    Canon did me a favour by banning third-party RF lenses. They made it easy for me to choose to buy a Sony instead. If there are no third-party lenses Canon can charge whatever they like for their own lenses.

      Only Canon would shoot themselves in the foot like this. Couple of years on non selling lenses and they will change. They are always forced to change. The problem is that they are usually 3 plus years before they do so. They continually come to the point of going out of business. The cinema division was a doozy. I will say that they always pull it off. The avoid going out of business better than any company on earth.

      Same for me. I was choosing between R6 and A7 iv. I'm glad that I bought Sony even before Canon banned 3rd party lenses.

    Rf mount is the only one where I can have a drop in filter with EF lens ND & POL... THAT WAS my decision making paradigm shift. I use both Sony and Canon and so far the RF lens are superior quality for my business. After owning the A1 and the R3, R3 was far superior as a camera for video and photos in low light fast action. I do not care to use 3rd party as personal experience they do not perform well over time and are much less rugged for my use. RF is where my money will go. Besides with a 99 dollar adapter i have more lens selection than Sony or Nikon; and it works better than on the native EF mount.

    Back in 2018, I was deciding between Canon m50 and Sony a6400, the 4k30p offered at an entry level APS-C mirrorless on the a6400 convinced me. Afterwards, I realized I escaped a bullet as EF-M mount won't be supported long-term, and adapting EF-S is just not a real long term solution. Then Canon came out with the R5/R6, I was really tempted, but given the huge un-editable video file sizes, the lack of wallet friendly pro-level 3rd party lenses, and overheating concern, I stayed put, and finally picked up a7iv in December 2021. Since then, Canon banned 3rd party lenses on RF mount, and it's a clear answer I can't go with Canon's RF. Sony a7iv fixed the color (skintones now look very natural and appealing), menu problems, and then some, with a great photo/video switch, and in-camera streaming capabilities while WFH is common. I've grown to love my a7iv even more than my a6600. Price (lenses included), weight/size, usable features, video capabilities, lens choices, Sony is just the all around best option.

    In 2020 I switched from Canon to Sony and Im very happy that I did. The menu system was something I had to adjust to, but just like anything else, after using it for a while , I adapted. I love the Sony Alpha line and Ive had great experiences with the Sigma and Tamron emount lenses as well. Id love to see a video about buying used equipment.

    Hi Susie... I love your videos and your thinking on cameras in general. I was very close to buying a Canon R7 with the native 100-400mm lens. I am looking for something for landscape/traveling with a zoom capability. After watching this video, I'm back to undecided. Which Sony camera/lens combo would you suggest to rival the R7 combo for photos and video for around the price point? Thank you very much.

    I used to be a Canon 5D MarkII guy and get the eyelash in focus with the eye out of focus many times. I always had to shoot backup. When the eye focus tech came out I could not believe it. I went to the Mark III and begged Canon R&D to bring out eye focus. They told me that I was preaching to the qurie. Finally moved to the A7III. I shot an entire football team headshots. ALL in tack sharp focus. Never again will I go a back to the Canon Cripple hammer alliance. Th A7IV is everything that the A7III was and then some. LOVE your videos.

    I LOVE Canon cameras. I also love their Canon R6 but I don't like the lens choices. I do not want a monster RF50L f1.2 that costs $3000 CAD! I have used my EF L lenses nicely on my R6 and last fall I dabbled with a Sony A7iii and adapting some EF lenses to a Sony. And I liked the result. Its almost spring, I have decided to take the plunge and buy a A7IV brand new and go from there. Will I always be a Sony user? Nah but for the next 5 years probably. I just hate how far behind the lens selection is for Canon RF bodies.

    Agreed ! I bought an a6000 about 8 or 9 years ago, loved it so went full frame with the a7II, then an a7RII, finally an a7III. However my other half, was used to using Canon, so my old 5DIII & 7D had to stay. One day we went out to do a dog photoshoot. As the dog was running around, my constant auto focus got, I'd say, 95% of the shots in focus, whereas the canon failed miserably at about 10% ! So I insisted she took my a7III out for a walk, and try it, along with our daughter and her dog. She came home, loaded the photo's onto the iMac, spent an hour looking at them, then told me I need a new camera, as she had requisitioned my a7III for herself. Finally I sold all my Canon gear and bought her an a7III. Best move ever !

