The Trojan War is actually a story from the "Great Bronze Age Collapse" period. I think they should expand the scope and make a game like "Bronze Age Total War" with Hittites, The Sea Peoples and of course ancient Egypt.
one really confusing aspect was the no naval, it is something that CA keeps moving away from, but even this game which is meant to be just a test bed game, they could have used assets from rome 2, with the ships, just make them a bit smaller and more bronze age looking and boom naval is done, it is strange that you got a map of greece that is mostly water yet no naval combat at all, and if they wanted to really go for good points they could have when the myth expansion came out done mithical sea monsters
Can not agree more, Total war: Rome2 is the best video game in Total War series, Troy is a nightmare,I played 8 hours on Steam, too much unnecessary resources, terrible control system, change the public order into the satisfaction, I do not understand why should they do that. In the past, maybe you do not have enough legions, but you can use some strategies to win the war, but not in Troy.
Thing is, naval combat isn't just something that can be added in at a push of a button. Not only is it an entirely different game mode that needs its own AI and core gameplay mechanics, but the ships themselves require vastly more animation/modeling work than units do. So considering Troy was a budget title that still managed to have a pretty buggy and flawed release, I really don't think naval combat was ever going to be something the developers could have added even if they wanted to.
@@trevordavis6830 yes and no, yea you have to get the naval ai working, but because troy was build on the same engine as all the other current games, it wouldnt have been too much work to use the assets from rome 2, as in troy era they still used Bireme. all you needed is a coat of paint and some work. execally with the beach landings of rome 2, you could have had a more epic troy map simular to carthage
@@trevordavis6830 The problem is that people dont play naval... most autoresolved them in Empire, Napoleon, Shogun 2, Rome 2 and so on. The reason they move away from it is because the few of us who like them and play them isnt worth the cost and time to make them sadly enough. The reason they gave was the low interest in it compared to the time and cost it took them to make it happen. I personally loved the sea stuff in Empire, Napoleon and the beach landing stuff in Rome 2 but I was in a minority.
Sooo, how many famous sea battles are there in Greek mythology? O right, NONE! There are famous naval expeditions and travels, but none of them involve large scale fighting.
@@shiroamakusa8075 When you say Greek Mythology, you mean the fictional mythos writings right? Cause in the actual ancient Greek history we can name a few naval battles.
@@shiroamakusa8075 Also fyi, Athenian fleet was a force to be reckon back then, winning naval superiority in Aegean pelagos and some parts of Mediterranean pelagos through fighting. Athenian naval might put down the Persians in Salamina Bay.. Study some history. I sure do, almost knowing everything about sengoku jidai, your history 😁.
@@Lykaonas_Ns Yeah, when I say MYTHOLOGY I mean MYTHOLOGY, Einstein. This is about the MYTHICAL siege of Troy, the classical period is wholly separate from that. There are no famous sea battles in Greek mythology, so saying a game about Greek mythology missed out on not having them is ignorant. The closest it gets is the Argonauts getting pursued by the Colchian fleet after stealing the Fleece. Maybe learn some English before spouting off and embarassing yourself. O yeah, and cut the racism. I'm not Japanese anyway.
Troy failed for one reason. It released on Epic. I have several friends who were so pissed about that. Like 3 people didn't even want it FOR FREE. That was a big statement.
It makes it worse that it still managed to flop even though it was free. I got it for free but I just hate having multiple launchers on my pc and usually only have steam.
I think that part of the problem was that it wasn't something that people were asking for. So many historical players are itching for Medieval 3, Empire 2, or Shogun 3 that they were disappointed by the initial reveal of Troy. I don't know, just throwing my thoughts out there.
History fans are impossible to please, that's why CA is focusing on fantasy. Also who tf wants shogun3? I can understand empire 2 as it was somewhat of a flawed masterpiece, but Shogun 2 is as good as new. It doesn't need a sequel for atleast for few more years
@@Vajrapani108 bro after 5k hours in shogun you could imagine that the time has come for a new one xD, and not only the Story Shogun the Multiplayer feature was overshadowed a lot, since u couldn´t find enemies to conquer the lands. This would be pretty awesome to revive such a feature and bringing in China/Korea in.
Cause Warhammer is ther cash cow, after fucking over historical games(like Attila) they just sit back and watch the money roll in from blind warhammer fanboys.
