Man this give me goosebumps. Those McDonell Douglas MD-11 were beautiful, with the colors of Alitalia it was the golden age of aviation, I remember as a kid how glamorous it was to fly and all those fancy aircraft with such fine colors, it was a good time. Flying now is boring.
I wish aircraft manufacturers still made commercials like these for their aircraft.
McDonnell Douglas had the best of these
I wish all commercials were like old
I'm pretty sure they still make some sort of commercials for airline executives...
There unsafe because of the Swiss air 111 accident
Absolutely! Airbus, kinda did one for its a350
The test aircraft in this video, N111MD (N601FE) and N211MD (N602FE) are both still flying today with almost 90,000 flight hours.
That's actually incredible
Update : As of 30 April 2023, N601FE has been officially WFU. However, its sister ship, N602FE is still active.

One of my all time favorite aircraft, love that grinding sound at take-off when full power is applied. Extremely comfortable in any seat.
I love MD11 in FedEx livery! :))

Thank You for this video. I was involved with the MD-11 flight test program on Ship 448. This was and is a great aircraft and this video brings back many good memories of those days.
I grew up with my dad working at Boeing, and I later worked on 747's and 777's as a mechanic. Have to admit, though, the DC-10 and MD-11 is a beautiful aircraft. Its to bad poor management killed off the commercial side of McDonnell Douglas. Sadly, Boeing stupidly put a lot of that same management team in the company after the merger. It changed the entire culture of Boeing.
Thanks for that insight Eric, very interesting.
Eric W People who continued to work on McDonnell Douglas military side felt the same about Boeing.
Worst thing that happened to Douglas Aircraft,
was McDonnell. Second worst, was Boeing.
When I was at Douglas, they made pencils that
said McDonnell Douglas . Douglas was at the
eraser end. For some reason, they got sharpened
down a LOT, at the beginning, then never sharpened
again.

