    Interesting video. I've tried Sony and stuck with Canon and am quite happy with the R5 (firmware 1.6 eliminated most overheating issues). Perhaps if I was just starting out, I would go Sony, but justifying the time, effort and financial write down to sell an inventory of high quality Canon EF L lenses in order to switch brands is pretty hard to justify in this day and time. The capability of modern cameras by Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc. are all pretty good these days and they tend to leap frog each other as technology marches onward. In my view, of you don't own a lot of lenses or if money, time and effort don't matter to you, then it is fine to change brands constantly. Anyway, nice video of your reasoning.

    I'm half way through your vid. I agree with your frustrations regarding Canon, but I've also had frustrations with Sony. I've gone down this rabbit hole myself A TON. When the R5 and A7S III came out... I got both (absurd, I know) which actually turned out to be a useful and interesting investment.
    For those that don't know, you can get indefinite record times out of the Canon R5 if you record externally (e.g. Ninja Atomos or OBS). I believe you can record 8K externally. I've used my R5 for 12+ hours live streams in full frame 4K60 and have shot for hours at a time in 4K FINE recording to OBS.
    What causes overheating when recording internally is 8K and 4K FINE mode, which downsamples from the entire 8K sensor. People think their only choice is to then use 4K line skip to get around overheating... but this is only the case if you hate crop mode. Crop mode has no line skipping and actually yields a beautiful image. And you get most of that crop loss back with a speed booster. What this means is you can record internally without ANY overheating on the R5 in nearly full frame (visually) if you are comfortable with crop mode.
    Regarding Sony... it honestly took me a long time to appreciate my camera. Now I use it regularly. My biggest frustration with it is the inability to fully customize the wheels and dials to my liking so upon startup, it's already set (which oddly enough, the A74 gives you). Everytime I fire up the camera, I have to hit the custom dials button to activate my preferences. I've also seen my A7S III overheat multiple times when recording to both cards in a warm room.
    Update... At 18 min now. A74 is a fantastic camera. Haven't noticed the rolling shutter issue yet, the LCD is a nicer looking than the A7S III and I love that you can turn it on and the custom dials are already set without having to push a "custom dials mode" button. I agree with your thought process in deciding to purchase the A74. That being said, I've seen UA-camrs challenge pro photographers about comparison images between the Sony A1 and Sony A7S III and often times, the A7S III won or they couldn't see a difference. And the limitations of Sony touchscreens bug me to no end.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому +1

      Getting both is definitely the best way to find what's best. I did rent a few different bodies before purchasing, and that helped A TON.
      Thanks for adding this perspective, it's incredibly helpful. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't had frustrations with custom buttons and dials so far on any of the models. I spent an inordinate amount of time setting everything up when I got the cameras, but since then they keep the custom settings stored right away, which has been really nice.

    • @CineDesi
      @CineDesi 2 роки тому

      @@tombuck the specific arrangement I like is the rear wheel to be aperture, top rear dial to be ISO and the front dial to be shutter speed. I can only seem to activate this specific preference once the a7s III is on and I hit my “custom dials” button which is assigned to the trash icon. On the a7 IV, there is no limitation with how you customize the dials and they even let you customize what has traditionally been the exposure dial. I vainly hope Sony will update the Sony a7s III to give users the same flexibility as the a7 IV. But I doubt it will happen.

    So I made the exact switch you did and even did it over a long period of time. Honestly, the biggest thing for me was I started to get frustrated with the Canon autofocus because I was getting used to Sony. I never thought I'd say that, but it seems like Canon's AF hasn't really improved in the last few years. I was literally blown away by Sony's AF. Plus the lowlight and dynamic range were unmatched. I use FX3 + A74 setup and I love it.

    If that A7iv had come out before I bought the R5, I would have switched to sony... it just came out a few months too late. I also think that Canon is cumulatively WAY WAY WAY WAAAAy more expensive in every way, bodies and lenses AND computer needs to edit video and photo files (yup, even the photo files are super slow to edit if you don't have a frickin M1). I really think canon might be for rich people LOL

      The RF lenses are wildly expensive (although they are outstanding). I used to think Sony was more expensive, and maybe that was true at one point, but right now everything seems to be pretty fairly priced and there are decent options at every budget.

      Canon trying to be the Leica for Mirrorless pro system. Look at how they treat new photographers or amateur or beginning photographers. They could care less about having lower priced lenses. Pretty much most of their lenses are 1k to 3k lenses. They spit on the lower end users because they believe photography will become niche just like how Leica is for the niche photographers as people begin getting used to cell phone photography.

But when canon released the r6 i decided to stay because i love the all in one package combinend with this super low noise sensor. But i can agree from a production perspective Sony might be the better choice because of no overheating, and special models for special needs. Totally understand the Canon gripes... I have every one of them and then some myself. You hit the nail on the head when you said, "I got tired of purchasing artificial limitations with Canon". That is exactly what that brand has become even with a lot of their cinema and professional lineups.