@@Vajrapani108t do you mean by that dude? The only thing we want is not over the top equipment for our units, no one man army defeating whole units and no mythical animals like a frog puking on soldiers, is that hard to accomplish? The only reason CA has released like 4 fantasy games in a row is because it brings more money, because they can add more skins for the heroes and the mythical monsters and fantasy is something that is attractive to new players
the game doesnt even have the mechanics/engine to create interesting infantry combat for infantry combat to be interesting you'd need to make positioning, terrain, moral, formations and pushback core mechanics in modern TW game terrain has barely any impact positioning is irrelevant as it devolves into HP blobs that dont care about being rearcharge in the same way gone is moral based combat where skillfull players could achieve army routes meaning the majority of deaths (just as in history) occured after the routing formations have been either gutted or been reduced to magic buffs instead of being properly simulated like in early games out of all these pushback based on unit mass/strength (which would need to be a new mechanic) is the most important aspect to make heavier infantry viable and stop the game from devolving into units just being upgraded versions of each other what the games meta should have been: light infantry for flanking, heavy to push the enemy back and create holes in their battlelines, ranged units to pin enemies down, slower killrate but higher focus on draining stamina and morale, being able to switch out exhausted units, flanking being devasting to morale and defense, having the high ground provides signifacant advantages, forests for cover and ambush, setting fires to force enemies out of burnable terrain, swamps and water slowing enemies significantly, usage of traps and barricades
The big thing for me is the fact that it leans heavily into the “mythos”. Like, i get it- fantasy makes money but I want a grounded, more realistic empire or victoria total war game or a Rome 3 that isnt shit like Rome 2 or even medieval 3. For a lot of historical fans this could have been a great bronze age game but we just said “fuck this I dont want heros that can kill thousands of men and eat arrow and sword damage like its cake”
Yeah, I get that! I would honestly have loved a bronze age game, and would really love to just have Troy expanded into Egypt and Mesopotamia as well. But alas.
@@JA-lr5ix no medieval warfare (I think it’s something kingdoms?) but it’s all new units new factions , new objectives and winning conditions. For example if you’re France you gotta wage in the 100 year war with Great Britain
@@JA-lr5ix DEI is single handedly the best mod for historical Total Wars It changes the battles to be way more realistic and tactical as well as a one thousand times better campaign with way more HISTORICAL factions and variety Look up DEI videos/explanations on youtube it just got a big update as well like two weeks ago!
It failed for me because the battles were weird and too fast, no unit colision and unit mass, animations were not engaging and damage done was off balance. if the battles got a overhaul making it more tactically apeallling and slower with realistic animations, with more consequences in enganging the wrong units it would be an amazing total war. Sad that the arcade style got over the game design.
Troy has a lot of good/cool things going for it. I just cannot get over how bafflingly terrible unit collision is, combat animations, and battles in general just feeling so flaccid.
Great video as always Andy, I see your points. My theory is that CA held back Troy on purpose because of the exclusivity release on Epic. What the heck is a "truth behind the myth"? Myth players would never be happy with a historic ancient game that's slow paced, and historic players is also confused by the myth-focused game mechanics. I think CA deliberately saved the full myth DLC for the Steam release to try and drum up hype, but by then it was too late. Players don't want to pay full price for a 1 year old game on Steam, and free players don't want to pay for the DLC on Epic (players like me). It's a good game otherwise, mythos mode made it very fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the stylized UI design. But a good game ruined by terribad financial decisions. If they hadn't try to have their cake and eat it too and released the Steam version + mythos for maybe $15-20 and the Epic mythos DLC for $5, perhaps the game would have been revived.
Thank you so much, QN! You might just be right, they might’ve held out on the goodies because they knew a lot of steam users wouldn’t spend money on the epic store, me included. It’s a shame, really :/ at least we got a truly great game, and I really really hope the studio, CA Sofia, gets to work on more stuff as soon as possible. Wouldn’t mind having them make Medieval III or Empire 2 - I need a total war game with this level of performance!
@@AndysTake Now that you mention performance, wow do I remember how smooth Troy is. Not as many fancy graphical settings but my machine ran it at both higher fps and higher settings than WH2/3. And window mode actually works flawlessly. I really liked the stylized map as well, I know many people don't but I think leaning heavily onto ancient Greek style art was a great idea.
