Dude , I have been playing DnD since i was 16, 1st edition. I am 58 now, and THAT was the most detailed and clear explanation i have ever heard. Excellent job my friend.
I first played DnD when I was 12, 1st edition. My friend's older brother came over almost every day during summer vacation from school and we played it practically nonstop. Good memories.
Fellow "Old Gamer" here! I'm 55 and played D&D in Jr. High. I remember all the excitement when Advanced D&D came out! I'm looking forward to enjoying this game. Though in early access I keep getting my butt kicked!
And Larian made the excellent decision to call the difficulty modes explorer, balanced and tactician to avoid players feeling judged for not wanting difficult combat. If you want the focus on the story and explore the world rather than challenging combat, that's an entirely legit way to play.
@@leandervr I play Divinity on Just the Story. And I don’t feel ashamed at all. It’s so fun laying in bed and just getting to experience a great game on my Steam Deck without the fear of struggling combat wise.
You people who play on the easiest difficulty and enjoy it are lucky af,or maybe I'm just unlucky af. Whenever I play on easy, my egoistical ahh brain guilts me into thinking that I didn't actually beat the game.
As someone who’s never played this type of game before, I was complete lost when first starting it. After watching this video I can confidently say that I am still lost. I do, however, understand it a little better, so I’m about to start the game over and give it a whirl! Appreciate the video!
It doesnt matter how many decades I have been playing D&D, why is it always so fun just watching videos like this, going over the basics? Every now and again I have this moment of 'how did I forget that?'
“You deserve to enjoy the game you paid for. It’s not that big of deal.” More UA-camrs need to say this. You don't HAVE TO play on the hardest difficulty to enjoy a game and you certainly don't have to feel like you need to prove something to yourself or other people. It's pixels on a screen, you'll be fine if you play on easy lmfao.
I can't explain how good this video is for someone who only ever played DoS 2 (and fell in love with it). It's a grand canyon in quality between this video and other videos on the same subject!
one tip i would suggest for spell casters or other range is to use your movement. For example, cast a spell or fire an arrow then move out of line of sight. The enemy will have to move to get to you. and that triggers an attack of opportunity from your melee.
I wasn't even interested in CRPGs or DnD that much before knowing your channel, and now Baldur's Gate 3 seems like the game release of the year to me! Thank you for your work and your honesty when making these videos, your passion is truly contagious 😊
You are killing it lately with these videos. The class videos have been really good and informative, esp the class fantasies part. I cannot wait to play the game and what you have planned for. This channel needs for subs!
THIS. this is the most comprehensive and perfect combat guide for all people new to BG or D&D 5e edition. Thank you this guide has been really helpful in bridging my understanding at areas such as Abilities, Skills, Proficiencies in particular, which has been quite a headscratcher as i navigate through the first 20+ hours of the game while still trying to enjoy and explore the game on my own unassisted.
since it still follows the 6 sec per turn rule but extended based on gameplay speed, it would be fun to have a realtime replay for instances or scenarios that would be fun to rewatch.
As someone who joined the channel shortly after the big Wotr boom I have to say it's fun to see you cover a single game extensively and seem excited for it. Keep it up man
“And you deserve to enjoy that thing you paid for.” What a fantastic sentiment that is so counter to the whole “git gud” crap you see so often online. Great video man. Keep it up.
I only ever played games like this on videogames, as I have no friends who like tabletop gaming with this complex rulesets. And even though I played the BG series, DoS and others, this was the most detailed and relaxed explanation I ever viewed. Thanks, even after playing a lot of these kind of games, I was able to learn something from it.
I really admire people who can express themselves the way you do in terms of explaining everything so thoroughly and in a way most of us can relate and understand! I applaud 👏 you sir!
i have never played dnd and honestly the information is so overwhelming, even with this video i have to watch it in bits and pieces. thank you so much for your hard work!
I have a pretty fair grasp on dnd from watching Critical Role and this was a fantastic explanation of the combat, really easy to understand. Man this has felt like the longest week ever. Lets just skip ahead 4 days so we can play this game already 😂
@@davidparkes7741 hey critter. I'll be playing as either a Tiefling or Drow Necromancer Wizard. Absolutely love necromancers in any rpg I play so its an easy choice. No idea if I'll multiclass yet.
Great explanation. One thing to note, 5e removed surprise "rounds". It's a condition, where characters who have the condition basically do not get to do anything. This means some of the characters might be surprised while others are not
Thanks for the info! Im a complete DnD noob and bought Baldurs gate because of the passion the developers shown towards bringing gamers an innovative new game! I really hope it grips me like so many other table top lovers. I am intimidated currently tho
Thanks a ton for this information video! No matter how skilled you are, one should always go back and review the basics of adventure in the Forgotten Realms!
I can actually thank you for the guide not from this video but from Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous videos I watched months ago. Due to my discalculia(deslexia but with numbers) I avoid numbers like 1d6+2 was like "OH GOD NOT ALGEBRA AGAIN!" so your videos from Pathfinder helped a lot in convincing me to try BG3. I think 1d6+2 means I roll one 6 sides dice with a additional 2 in my bonus or something. Still don't fully understand tbh, but at least I know part of the games combat mechanics
1d6+2 is exactly that. So a roll like that will be anywhere from 3 to 8. The game will tell you the range for damage as 3 to 8 in the UI, but if you want to dig into how they get there, the combat log will break it down.
