A while back, I discarded a cheating jerk. That was my biggest and best declutter.
That is hysterical and sad at the same time.
Thanks, but I feel bad about posting it.
Yay Kimberly! I got rid of one of those too, many years ago.
I'm impressed that you were smart enough to value yourself. I have a tenant who is wasting her pretty on a cheater who speaks ill of her behind her back...He kisses and hugs in public...I've told her..but she is moving to the town near men's prisons in Arkansas ..She doesn't know which one he will be going to because of a recent " hit n run"..but she wants to be able to visit him.😢...
@@kimberlybush2219 I'm sorry you feel bad about posting. Anonymity is sometimes a good thing, lol. I rid myself of deadweight 52 years ago. Praise God, as I married the most wonderful man 50 years ago this July! My ex married 4 days after our divorce was final. I truly hope he had a happy life.
I def agree with towels.
Me Too!
I keep my plastic Walmart sacks in empty tissue boxes. Easy to stack.
Yes!...the "bag of bags"...use em for bathroom trash...
Sure do!
Same here! If I have too many, I stick them in the car and put them in the bin outside the food store.
Also use em in car 4 trash...
@@ginadowd1713I can never have too many of those plastic bags.
@@ginadowd1713That's a great idea!
I encourage you to put a Fire and Water resistant bag into the file cabinet for titles/certificates etc. We take pictures of each item and store them in those bags. A tragic event will help save them. Fire/water and if you need to leave, it’s in safe easy to grab file bags. I think they were about $30
I did not know that you can get fire resistant bags very good to know
Great idea!
Great idea
We keep most things until they break.
Same here and then I see if I can recycle for use in the house/garage.
I used to love those books! Tightwad Gazette was the best.
I only hang on to books that I absolutely love and may read again or loan to someone. I also have old towels for my dog when she's wet from the rain or a bath.
A hand mixer I received 49 years ago. It’s not pretty but it does the job. Good video. 💙💙💙
Good to know!
I give my old towels to veterinary hospital they use them do operations with on animals and then they toss them so it can help others to
Books are probably my biggest clutter item. But as I live alone, they feel like company or friends, so I keep them around. I made the mistake of getting rid of towels. Argh!
I still have and use my hand mixer that I got in the 60's. I wish I still had some of my childhood toys too.
I will NOT get rid of any slow cookers. I have 4. They are different sizes. Many weeks, I do batch cooking of one thing while other weeks I cook multiple meals on one day. I use them and they save me $$$: less eating away from home and they take very little energy to function!
Great tip!
I still have my Barbies and my favorite books. I consider myself a "cozy minimalist". I keep all the things I love but just a limited amount of them :) For instance, only 7 years of taxes and 10 of things like plastic bags, elastics, etc. It's enough! xoxo
For now, good work clothes (too small) which I cannot afford to buy in various sizes if I lose weight (thrift stores awful and $$$ now in my area). Old towels, 5 yr old paint that matches interior (Kelly Moore out of biz). Am releasing/decluttering items bit by bit as I have time.
I'm keeping work clothes that dont fit me yet as well.
Contact paper would spruce up the front of that desk. thanks for your videos.
Thanks for the tip!
My mending supplies, I don't throw clothes away, first they become ' house clothes' then they get mended, then they become rags or strips and I make braided rugs from them.
So creative and dedicated!
Dawn, a word about contact paper. Mostly, it costs less than peel-n-stick tiles or epoxy. The are many videos on 'how to epoxy countertops in the kitchen for under $500,' but a 36"x118" in granite or marble contact paper cost about $50. When I rented, I once had an ugly 4 ft bathroom vanity, which I covered in contact paper. Years later I visited someone who rented that same apt and the landlords had left the contact paper on it and it was still in great condition, so contact paper does hold up well.
You can also paint the countertop easily to look like marble. See ut
From a Minneapolis radio station called WCCO. I learned that once we had subflooring down on our new construction floor that I could use wallpaper glue and wallpaper on the floor covered with shellack. We chose a pattern that looked like wood...It held up for 5 years with toddlers and up to 1st grade
Never use polyurethane coating. It causes the wallpaper glue to separate.
