That's a recurring motif with Brian Singer's X-Men films. There are always X's in the background, the curtains in Xavier's office, Logan's belt buckle, etc. Nice little touch.
Most people talk about the "mankind has evolved into us" and "we are the future, not them" lines but the one that really hits me because it equally shows how menacing Magneto is yet he still respects Charles so much is... " I will bring you hope, old friend, and I ask only one thing in return: don't get in my way." Gives me chills EVERY time.
The irony of Magneto being embittered by his experiences in the Holocaust but then writing off the entire human race and saying “they no longer matter”. He’s too jaded by his own demons to see how close he comes to being what he hates.
@@Callofduty2704 I don't know if he thinks all humans are the same. I think it's more that he feels like eventually it has to be them (humans), or us (mutants). He feels like baseline humans won't just let mutants replace them, and he's right.
We were truly blessed to have two of the finest actors ever in Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for many years in the X-Men movies. They brought so class and elegance in every scene they had together. These two gentlemen were born to play Professor X and Magento
"Erik? What are you doing here?" "Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?" "Don't give up on them, Erik." "What would you have me do, Charles? "I will bring you hope, old friend and I ask for only one thing in return: Don't get in my way. We are the future, Charles, not them. They no longer matter."
The little edge of pleading Sir Ian McKellen gives that last sentence is what makes their interactions so brilliant. If Professor X and Magneto were anyone else, these films wouldn't have been half as memorable.
I've said before, I'll say it again, I honestly consider Magneto Ian Mckellen's best role. The nuanced mixture of conviction and moral ambiguity of his plight is absolutely fascinating, right from this first scene. 'I will bring you hope, old friend. And I ask only one thing in return...don't get in my way. We are the future Charles, not them!'
I still side with Xavier, Erik wants to kill humanity just to prove a point, I don’t and never will agree with that, humans are flawed but most are innocents So no
The shadows embracing the opposite sides of their faces, you can see the gleam of humanity in Charles' eyes. And barely a shred of light in Erik's eyes, just resolve, and anger. Two Titans of different walks in life.
This is one of my favorite scenes in the X-Men films as well of any movie because it is well acted smartly written and the setting and mood help set the tone for the film.
Of all the things the Fox X-men movies got wrong about these x-men in general in terms of comic book accuracy, one thing they got totally right was the friendship of Charles and Erik. Also the fact that they were played by both these amazing actors was just a huge plus.
It's amazing how similar Captain Picard and Charles Xavier are in their principles and respect for freedom of choice. And yes, the fact that they're both played by the fabulous Patrick Stewart is just a (HUGE) bonus. 😊😊
I will never forget seeing this scene in the theatre. This moment sold me on Ian McKellen as an actor. Been a fan ever since. "I will bring you hope my friend." The delivery was perfect. You knew that meant bad bad things were going to happen and there was nothing that anyone was going to do to stop it from taking place.
Similar goals, they just had different ways of going about it while still remaining friends. Can't really call this a rivalry. More like a workplace dispute.
@@nostalgiatrip1,maybe,maybe not. That actually depends on whether you prefer to view their relationship as a complicated friendship(that's canon) or a tragic romance(that's Cherik fanfiction for you).
This is such a great scene. It is so captivating, the relationship between two old friends with deeply fundamental differences on how to resolve the major conflict. No two actors could have pulled this off any better. The strained relationship between them was one of my favorite things from these movies.
If this was a few decades ago I'd joke about getting mutated by radiation, but given the time we're in now, I'd say get yourself some CRISPR, a biology education and do your best.
For anyone reading the original Marvel X-men comics and to get this immortalised on screen, both Patrick Steward and Sir Ian Mckennan were the best choice - this franchise plays it firmly on the ground and real, and their on screen relationship is legendary. This introduction says it all - their struggle for a brave new world is no different to our world today.
This scene really sums up the relationship between Charles and Erik. These are two former friends caught in a conflict to which they have different opinions on how to resolve. And while those differences have driven them apart, they still respect each other and it’s clear (from Charles’s expression at the end) that at least one of them is willing to rekindle the friendship. It’s difficult to give up a longstanding relationship with anyone because of your values and beliefs. And this scene is a great example of that.

This was perfect casting. They bring a sense that these two have known eachother, fought beside and against eachother and yet even now are both friends and utterly comitted to their ideals. 'They have evolved since then.' 'Into Us.' in his own way Erik wants to see Charles's vision through. To give his friend a worldof peace..... by ensuring that mutants can't just be.... quietly removed from it.
This is my Ian makllen Is one of my favorite actors. He plays magneto so well. Not to mention he played Gandalf in both the hobbit and lord of the rings trilogy.
Magneto would never attack the X-Mansion because he still considers it to be a sacred place for mutants. I know he sends Mystique to sabotage Cerebro, but that was just to temporarily incapacitate Prof X. Erik would never attack the mansion like Stryker did in X2.
I just love these two. Both wants best for mutantkind but with different points of views. Despite those differences, they still see each other as friends
The way he says "don't get in my way" is full to the brim with conflicting emotions. Amazing. Mixture of decisive, sad because he knows Charles will not heed the warning and ultimately will end up destroying the friendship.
Even watching this scene now, it's still too damned good. The framing in each scene is textbook comic-book, and the performances are dead-on. This one scene conveys the sheer weight of history between two characters/friends/enemies on opposite sides of a moral divide. Masterful.
Fassbender and McAvoy are amazing but Stewart and McKellen give us amazing with 30 more years of experience on top. It's comparing 9s and 10s but I agree.