You’ve kinda hit it on the head, it’s all about the glass glass glass - unfortunately for the unforeseeable future we don’t know when CANON will allow 3rd party vendors to make lenses. Have you used sigma or third-party lenses? Would you say these third-party options are reliable?. Your comment about the EOS R not having a joystick clicked in my head. I was wondering why I have a difficult time switching between my R6 and R when shooting with two bodies lol. It still works great as a second body but it really messes with my head.
    i was thinking of sellilng my R and getting a matching R6 but I have been looking at the new Fuji cameras too, something about having smaller bodies/lenses and nice jpgs really appeals to me at this point.
    Also, I wish I kept my 6D2. I kind of miss shooting a DSLR sometimes. DSLRs will be the 'film cameras' of this generation.

      This is a good point about those looking for a photography camera vs video camera. Another reason I like Sonys is because they are such great hybrid cameras that do photo and video well. But if you don't care for video, it makes for a less compelling reason to switch IMO.

    I think reason #1 is not a reason at all, in my humble opinion. Apple has dominated the US market by adding features that already existed years before. The same for computers, etc. etc. I think you're also missing an important reason. The feel in hand, and I have played with numerous Sonys, they aren't comfortable to hold. They're quite boxy. Their UI is also quite terrible, but to be fair, every camera UI is terrible. Seriously, they need to hire people from Google or Apple ASAP. And Canon did arrive late, but they have a much, much larger library of EF lenses that can be adapted. So the jump from EF to RF gear doesn't need to be immediate and sell off everything. From what I have seen and heard, all EF lenses work the same or even better (due to R lineup AF) than on DSLRs. Hopefully they will open up the RF mount to Sigma, Tamron, etc.
    In the end, it really is a personal choice. I won't be switching to Sony. I switched from DSLR Canon to the RP then to the R5 for the RF lineup, they're small, compact, and I have access to all of the EF lineup (which I still have a few). Regardless, enjoy your gear! The most important thing is that it does what you want it to do and you enjoy shooting with it. It's a tool. I can't imagine someone judging you for a differently branded hammer, keyboard or toothbrush. So why judge people by their camera? Judge them by their photos, if anything xD.

      I agree that Sony cameras aren't the most pretty, especially compared to Fujifilms. And I do miss Canon colors A LOT. But overall, I've come to love shooting Sony, especially that A7IV that has better menus and colors. But at the end if the day, I agree that brands or even what you shoot on doesn't matter as long as it works for you 💯

      If you can, try to rent a Sony camera and give it a try. It takes some time to get used to, but you'll definitely have more lens options.

    Still, Sony isn't perfect either. They have a bad update policy, and bad displays (the one in the 7300€ A1 is worse than the one in the 4000€ R5) and between the A7 IV and the R6 II the R6 II is faster. These would be reasons for me to switch to canon. Still, I'm not sure, yet. Just because Sony was early in the market doesn't mean they still have the best gear. However, Canon's policy about third party lenses is terrible as well.

  • @paullanoue5228

    I hope you got a good lawyer. Sony has to be sued to get your camera fixed. The A7 III had defective shutters and Sony claimed nothing was wrong. This brought about a class action suit. The case was settled after a year long dispute. That’s a long to wait for a camera repair.

    I'm still holding on to my old Canon EF-M gear. I realize there will never be any new bodies or lenses, so will need to buy all new gear. I am still sour on Canon, so considering Sony, Nikon and Panasonic full-frame. Each brand has positives and negative. I have not committed to any of them yet. If Panasonic would just get Sony autofocus...

      100% agree about Panasonic. I've heard such good things about them, except for their autofocus 😝

  • @yohannsphotographyvideogra9542

    yes its worth it to switch to Sony cause they keep popping cameras like babies and they are way more advanced on mirrorless by at least 5 year ahead on technologies of digital market and they control the sensor market for all other manufacturers even tough their service customer service sucks and firmware updates are flimsy .