      My Sony cams have been great- so much so that I've kind of lost interest in even thinking about getting new cameras, which has never happened before 🤯
      My biggest gripe after using them for 2.5 years now is that there are virtually no firmware updates for the most part and the product lineup has gotten really messy, with so many different camera models that have EXTREMELY similar features with one or two huge differences. Just takes a bit more research to find what's best, but they work incredibly well.

    I had a cropped sensor Canon for years and decided to make the full frame jump with the Sony A7IV. I'm not a professional or anything but I wanted a better camera for travel and family pictures. Canon's lenses are WAY more expensive and once I saw Sony's third party support for lenses, I had to switch. I thought about buying the A1 but like I said, I'm not a professional and decided to get the A7IV with some quality lenses instead (Sony 35mm G Master, Sigma 85mm 1.4, Sigma 24-70 2.8). I mainly shoot pictures but I might get a secondary video camera. Not sure if I should get the A7SIII or the FX3.

    I love the conclusion of you can't buy a bad camera nowadays. Can you believe how much that statement didn't ring true before 2014? I imagine back then that hesitancy was simply due to the lack of options and legacy, but now skepticism and paradox of choice is what makes all of us consumers mad with GAS. In todays time, new camera releases are equal parts enthralling and enraging. The OM-1 got announced a couple of days ago, which lead me to spend an hour making up quotes to figure out how much it'll cost me to make a system switch, then I spent the following hour telling myself to go and take a hike. At the end of the day, all I care about is shooting and having a good time, and I can still have that with what I have, surprisingly.
    Sometimes, I think, "What are todays version of the T2i and T3i? What about the 60D or 7D?" Which is interesting not only in terms of having a standard set by old cameras to fall back on, but how it was Canon that set that standard for me. It's a shame that the RF system took a while to gain its footing, especially since its still receiving some backlash with its newer releases. I'm hopeful for them though, the release of the affordable 16mm and 100-400mm is a compelling factor that keeps me with a watchful eye. In general, I'm particularly interested in the future of the camera market, and specifically how characteristics of "affordability" and "mid-range" seems to be visibly evolving. This was a great video to stir up some conversation.

      I also remember how much awesome work you did with a T3i (which is also why I got my 60D...because you made the flippy screen look so useful).
      Canon was on top for so long with some really great cameras, but I think they got comfortable while other systems got aggressive. I also just like obsessing over cameras, so that's why I try and be super clear about splitting hairs and saying that all cameras are awesome now 😁

Canon lenses are fine if you spend the money for L glass but as a hobbyist photographer buying Lots of L glass was out of the question. Sony, on the other hand, makes some fabulous mid priced, and even lower priced, lenses that surpass the Canon mid priced lenses. And then there is the size. Canon stuff just seems overly huge compared to Sony. A Canon camera and two or three L lenses required the purchase of a Tenba backpack whereas I can fit the same Sony equivalent in a Peak Design mid-sized everyday sling bag.

Do you experience poor video quality from it on some specific camera, because on my R5 it supplies no-limit recording in very good quality.

    • @tombuck

      The video quality is no different than any other HDMI, it's more about the reliability of it, especially on gear that's aimed towards video production. The thing with battery life is that you can shoot 8 bit 420 4k video forever on the A7 iii and A7R iii. But now all the latest Sony cameras shoot 10 bit 422 which consumes more power + oversampling for the A7IV. I've noticed my battery is the worst for A7IV, a little bit better on A7Siii and much longer on older A7iii & A7Riii. • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому +1

      It’s really not an issue in the newer models. The a7S3 has never overheated in me and the FX3 has a built in fan. Some people have reported heat issues with the a7IV, but those can be solved by opening the screen (I haven’t had any issues yet).
      Ironically it’s the Canon R5 and R6 that are somewhat notorious for overheating. They’ve gotten better with some firmware updates, but it’s still an issue and definitely something that kept me from buying them for myself.
      Early Sony mirrorless cameras had a ton of issues, but I think they spent a good 7-8 years ironing them out so now they’re pretty solid and reliable. Canon was late to the mirrorless market and it seems like they’re now experiencing the growing pains that Sony (and others) went through.