Fair and a relatively new concept. The play test for D&D next edition (it's complicated) includes weapon specific abilities. Turns out they wanted to make weapon choice more impactful, flavorful, and interesting than a slightly different damage dice. Glad to see Larian making martials interesting, too!
I think a video like this might tip the scale towards picking the game up. I stopped playing D&D at 3.5, and shifted to Pathfinder. So while I have a vague understanding of things like advantage or stat saves, there's some stuff I don't know. And I wondered if not knowing the system would be more trouble than it's worth.
I have put 6 hours into this game on ps5. I love it so much. I have been playing D&D alot back when 3rd and 3.5 edition was out. I did buy the core rule books for 4th edition but I couldn't find a group and I never played 5th edition
Such an amazing game, I am definitely loving it. Like in any RPG, u must learn the game, don’t give up, its so worth it, excellent tutorial, keep em coming!!!
The reason 5e is so good is because it has evolved since its creation in 1974. They have gone from very complicated system (2e) to a munchkin system where the goal is to have as high attack roll as possible (3 and 3.5) and then they tried to fix that with 4e that no-one plays. And they landed on 5e which is kind of a compromise (imo) between 2e and 3.5 plus some cool features.
I am brand new to this type of game. I played Witcher 3 and it completely blew my mind, so I figured I’d try BG3. So far, I am simply dumbfounded at the quality and detail in it, like how every single npc has multiple dedicated speaking lines. It almost feels like literally every moving character has a role. Anyway, the combat has been extremely challenging for me, but something you said made me feel so much better. “You deserve to enjoy the game you paid for” Thank you for that man, I was hesitant to look up any hints thinking that I would be quitting or cheating. You made me realize how stupid that is. 😂
A good primer, but it might have been useful to also talk about the "Kharmic dice" setting which is on by default or else someone learning just what you said here may be confused as to how certain rolls are possible.
Thank you for this video! I just finished playing DOS 1&2 which I both found very approachable but it's been a struggle in BG3 trying to translate all these D&D words into something that makes sense to me. Like just the description of the Daze status condition: Has "Disadvantage" on "Wisdom Saving Throws", can't take "reactions" and "loses the dexterity bonus to their Armour Class". Removed if an ally "Helps" this creature. It was extremely demotivating just hovering over one of my starting abilities and being met with some absolute laundry list of terminology that meant nothing to me. Some of these you can't even hover over to get more information like Reactions or Helps
Awesome explanation! I’ve never played tabletop or CRPGs before and your guides have been incredibly helpful in getting to understand the basics! It’s one of those video game genres that has always interested me (mostly due to the role playing fantasy of it) but I never actually attempted to play them, mostly because every time I researched a bit I only heard horror stories about how “unfriendly to new players” X or Y games where, but BG3 seems like the perfect place to start. Also super nice that you don’t actually tell us what to do but mostly just give advice. So many guides for these games claim to be for new players and all they do is restrict your playstyle essentially telling you that you either do what they say or you’ll fuck up/you’re playing wrong. And quite honestly I think there’s fun to be had messing up and learning or simply playing sub-optimal things that are fun regardless.
Thank you. I’ve been trying to find just the literal formula for calculating all the bonuses and modifiers, and everywhere online I’m just finding “it’s just dice plus your modifier duh” but couldn’t find anyone that mentioned the ability mod is every 2 levels above 10 on your modifier stat equals +1
So funny to realize how much our DM took out of the game over time because we just couldn't be arsed to track it. Thanks for making this. Legit - some tabletop based content from you would be welcome. Also - Since you're so familiar with both systems, comparing pathfinder to 5e would be interesting for those familiar with one but not the other.
I just am excited for another Larian game. Great story + great combat will be amazing, and with how similiar it plays to Divinity it's going to be a blast. Just a few more days
Man, before I even get into the video, I just want to say that you've been putting in some crazy work hours lately. Don't forget to get some rest before the actual game comes out!
Im 44 and i have never played D&D style game before. I bought this on steam 5 days ago and i'm totally in love with it...however! The mechanics are very intimidating. I feel like i am learning a new language from scratch, which i guess technically i am. I wish the tutorials were more in-depth to be honest. But as i said i love the game and i refuse to quit. I will do my best to learn everything. If i can SL1 all souls games i can do this lol. Btw, great video i learned a heck of a lot. I subbed btw, thank you.
Great video! At some point I'd love to see you discuss the differences between 5e and BG3 (changes to races/feats/resting, karmic dice, adding in more environmental damage, etc.) and what you think of them.
I'm hoping you can give us a more detailed breakdown of the classes on release, for instance what exactly the new subclasses added do in the game(not just speculation) and more details on the entirety of the monk class even though I know it isn't a fave of yours at all.