@@AndysTake for me it always felt confused on launch, like the truth behind the myth could have been cool, like the cyclops being a big guy with a skull mask that does look cool to me and doesnt break the historical aspect, but then they give your lords magic spells, it just fells confused to me, like they wanted to do myth from the start but because there hadnt been a histoical title for a while they tried to force it to be that historical when it wasnt planned to be and got all mashed up. for me it isnt about if it is historical or myth, its more arcade vs tactical, and a lot of these newer total wars keeps leaning to the arcade, removing things like matched combat, formations, imagion how much better it would be to go into shield wall or phalax vs these big monsters, rather than just throwing them into a mosh pit
@@nitebones1 I totally agree, and that’s perhaps the thing I miss THE MOST in Troy, namely unit abilities like formations such as shield walls, spear formations etc.
@@AndysTake its funny that CA most arcade game total war arena, was one of their most tactical, having different abilites, differnet generals with abilites, making you think about who your facing
I loved this game and payed 0 dollars for it. I play almost all my modern games on Steam but put all my time in this one on Epic. I do question releasing Mythos so damn close to Warhammer 3 though. I'm a weirdo and thought Historical Mode was the best way to play. I wish there was a way to see the Epic playerbase. I still want a real historical game though, not a mode that's an afterthought to a fantasy or half-fantasy version like you say. edit: I did buy the Ajax and the Memnon DLCs though, I really liked Memnon a lot and Ajax has a fun start.
The fact it was free and epic exclusive for a long time was a big reason people never picked it up. I missed the free day and after that couldn't justify 30 pounds to buy it.
You think you want more historical games because of nostalgia but in fact you don't. Even in historical total wars, variety of units is kinda exaggerated and brought to the very extreme. Without some special abilities, fantasy units or spells there is just no way to make battles somehow innovative and interesting and you are left with pure hammer&anvil tactics with a lot of units throughout history not even having a cavalry available. Of course there is some space for innovation in campaign map or maybe they could include a story mode or something, but total war is about battles a lot...
@@milansvancara Try DeI mod (divide et impera) for Rome 2 and you'll realize that you don't need special abilities OR fantasy units to make battles extremely fun and immensely tactical. All the while having purely historical units that existed during the Era. That being said - DEI is a passion project and took many years to make so it's not something you'd see Creative Assembly do, especially since it's more focused towards players who actually understand tactics and proper, historical battlefield strategies. All that being said, I actually enjoyed the mythos focus that Troy had, my problem was that resources grinded the game to a halt in the middle of a campaign. (though that could be seen as a positive to some)
Troy felt confused, that's why I think it flopped so hard, they didn't know if they wanted to appeal to the more recent fans or the hardcore historicals. I really disliked the trade system, felt too RTS like, something you would see in AoE rather than TW. That with the lack of weight in the combat, the stats focused (a bit understandable) battles and the art direction were the nails in the coffin. Thank you for the review, Andy! A lot of us take for granted why something sucks or its great, but few really dissectionate it, so thanks again for it and keep going!
Thank you so much, Alejandro! Always value your input and comments :) I understand not liking the trade system since it’s so different, but I think it worked here because you actually need the resources in everything you do. I do agree that we could’ve had more though, like a general monetary system as well perhaps with the trade resources on top. Either way I thought it was refreshing and much more interesting than the traditional RTS systems.
@@AndysTake You must think me an Attila fanboy by now, but I feel like that the system could've followed some of its framework, for example, if you wanted to build acueducts, you needed access to marble, if you wanted to build sanitation buildings as the barbarian factions, you needed access to a wood heavy region, I feel that perhaps making use of it would make it a lot better, but just my opinion. Thanks to you for always answering and caring!
My biggest problem with this and other TW games is that armies can roam all over the place without having to worry about supply and logistics. I absolutely hate it when enemies armies march or sail across from who knows where and land on my shores and start sacking and razing cities in my rear when the couple armies I can afford are too far away to intervene in time.
