- A special performance on our first birthday of "The Number Three" by Khruangbin from Canned Acoustica FIVE held in the Green Room at Warehouse Live, Houston, TX on December 22, 2011 in support of a The Houston Food Bank.
Canned Acoustica loves Houston music and helping our community. We invite the best musical acts in town to perform in our concert series and challenge them to rethink, rearrange, and deliver a unique performance of their songs using only acoustic instruments. With no electric frills and thrills to hide behind, the artists have only their skill as songwriters and their talent and ability as performers to deliver a great and unique performance. All proceeds from the concert support and raise awareness of a local charity or cause.

This guy has mastered so many playing styles it’s almost freakish. Can play Funk, Blues, Jazz, R’n’B and screaming leads effortlessly. Whilst adding influences from world music, without it ever sounding gimmicky. Harks back to players like Hendrix and Eddie Hazel whilst still sounding fresh and new. Damn, he can even shred Bluesgrass on an acoustic. Mark Speer is just an unbelievably talented musician.
Dont know if talent is the right word, he has more then 4160 hours on the guitar. So its mostly passion and practice

Kudos for the Mark Speers love! I been playing the instrument my whole life, I am 54. I can play pretty much anything at this point. Mark not only has his own licks (we all steal them) but he and his band created something original outa what they had, which is cheap Mexican or beginner type guitars, amps, gear, their hearts, and their will to make the best of it all. The critics love slamming these guys. It kind of upsets me. In a world of polished stage acts with no heart, this band is a breath of fresh air. The jam band circuit is so tiresome these days, and I know these guys play festi gigs and such, but I dont consider them one of the jam band acts. That whole scene needed something different. Khuangbin is certainly that. Everything else that's out there bores me.

Goodness! That bass is perfect with all its tone and simplicity- no need for fancy runs or slap bass to fit into the composition perfectly.

It's glaringly obvious that he's an excellent guitar player regardless of the effects he uses, name a high profile guitarist that doesn't use them. He's the second most exciting guitarist I've discovered this year after Billy Strings, a flatpicking prodigy who is mainly acoustic based but also embraces effects as an extension of the potential for guitar creativity. Effects don't hide bad players, that's a myth.

That’s true.
I've been around a long time and heard a lot of bands and lead players. The fact that he can't stand SRV is a plus in my book. However the more I listen to him the more I like him and he's got real chops. It doesn't hurt that his bass player is the reason that spandex was invented in 1959..