Magneto was never a villian ,I know that feeling
Not to mention, never once does he claim or even believe himself that Charles is his enemy.Instead,he only calls him old friend, implying that he still values their friendship first over any arguements they had.
Sure, he tries out humanity but not a villain, sure.
He is an extremist though, so yeah not at all villanously...
I like how the architecture show's a lot of X's, especially in the first shot.
That's a recurring motif with Brian Singer's X-Men films. There are always X's in the background, the curtains in Xavier's office, Logan's belt buckle, etc. Nice little touch.
One of my favourite scenes out of any X-men films
Most people talk about the "mankind has evolved into us" and "we are the future, not them" lines but the one that really hits me because it equally shows how menacing Magneto is yet he still respects Charles so much is...
" I will bring you hope, old friend, and I ask only one thing in return: don't get in my way."
Gives me chills EVERY time.
The irony of Magneto being embittered by his experiences in the Holocaust but then writing off the entire human race and saying “they no longer matter”. He’s too jaded by his own demons to see how close he comes to being what he hates.
bwcose his backstory is a j**
That's what makes him so interesting. He is basically the thing he grow to hate so much, but just on the opposite side.
@@Callofduty2704 I don't know if he thinks all humans are the same. I think it's more that he feels like eventually it has to be them (humans), or us (mutants). He feels like baseline humans won't just let mutants replace them, and he's right.
Example here is Dr Doom in the comics. He free his people, Latverians, from a dictator but Doom became what he hates and somehow he succeeded.
We were truly blessed to have two of the finest actors ever in Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for many years in the X-Men movies. They brought so class and elegance in every scene they had together. These two gentlemen were born to play Professor X and Magento

"Erik? What are you doing here?"
"Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers?"
"Don't give up on them, Erik."
"What would you have me do, Charles? I've heard these arguments before."
"It was a longtime ago. Mankind has evolved since then."
"Yes, into us. You sneaking randomly, Charles? Whatever are you looking for?"
"I'm looking for hope."
"I will bring you hope, old friend and I ask for only one thing in return: Don't get in my way. We are the future, Charles, not them. They no longer matter."
I will bring you hope....
just don’t get in my way
The little edge of pleading Sir Ian McKellen gives that last sentence is what makes their interactions so brilliant.
Personally I do rank Magneto higher then Gandalf but haven't yet seen enough of him to agree fully on that statement
It is a complex balancing act
Great acting, great dialog, just a great scene.
Being a kid you sided with Xavier.
Being an adult, you realized Magneto was right about humans.
Perfect casting for both characters (& Wolverine).
Does that mean as adults were side with magento
I still side with Xavier, Erik wants to kill humanity just to prove a point, I don’t and never will agree with that, humans are flawed but most are innocents
So no
@@ninjanibba4259 in Magneto's defense, he just wanted to turn people into mutants in the first movie, rather than killing them.
@@magallanesagustin4952 and that was a dumb plan
@@ninjanibba4259 I don't believe it's dumb that every human can get mutant DNA.
My god this is one of their best work of all time being in the X-men series
The shadows embracing the opposite sides of their faces, you can see the gleam of humanity in Charles' eyes.
And barely a shred of light in Erik's eyes, just resolve, and anger.
Two Titans of different walks in life.
My introduction to Sir Ian. A paragon of filmmaking talent and tolerance for all.
Magneto never wanted to hurt Professor X. Hence why he warned him not to get on his way
It's amazing how similar Captain Picard and Charles Xavier are in their principles and respect for freedom of choice. And yes, the fact that they're both played by the fabulous Patrick Stewart is just a (HUGE) bonus. 😊😊
Such a great scene. the script is just positively great. This is outstanding.
I can’t help but laugh when he says “we are the future Charles not them!” Seems funny for some reason to me
Similar goals, they just had different ways of going about it while still remaining friends. Can't really call this a rivalry. More like a workplace dispute.
Which only makes it more tragic. Why can't they just even admit they love each other?
@@dafilmqueen556 So more of a lovers quarrel then?
@@nostalgiatrip1,maybe,maybe not. That actually depends on whether you prefer to view their relationship as a complicated friendship(that's canon) or a tragic romance(that's Cherik fanfiction for you).
This is such a great scene. It is so captivating, the relationship between two old friends with deeply fundamental differences on how to resolve the major conflict. No two actors could have pulled this off any better. The strained relationship between them was one of my favorite things from these movies.
I want to be Magneto when I grow up!
which race or group of people need be in the concentration camps of the future then? can't have magneto without his tragic origins.
A psychotic murderer with failure to realize that stereotyping is what got him into his position.
*GODDAMN ! Patrick Stewart and ian mckellan ARE MASTERFUL in these films AS IS james mcavoy and michael fassbender, WE WERE TRULY BLESSED TO HAVE GROWN UP WITH THESE MAGNETO(s) AND XAVIER(s)*
And we learned 25 years into this franchise that Magneto was right all along. About everything.
I remember watching this film in the theater. I was so thrilled to finally see these iconic characters brought to life on the big screen. And Sir Ian stole the show with his performance.
This is definitely the best casting in comic book movie history
I’m glad we got these guys and James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender to play these characters
Scenes like this is why I think this was the best xmen flick
HOW was he so perfect for a villainous role like this while at the same time so perfect for gandolf
He brings that fierceness and wisdom into every role. “Go back into the abyss! Fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your master.”
Thank God for these two actors. This is one of my favorite scenes. I love their dialog here as it's an excellent set up for the rest of the movie
Great acting. This one scene describes both characters so well.
imagine acquiring one of the greatest actors to start your comic world… unbelievable
Fun Fact: David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake, wrote the screenplay for this film. This scene proves how good of a writer he is and how he understands these characters so well.
Charles: **OH MY GOSH WE'VE BEEN ARGUING LIKE THIS for nearly 50 YEARS!!**
All I see is Captain Picard is reasoning with Gandalf
Yeah, but this was before The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit.
@@BlackDiamond2718,that's exactly what I meant to say.