@@SILK_7744 you salty you got wrecked by an AI army? gonna cry? Hannibal sailed to Carthago Nova and then waltzed all the way around coastal northern Med to get to Rome, just like the AI. that's my point. AI and Hannibal do the same stuff: wreck your armies while I sit back and laugh
For me the fact I missed it for free by a few hours meant I was never going to pay for it at the prices they wanted. It left the impression that it was either: A) not good, like thrones of Britannia B) I would be paying for something everyone had for free. Considering I didn't like Epics scummy practices anyway and resent giving them money it was never on the list. By the time it came to steam I'd forgotten about it - a usual story for the epic exclusives.
I feel the same about missing the free release! Just felt sad and wrong to go and pay for it after that.... One thing to go for free a few years later it to BE free and then earn money through DLC but definitely some crazy corporate decisions that screwed this one over
What killed my experience was a lack of roleplay variety - you are almost always either Greek or Trojan, with Amazons/Thracians/Egyptians on the side as one-off factions. Yes, I do play Total War for the strategy, but... I think another big attraction to the series for me is the spectacle + stories you can create within the game that allow your imagination to be swept away. Total War has never really been _that_ complicated a game, it's mostly just a series of juicy experiences that make you feel good (e.g. expanding your empire across the campaign map, doing the perfect cavalry charge that wipes away a tough unit in a battle). The big Total War games that cover a lot of ground - such as Warhammer, Rome, Medieval, Empire - I think were popular for this reason; there were so many ways you could roleplay your campaign experience with a truly diverse range of units that actually felt different rather than just be reskins of a limited type (e.g. it was hilarious to conquer Europe as a Native Indian tribe, or encounter a couple of small as heck galleys from the Barbary States in Empire: TW... yet have them murder your big western ships because they simply had a couple of big ass cannons that tore through you - you had no equivalent to that sort of thing and it was brilliant). I thought the Amazonian + Memnon/Rhesus DLCs were the best they'd done for Troy as it just started to open up the player to the many possibilities that a bronze age-themed Total War title could have given the player and introduce other cultures that were really different from Greeks + Trojans. But even so, you could not really visit their true homelands and conquer them (Thrace + Amazonia were further north-east, and Egypt/Ethiopia/Canaan were further south-east) - the opportunities to roleplay their cultures was extremely limited. Also, their unit rosters weren't all that different either; the unit classes remained mostly intact.
Troy is a Saga title and that is the reason. Unfortunately, Sagas are regional focused therefore no expanded regions where other bronze age cultures are
To me, its the "everyone is greek" issue. Especially considering the game is set in ancient history, where you don't even have a lot of history to differentiate factions, it kinda makes everyone feel the same. I would be more interested if they added Egyptians, Phoenicians, Scythians, etc, all with distinct cultures.
This game was great as my first Total War. Well, I got it for free. Felt like a combo of Great RT Battles with Civilization mechanics. Played Odysseus as my first. Came back when Mythos came out and finished a Hector and Menelaus campaign. Had fun, but I don't feel like coming back to the game.
I have been playing totalwar games since the beginning and I feel TW Troy is one of the best TW games ever made. It just looks and plays so well and feels like it had a solid design direction. The Sofia team does really good work I will be looking forward to their next project.
Simply the graphics and animations are strange. The proportion of caracters is way off, the weapons are off too. The movement and fighting of individual soldiers is just silly.
Well you started by pointing the Steam charts...but when the game come out on Steam most already have played and a lot on Epic for more than a year, we even got the for free if you got on first day. Resuming taking the Steam charts for this game doesnt mean much.
You gotta remember with the steam player count of troy, a lot of people probobly have it on epic as it was given for free and it came out first on there
You’re completely right Jack, a ton more people own it on Epic - but that doesn’t mean they play it. And what I’m basing this on is that none of the big TW UA-camrs play Troy like ever, and Troy videos generally don’t tend to do that well, so it seems as though not many show an interest in the game
The "looks like mobile" complaint for literally anything has to go. Mobile is a platform and there is no element that is distinctly 'mobile'. I suspect people that say this, you included have a limited or non existent experience with mobile games. What the hell does "mobile like" even mean? I keep coming to these videos for information about this franchise because I know very little and there is nothing in any of them. I can't actually make a distinction between a video titled 'review' and this. Just a list of points with nothing to explain them or back them up, the audience is just expected to know I guess.
That’s valid criticism! When I say “mobile like”, what I refer to are menus that are big, with big buttons that you would usually not need for a mouse pointer - but one you would definitely need for a finger to click efficiently on. In my opinion, this kind of UI hampers the experience became 1, I find they rarely feel as full of love as “older”, more complex UIs, and 2, they tend to not make the best use of the screen space in my opinion, being either too big or too slow to move around for me. Hope that clears things up a little!