      Depends on your field/colleagues. I mostly shoot events and it's been a slow industry to migrate to mirrorless (at least here in Seattle), but I'm seeing more people switch to mirrorless over the last 2 years in particular.

    It s always an error to change brand. You get used to handling , lens colors and ments. You were hypnotized by sirens of Sony technology and stupid UA-camrs. It s quite stupid. Eos R are as good as Sony as Nikon now.

    • @Gemini_Connect
      @Gemini_Connect  2 роки тому +2

      Actually it was my professional photography colleagues that I work with who switched first and convinced me Sony was better for shooting events. Canon has caught up to Sony in terms of camera body technology, but their limited selection of RF lenses is where Sony excels.

      @@Gemini_Connect Well you are professionnal so changing all gear is not an issue for you (you can amortized the price on your revenues). I was more speaking for amators where the price of gear is important and now all brands are more or less at same level. Yes Sony is good (and expensive , mainly the lenses) but is it so good that it will transform all your images ? I don t think so. When you see the importance of post processing on good images, better to buy less expensive stuff and work on your images and pass time in post prod. The camera impacts less the images than in the past. But if you have money and want to increase Sony revenues you are welcome :). But again I speak for amators , for pro it can be different.

    • @simonhooper2458
      @simonhooper2458 2 роки тому

      Actually Sony is the better option for amateurs as it offers more quality options at a better price point thanks to 3rd party and ef adapted lenses.
      I am not a specific fan of any brand in particular personally but have been pointing new or converting shooters to Sony.
      Also software is improving at such a fast rate that the colour science is even less of an issue between brands

    • @philmtx3fr
      @philmtx3fr 2 роки тому

      @@simonhooper2458 Yes 3rd party lenses changes a little the game but their cameras are still expensive… the A7iv should have been sold at the A7iii price. If you are used to Nikon or Canon better to stay on them knowing that their last classic lenses series (F for Nikon and EF for Canon) with an adapter can be mounted on their new hybrids cameras. I bough an second hand Z7 at half of the price of the new A7iv and I am perfectly happy with it. The Sony is probably superior in some fields (autofocus, dynamic range, high iso) on the paper …but who sees that on the final pictures… nobody :). For amators a camera more expensive than 1500$ is good value for the brand , not for the photograph :).

    • @simonhooper2458
      @simonhooper2458 2 роки тому

      @@philmtx3fr actually I disagree in regards to dynamic range. We have both Sony and canon here at home and use both, the Sony is much easier to work with both in the field and post due to its extended dynamic range, it handles highlights much better and retrieves more usable information out of the dark areas. So we personally have noticed the advantages of extra dynamic range. This is also useful for things like bird photography where using a $20000 prime isn’t a viable option but using a 3rd party zoom is.
      As for the body cost, I agree the Sony is pricey, however as soon as you purchase one Sigma or Tamron lens over the factory equivalent you have made that back.
      The real issue is that Sony profits off bodies and Canon off glass. Sony has the advantage here in the long term from a straight business perspective, make your profit up front and lens profits are the bonus. Canon will eventually need to be able to compete with this business model unless they want to only be selling to mostly professionals otherwise this could well be the beginning of their very own Kodak moment, which I personally do not want to see as competition is always better for the consumer.
      Sony is a tech company that has targeted the “prosumer” which is smart, amateurs that are happy to buy pro quality equipment with options. This is most likely the best strategy to survive in a shrinking market.
      Realistically the main reason Canon are still where they are is because they are so huge and have been able to financially survive the blows others have struggled with. That can’t go on forever though and it will be a sad day if Canon truly suffer in the future due to the inability to adapt to the changing market quickly enough against their competitor/s.
      We use both native, 3rd party native and adapted ef lenses on both bodies and all have their good and bad points. Adapted ef on wide lenses is great as it means you can use adapters with boosters for Astro and built in nd filters etc behind the lens and the one filter adapter works on all ef lenses regardless of size.
      😉