One of my fav planes, even now in 2014 :)
It was very satisfying to see the first Md11 take off from west ramp there at Long Beach airport. It was fuselage #446 and I was an aircraft electrician at the time and they allowed us to go to the flight ramp to watch its maiden flight back in the early 90’s. I think it was 1991. DAC was a good company to work for. Today is 10/29/2022
You know seeing one of these before they retired will feel good to tell to the new generation of kids. Feel proud of yourselves if you've at least lived in that era or seen any! :)
I am from the new generation and saw lots of MD-11. On my 13th birthday this year I finnaly saw an MD-11
You can't help but feel sorry for MDC...they had such high hopes for the MD-11 and it sort of imploded.
Beautiful aircraft Newtown but it was part of the demise of McDonnell Douglas. It didn't meet its performance specs for airlines and it was simply left behind by the 777 and A330/340. It was a modest update of the DC-10 with new technology was called for
My Father was on the design team for the DC-10. I still remember when they held a public introduction at the St. Louis factory where I'm from, and yes, I know it wasn't built here. Actually, I think the event was only for VIP, family & friends and the media. My first flight on a DC-10 was when we made a trip to California back in 1972. My Father made point of stopping over in Dallas so we could fly on an American Airline's DC-10. I loved that plane!! TWA was the biggest airline (hub) here and they used L10-11s, so we didn't see many DC-10s back in the day. Btw, I'm not a big fan of the rear engine. It looks like an afterthought.
tscooter22 I miss living in St. Louis. I miss DC-10s. I also miss all those TWA L1011s.
Crosswind landings were performed in Glasgow Montana!
Great video! Very interesting, although a bit sad because the MD-11 turned out to be not too successful.
Too bad it never performed well and was killed by the 777 and A330/340 program. The MD-11 was always a gorgeous plane.
Fantastic. Great to see this infomercial!
Sad that these birds are not in service today...
They are just not passenger service
So gorgeous
MD-11 1 epic airplane!
12:00 that was the problem with 737 lately :
The reversers would engage 'accidently'
No... they do not deploy accidentally! At least they shouldn't if designed properly! I had to rewire the relays that inhibited the reverse system as part of my job as avionics flight test engineer. The FAA asked us to perform this test, due to the crash and loss of all souls,
May '91 aboard the 767-300 Lauda air disaster in Thailand when the T/R's deployed accidentally!
I can understand why airliners bought this beauty, i would so too in the first second of seeing this promo :P
Thank you for posting this, comimg sunday i will be on my last passenger flight from AMS-YYZ with KLM.
I love these big birds, never flown in one yet....
I did with Finair to HongKong is actually nice and comfy ! although have bad reputation of crashes like all MD's
3:46 For a moment I thought he was going to enter a spin, lol.
Car Wash Studios- You are not the only one. Could you imagine what they could be doing now?!?!?!?! Let's start counting our pennies!
I wonder why didn't MDC ditch the tri-engine config & developed the MD-11 as a twinjet instead? It would have probably been much more beneficial & we'd probably have more MD-11 still flying today.
Yes, that could work, but then the MD-11 would not be the same, the MD-11 looks beautiful as a trijet, but it would not look the same as a twin jet. It would basically be an A330.
At the time the MD-11 was designed the ETOPS ("extended-range twin operations"; alternatively "engine turns or passengers swim") rules required twinjets to stay within 120 minutes' flying time of the nearest airport. Trijets weren't subject to such limitations which made them ideal for many intercontinental routes.
The FAA increased the ETOPS limit to 180 minutes in 1988, and in so doing arguably doomed the MD-11 to market failure (but of course it was far too late for McDD to change to a twinjet by then).
MD-11 was so ahead of its time, great plane. Too bad airlines dont find economical anymore and commercial airlines use it anymore )':
The DC10 limped ahead of the L1011 to win the brutal trijet race. That gave just enough room for the MD11. But the DC10's victory margin was not big enough for the MD11 to have a substantial enough R&D base. The MD11 ended up being just a warmed over derivative of the DC10, a sitting duck to be chewed up by the upcoming A330s and 767s! The MD11 was doomed from the start. Its downfall could be traced back to the L1011!
That tail shake looked pretty scary.
like it a lot!
The MD-11 or, as the pilots called it, the "Mad Dog"
I think that was Md80
Mad-Dog: MD-80
Mighty-Dog: MD-11
I wondered where these first 5 test airframes are now. Anybody know their registration numbers?
Mostly all of them with FedEx.
N111MD (N601FE) was with FedEx, now retired. N211MD (N602FE) is still active with FedEx, so is N311MD which was the only one going into passenger service. I'm not sure which airline and reg., I believe it to be a Chinese one tho.
I just Love the DC 10, and follow on MD 11Aircraft. It's so very sad that we've allowed all American Aircraft Makers except for Boeing to go out of the business of making the best aircraft in World. I sincerely hope Boeing is able to last in the long run as well as it would be a terrible day when the country that invented heavier than air flight no longer made civilian aircraft. Even though Boeing builds far better planes than any other out there it's very very hard to compete with a company that's subsidized but not one but many government's. I will admit too that Airbus is building better quality aircraft than they built previously, The A380 is a wonder of modern aviation and aeronautical engineering, and for its mammoth size its even graceful and touch beautiful, then again almost all aircraft are beautiful to me while in flight, well most except much of what Russia has strapped wings to, unlike any other nation they succeeded In making much of their aircraft anything but graceful and beautiful in flight or on the ground, in fact most of their designs look as if they bullied their way into the air fighting it and forcing flight upon it, in a way then I suppose it fits. Even they are building some beautiful planes lately starting with the MIG 29. But I'm straying Even though Airbus has improved and even though I can hardly wait till I can fly on an A380 in my own suite like in the days of the Pan Am Clippers, Boeing still designs and builds the Rolls Royce of aircraft. Let's see what happens when the entire roof of an Airbus separates from cockpit to vertical Stabilizer, or a gigantic hole the size of an olympic swimming pool blows out the side and roof of an A380 what happens, does it land its passengers safely? I sure hope so because incidents similar will occur sometime in their life cycles, as for me Ill trust the tried and true Boeing every time especially when considering airbusses record so far, as well as pilot opinions and comparisons.