@@AndysTake Okay well thanks for clearing that up. People use it a lot in the gaming industry as a very negative and often unfair term for so many different things it often means nothing. Larger UI is a valid thing to point out although wouldn't you think that a larger UI (wish a scaler) would please more people? Since most people have poor eye sight and some play on a larger display further away. Assuming of course it is just a larger UI and not a small UI with a lot of crap which wouldn't please anyone.
Total war should bring out medieval 3 as it will save this franchise. Core gamers of total war were actually players who like historical game and not mythical game. They wanted wider audience by releasing mythical gaming into total war but ended with nothing. Look at the numbers of their series in shogun, rome and medieval. Medieval was so fun because you had so many option of factions to play with and each faction was unique in their own way.
Taking the Steam player count for Troy isn't really fair, most if not almost all players got it on Epic I love it and it's one of my favourite TW games, it's by far the most beautiful in every aspect imo (graphics, UI, music) and I enjoy the diverse factions mechanics I feel like people who hate it didn't really play it for the most part, or just played a few turns when it came out and expected either a Rome 2 in Bronze Age or a Warhammer lite, which it isn't I didn't buy the Mythos DLC bc it's fucking too expensive and I don't need it, I just prefer to play Warhammer if I want magic and monsters. Historical mode is meh, so I prefer the vanilla Truth Behind the Mytho mode which is honestly not too bad imo
I agree, the original mode is not too bad! I really enjoyed the original game, just really felt like MYTHOS made it even better. Glad I’m not the only one who loves Troy :)
I agree, Troy really didn't reach its full potential, though I see a different reason why: They fully neglected to implement the main objective of the game (in the default campaign mode). I grabbed it for free and gave Achilles a go. A "proper" way to play him would probably have been to go raid the enemy territories. Except, even for a specialised raiding faction like him, it still doesn't make a lot of sense. You spend several turns to go somewhere, you then get to raid maybe one or two settlements, at which point you'd have to consider going back home, again spending several turns doing so. Meanwhile expanding the same way as you'd do in any other TW is heavily incentivised. As a result, I conquered much of northern Greece, which was a bit too easy. The rest of the coalition, as well as the Trojans, go ahead and sail back and forth and fight each other with neither side making much gains. I still tried to stick to the objectives one gets in the game, as I actually wanted to get the Ilias experience, so I finally sailed over and started raiding, especially given that my hero had the abilities necessary for my troops to regen outside of friendly territory. But it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped, and the moment where my bubble burst was when I conquered the city Helen was in. I had no idea what to do with her, and after googling realised I couldn't do anything with her. In other words: She wasn't properly implemented in the game except for Paris and Menelaos. This was plain silly, and I stopped playing. On the plus side, I loved several aspects, especially the bronze, stone, wood and gold trading system. They should consider having similar resource systems in all games going forward. I also loved the heroes. I actually liked the semi historical, semi mythological gameplay. For me this wasn't a contradiction, it fits the setting and the source material perfectly. We do have a lot of historical and archeological evidence of the time, and I like them taking the myths and trying to represent them in a grounded way, as many myths do have a grain of truth to them.
Thank you for the comment! I’m glad you enjoyed the history behind the myth part. I didn’t mean to say it was factually bad or anything, just that it might not have been what most people wanted or were interested in.
You are right, Total war lacks depth to have a meaningful diplomacy system, which is why games like troy and fots that are faction vs faction dont really works and everything but map painting is useless This is even worse with the greek factions, which literally cant leave greece because their faction mechanics dont work
I really enjoy Troy and agree it's an underappreciated gem, but disagree it was a big failure. Compared against the previous entry in the saga series, Thrones of Britannia, Troy got over a year of paid dlc. Thrones got nothing, which suggests it was a sales flop. I would have liked to see a few more lord packs to fill out some empty areas, but the game got more content than I was expecting given the decision to do an epic exclusive. I also want a bronze age total war like you mention towards the end, but I don't think that sort of map expansion towards Mesopotamia was ever in the cards for Troy even if had been an extremely good seller. Who knows, maybe CA will give us a stand alone bronze age historical title.
