  • Developing the ankle motion can sometimes be difficult. We might experience twitching and not being able to control our ankle, or just not getting the synchronization between our ankle motion and the pedal. In this video I show an exercise that will benefit substantially if not solve your problem completely!

Thank you, such a great lesson on the difference between leg and ankle, and how leg gives the momentum. Exercises I added are anything where the leg stroke is not on the beat, or when the left and right feet start at different times. It takes some brain reprogramming before everything is executed properly, and yes as you said: so many things to take into account to get closer to a flawless technique (but it's so worth it :)

Yesterday I broke through a 125bmp barrier :-) I gotta say this, although there is multitude of kick drum tutorials nowadays, most of them don't go that in-depth as yours. Sometimes they just tell you do this, not this and that's it. But you're left with uncertainty. You on the other hand are trying to explain this super in depth, so that you know straight from the beginning that you're practicing the correct thing. In the beginning I watched various tutorials on youtube and kept practicing along, but there was a thought constantly in my mind - am I doing it right, so I dont loose time and patience by practicing wrong technique? After around 2 months of being really motivated to learn double kick, but struggling, with superficial progress, I re-watched and analyzed some of your videos, made some corrections to my technique and yesterday I finally broke through that barrier I was struggling with, the relaxed ankle correct way. I play drums on and off for more than 20 years, but never played double kick and my left leg is totally off. Sometimes I could pull off, let's say, clean-ish 120-125 BPM but thats just for a while, like 15 secs and then I desynced :) Today I started at 105-110 bpm, staying at this pace for quite a while, but doing correct relaxed ankle. At some point I felt my left leg does this just as effortlessly as my right one. Once my foot got this, I could slowly, small 5 bmp increments, go up to 2 bars bursts up to 160bmp, never ever possible before (130 bpm was my failure point). And it felt controllable ! So I really confirm what the're saing- start with slow tempos, exactly for the purpose of correct technique, so the muscle memory gets this right. Of course this is just the beginning, but the barrier is broken :-)) Thanks

I'm not getting the beater back when using no spring... I'm using a DW 3000 double pedal... what can I do?

    Hi James! Love your videos!
I find that my shin muscles are over active even though i am playing heel up and tire out which leaves me with less and less control.
So when i try to play ankle motion. My shins want to do all the work. Which changes can i make to get my calves to do more of the work?
I really need help with this🙏🏻

Marthyn dropped a good tip on this once: sitting low and increasing beater height. You won’t necessarily play like that in normal life. You’re just doing it as a way to take the leg out of the motion; and to get feedback from the pedal that you are using the calves
Also, trying to get a big beater swing since the shin, by it’s very nature, would try to choke the rebound.