@@pennynickels5216 That's why there's a saying, "As smart as paint."
It's ok to keep things that you enjoy and have meaning to you.
I keep things until they quit working.
If people judge based on appearances, they aren't a true friend.
You are a good person
I have my original blender(avocado) and my hand mixer and electric knife.. love your videos.. i love old towels.
How fun
I have my original 1971 Sunbeam Harvest Gold hand mixer and an electric knife my mother gave me when she was decluttering 45 years ago, lol. I keep the knife thinking there may be some foam I'll need to cut someday.
I won't get rid of my desk, which we bought years ago at a consignment shop. And old cookbooks come in handy.
I refuse to get rid of canning and food preservation items. If there is a way to repurpose or re-use I am all about it. I process and use egg shells for our chickes. Spent coffee grounds ammend soil. After making bone broth I dry chicken or turkey bones to make bone meal for the garden. After making the tea for dandelion, red bud or wild violet jelly I feed the spent petals to our chickens. I still have my ultimate Tightwad gazzette with notes and tabs! Wish I had kept the original newsletters I got starting in 1992!
Cool!🎉
Very smart
I don't declutter anything. Old worn-out holy towels can be used as cleaning rags, and then thrown away; they've lived their lives. I wear things out, use things up. Be careful when shopping, because some things take a long time to wear out or or get used up.
great content, thanks for sharing your items and advice. we've been pressured to think everything we own needs to be updated and replaced , I have my original solid pine hutch/dining room set, I couldn't' find wood of that quality anymore, we refinished it and are so glad we did along with my solid maple chest of drawers from my childhood. Not just spending the money for new items, the research etc that goes into each purchase, can be overwhelming. I miss the privately owned stores , owner would tell you all about the item recommended etc., quality was so much better then as well as customer service.
You are so kind
I agree about solid wood furniture. If I were starting out now, I'd look for old furniture that will last forever. I miss those furniture stores, too. While we were out of town, our son came here for business and stayed at our house. I asked him if he slept in his old bedroom because I got a new topper for the mattress. He said he slept on the sofa in the sunroom. He asked who made it because it's still like new, except for the upholstery pattern. We bought it in 1991. I kept going back and forth about recovering or replacing. I think I know the answer now, lol.
I do not keep cookbooks because I cook the same food with no variety and i'm very contented
RE old desk help: I have used brown stain or brown permanent magic marker to cover places where lament is missing or chipped on furniture (also works on door trim, etc). Not a perfect solution, but it does help the appearance of an old but functional piece of furniture.
Thank you
...permanent magic marker will last much longer (i use permanent marker myself)....sorry for the confusion.
You could also chalk paint it very reasonably or cover it in contact paper if you wanted. I think you are wise to keep it!
I've done the same with permanent marker.
If you sew you could make a seat cover for your office chair and arm rests. It would be removable and washable. You can find fabric for furniture in thrift shops.
I think that decluttering is about getting rid of the things that no longer bring you joy. If it still does, then keep it. ❤
So true!
I gave away all my children clothes bc we've always lived in limited space apartments. But I kept a few pieces for each child as sentimental memories for myself and also for them and their children if they'd like to have them.
You can take a picture for you and give them the item now!
@@pennynickels5216 great idea! Thank you.
@Saturn57 they might just want the pic too, not the item.
I keep old towels to wipe up messes, clean the car and let my cats sleep on. I also keep old quilts and blankets for camping, picnics etc.. I keep dryer lint in big bags to use as a fire starter for campfires. All my old coffee grounds and food peels etc gets ground up and used as fertilizer on my lawn and flower beds. I keep a box of old tired trousers and shirts to wear for dirty outdoor work...weeding, painting etc. Any old item that is past use as is becomes a cleaning cloth. I recently lost weight and got rid of my too big clothes. So now I vow not to get rid of anything that still fits anytime in the near future even if not a favorite . I don't have the budget for a new wardrobe!😮
🎉You KNOW I agree with towels & ?? Stuff
for Emergency 'Go Bags'/Tubs, etc. like the extra manual can opener.