The two big problems with Troy were just what you said - exclusive release on the Epic Game Store for a full year, and the compromise between history and fantasy instead of making either feel truly satisfying. The price to get the true game experience that required the Mythos DLC was just the awful coup de grace to the game's chances. Fixing an obviously idiotic game design choice should never require an expensive DLC.
to me it feels like instead of trying to make total war a better experience to play they focus on making it easier to produce. for me keeping the magic ability to just run up to a wall and climb it, either like spiderman like in shogun 2 or magically summoning a giant ladder or grappling hook kind of ruin siege battles that and the throw torches or punch a gate till it breaks. and the fact that they seem set to not bring back naval combat into games or any actually fun and innovative things. empire had issues but at least it introduced a number of new things. naval combat was amazing the scale of the campaign was exciting, the ability to deploy defenses in a field battle or have your troops use stone walls or buildings as cover for firing positions was all great ideas and made battles more dynamic in its way.
Troy was one of the first big Epic Game Store exclusives and was for free in first day after release. That makes Steam numbers highly misleading. Milions of people got the game for free on another platform and did not buy it elswhere. Of course, only a percent (1% is 75k) of them were relly into it, but that is a lot of players. I still play it on Epic and it was the main reason I even made and Epic account. It was also a Saga title, so smaller in scope by design - and still got a lot of attention and expansions. Compare it with other Saga's (Fall of the Samurai and Thrones of Brittania), not the main titles.
Ah to Shogun2 a Question: I bought shogun2 and fall of the samurai. in my library, ist just shown as "shogun2". In the store, S2 and FotS is both "in your library". However, when i start the game, in the main menu i can only select to play fall of the samuray. "Rise otS" and "Shogun2 campaign" are both grey... Do you or anyone else knows what to do? :(
I just got back into total war recently and I’m really loving your videos, they got me really up to date with what’s going on with the total war community and CA
I have to many TW games and I only have so much time. I have barely been able to give time to any of the games of late. Troy will eventually get my time.
Same here. I'm still messing around with mods for the original medieval total war. Troy is great and I look forward to playing more of it. But there are so many other total war experiences that it's hard for any of them to monopolize my time
Troy is amazing, especially if you are familiar with the source material. I will never understand the 100% history or mythology purists what matters is if the game is good and it is the best Total War since Shogun 2. Not to mention it seems like an absolute labour of love, they even did the Shield of Achilles.
uh no. I would take Rome 2 specially after all the updates that actually made it good and Attila over troy any day of the week. The fantasy weirdos just ruined the genre straight up.

Rome 2 is the last title to run smoothly on my potato. I'd love to try troy, but after three kingdoms was a slideshow I guess I'll have to wait until I upgrade to a lemon.
Honestly, Troy will likely run better than Rome 2 - I get about 30-50 more fps in Troy than Rome 2, which is crazy considering Troy looks better as well.
I'm playing Troy with Radious mod and a couple other tweaks and it's great fun. What I love the most is the battle maps - I am so bored of the typical "empty plane with no strategically important points" design of TW Warhammer and others.
i love the iliad and have my own version of the appearance of characters in my head so something that's turned me off from this game a bit is the look of the characters
I love Troy. Its arguably the best looking TW game, the best performance, the best blood mechanic. What I hated was the campaign tbh I wish there was a mortal empire version of it
I love Troy too! Haha I really liked the campaign. How could there be a mortal empires version of it? One that included Mesopotamia and Egypt maybe? A full Bronze Age game
myself, and everyone i know, who owns troy, got it on epic when it was free. so of course its not going to show up on the steam charts. im sure that played a decent part into why the numbers are down.
Why it failed? Epic Games. Full stop. The 7.5m people who picked it up were just people wanting a free game (like many on epic) not actual fans of the franchise. That's it. They sold out. End of.
For starters, every game, book and film out there completely slaughters the Greek history and mythology. Iliad despide having mythological beings in it (I.e. the gods) in an attempt explain events, the events themselves are real and not made myth. There are numerous amount of factions in the Iliad, the Acheans and their allies and the Iliads and their allies. Heroes galore from both sides. Just stick to the book man, is all there for you. It is the best history novel ever written. I rate it above The Lord of the rings. They put so much effort in Warhammer so it can be done. They could have included the politics and intrigues and all that jazz. It could have been like Rome II but thousands of years earlier.
