I really loved seeing each stage being glazed and finally the last glaze. I could see how happy you were in the last stage too. The veins in the leaves were realistic and not over done and the whole stem and leaves did pop as you say with the final touches. Good to see your pallet the way you have all your colours next to each other to mix easily for lighter or darker tones! So little colour is actually used in water colour painting in the end I have come to realise. Having a simple pallet is a benefit I see. Thanks so much for sharing your painting with us the finish is rewarding and soft 😊
Oh my...I just stumbled across this website and with you specifically. I have watched many leaf tutorials but I found your teaching wonderful. You describe everything you are doing. And suddenly i realized who you are. I recognized your voice!!!!! I came in with this video. I read some of the comments and saw they addressed you as Steve. Anyway thank you. Great job, Steve. Lovely simply lovely. I have been taking lessons on botanical watercolor with Billy Showell.
Your rose tutorial proved an excellent lesson, both thru your talk through and your magnificent glazing skills. I will use it in the future to further my own talent. May you have abundant blessings for your skill sharing. Thanks again!
This is a wonderful tutorial. I’ve learned especially not to hurry the process. I like the glazing technique and how to create variations in shadows. Thank you.
Steve, this rose is absolutely beautiful! I love your style of painting. Nothing is ever repetitive, and you are such a good teacher!Thank you so much for these wonderful lessons. I would like to know more about you. Maybe you could tell us about your background in art and what types of art other than watercolors you like. Also, were you talented in art from the time you were a kid?
Just come across your channel. Absolutely brilliant. It's like having a tutor in my own home. You have avast knowledge of watercolour painting. Thank you for teaching us.
Another amazing lesson. Learning so much from watching. I have even started to "see" or "anticipate" what you will do next.. as far as shadows, lights .. etc... I get particularly excited when what "I" think needs to happen in the painting.. you actually do! Thanks again for all these awesome video tutorials! :)
This is really beautiful even when just at the pastel stage. I am concerned about how light fast the paint selection should be to just take it to the pastel stage. I have enjoyed this tutorial very much and I hope you will add another thread for us botanical folks. 😊
Loved this thanks. I find the concentration on the detail really takes you out of yourself and is so meditative and healing. Training the eye to look at the detail has actually enhanced my enjoyment of the natural world.

Beautiful! Thank you so much for your instruction! I always have the most trouble figuring out how to draw the center of the rose. Could you speak to that sometime? Thanks!
Steve is a fantastic artist. I absolutely live Strathmore paper, I use a lot of the 400 series paper however I'd love to try some of the high quality 500 series papers but they are a little bit harder to find here in the Uk. Fantastic video
This video tutorial helped to confirm the way I find myself approaching detail, in my work. It encourages me to continue to trust my process as I explore this new medium. I am a fine artist with extensive experience in pastels. I also work in mixed media. But the draw of watercolour is the way I can combine spontaneous natural effects with precise areas of study. I like to utilize the spontaneous nature of watercolour in the backgrounds, and precise study and detail in the focal subject. Do you have examples of works where you combine these two approaches? Your rose is glorious. I love how it is floating in the aire, it adds a beautiful and spiritual essence. You are becoming a watercolour mentor to me! I've never had a mentor, as I am self taught. When I have questions about the media, I go first to your channel. Your teaching style is clear, concise and a joy to watch. I appreciate how you show the colour mixing, brush cleaning and wiping , not just what goes on the substrate. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and insight.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Thank you for showing us your reference photo and blending colors. That is so tricky for beginners. And thank you for 'demonstrating in real time as we;l--hard to glean anything from those high speed "tutorials."
Can you please supply a reference photo? Amazing painting! But the photo you painted from would be amazing so we could follow exactly along. If not can I literally buy it off you?
I thank you for teaching us so many things. I enjoy your tutorials. I wonder if I might ask what brush you are using in this tutorial? I like the nice point it has.
jaxgirl13 They are Silver Brush squirrel blend. 3000S, I believe. Check Amazon. They deliver a great amount of paint, thus the lovely "watery" look of his painting. I like playing with these brushes, but I find them too soft. They bend instead of snap back. You just have to reshape a lot and be gentle.
Do you have a picture of the drawi g for this flower so I can try to paint it? I'm a horrible drawer and it's made it super hard for me to practice my watercoloringskills. I've tried so hard to learn how to draw I just ne er get much better at all
Steve. Can you tell me why I get the hard line of pigment around the edge of my washes? I've got a large flat wash down now and very satisfied with my results but I hate that hard line on the small areas like a flower petal. Usually it will disappear with other layers but sometimes there are no other layers.
you should probably go to his channel and ask there, since this isn't his account so he might not read the comments here. it's 'the mind of watercolor'.
Susan Hamilton Hi Susan, yes, pigment will pool at the edges if you don't mop up a bit. A very good online teacher, Billy Showell, has a great way of removing them if you do feel like they are distracting. She lets the layer dry, then she uses a small, flat, thin brush (she calls it "the eradicator". You wet the brush a little and then gently scrub along the hard line. Wipe with a paper towel from the white paper into the painted area. Again, this all comes from Billy Showell, not me 😊. It works very well.
Thanks Alison. I had figured the problem out for myself in the meantime. I was putting colour in when the water was still pooled up. lol There isn't much time between when there is just enough sheen and it's too dry. The only thing to do is practice and more practice and I try to paint a bit every day. Progress is very slow for me. Thanks again. I appreciate your input. :)
Steve I loved this from you!!! I think you have a future in online teaching beyond UA-cam. Just a thought if it hasn't been planted yet but I subscribe (pay under $20 a month) to Billy showells online classes and Anna masons as well of coarse they are botanical watercolorists but since you a jack of all it seems I believe you could have one heck of a thing that could be big. Just saying I'd subscribe (pay!).

YOU ARE A MASTER!
Do you ever paint the shadow side first? I was also curious if you've ever used gum arabic or lifting medium with your paint to lift highlights?
Thank you so much!
