Its just amazing to me that he can just take this stuff apart and throw the pieces in a pile, and then know exactly where everything goes back. Experience is everything.
I would have been lost after the 3rd bolt......
If I took apart like that and had that pile of parts, I'd just turn the lights out and lock up the workshop and go take some nerve medicine.
You simply place the parts on the healing bench for 18 months, buy a used trans, and throw away the parts on the 2nd year of spring cleanup.
Yeah learning is very important!!
That's the years of experience that you pay for at quality shops! These guys are awesome! Just wish they were fairly close to me
9:50 - "You leave this one out, you go into forward and reverse at the same time."
*Points at a ball the size of a pea*
I rebuilt a 4L60 way back when. Yeah gotta be careful with those check balls. Esp. during assembly. But yeah they can really ruin your day. Not quite as bad as fucking something up in the rotating assembly, tho, as at least the valve body can be accessed with the trans still in place.
Insane
Yep, just like a woman.
How could you go in reverse and forward truck would be fighting itself to move in both directions
The reverse gearing and the forward gearing both engage, locking up the transmission, which then applies all the torque that the engine and torque converter can produce into attempting to spin the locked transmission. I'm no transmission expert but that sounds like a BAD day to me!
Soon as you think he's done, he takes a tiny drill and starts removing screws from screws.
underrated comment lol
Me: That piece can't possibly come apart
Richard: Breaks it down to 7 more pieces
Having worked on the non-computer controlled version of this transmission, it has a shit-ton of parts in it. I remember having to use like 20' of bench to lay all the components out for reassembly. Think it has over a 1000 individual components if my memory serves me correctly.
I assume you're probably referring to the forward sprag at 22:05? Yeah not so obvious that is an assembly that easily comes apart.
It's like a nesting doll, you think oh he's just about done....oh, nope there's 37 more parts.
I agree

The professionalism and mastery of his craft is ridiculously apparent. This is an example of a skilled trade that should pay what an attorney makes. You'd never be able to replace this man with the decades of experience and wisdom gained dealing with the hundreds of transmissions he's laid hands on. Always a treat to watch a master at his craft...I don't care what topic. 🤙👌
Only way to replace him is to get him an apprentice he likes and wait about 20 years
He likely banks more cash than the average public attorney does.
He does make what an attorney makes, and it's well deserved.
My buddy opened a transmission shop from UA-cam videos
I think it would add huge credibility if a shop can say they hold their transmissions to PT standard, just from watching their youtube videos.
Richard is the Bob Ross of transmissions. You know you’ll never be able to do what he can, but it’s comforting and enjoyable to watch.
@Darkfarfetch Probably because it's like painting a Botticelli, it's complicated and takes days to do! 🤣🤣

How the hell this ended up my "recommended" videos I will never know, but man was this great to watch. I gained a whole new level of respect for transmissions and whoever designed them, and mostly the people that work on them. 👍
Watching this is like standing next to the doctor in the middle of a heart surgery and pretending you have a remote clue of what's actually going on.
In all seriousness, I've learned alot just from the three videos I've watched. Thanks!

I bought a brand new watch on Ebay for $8. The seconds hand was painted on.
It was still correct once a minute.😉

when they throw all those parts around you know they're either super experienced or have absolutely no experience
When parts are just being senselessly chucked around I start to worry: all those super fine machined tolerances being dinged here and scratched there especially on an unforgiving metal bench. Why not just 'place' the item down in some sort of logical, tidy order? And the heavy parts being dragged around across the bench this way and that. Why bash the end of that central shaft up against the bench trough to release the inner drum when there is a soft mallet actually to hand on the bench? Does any of this mis-handling improve the transmission - would it score you extra points in a supervised technical examination?
@@barkchip1872 I get the sense that this bloke has successfully rebuilt thousands of these things. I don't think you need to be concerned.
@@barkchip1872 those parts are way harder than the bench he’s throwing them on... the bench will be the thing getting scratched and dinged
I’m officially impressed, this guy is a master technician working on transmissions, no wonder they charge an arm and a leg to repair the transmissions, but they earn every penny 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yup. I'm here thinking, "Ok, I get it. It's expensive to repair for a reason. Not so much the parts, but the experience of the guy doing the work."
I absolutely hate working on transmissions. The way you broke this one down, as fast as you did it, is amazing to me.
rhat would probably take me a couple of days what he just did in a few mins
I'd need a cart with an array of labeled bins for parts with their bolts, seals etc.
I had to do something similar when I replaced a lower intake manifold gasket and lifters on a V-engine while in my car. The engine work was easy, but so much crap to remove and push aside. Had a bunch of freezer bags and a marker lol. Still took me 16hrs because I've never done it before and I wanted to make sure everything was clean while reassembling it.
@@Qui-9 i still bag parts on my personal projects that I've done a million times. I never know when I'm going to get pulled away. Don't want to lose anything.
It takes a lot of repetition to get to the kind of virtuoso level of skill that can sort out a pile of parts with near motor-memory ease. His is a rare skill, but for most everyone else, labeling and even photographing is good practice, especially if a project is going to take a while.
Owning a 740/50 i bet you know trans fail safes on the 5hp24/30s. Love my 740iL