Did I see the MD-11 smiling at 5:30?
So it wasn't just me. It has cute little eyebrows, too.

PSA(Please Smile Amigo) defenetly was a happy airline.
+95shredder PSA flew specially configured L-1011s with air stairs (only two were ever produced that way). As far as I can see, PSA merged (in 1987) before the MD-11 was launched (in 1988). Maybe a former PSA mechanic or painter worked for MD at the time, and did that as a joke. Good observation!
+Louis Brasil
Yes, I saw that happy smile too!
When i went to Hawaii as a kid we flew on a MD11 there and back. Very nice plane and comfortable. I thought that being such a long flight we were gonna fly on a 747. I saw so many 747 roll past our gate, I was sure one of them was gonna be the plane to take us. But then this tri jet pulls up to our gate and I felt so disappointed. Later I found out that 747s are mainly used for international flights. In that five hour flight from Seattle to Honolulu, the MD11 won me over. It was so spacious ( I was 11 at the time so everything looked extra big), the in flight meal was delicious, they let me drink all sparkling cider and Pepsi I wanted, we watched Jurassic Park, they even let me go up to first class for a little bit to chit chat with my grandparents (they always flew first class),and most importantly to a 11 year old there wasn't a single shimmy of turbulence. They even had phones in the seats. MD 11 I salute you. Lol.
I'm jelly, would have loved to fly on a MD-11
The MD-11 was one of the most graceful planes every built. A real busy in the skies, there was something very elegant about a tr-jet aircraft with winglets...i flew several times on Swissair's MD-11...

@eimb1999 nooooo....that was Swissair 350 at 111 mph

Sony Alexander yes! 🤩
That sounds like a very nice experience. But unfortunately, Swissair went bankrupt. And the MD-11 is now used for cargo. You were very lucky.

next to an A380 it looks so much more modern in a strange way
and what is that strange way?

This A/C will always...ALWAYS have a special place in my heart.
My Great Aunt was a part of the MD team who designed this. I used to have a ton of MD swag that she gave me.
Nice background soundtrack starting at 2:20 and ending in 4:29. Those 90s synthesizers!
The soundtrack reminded me of when I was back in high school watching science movies in class, lol.
My favorite synthesizer from that decade is the Yamaha SY-77. I've always liked Yamaha keyboards.
love it
Brilliant soundtrack to a great video 😊
Awesome Aircraft, its a shame ill never get to go on one. :(

So sad.
If you wanna die that much, then there are other ways.
GianCarlo M. She was an extremely reliable and safe airplane. The early DC-10 accidents due to the CBD and engine strut break in Chicago (caused by faulty maintenance , not a fault of the plane) tarnished her reputation forever, but she and her sister DC-10 are beautiful, safe, reliable and excellent planes.

This is simply amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this! The MD-11 was another beautiful jet. I especially liked how modern (for that era) the wings were, with the winglet design being unique to it.
Something is not right here...
Amazing MD-11 video! So 90's! So nostalgic! Love it!
I was fortunate to fly on an MD11 when I deployed to and from Afghanistan via Kuwait on World Airways. It was by far my favorite flight and my first transatlantic flight that I'd gladly take again. I'm too young to have remember flying anything older. The take off was insanely powerful and it was so smooth and quiet at cruising altitude. We all loved it and I miss how unique planes used to look. My favorite plane!
Such a great looking aircraft. Too bad the tiny horizontal stabilizer makes it handle like a half-empty swimming pool and a b1tch to land.
That don’t matter when it is a COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT. Let me guess, you be the type of nigga to make a city bus drift with full passengers...It is that type of thinking that you have as to why cruddy planes like the 787 exist....