the mutants were wiped out by the humans
Sentinels in one timeline
Then genetically engineered disease in the new one.
The third ones the charm, also you see how magneto was right. Humans destroyed them, you can’t blame him for fightingv
@@alpha-omega74 reminds me of star trek DS9. The federation made a disease to kill the founders.
This was perfect casting. They bring a sense that these two have known eachother, fought beside and against eachother and yet even now are both friends and utterly comitted to their ideals.

'Into Us.'
in his own way Erik wants to see Charles's vision through. To give his friend a worldof peace..... by ensuring that mutants can't just be.... quietly removed from it.
This was honestly so amazing. They don’t make them like this anymore.
We are the future Charles not them. They don't longer matter I felt that so much 🌈
One of my favorite scenes in the series and definitely the best scene in this film. Thank you for posting.
Sometimes u lose faith in humanity 💔 though no one is perfect we must trust in God
ian McKellen is a sensational actor
This is my Ian makllen Is one of my favorite actors. He plays magneto so well. Not to mention he played Gandalf in both the hobbit and lord of the rings trilogy.
Miss the early 2000 era
Magneto would never attack the X-Mansion because he still considers it to be a sacred place for mutants. I know he sends Mystique to sabotage Cerebro, but that was just to temporarily incapacitate Prof X. Erik would never attack the mansion like Stryker did in X2.
This scene still slaps 👋🏻!!
Charles and Erik are like my grandpa and his brother, always fighting but forever friends, lol
These 2 actors have the sweetest relationship of anyone I’ve seen!!
One of the best scenes in the entire film. Brilliant. 📽😸

Two old friends that can only be enemies because their vision of mankind are too far apart
Am i the only one who believes. Eric still has good and love in his heart.
The way he says "don't get in my way" is full to the brim with conflicting emotions. Amazing. Mixture of decisive, sad because he knows Charles will not heed the warning and ultimately will end up destroying the friendship.
This is soo different x-men movie from all that came afterwards!! I love the mysterious music in the begining!!
I've been looking for this scene and now...now a part of me can relax having seen it.
Why couldn't Gandalf agree with Captain Picard?? 😭😭😭
Even watching this scene now, it's still too damned good. The framing in each scene is textbook comic-book, and the performances are dead-on. This one scene conveys the sheer weight of history between two characters/friends/enemies on opposite sides of a moral divide. Masterful.
I love how every conversation they have is still coming from a place of love. They are true friends.
They could not have found better actors to portray Professor X and Magneto, imo Fassbender and McAvoy will never surpass them
Fassbender and McAvoy are amazing but Stewart and McKellen give us amazing with 30 more years of experience on top. It's comparing 9s and 10s but I agree.
After MoM, i really hope they reunite in the MCU
We have this movie to credit for the rise of the superhero genre. I know other superhero movies existed before this, but this is the first one that actually *worked,* despite how goofy the source material was.

Sir Ian McKellen's Magneto was amazing he had a way of being serious but also funny with a one liner here and there i belive it was X2 when he and Mystique were almost hit by Cyclops's beam and both were sent diving with Magneto saying to Mystique one the ground "Come along dear this is one lovers quarrel we shouldn't get involved with".
I loved this scene
