Hi Edward I agree with David Hoyles,my son who is a bricklayer lays the bed like you I did not teach him that method I only spread that way when restrictive Ihave proved pulling the mortar to you is much faster way of spreading more control.
Thanks for comment Twentyone twos, as a general rule the mortar mix should always be weaker than the material being used. I would use 3:1 anything below ground level, 5:1 general brickwork, 6:1 lightweight insulation blocks. Building sand, Cement (OPC or mastercrete) water and a little plasteriser (Feb) to increase workability. Some bricklayers like to add hydrated lime, personally I don't.