I Swear. I Would give up all of my possessions just to bring back McDonnell Douglas. They made the BEST aircraft EVER!!
They merged with Boeing in 1997.
I Know, but it's not the same.
Yes to the DC-3, DC-7, DC-9, DC-8....The MD-11 was a failure....American Airlines got rid of them in just 2 years. Way too many accidents involving the relatively small # that were built.
I Agree on the MD-11 being a failure, but it is still a beautiful bird and FedEx is still using MANY of them.
I Already flew on PH-KCG From AMS-ATL back in 2012, It was the best flight I have ever had! It was fast, comfortable, zero turbulence (the fasten seatbelt sign didn't come on ONCE mid-flight, except for landing of corse) and the food was actually delicious!
The L-1011 is my favorite wide body tri-holer, but I remember the MD11 was super advanced when it was introduced.
Watching these old videos makes my mind wonder what I was doing when these different segments were filmed in real time. Does anyone else suffer from nostalgia?
When considering the awesome efficiency of today's turbo fan jet power-plants, 3-engined, wide body, smooth, roomy and very comfortable L-1011 and MD-11 commercial passenger aircraft should be brought back into service for long haul cross oceanic flights. If given the choice, I'd take a tri jet wide body over a bi jet wide body for such travel anyday of the week.🙏🇺🇸👍

Thank you very much for this video. I am a loyal and passionate DC-10 lover. Oops must be said. I thought the only thing added to the MD-11 was winglets. So much for my knowledge. "My Bad".😂😂😂 I still love them both, the DC-10 and the MD-11.
I will miss this aircraft, seriously been one of my favourite aircraft out there. LAst flight was with a Martinair (now a days only Cargo flights as well) was from Amsterdam to Lanzarote and then through to final destination Fuertaventura (Gran Canaria islands). The flights where smooth and the airplane was spacious, given plenty of room for the passengers to roam around in during mid-flight.
I flew in them as well to Gran Canary , Tenerife, Ibiza, Mallorca, Heraklion, Antalya, Faro Portugal, Malaga, Alicante, and a few others with Martin air