If you can't use it,get rid of it.
Why have items that are just hidden away, gathering dust, taking up space?
If it's special, take a picture of the item, and send it off
Plus, declutter now. Don't let your junk, and stuff, be a burden to your executor when you die. No one wants your stuff when you die. Trust me on this.
If you have the space and you want to keep it, KEEP IT!
❤I don't have the space...so I do ongoing decluttering. Paperwork is my nemesis though...
We just got back home after being gone for 6 weeks. Right now, I'm not willing to get rid of anything, lol. Check with me in a week or two, though. I'll never get rid of my Bibles. I have several that I use depending on what study I'm doing. I still have my first "big girl" Bible. I have several books that I re-read that I'll keep, even though I read most books on my tablet these days. It was so nice to come home and watch your video. Love to all, Linda 💕
Glad you are home
We live out in the country and have 4 inside dogs. Sometimes they need baths. 😂 I use my older towels on them. And use old towels for all kinds of things. I don’t declutter them either. They get used till they are shredded. Lol.
Same, 4 dogs and in the country, can’t have enough towels!
You could paint that file cabinet and the desk to match and put them side by side. When I decluttered my clothes, I had room for my file cabinet to fit into the closet. I have tons of books and every time I put a pile aside to donate, I end up putting them back on the bookshelves. It's a real sickness. I also have a kindle with hundreds of books. Books are my downfall. 🤣
Great idea
I put all our mauals and receipts (plus a copy) in page protectors then put them in binders. So much easier to store and find. When a replacement is bought, just pull out old stuff and add the new. Binders are on a bookshelf always able to access.❤
Fabulous
Great idea!
Great stuff👍🏻. I don’t rid anything but still maintain clutter free. Clean it don’t replace it 🙏
Hi Dawn....I don't really have anything that I need to get rid of...But what I did get back was my Total Gym that I sold to a friend and he didn't want it anymore so we traded it for my pull weight bar that he wanted so there u go...😊😊
That is awesome!
Old medicine should be decluttered,safely.
Many urgent care clinics, pharmacy, hospital, police department, fire department all can safely get rid of any old medicine.
If it's old,it can become toxic
I recently took old allergy pills and was sick for 3 days!
Loved the Tightwad Gazette book. Never read Anne of Green Gables books, but loved the PBS series/version.
Loved the Anne of Green Gables books.
I have both those books
Wonderful furgal things!
I do use expired medicine, even from more than 10 years ago, its melatonin, and it still works, i do keep some old jars, like from jams and jellies, pickles, i use them for when i make my own, i do keep old stuff, never know when it comes in handy.❤😊
Good to know!
Same here
We sold our home in a small town , 2100 sq ft, bought a 700 sq ft park model. Think… a tiny trailer, lol, in a snowbird RV park.
Tons of downsizing, and a different way of life, so kept minimum of everything. We are used to this tiny place now, but still is a challenge, like my pantry! Kept 3 crockpots, a breadmaker from my daughter, Ed makes jam in it! My MN background makes it hard not to keep everything, just in case.
Love your channel, been watching since June, 2019.
Thank you so much
Oh boy! My crockpot is so old, it’s one with groovy mushrooms on it. I like the old ones because they have the glass lids. I keep towels too for defrosting.
Yes, I also think the Tightwad Gazette series are still useful. But to me they are like your vintage cookbooks, we use discernment in applying them to our daily lives. I also wish I have kept my dolls and toys from 60+ years ago!
I think everyone feels that way about their toys!
I totally agree!
You still can get Tightwad Gazette books from thrift books. it's a classic to save even in 2024 useful information. Learned to look around the house first before buying anything and got a sewing machine. I have been using that along with crocheting and learning to knit . Using fewer paper towels, too.