I've been playing since 1st edition D&D, even played some Chainmail once though my only experience with 5e is via Critical Role. That said (your favorite saying. :P ) this explanation of combat in BG3 was extremely informative and helpful. Thank you!
Still have my copy of the Chainmail rules, scary to think I've been playing D&D for over 40 years now. Trying to wrap my head around 5th Ed has been a pain, maybe I'm a Fudd, but I will always prefer "The Old Ways", so videos like yours are great.
This is a good video in terms of covering the fundamentals, constraints, math involved with combat. That said, what does it mean in terms of applied strategy? Just think a good follow up would be working through an actual combat scenario. What makes sense to pre-buff? Should we send whole party in vs 1 or 2 first? Where should you position characters beyond just high ground? Should you concentrate on lower HP enemies before higher? Could go on. Haven’t seen anything really talking about combat aside from the math…the game covers this for us already
I am interested in the game. Been getting into dnd, albeit slowly, but i have been enjoying it so far. Am hoping this game will help me get into it more
I'd just like to say a huge thanks for all these BG3 videos you have done. Every class video has been such a wonderful insight into how they work. All your explanations are so well delivered, even a D&D novice like me can understand what you mean. Thanks again, I've become a big fan of this channel 🙂👍
I'm guessing that since monk wasn't in the Early Access it will be a little difficult to do a class overview, since like Mortym I suspect some heavy house rulings on that class. That won't stop a general overview, but if he does one it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Yeah, yeah, the Monk knows. The poor Monk knows... (LOL!) (It was just funny how in the video the Monk gets its name called out always for the exclusion it got, you know? I did watch the other videos, I knew why it wasn't included, but it still is funny when you watch this video alone: "Everybody but the Monk, I say!" ... Good old harmless fun)
I think its also worth noting that trying to keep your starting ability scores as even numbers is a good idea. Like have your top stats at 18, 16, 14 for example instead of 18, 17, 13, since the +1 only comes in at the even digits. Less important skills can be kinda dumped so long as theyre not all super negative modifiers
So this is slightly off topic, but I might be interesting to you folks nonetheless. It is very true that D&D is the first of what we today call Tabletop Role Playing Games, and every RPG can trace it lineage to it in some way or other. it is indeed the most popular RPG... in English. Once you get out of the Anglosphere, however, it's quite often not even the most popular FANTASY RPG. In German, for example, The Dark Eye is king while over in Japan Sword World is top fantasy TRPG. There is, however, another English-origin TRPG that's in the top 3 in every region globally: Call of Cthulhu. Which, given that the CoC ruleset is even MORE math-heavy than D&D, is rather impressive.

You are killing it on BG3 content!
I am interested in the game. Been getting into dnd, albeit slowly, but i have been enjoying it so far. Am hoping this game will help me get into it more
Absolutely love these videos mate! keep up the good work :)
I finished KotoR2 this week. I'm ready
This was a fantastic breakdown. So easy to understand.
This has been very helpful. Thanks!
Great video. With many noobs like me new to the genre vids like these are very welcome.
I'd just like to say a huge thanks for all these BG3 videos you have done. Every class video has been such a wonderful insight into how they work.
All your explanations are so well delivered, even a D&D novice like me can understand what you mean.
Thanks again, I've become a big fan of this channel 🙂👍
This channel reminds me of what gamer is supposed to stand for
The most adorable thing is seeing you turning around and whack the hog as Gandalf
I was very annoyed with that thing and knew it would almost certainly die from that, so that was a weird bit of spite on my part.
@@MortismalGaming 😂
Of course if any channel that would be on yours I would find a clear tutorial on all the combats mechanics :)
Is it just me or is there no BG3 playlist compiling all your videos? Would have loved one to binge watch them all.
There is
Just played the EA and got absolutely destroyed trying to jump the Mind Flayer lol
Good show sir the hype is real now🙂
Poor Monk.
So much hate for the Monk.
(LOL!)
Thanks for your videos!
I'm guessing that since monk wasn't in the Early Access it will be a little difficult to do a class overview, since like Mortym I suspect some heavy house rulings on that class. That won't stop a general overview, but if he does one it should be taken with a grain of salt.
Yeah as mentioned (thanks) I need to see what they changed in the full version first
Yeah, yeah, the Monk knows.
The poor Monk knows...
(LOL!)
(It was just funny how in the video the Monk gets its name called out always for the exclusion it got, you know? I did watch the other videos, I knew why it wasn't included, but it still is funny when you watch this video alone: "Everybody but the Monk, I say!" ... Good old harmless fun)
hello Mortismal BG3 intrigues me it looks Amazing
I think its also worth noting that trying to keep your starting ability scores as even numbers is a good idea.
Like have your top stats at 18, 16, 14 for example instead of 18, 17, 13, since the +1 only comes in at the even digits.
Less important skills can be kinda dumped so long as theyre not all super negative modifiers
Unless you are planning for certain feats that grant +1 to an ability score. Then you get your bonus and bump your ability up to an even mumber.
I feel like I can play D&D 5E with ease now. Thanks Mortim! 😂
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the great content. ❤