If only McDonnell Douglas had delivered the 1996 MD-11ER in 1991, the airports would be a little less monotonous these days.
I was present at Mojave Aerotest when they delivered the first MD-11 To Fed EX. It was a magnificent experience. I was delivering parts in the final days of pre delivery from Long Beach, CA McDonnell Douglas facility to Mojave, CA.
I think if the MD-11 was successful, MCDonnell Douglas would have never needed to merge to stay alive and they would have been making some very competitive commercial aircraft today.
What is interesting is that the MD-11 rarely needed the rudder engine except for short runway operation or running close to MTOW.. It was designed to meet ETOPS for overseas airline flights. The benefit (and downfall) of MCD aircraft was the "old style" in which they were assembled. It made them indestructible, but difficult to discount due to high labor involved. As far as any "bad culture" transfer from MCD to Boeing, if anything MCD brought more frugal ways to over budget Boeing.
MCD was still better than Airbus when it came to passenger comfort. But facts are facts, MCD was capital poor and unable to position itself with the changes deregulation brought to the US airline market.
I flew both the MD-11 and the DC-10, as well as the L-1011 and B-747-400. I liked all of them, but the fact is that the Douglas products were under-engineered in some key aspects. Accordingly, adding Douglas culture to Boeing was NOT beneficial, the MAX debacle clearly demonstrates this.
@@bradcrosier1332 No disagreement. The 10 and 11 were under engineered, that is how the 10 got to market so fast. Just some of the safety features of the 10 were just plain nonsensical, but met the purpose of the FAA regs, but not the spirit. As for the MAX, I will disagree. Boeing & Southwest own that one. They were extending the life of the 737 long before MCD came around. Platform management & Renton assembly was not run by anyone associated with legacy MCD. There is a difference between under engineering and taking short cuts. SWA pressure provoked Boeing shortcuts. Just because legacy Boeing employees like to blame MCD for everything, that does not make it all true. I mean we are what, 27 years post merger? When do you start owning it?
@@spuwho - It’s the overall corporate culture - the same one that only put one stick shaker (second optional at extra $) on the DC-10, contributing significantly to the AA191 accident. Yes, faulty maintenance practices set the stage, but lack of redundant design in a critical system (along with poor design on the slat mechanism) denied the crew the opportunity to avoid the accident - to at least as great a degree as the MCAS accidents.
I’ll agree that Boeing and WN share blame for extending the life of the 737 beyond what it should have been (they should have gone clean sheet after the NG); also for killing the 757 which would have been able to have been what the MAX tries to be - though a clean sheet narrow-body would still be needed, but a re-engined 757 could have been a better stop-gap than the MAX.
I’ve talked to a number of people who legitimately point to the shift that occurred after the “merger.” Probably more accurately MD using Boeings money to buy and infiltrate Boeing. Here’s an article that pretty well describes it and matches what I’ve been told by numerous insiders:
qz.com/1776080/how-the-mcdonnell-douglas-boeing-merger-led-to-the-737-max-crisis/amp/
@@bradcrosier1332 Yes, I have read this article and several books that have come out post merger so these items are well known to me. All I can say is that Stonecipher was right but went about it the wrong way. And I have nothing good to say about anyone who came from the Jack Welch school of leadership. They for the most part have flopped. Boeing was no longer this regional engineering club. They were now a global concern that had impacts outside of that little nest called Seattle. BCA was never told how to engineer by senior leadership, they were simply given cost and revenue targets to meet and left it to the managers to work it out. Something that almost *all* publicly traded companies are held to. So in some ways Boeing's culture, while admired, was no longer in line with the expectations of a new era in passenger air. Learn how to engineer in new ways or die as a concern. Many legacy Boeing employees resistance to finding new ways to make things work were a known hindrance to reaching the next level. A "we don't do it this way" prevailed. Instead of finding a new way, it was all about preserving the old way. And when a merged company spends more time preserving a former culture that company has to die or suffer a major setback to get everyone to stop and refocus on who they are. And this is where Stonecipher failed and his subsequent replacements. But what I found utterly distasteful was after the second MAX crash, this outpouring of legacy Boeing employees casting blame on something and someone else. Look, the plane has a Boeing logo, came out of a Boeing factory and therefore you all take responsibility for its performance. It's a bitter pill to swallow but from now on "you own it".
@@spuwho - Fair enough, but I still see more Douglas-isms in the MAX debacle than Boeing-isms - the common thread with AA191 in particular.
The MD-11 should’ve been a twin not a trijet. Had that been the case it probably would have been more successful.
Nice film. Thanks for posting. I am a big fan of Douglas aircraft and will be saddened when AA retires the last of its DC-9-80s. Still, the failure of the MD-11, a last ditch effort, delivered the death blow to Douglas.
Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing. December 1997 was the last time I flew this aircraft. It was Garuda Indonesia. LAX-CGK with technical stop in Honolulu. I can not believe that was 17 years ago!

Wow, I didn't know they shoot with potatoes back in 1990. I thought that's more a 70s' thing. Great video and make me really appreciate 4K HDR videos
Around this time I was taking a business class in college. We watched a video about airplane manufacturers, and the criticism of McDonnell Douglas was that their new planes were just like the old ones.
What sucks is that the MD-11 was still technically a modern aircraft, but because of what happened to McDonnell-Douglas , it died off too early, the DC-10Mwas from the 70s and was still going strong in the 90s, 20 years later. 20 years later, a 90s aircraft like the MD-11 Is disappearing, even aircraft from the 80s like the MD-80s are outlasting it still to this day

Well, that's partially true, however it wasn't an issue with the MD11. It was an issue with the OVER THE COUNTER IFE system that Swissair purchased. The power supply on the IFE system that swissair purchased. Not the MD11 itself. Nice try though.
