- Everyone knows Sun Studio and Stax Records, but we start our week in Memphis at Ardent Studios, home base for Big Star and where many famous albums were recorded.
Thumbs up if you DO know who Big Star is!
I was in and out of Ardent in the early 70's and ended up recording some of my debut album "NightDog" for ABC Records there produced by Don Nix.. Joh Fry was the absolute best engineer ever but he later wouldn't do much of it. He occasionally mixed later in his life but he stood outside the studio while the mix was going on for "Feel the Wind Blow" on my "Road Leading Home" CD released by IceHouse Records and also produced by Don Nix in 2014, John Fry gave us a thumbs up on that one and said he was proud that it was recorded there. We were too!. Ardent was my home away from home back then and I saw Alex Chilton and Chris Bell coming in and out of the studio without having a clue who they were except I knew Alex had sung for the Box Tops.
Nightdog1978 Great story
Thank god you guys got to do this before John Fry passed!...........
What a great video. Truly. So cool hearing about both Big Star and The Replacements within 5 minutes.
John Fry (the founder) is the man. And, is a recording genius. I should drive down from Nashville, and have Mr. Fry and Jody, sign my Big Star box set.
RIP Isaac Hayes
Great vids, keep 'em coming.
You gotta get into them. #1 Record is amazing
I am crying. RIP John Fry. The true unsung hero of Memphis rocknroll
Never heard of him until this video..
@@jerryb22310 the Ballad of El Goodo is classic. September Gurls was covered by the Bangles. Cheap Trick covered In the Street for that 70s show. He har 4 hit singles at age 16 with the Box Tops . Big Star got discovered years later. Memphis biz went bankrupt in the mid 70s
@@jerryb22310 Alex Chilton died 10 years ago. rip. Chris Bell from Big Star's 1st record died at age 27. He was a question on Jeopardy recently!! Also "You get what You Deserve" by Big Star & Thirteen are good songs too
@@jerryb22310 if you want to listen to beauty try Blue Moon from Big Star 3rd. Big Star's Music could unite the world becusae Hollywood never got hold of them. Alex saw everything in Hollywood as a teenager when he fronted the Box Tops, his 1st band.
@mitenzouki
That's the reason why I clicked on this video...because of Big Star. Alex Chilton sounds like an interesting guy. I only have their first two albums but great band. Alex Chilton and Chris Bell wrote the song "In The Streets", which later became the theme to That 70's Show (except covered by Cheap Trick and a few others?)
@mitenzouki: They never became very famous but they were very much musicians' musicians. They sparked the whole power pop movement in Rock, in the '70s, that is still a major element of music today.
Did any one else not have any idea who this Big Star band was?
I'm sad to say, I'm a native Memphian, but spent the 80's - late 2000's in California. Never heard of them. Typical Memphis. The city hosts the largest International festival in northern America every year - Memphis In May. Once you get a few miles outside of the mid-south, people will not know what you're talking about.
@mitenzouki I only heard of them about 6 months ago. And I can't understand how they're not more famous? They should be as well known as Boston. Awesome band.
I would have loved to see The Replacements vs. Primal Scream. West Side Story style.
@mitenzouki They're sort of like Cheap Trick but with better songs basically.
They were the band that launched a thousand bands.
yeppers...brit beat 60s sound mixed with memphis soul/americana sounds filtered well. u will hear stax/kinks/byrds/ beatles.
Jody when i talk the albums plays.
im lovin this, finally some good music/musicians, no how good lady gaga is and how much of a pioneer justice beaver is
Why did I have to watch a 30 second ad for the 2012 FIAT before watching the 6 minute ad for the 2012 FIAT?
@PolyphonicPress lol mind giving us the short version... the wikipedia article rubbed me the wrong way for some reason so I didn't really read it.
@AnimeChick37 He recorded at Sun studios. This doc was about Ardent studios
How rad to have gotten to speak with John Fry. One of my heroes.
you're really missin' out.
Wow, 29 people didn't know Big Star? You're missing part of your adolescence, please find #1 Record ASAP.
AV Club should make 10 minute Videos.
none of the studio rooms are labeled right
Not much mention of ZZ Top? Aww.
@mitenzouki you have not yet lived life. GET ON THAT.
I have a true story involving myself, this studio, and the ZZ Top album, "Afterburner". If anyone's interested. No? OK.
whats the song at the end?
Maritime - air Arizona
@@justinchapman9880 lol you're 8 years late, but thank you....it actually is still a song i like the sound of and might download lol
@PolyphonicPress Really? No one?
Defensive stance is defensive?
Wake up bro
Primal Scream were clearly the drunkest. Only the Irish can outdrink the Scottish.