Quite a nice positive overview, I made an Epic account in order to grab Troy for free but never actually ended up playing it. I might take a look at it sometime with the Mythos addition. The initial marketing for it just demoralised me really hard, cannot quite remember what it was specifically but I was just not excited for the game.
@@AndysTake thanks for the feedback. I wish I had the game on steam but I was hesitant to pay for it. Maybe if it goes on sale I'll buy the base and mythos on steam.
I wish they made it more historical honestly, I think making it lean more into the myth part probably just leads it to being seen as a lesser Warhammer title even though it's not. Or make it more mythy i don't know, i think Troy is one of the more interesting Total War titles.
I’m planning on getting Troy in a few days I started with medevil 2 and shogun 2 would it be worth to buy or will it be different from what I’m use too
Nice review. I like this game also and wish they had broadened the scope as you mentioned to Assyria/Mesopotamia and Egypt as well. :( I've been wanting a bronze age total war for some time and we got one a little bit but I wish it was more.
There are bronze age mods that cover all those civilizations: 1) Bronze age for RTW (campaign and battles). 2) Bronze age for medieval II (only campaign, but they are working to release battles). 3) Bronze age for Rome 2 (only custom battles, but they are working to release campaign). I hope it helps.
Your only data is from steam charts, not Epic store which gave away those 7M copies, i played a lot with a friend is a great game, you should probably try to meassure the Epic version with how many people is playing it online, thought i dont know if it would be an accurate assesment.
Sure is misleading, but it’s easy to see how unpopular it is compared to other TWs by the amount of Troy content and posts there are out there. Doesn’t mean it’s bad or that people don’t play it, but since we have no other metrics, it’s the only way to somehow compare them. Either way I agree it’s misleading to an extent.
I feel personally that Troy was a game that Creative Assembly did not seem to commit to. When they went with 'Truth Behind the Myth,' that was a little bit of a red flag for me because that sounded like a compromise. I play the game a bunch and even right off the bat, I could see that the game just did not go where I felt as a fan it should have been. If Troy released how it is now, I feel this game would be WAY more favorably viewed by the community that it currently is and/or was. In my mind, if they wanted to do the 'Truth Behind the Myth' idea, they should have went with how Rome Remastered was released where you could pick and choose how you wanted your campaigns to play.
I keep coming back to Rome 2. Love that game so much. The setting gets my juices going. The mods for that game too like DEI add such a crazy level of depth that I'm always replaying that game. I played 1 campaign of troy and felt no desire to ever play it again
Imagine if it expanded to the moddle east and egypt where it became a battle of religions of the day. Greek Pantheon helping against Egyptian men and gods.
Why did it failed so hard? Pulls out list: 1. Epic store, Epic keeps trying to "provide competition" for steam but fails at it MISARABLELY with a inferior store (remember this MODERN GAME STORE didnt even have a shopping cart of all things, EVEN WEDSITES DO THAT) and instead of trying to do better they just POUCH exclusives and give out free games. 2. Truth behind the myth, as noted this mode did not satisfy ANYONE when the game launched, if you going to do something like that, COMMIT TO IT, don't half ass it. Like 3 kingdoms, the "records" mode is considered the most stripped down mode, then Mythos came out and just like 3kingdoms "Romance" mode its considered the best part because it leans into the Troy myths, SPEAKING OF, 3. Mythos pricing, Troy is 40 dollars (fair enough), Mythos which is considered THE BEST PART OF THE GAME is 25 dollars, thats over HALF the price of the game itself. (a total of 65 dollars for JUST THAT). I don't care if they gave this game out for free that is nutz, mythical units and some cosmetic effects to both the map and battle map, really adds to the Troy Myth immersion. But i doubt its worth paying 25 bucks for. 4. Same problems as Warhammer/ modern TW games, Heros are tanky as all hell and can rekt/distract the enemy army while the rest of your troops murder them or pelt them from a distance. Meanwhile your troops really cant deal with heros besides pelting them to death. Also every single city has a ARMY SIZED garrison waiting for you so instead of being a rofl stomp after beating the enemy armies it turns into a SLOG as you siege city after city. 5. Unit Traits, Who though it was a good idea to include traits like "Unflankable"? Let alone "Unflankable" and "Unbrakeable" on the same unit. It really takes away from "using Tactics" against your enemy.