    I had about $1,300 to spend on a new camera at the end of 2021, and literally after months and months of research, I bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max as my main camera and couldn’t be happier. I know it’s the absolute least camera geek choice, but for me who films in multiple situations from a controlled studio, to outdoor car spotting, and also skateboarding, the iPhone just checked so many boxes in terms of quality, easy of use, and compatibility with my Mac and FCPX. and since I have an iPhone 12 already as a phone, boom, I suddenly have 2 cameras that are usable if needed.
    Hopefully some of the major brands can make a mirrorless that has some serious computational elements, wifi and a seem-less app/interface for about $1000 all-in lens included and maybe even some internal memory. If not I feel like more and more young creators will just get iPhones. Especially since they’re getting better and better every year. And you can usually finance them very easily these days. I have had several Sonys (really hoping it would be a great system), and although the Sony autofocus is one of the best, the images are super sharp almsot to a "to digital looking point" to my eye, and the A1 is one of the most customizable cameras on the market, they lack one of the most important things about photography...... color; It is lacking. The R is a starter mirrorless like the M series or the old Nikon J series or the early Sony As.. You should have bought the R5 or even the R6 - both are two of the most amazing cameras I have used. At some point in the future, Sony may be a great system if the find where their color is, but as of now..... no way - and again. I have owned 5 Sony's, rented a couple of others and no thank you. And Nikon even with the Z9 is just too far behind with the tech and that is why I switched to Canon. I did in fact, use a Sony for ONE wedding ...... ONCE. . Good luck and welcome to the world of Sony hype. I wish I was the only one that was of the mind that Sony has no color but I am not. I just happened to find that for myself editing photos and relizing that I was pushing my saturation and vibrance past where it should be to give the photos life. And although I do on occasion upsize 1080 for one or two clips to 4K, it is not the same - it just is not. One other thing about record limit - it has to do with import fees and being sold as a stills camera or video camera. Differnt tax rates.

      You've definitely got to go with what works for you! Canon has earned a reputation for great color for a reason. I really considered the R5/R6 (preordered the R5 when it was announced), but they're ultimately just not right for me. I've heard the "overly digital" comment on Sony's image quality before, but for whatever reason, I like it. I guess it all comes down to personal taste/preference 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I used several older Sony models in the past and I really didn't enjoy them nearly as much as the newer generation of cameras.

    for studio setups i would go Panasonic box cameras because they have PoE (power over ethernet) basically meaning you have 1 wire going to the camera and you can monitor and configure the cameras from a PC, also they are doing a lot for streaming over IP so you don't need capture cards or video mixers plus they can record in the camera and they are very tiny. but i liked your video just saying this so you can go down a rabbit hole and learn new things if you didn't know. For me for fixed camera setups having easy power, data and monitoring is a thing i value a lot, like you said in the beginning to each their own. I also prefer sony over canon and think for video they are currently really amazing with the readout speeds of their sensors.

      That's really awesome, I haven't heard of PoE before. 👍

    I had shot Nikon for decades. The Nikon Z6 was a massive disappointment and when Sony announced the A7Siii and I saw how quickly it became popular, based on that and my extensive experience with Sony Handycams I have converted to Sony. The Z6 was such a lemon; 30-minute time limit, no charging from USB when the camera is on, mini-HDMI, and the list goes on! Goodbye Nikon! Hello my new best friend the Sony line of mirrorless cameras. I LOVE the A7Siii!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому +1

      The a7SIII really is spectacular. I think both Canon and Nikon have some really cool cameras now, but they were just so slow to not just embrace mirrorless, but to really try and do it well.

    Very cool bro. The Sony 7sIII wasn’t available at the time I was ready to upgrade from my canon 6dMII, so I ended up getting a Sony A7C. I’m still in that learning curve and cannot decide yet if I like it (maybe cause I don’t have a conversion file so I manually grade my log footage and it’s hard to get the colors right). So I’m interested in your opinion on that Sony camera… have you used it?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't used the a7C myself, but from what I understand it's basically the a7III in an upgraded body. I know lots of people LOVE the a7III and get incredible results with it, but it's also running the older sensor/specs/menus compared to the newer cameras. Sony never "clicked" with me until the a7SIII, and I think there are a lot of different things combined within that camera that helped to make it something I love using.
      But I also know lots of people who use the a7SIII as their main camera and the a7C as their B camera and get great results 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@tombuck interesting 🧐 thanks for taking the time. Do you shoot in raw? If saw, do you get a conversion file directly from Sony? I did but my footage looked awful when I apply it to it

    still getting the hang of the Sony a6400 not a full size sensor but I feel like I need a full frame and luv Sony not switching at the moment just thinking of upgrading and only do video got a gimbal and Mavic Pro 2 drone and love film but should I switch to full frame even fits only video that I do???

      Full frame is totally a matter of personal reference, but I LOVE it for the image quality, depth of field, wider field of view, and better low light performance.

    I was a Canon guy for a decade. The EOS R is still one of my most favorite cameras ever. But when I wanted to go to 4k shooting, my options were an overheating ES R5 or EOS R6. Got the R6, it was insanely blue and couldnt shoot 4k for more than 20mins. That was it. Sold all 3 Canons and 7 lenses the next day. I was mad and it felt like I was being laughed at by Canon.
