My company operates only 747 and MD11s. They make any mechanic and pilot today a damn good one. They're so fuckin hard to work on and parts are rare are harder to come by
As a current MD11 Capt for UPS, I can attest it’s a great airplane to fly! Automated system controllers and nice flying characteristics make it a joy to fly!
I worked for AA in 1974 or so. My favorite ride was the DC-10. At that time, AA had a camera that looked out the front, so you could watch on big TV screens the take-offs and landings almost like you were a pilot. Lots of fun!
When that DC-10 crashed after losing an engine on takeoff at O'Hare. The passengers could see their fate. That was the end of the "video takeoff" feature...
Ohhhhh!!!,Yesssss!!!.Two of the most admired icons on Earth, gone for ever!!!. What a pity!!!!.I was at The Twin Towers shopping in the lobby, just 2 weeks before that horrible 9-11 terrorist attack. But nevere could fly,in a MD-11. :-( !!.
So satisfying seeing these beautiful old birds, such magnificent beasts! The pitch attitude on take off & landing is so cool, and that Finnair machine absolutely aced the landing in what was notoriously on of the "tougher" jets to handle.

I'm happy to see brazilian aircrafts on this channel. VARIG and VASP. Thanks JP.
I recall flying out of Newark in the late eighties, seeing the top hundred feet or so standing above the low cloud cover has the sun rose behind them. Two perfect stainless steel cubes floating on a bed of clouds. That's something I will always remember and Never Forget.
As far as I know the MD-11 wasn't built in high numbers, but the variety of airlines that operated the type was really amazing. Great video of these operations!
My favorite aircraft. MD-11 has the most awesome startup sound. Was a thrill to push them back on the ramp in its time. Its a shame they disappeared other than cargo.
I loved both the MD 11 and the L1011. Especially when the engine on top started to reve up at take off. That low drowning sound would put me to sleep every time.
Truly miss those days. The MD-11 is a great airliner and I enjoyed every flight on it.Landing in Hongkong Kai Tak is still vivid in my mind...felt like sitting in a fighter jet
I know this video mainly focuses on MD11 but the first minute of this video is amazing with shots of The Concorde and the original WTC in the background Classic!!!
Worked for Quantem Aviation (Subcontractor for UPS that would do all the ground work at KSLC) and these things would be delayed more than any other plane due to mechanical problems. Also suck to work in because the cargo bay AC never worked when loading or unloading. It felt like a blessing when I got transferred to the A300-600
Man That Scene From 0:45 to 0:58 with the Varig Md-11 and the Twin Towers is so depressing. 3 amazing things That are gone and I will never be able to experience 😕

Reminds me of the handful of AA MD-11s I’d see when I lived near DFW. This was around 9/11, as the airline was already getting rid of them. Always a beautiful sight. 0:58 Coincidence as I was typing this.
AA & DL Md-11s should have been used as LAX-JFK trans continental flagship planes rather than retired because they should be 8-10 years newer than a B767-200 or B757-200 both were 5-10 years old when MD-11 entered service in 1990-1991
@ I agree with you on that one but if you're around the 1970s 1980s you would have seen Trijet domestic flights in the United States. Examples are AA DC-10 ORD-LAX with a notable crash AA191 and UA DC-10 DEN-PHL TWA LGA-MIA
I was A MD 11 Captain when I worked for FEDEX but after one of the planes crashed before i could even take a picture I stopped working for Fedex and started to Work for swissair
I was set to argue whether these aircraft were DC 10-30 or DC10-50 models not MD-11’s but you were right. I’ve flown DC-10’s with LTU, Finnair,, American, United, BA, butnever an MD-11. Delta flying an MD-11 that’s a new one
MD-11 could have been a commercial success if they ditched the tail engine, and made wings much longer with much bigger winglets, the third engine really made it uncompetitive against A330, 777 and 767. The airport gate size wingspan limit is 65 meters, but the MD-11 only had a wingspan of 52 meters, that is 13 meters wasted, if the wings were 64.8 meters long with bigger winglets the MD-11 could have been about 10% better fuel economy, and ditching the tail engine would also improve fuel economy by 20%, MD-11 with 2 engines and longer wings with bigger winglets would have been about 25% more fuel efficient and that would have made the MD-11 much more futureproof and more competitive and would have sold 1,000+ units instead of just 200. McDonnell Douglas also might not have went bankrupt if the MD-11 had been a commercial success
0:11 AirFrance CONCORD on the background. Ahh those good old days.
i love how airports back in those days were dominated by MD-11’s and 747 classics. But now they’re a rare sight.
Yeah now we just got now A bunch of 737’s and dreamliners
My company operates only 747 and MD11s. They make any mechanic and pilot today a damn good one. They're so fuckin hard to work on and parts are rare are harder to come by
There were Concorde's, too.
MD-11s are still in use. Go to Memphis, FedEx has a huge fleet. They we're never a good passenger jet.
When ETOPS 180 came in, that was the beginning of the end of the tris and quads
As a current MD11 Capt for UPS, I can attest it’s a great airplane to fly! Automated system controllers and nice flying characteristics make it a joy to fly!
A B always heard the DC-10 and MD-11 referred to as “gentleman’s aircraft” due to how nice it was to fly
I have hundreds of hours on an MD-11 sim. the LSAS system made the handling feel very smooth, like an Airbus or 787 fly by wire. good times.
CaptainSazzman as an Aircraft Mechanic for UPS I completely disagree with you! Haha
@@adashiell1 compared to the jets like the 767 or 747, the MD11 handling feels nicer
MD11 is just so awesome along with the MD80

Richard Shelton Unfortunately the passengers on AA 191 had that camera too.
When that DC-10 crashed after losing an engine on takeoff at O'Hare. The passengers could see their fate. That was the end of the "video takeoff" feature...
Alex Lopez a Mexican airline called Interjet still does that and it’s pretty cool but unnerving to see how much the plane is actually moving
They had those cameras on their 747s as well didn't they?
I used to work on the DC10 series & the MD11 series, miss them!
Had the pleasure of flying on a Finnair MD-11 to Helsinki back in 2004. Great ride.
