you say no bearing grease or you will clog filters and there is a ball and spring and valves in the stator maybe you should check that out so your transmission won't fail