Good to know!
You have a lovely home, it is organized, clean and lived in. Like mine. I would improve the appearance of your desk by painting it, or painting the areas that are exposed. You can also organize your books a little bit better, neater. I kept my Barbies, some of my favorite kids books, and some favorite toys. One of my prized toy is a small wooden horse that Santa Claus handed me 55 years ago, I still remember him reaching for him when I pointed it to him. Priceless memory.
Thanks for the tips!
Im in the process of decluttering. But there are some things l wont .❤
On the news they said some of the NEW purses and wallets that are not leather- have lead in them!! and they said Cherrios has plastic and pesticldes in it. So lets remember that new is not always better.
DEA has Drug take back program throughout the US. Look on line for date and place . If I remember, it is in April and October.
I have some old coastal living magazines from 10-15 years ago. We still hang onto them. It’s fun to glance thru and my 90 year old dad who now lives with us LOVES looking thru them too. If I get rid of them, they are not freeing up room for anything else.
And I don’t get rid of my old tshirts. We live out in the country. I garden, paint, take care of dogs and chickens and need old shirts. I wear them till they fall off. Lol.
And all those things Money Mom that you save, I do too. I have my mom and my grandmas old pots and pans and small appliances and strainers. I love ‘em ! 🥰
That sounds enjoyable
I'm hoping to move and JUST got rid of my old Coastal Living and Cottage Living mags yesterday. Many 📚 📚 went out to the bus stop as well. It was and is painful. 😢 it was the end of the decluttering.
I want to move too, its too expensive, and not sure abt it, but, just de cluttering would help, i think.😊
@user-fn7sr1er2l I am hoping to move in 2 vans lol!. I will have a new matress and sofa delivered to the new place. Books and mags are heavy, though cherished and loved (which is why they were the last thing to go). There are always new ones! Good luck.
I kept my children's Mattel and Fisher price.
Gotta love a good filing cabinet.. Super Useful.. I still use mine .. great video.
Yes! Thank you!
The Tightwad Gazette! It is the best.
I agree
I keep saying I’m going to declutter. I have a lot of things I never use ,that someone else could.
Everyone’s treasures depends upon the individual . I not willing to declutter what I use . Or sentimental items. I just like a place for everything so I don’t have to run around like a headless chicken looking for stuff. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way because we are all different. Nice to know what others think, maybe to get some inspiration. ❤
All owner's manuals are online. Make one bookmark, save each company's manual underneath. Tax info is only good for a few years. Some old medications are OK, just less potent. I don't mind taking old Ibuprofen, as it is too strong for your kidneys, anyway. I agree on vintage kitchen appliances. Everything now is disposable, and it is crazy to get rid of something that works. Cookbooks can be saved on the very cheap app Paprika, just dust collectors or for hoarders. If you don't pick up something every day, probably should give it away. You can read MOST books online, often for FREE via the library and a bunch of other book apps. Refusal to use technology well is a money suck. The only person I know who uses zero technology is my dad. I do recommend keeping old towels and tshirts for bad oops situations. I keep my chairs that are pet torn if they are holding up well, until the pets outgrow tearing up stuff. Then I might get something nicer.
Plastic grocery bags. If you thread the bottom of current one through the handles of then stored one, then as you pull them out of a box, they will come out in the same way tissues come out of a tissue box - pulling the next one out just far enough to be convenient to remove. I saved an 6"x6"x32" mailing box. cut a hole on the 6"x6" side and filled it as described. Regardless of how few there are in it, the loops of a plastic grocery bags are always popped-out and ready to be dispensed. It stands in the corner of the kitchen covered in a black and white floral contact paper.
I did the same thing and it work great!❤
I'd say my old clothes that I really like. They don't fit but I bought them at a time when I had more money and they were bought from quality brands. I do hope to fit into them sometime. I also have two handbags that are really not my style. As I do walk or use public transport I use a backpack to carry things in I don't use them but I haven't been able to buy a new one that is more my style for in case I need it so I'm keeping it.
