Grubby is right. There is input delay issues for sure, I've noticed it since release and its honestly baffling that nobody talks about it. There is also issues with shift que, like you see it a lot, pro's queing up 2 archery ranges (or w/e) > send vils back with shift que, then they come back to the ranges not even being started 15 seconds later because the vils "ignored" the first part of the shift que and then the pros are just like "wow I'm just bad" whenever it happens to them. A lot of folks seem to forget the old world of casual multiplayer: playing your IRL friends who aren't that much better than you, playing fun game modes (so many of which became their own genres like tower defense and MOBA), and sharing custom scenarios. 35:50 great topic grubby brings up, i dont think it makes any sense to complain about "apm" in a REAL-time-strategy game, its in the genre title included actually, it would be the same complaining about "i am not possible to win only with tactics, aiming is too important" in a FPS, its just a core mechanic which you need to have on a decent level atleast.
Masmorra, I think you misunderstood Grant in the "The next major RTS will fail" video. Yes, singleplayer focus is a big part of RTS and AoE4 did focus on campaigns inititially, but Grant implied that one of the most important part of the singleplayer part of AoE2/WC3/Sc2 was the customization, AKA the scenario editor. Community making their own maps/games etc. was a big part of continuity in those games. AoE4 had none of that, they had 4 campaigns and then never did anything for the singleplayer base again (or at least focused much more on multiplayer than singleplayer afterwards, so obviously it didn't do much there. Hence why Grant pointed out AoE4 failed there. And obviously RTS'es focusing on multiplayer will eventually fail in the future too, which I think is pretty likely to happen too.
This is a quote from the video: "... for game releases like AoE 4, the Campaigns were an *obvious* afterthought,..." This is just factually not true. If he wants to say there weren't enough of them, or that they were bad, fair enough! But then make that case! Say they were bad because of a, b and c, and instead they should do x, y and z. Thanks for your detailed comment!

48:00 I love RTS. I've played a lot of SC, SC2, WC2, WC3, and AoE 2, all at a casual level. AoE 2 is the only one of the four where you can still follow top-level PVP, even if you've only played it at a relatively low level. In particular, I have beat every single campaign mission in SC2 and WC3, both base game and expansions. I've definitely spent more time in SC/SC2/WC2/WC3 campaigns than in AoE 2 because let's face it, AoE 2 campaigns are very shallow and not as good. Yet I'm lost when I see top-level play in Blizzard games. It looks nothing like casual play. You might play AoE 2 at a very low level and struggle to beat the AI on Moderate, but you can still watch Warlords, or RBW, or Rage Forest, or even a death match tournament, and understand what's going on. I think a lot of it is that even at top level AoE 2, players are using the same units and same concepts, but just executing better. Even a campaign player could follow what's going on. Let's just say that the kind of stuff that Grubby or Serral does on average, no campaign player on Normal difficulty ever has to do in WC3 or SC2, lol.
I hope it will be more than just Liereyy joining them. Not sure how it will work, but if it were 3-4 people, a whole team who is then supported and trains together would be much more interesting as a potential challenger to GL.
That's a risky business, building an entire team only to be in the shadow of GL. Starting with one player is a way of testing the grounds for potential later evolutions. Even more so that most tournaments are solo anyway.
@@pierred3088 Depends on how the contracts would look like. I have no information on it, but we have teams like Fox, mYi and TAG too that get support, but I doubt that all of their players get so much money that they can live from it. Of course you can start with 1 or 2 and sign more later. I mostly thought that if several players train together long-term it would have a bigger effect. For example dogao was signed to TSI, but as far as I know he was the only AoE 2 player there, while Fox regularly hosts small tournaments where all of their players compete either amongst each other or against other invited teams.
15:15 As someone who has like 18 phone chargers and hardly ever lets the phone get to low battery, I always feel vindicated when I hear stories like this.

