This is an old -30 series that came from the factory with the extra landing gear (like the MD11), but it was removed to make space for the firefighting tank. Plus, the extra weight is no longer an issue since no seats/baggage/passengers. But it still has the more powerful engines that are known for a certain whine at idle.. which is also heard on 747-200's and the early A300's that have the same engine (GE CF6-50). That whine can be heard here just as they were turning the corner.
@@YQRAviation The center gear doesn't bear as much weight as people think. There is a weight penalty (About 10% of the normal max landing weight) for landing with the center gear retracted on most variants of the -30 and -40. It's primary purpose is the extra set of brakes for a high-speed abort/reject on takeoff, increasing MTOW.
This reminds me of the days when I flew through Detroit to Tokyo on NWA. They had so many DC-10's at the terminal there. You guys are seriously bringing back the memories today. ❤ That was the mid 90's. Your 747 days do the same. Thank you!
Unfortunately, the plane killed too many domestic passengers and was a staple of crashes in the 1970's and 80's. The plane was prone to hydraulic failures like the infamous Souix City crash of flight 232. As such, it was removed from passenger service and used for cargo and tankers.
@@peteanddrake4242Not really. It was phased out of passenger service because the plane is too old. Why use the DC-10 when you've got a plethora of options like the A330 and the A350, Boeing 777 and 787, etc. All these planes are more cost-effective to operate and maintain. Had a DC - 10 do a few low level passes close to my home to put down fire retardant a few years ago. Watching that kind of plane flying over mountains and through canyons and dropping with incredible accuracy is really something to see.
Thanks for this. In the 90’s I did the Portland to Nagoya trip regularly. Very impressive to see 4 or 5 MD11’s lining up on the taxiway. My favorite plane for long distance flights. I flew on the DC-10 for the first time when I was a teenager back in 1972. It was United Airlines. United and American were the launch customers in 1971. In 1972, Lockheed put out the L-1011.