It's an autopsy table! The red blood, the drainage, the stainless steel table and all these parts....

I can't even take more than 2 screws off at a time without forgetting where the individually go. The G.O.A.T
It is always fascinating to watch experts at their craft. Taking things apart what appears so nonchalant, but knowing exactly what they are doing. Yrs of experience.
It would be interesting to see the final outcome, and show us what wasn't working.
This is crazyeeeee. This guy is a wizard. Its a miracle that a transmission can even work with its 800 parts.
That’s why I prefer a manual transmission. Less parts, easier to rebuild and more reliable.
@@applepoop10 manuals more reliable? Brother you been living under a rock? Current autos are superior to manuals in every single way and there isnt an argument to that. Honestly
@@Berto-1117 still i'd rather drive a slow manual than fast auto
There's a common misconception that automatics are less reliable than a manual because there are more parts. That is simply not true before they wear down to that point. All the parts are new on each new unit, and the lifespan of each part is not affected by its proximity with other parts.
When a machine enters the phase where a significant portion of the parts are beginning to wear at different rates, then yes, you'll have to replace more parts in the same time frame if it had more to begin with.
If there's anything that fueled that misconception, it's because an automatic transmission contains parts which are more prone to wear in the first place, such as valve parts, seals, wear rings, clutch friction material, a filters/strainers, etc. A manual has synchros and the clutch is external. Things like that.
@@applepoop10 I think even if an auto transmission is 5% less reliable, I'll still take it because its so easy to work with. Think about the 500 shifts you have to do every day. I'm going to say the data says that Auto is pretty reliable
I don't know a thing about transmissions but it's amazing to watch you work.
I know enough to not even try, I’ll just drive to Amarillo & let them do it for me

That is a 460le
What a pleasure watching this craftsman. he reminds me of some of the professionals that I had the honor to work with 40 years ago as a young man. They have a passion for learning the in's and out's and for continuously training and improving, & sharing their knowledge. One of these fine Craftsmen was my dad. What a great channel!
I hope to one day be as proficient as this guy as far as being a mechanic. I have to separate out everything and I always label and color code things. This dude literally throws everything in a pile and can probably put it together with his eyes closed. The sign of a true master at his craft.
This guy is a goat.
I grew up watching all hot rod tv shows and I can only remember sometimes they put an emphasis on transmissions . Then back to the engine to show dyno results. I have to say I'm ashamed for not thinking a transmissions weren't important. I am glue to this channel and you sir Richard are a wizard. The amount of machining and engineering that goes into a transmission is unbelievable. The amount of knowledge Richard has about them is unbelievable. Great channel!
A manual transmission is simple compared to computer controlled automatic transmission☝️
An automatic 18 wheeler transmission does not have anything near close that complicated compared to regular car transmission! What I wanted to say is that there is no need to make it like that to be functional and robust! But hey... engineers need jobs also
This. So on my first actually built street car I learned my lesson the hard way, now mind you it was an old car and I was but a kid with something to prove and nothing to show for it. Well I built a 1993 Firebird Trans Am turbo forged pistons everything. Had it chipped(old obd1 prom shit right there) well I kept blowing up transmissions, and me thinking nothing of it kept replacing them as, welp you cant modify a transmission. I learned my lesson long after that car died. Now I'm sitting pretty at just north of 1000 and am knowing I've reached the upper limit of my 6L90 honestly suprised it survived to that level of power, but it's a good trans, ordering a fully built one soon.
Yup many people don't realize that engines aren't everything to make you faster. A good trans with a good amount of gear and program makes a huge difference
15,000 horsepower and a super race built Trans won’t do you any good with normal tires either. I always laugh when people say they’re pushing 500+ horsepower and I look at the size of their tires….
When I was a kid my dad worked at a dealership and on some Saturdays he would let us go to work with him. I always thought it took several tool boxes worth of tools to work on transmissions. This shop has done wonders to help me understand that good trans mechanics are worth their weight in gold.
It does. Sometimes it's just easier to abuse a tool than going to fetch the proper tool.
Never thought I would stay and watch a transmission autopsy...stainless table with all that red...piece by piece taken out and examined and explained .. very nicely done
The fact that this piece of machinery exists and that this man can tear it all down and put it back together is simply mind-blowing! It's amazing what we can accomplish. ._. Thank you for this video, it was fascinating and very interesting to see.
Ah just luv how he shoves all the parts into a pile , an he knows exactly where it all goes back an he checks those rings like Dollar bills ..He's a joy to watch .
I freaking love this channel. It's like watching a surgeon do a case study. Quickly working, every movement has purpose. It's so calming 😂
So, anyone else here who knows almost nothing about car stuff but is sitting here late in the evening enraptured with this video?
I now know 20x more about the internal workings of a transmission assembly than I did 15 minutes ago. Enjoyable to watch him work and make comments as he dissects each level!
damn richard, literally every video i watch i just sit here thinking "how the fuck does this guy retain where every part goes during a tear down. amazing

