Hey hey party people! This is the last video I made before the Bell’s palsy hit my face. Please give this video a thumbs up if you want more industry real talk videos!
Most ACCURATE information ever. We don't even have a pencil around the office. All done by illustrator flats ALL DAY!!! Sending designers to inspiration trip = Yes yes yes to other stores to buy something knock off.. "Inspiration" = Online shopping images , "Designers design stuff" = change the some details from the ones you shop to copy so company won't get sued. I am sure not all companies are like this, but most fast fashion brands are exactly like your video says. I always make sure I do something creative at the end of the day to remind myself I am a designer.
I'm an assistant designer for kids, tweens, juniors dresses Everything you said was spot on -Tech packs -FDS forms -emails all day -designing dresses, but communicating which fabric is to be used and how it should flow. Am I using crinoline, horse hair or both? Don't get me started on market week Crazy, but love it 😍
EMAILS ALL DAY! I occasionally meet people who tell me they "kinda" want to be a designer and I immediately say, "Don't bother unless you really want it. You have to love it to make up for the other nutty stuff."
@@zoehongteaches OMG you commented! This gives me the chance to thank you. I didn't become an assistant designer until after I watched you. I only knew a little stuff and didn't have a portfolio. But watching your videos gave me an extra push to do more and be better. Now I'm better with fabrics, adobe illustrator and finally managed to do my portfolio. Even though I love my job, I'm still learning and striving for better. Thanks so much!!!
Hello! Thank you for sharing your story with me! I'm so glad my videos could help you somehow! Your hard work and motivation are so impressive. Good luck with your career!

Just read on Insta about your trip to the ER. So glad you didn't have a stroke. Take good care of yourself and be gentle with your body. Heres a great big hug made from Rainbow arms!!!
Hi Zoe! You are going to recover thank goodness. I pray that it comes sooner for you rather than later:) I love last weeks video and would love to see more trade show videos. Have a great day!!
Could you explain the difference between haute couture designers and regular designers, what haute couture designers do, how they got to the level their at and can you name the ones currently in the world right now? I've tried researching - ain't workin'. Thank you!
Couturiers must be certified by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and follow their rules. They must design made-to-order for private clients, with fittings, make most everything by hand, have an atelier in Paris that employs at least 15 people, showcase a collection 2x a year.
Hi Zoe so glad you are uploaded because I was frustrated on how the Tiana Disney designer Premier series collection doll turned out they made her dress so hideous honestly they could have done it a lot better in my opinion and it just frustrates me so much because she is my favorite Disney princess sorry for the long paragraphs but I just need to get my frustrations out :)
Loved this video so much I watched it twice. I'm an architectural designer and it's interesting the crossover perceptions versus realities of the job. Keep up the great work!
I left the industry in 2000 after 40 years designing couture thru to high street. This is now a different world. I wouldn’t know where to begin, and I wouldn’t want to begin.
Thanks Zoe for keeping it real for us who are figuring things out. This really helps saving time in deciding which path to take in the industry, and I'm so moving to France or Italy to have the whole August off!
What a great explanation in this video. I really wish that I would’ve come across your videos before I went to design school I would’ve had a clearer idea and more experience and knowledge thank you for doing what you’re doing. I really love all your videos.
Yes trade shows. Any trade show. I like going to them to check out the competition and gage why some pieces sell more than others. Also, is good to keep an eye on the marketing and sales team and help them the best you can.
No, sales do not appreciate designers hovering over them while they're working, even if they don't say it to your face. If you want to be helpful, tell them that and leave it in their court and back off. If they are one of the few that really want your help, they will let you know. Checking out the competition is always a good idea.
totally agree that designers should not go to trade shows!! i work for a company that forces designers to go to trade shows :( it is such a waste of time for me. love your videos!!

Hi there, I do not work as a fashion designer but as a mere graphic artist for a sportswear company, it is fascinating how similar our fields are but they're still completely different things. While I may work in an off branch of fashion that's more focused in sportswear, I can also agree and see what you're talking about when it comes to producing clothes. And the trading off of emails back and forth are exactly as you said are constant(especially with sales reps and excels). The clear communication, the software, and the duties of a fashion designer are all familiar with what I already work with. @10:29 when you talked about specific jobs, I can see where that applies to the different process at my workplace. For example, I use Ai and have customers wanting arts from templates we already have and my job entails to keep revising the art until the customer is happy with what they're presented. But then brings me to question, I did not originally graduate with a fashion degree of any sort, but is it possible for me to work in fashion design if I had interest in it because I have previous experience in working a similar field?
Yes, there's a big overlap in skills. As you develop a portfolio for fashion, you can focus on your abilities in drawing flats in Illustrator, developing art for logos, graphics, embellishments for garments, Photoshop skills to collage mood boards. You can do your entire portfolio digitally if you don't draw by hand. But you definitely need a fashion portfolio for jobhunting.
Hi is there a job in fashion that is kinda mix between being a visual merchandisers and a fashion designer. Like i would love to design and make clothes and design the layout of the store to display them. Aswell as decorating the store and designing how the whole shop looks.
Such an informative video, thank you. İf it's not disrespectful, can i ask about the money side of it? Do you make a good living? Comfortable would be the better term. İ do want to be a designer but that side of it is sooo unclear.
Entry level designers don't make high salaries. Actual numbers depends on size of compnay and where the company is located. Tech designers make more, generally. Pattern makers make the most, as they are the engineers of the fashion industry. You can make a comfortable living if you do well and get promoted etc etc. but entry level, compared to other industries, isn't great.
I was wondering if you have any knowledge on fashion historians and costume designers that you could share. For example the jobs that are attributed to them and schooling required. I have been having a hard time finding information on these careers (a lot of places online just say that you need to have good connections to become a costume designer). Thank you for your time. I hope you get better soon.
No, unfortunately I have no knowledge of that arena. My advice is to look up job listings for your ideal jobs and look at the requirements listed for those jobs and work on those requirements.
I’m disagree in few things. Specially when a designers are by their own. They do need to do things that you state we shouldn’t do. Not all the designers can work in companies and have the resources to open a company or boutique having already a full personnel that made things easy. Some, I should said a lot of us struggling in this industry before we can afford to pay to a seamstress to help us sewn. I am saying this because a lot of new designers get disappointed and discouraged because the school nowadays only prepared you for the pretty and not for the ugly and hard that this profession could be. Other than that I love your videos!
I'm 16 and my family is really poor, I have never worked with fabric, I am good at art, and I draw clothes for fun, but I want to be a designer, but my parents say I'll never make it, I dont know what classes, in highschool I need, or what I should know before I apply to schools, how much money do designers get.