Dude im 1500 warcraft and 1200 aoe2 player, and always thought wtf is happening why my villagers in middle of map, thank god grubby noticed it in just 30hours. I thought i'm just stupid noob 🤦. If you get used to fast control groups it's tormenting in aoe2
From a programmers perspective it definitely sounds like how commands are implemented in DE is flawed. I am guessing that when say Viper presses 5 to get to his town center to queue villagers then instantly after presses say 1 plus mouse click to send his army somewhere the game is slow to react and his tc selection is still active. Or vice versa, hard to tell just from the comments here. The DE devs clearly need to queue incoming commands properly and not have them depend on computer performance or whatever other bottleneck there might be.
I think the entire drama around red bull ladder doesnt really make sense. There is only 4 people qulify. No matter what we gonna have people like Hera, ACCM, Yo - so well known best pros in AoE2. Sure the problem would be if we had 8 or 10 people invited. But here its only 4 spots. Believe me, those 4 who win will be check by community left and right at the end. Its not like Youpudding will get in the redbull doing 1 strat only.
An issue I've just realised about RTS is not really the APM - it's the pace. It's a 20-40 minute sprint with no downtime. That's why I enjoyed DotA more, you had times of high action and low action. Or when playing single player I often can just pause and look around my empire or army. Multiplayer? Aw heck no, there's always something you need to keep doing at full speed. It's not fun.
I think multiplayer pros have a different aditute to singleplayer. The Aoe4 campaigns arent good. They are boring in gameplay, 0 challange, repetative, no side missions and maps arent used in full. If we compare the AoE2 campaigns like Jadwiga, zizka, ChingisKhan to aoe4 then the gap is massive.
I have to disagree with Masmorra on the point of AoE4 focused massively on singleplayer. Spending alot of money on real life cutscenes but then having boring gameplay shows to me they just thought "give people a fancy video and singleplayer will work". AoE2 doesnt even need full video cutscenes and campaigns are still beloved, because as long as you give a good setting for the gameplay it is enough. To me it felt like they didnt invest any real time into the campaign itself. The missions felt bland and aside from a few the objectives were very uninteresting. At least half of the missions i played had bugged AI that couldnt even attack and one mission i couldnt even end because one objective didnt trigger.(This is all experience from the first two months of launch so no idea if they fixed all those issues now). The english and french campaigns in particular were to worst for me with bugs nonstop. Just because mulitplayer was also lacking doesnt mean the time went into the singleplayer. The game was just lacking on all fronts. Maybe they used the same amount of time to develop both aspects but singleplayer in general needs way more investment to make it work than multiplayer, so of course it would feel lackluster. Coming from AoE2s mostly great campaigns it was just a giant downgrade and slap in the face for me.
Agreed spending money on that which is unimportant such as "historical documentary cinematics" means nothing. SC2 WoL is the best rts campaign ever because not only has it got insanely good production all around it but it's satisfying to play as well with good scaling challenge. Even your mission order will heavily affect how it plays out, because you unlock different stuff in different missions. And an incredibly important part of single player campaigns is the ai. If the AI is stupid and you win or lose by random chance you won't have a good time. Or as is the case for AoE2 where the AI is incredibly annoying with microing ranged units. This is especially annoying in the second to last Joan of Arc mission where ever archer/longbow will endless kite you separately. It feels horrible to play against and no human will ever play like that.
Agreed, AoE4 campaign had a lot of potential but was let down by bad AI and some tiresome missions. Also Grant's video is bang on with the importance of co-op and user development tools (e.g. mods & map editor) - AoE4 was way too slow to bring anything like this out. For sound, and to an extent spectacle it did pretty well - though fell flat on a few points (e.g. units not distinguished, no random delay makes all units act in perfect synchronization) - and then there was the UI
Again...I don't claim AoE 4's single-player is good, I wouldn't know cause I didn't play it. "Spending a lot of money" on single player doesn't mean it's good - agreed! - but it does mean a lot of focus was put into it. I mean by *definition* that's exactly what it means... Grant claims the campaigns in AoE 4 "were an obvious afterthought" and having spoken with some folks who work at World's Edge I *know* for a fact this is not true...
Masmorra the Singleplayer content in AoE4 was hugely underwhelming, and that RESULTED from it not being the focus in our (singleplayers) opinion. The campaign telling you after the mission "and then person X who you just played died shortly after that off camera. The End." felt to us like missing global queue felt to you
Grubby is a really cool guest in this, PROs from other RTS can always look at some things happening in AoE from a different perspective

Multiplayer? Aw heck no, there's always something you need to keep doing at full speed. It's not fun.

You spoiled LimitedViper matches! >:((
I think multiplayer pros have a different aditute to singleplayer.
Came here to comment on this too. Launching with bad multiplayer doesn't mean it has good single player.
To be fair, pre-release marketing was almost exclusively focused on the campaigns.
Masmorra the Singleplayer content in AoE4 was hugely underwhelming, and that RESULTED from it not being the focus in our (singleplayers) opinion. The campaign telling you after the mission "and then person X who you just played died shortly after that off camera. The End." felt to us like missing global queue felt to you
OMG, why did Masmorra and Viper talking about Nili like that?? @21:30
I know Nili can take the joke but it was pretty mean.
they are making a profit, they just want all the money, suits just don't care about quality content.
wooo first!!