Jesus I’m worry about changing the spark plug on my lawn mower in case I can’t get it back together again lol
Youre in the right place. UA-cam should be accredited lol
I started at 10 years old by watching my Dad rebuild a 2 barrel carburetor. Rip it apart and throw all the parts in a basket and into cleaner and then rip open a rebuild kit and slap it all back together again. I was amazed and thought I could never do that. From carburetors to valve jobs…..then to full engine overhauls and then when I was a senior in HS, I could rip the whole drive train apart and put it back tougher again. I would balance the engine so that you couldn’t tell that the engine was running. Takes desire and time to learn the basics and by then you start suggesting modifications to make it run smoother and more efficient. It all starts with sincere desire to learn, plus respect for those who did it before you. In my case, my Dad is my ultimate super hero!
Mr. Richard, Ms. Theresa and Mr. Trent, thanks for your videos. When I was a kid in college in the late 60's and early 70's. I worked in a SERVICE station in upstate New Your, not a gas station. We did all kinds of work, brakes, suspension, exhaust, starter/generator rebuilds, clutch replacements, engine rebuilds/swaps and anything other shops would not do. That said, transmissions were not in our wheelhouse. They were kind of 'black boxes' between the engine and the 3rd member, especially automatics. We typically sent them to a transmission shop, both automatics and standards, to be repaired, and never spent any time learning them beyond R&R. . Watching your videos has educated me in how automatic transmissions work. Your encyclopedic knowledge of all the transmissions that you see in your shop is amazing. Your videos have been very enlightening for me in how modern automatic transmissions operate. I wish I had known this back in the day. Thank you and I hope you and your family prosper at your shop, you are a true craftsman. And scratch Annie's ears for me.
Great video! Guys like this in their crafts are amazing. 30+ years of doing their work they become masters. Notice how he knew down to the bearing what was right and what wasn’t. When you go to a pro shop and get a quote, this is what you’re paying extra for. A quality job done and a transmission that does its job the first time. Great vid. Would love to see you reassemble
When only rich people can afford "quality" then it becomes irrelevant for us poor people... Nobody will do this kind of specialized work for free, so until then we're stuck buying crappy work and paying 3x for it...

Me3chanically it looked good but he didn't check the electrical parts. I imagine he tests the solenoids for function. Richard never said what computer this was attached to or other details. I suspect the solenoids and/ or wiring issues in the vehicle.
There has to be a base pressure issue with this trans. Who I perceive to the the owner responded to my comment with a little more info on what the concerns were. It could also be a tuning or pressure control solenoid issue.
I added a comment requesting some video of the diagnostic process

They wont because more than likely it was something during install by the owner. Maybe not seating the converter properly or not filling the trans with fluid properly. Probably was a good transmission.