That makes sense
"Ten X" everything! I've a friend who is a friend of Mr Cardone. The author of the book.
Love that book
I regret getting rid of all of my Barbie items. I had an entire collection that would probably be worth thousands today 🙄🙄. But I did gift some of the items to family and friends and donated a lot so I hope some people are taking care of the stuff now
Same here!
One thing I’m absolutely not willing to declutter is my black out curtains, I can say they make me money because they help me sleep during the day so I can work at night and earn a shift differential. They also help keep in lots of heat during the winter. When I open them up I can feel o most about a 10°-15° difference from the room temp and the space between the curtains and the windows.
I would not declutter pretty much all the things you would not declutter! My desk is kinda like yours, although I do put strips of tape over any little spot that looks like it will soon start peeling- my desk looks a mess LOL. I am so careful with my money at this point that I wont blow it on another desk unless it starts to lean 🤣OHH 1 more thing, I have you beat on the store bags heehee. My closet is FULL of them--- drives my daughter crazy
I love this video ..another great content choice.
Glad you enjoy it!
We don't throw away empty spray bottles, because we use them for spraying plants, or other cleaning products that we do half water and half product. It saves money and it still does the job. Have A Beautiful Sunday Everyone ❤
That's a great idea!
I still use my lovely sewing machine which my parents gave me for my 21st birthday; 50 years ago.
That is awesome!
Hubby still holding on to you because you're useful and functional haha
Always!
Thank you
You're welcome
❤❤❤❤❤❤ GM blessings ☕
Im also holding on to my Tightwad Gazettes! Many 📚 and magazines went out to the bus stop yesterday. I may still have too many books. It's challenging to know what an acceptable number is. 😂😅
What is oldest item you still use (not furniture)? - mine is a little roasting tin from the 1950's that was my aunts.
A few pieces from my parents' wedding china in 60s. White, cool modern style then and still modern today.
My mom still uses cloth diapers for dusting; they are the best, softest. I'm well over 50 now!!
My moms dish towel, she embroderied back in the 60's, which she gave to me as a gift.
My late Mother's butter dish and china vanity set from 1952.
@@Michelle-bw1xg I used new cloth diapers as burp cloths for my babies, then they became dust rags. They are the absolute best dust rags!
Blankets sheets and towels and rags
Brilliant
I have some crockery and Tupperware that belonged to my maternal grandparents. Nothing amazing but they are useful and don’t take up much space, so I have kept them for over 20 years now. Definitely not for decluttering
Thanks for sharing!!
They do work!
Some of my antiques, they are all small and are not all out at the same time but i just cant get rid of any.
I stil l have my Ginny dolls and a bed my mother made for them.
M
I keep old towels too
Never get rid of old towels , they are dog towels and hair dying towels , then they become cleaning towels , finally they go into the shed foe car grease rags .
Ive only found 1 of the books.. would love to run into the others..😊
???
@pennynickels5216 the tightwad gazette books she has in her thumbnail.. I have 1 but am constantly on the lookout for the other 2
My DH!

I had to get a new HP printer. I did not need one. I started getting emails: your printer is almost 4 years old. Last email 'your printer is 4 years old'. Konk. There was nothing wrong with it. And just what do I do with it now? Gotta tackle that tomorrow.
I have an HP printer
I am not a saver .i love change the one thing i love and keep are my doilies i have loved them since i was 18 and first married.
Things you don't need
School books
I don't declutter, just recycle.
If you want to keep something that may not be eye appealing why not repair it or make it look nicer? You can paint or decorate it. I use to have two chairs with arm rests that I couldn’t get clean so I made really nice arm covers for the chairs and it hid the eyesore. You could do a video on makeovers of things you have in your home that you don’t want to discard like your chair and desk but may need a little TLC. I donate old towels and blankets that I can’t use to our local Humane Society. It’s better to donate or have a garage sale then to throw stuff into the landfills.
Good point!