They try to buy popularity instead of offering a quality service, besides the fact who owns it is reason enough for me never to have that garbage platform on "my" pc ( owned by MS 10).
TW games have always been big games, troy takes place in a very tiny region, too tiny for me. The mythology expansion was very underwhelming and disappointing. The art style killed it for me, somehow, Age of Mythology looks more sensible than a Total War game. The cartoony sea monster and skyboxes are disgusting.
I liked troy allot. And I liked so much the truth behind the myth as I am more history fan. I like the battles allot. The only thing that I didn't like that I didn't feel its really a battlw for troy but more dominating Greece. There is no focus on the main story as I always get occupied fighting my side in thw real story before I cross the sea
@@AndysTake hahah yes. I think the best solution is that agamemnon makes a call for all Greeks to attack in a certain time of the game and that makes a kind of truth and focus on attacking the other side
The great problem that made me rage quit of this sequel is how generals or lords cannot get surrounded or missile barraged while engaging duel. The one who have better level, skills and gears literally wins. THAT' not so fair for duel with Achilles, Hector or Odysseus that have excellent melee stat.
It's a terrible game. I wish they would go back to the city controls from medieval to that were so much more enjoyable and in-depth. Of these nonsensical unit creations and money making DLCs are getting ridiculous
The price is to high, that is why I don’t buy it. A shame as it is one of the most beautiful of CA’s games. I would pay $20-$25 but no more for the whole package.
Those steam numbers are going to be quite skewed. Not only is Troy a much smaller game than Rome II (which has amazing mods at this point) and a more limited appeal, but Epic had Troy for free on the first day. I bet that there are a lot of players (like myself) that picked it up on Epic instead of steam because of that.
@@misterlove7895 I will partly agree. I think it's just because everything has been ported from previous games and the new factions really aren't that interesting to me when we have other factions that are just better. They're missing the opportunity to add more and really haven't done much with what they have
I got this on epic store for free. But I only loaded it for the first time last month. With the advertising I thought it wasn’t a full game, just a small free thing to get me to use the epic store. It remains the only game I own on the epic store, everything I own is on steam. So yeah a lot of what you say rings true. But I am glad I have it now and got it for free to boot.
I don't like hero units in total war. I'd rather have them have like bodyguards so they operate like a powerful unit or just not have the general playable in battles
I haven't touched it since it's release. Been meaning to go back. I did want to try out the actual Mythos mode at some point but might be a while. I know it took me a few years before I finally decided to play Thrones of Britannia. I'm right there with you though. The middle ground between myth and historic was a huge mistake. I did like the the unique gameplay mechanics on the strategic level though. But I guess I only ever played as Hector so not really sure how other factions might have been, but I loved the fighting for your father's favor with Paris. Honestly, I thought that could make for a fun co-operative campaign with a bit of a competitive side as well.
A bronze Age total war would be amazing, especially if focused around collapsing Babylonia empire. But the game would have to divert more attention for empire building and settlement/population management which CA has been slowly straying away from to accommodate visual appeal. All about pacing and innovative ways of progressing depending on political structure, wealth, this was the time around the first human manufactured economic systems so the potential to make an amazing total war game is certainly there. But if the wrong person makes the decisions it doesn't really matter how much historical context is usable, someone will placate to marketable ideas rather than relevance. Look how badly medieval 2 was nurfed compared to M1...totally gutted for a copy and paste game. That seems to be the take and give between the franchise. The more freedom the player has, the more dumbing down the game turns out. The more restricted and developer determined, the more visually appealing and smooth. Then they throw up their hands and say hey, don't like it go make a mod while we enjoy the millions. Cmon be CA is like Pfizer
The battle maps, unit recruiting, and even the economy were amazing. The ai did a good job at unit formations and tactics. I think ot was a solid game overall and have zero regrets owning it
This popped up in my feed and I have to say after 2 years this still holds true. Its sad that this game wasnt as good as their previous title. Also would you mind sharing what music you used in this video as I really like it.
I dunno if it failed... thats a point of perspective I guess. Who did it fail for a part of the player base or for the company? It was downloaded 7.6 millions and sold... for money about 3.6 or so million copies. Epic paid a ton of money for it and they then got revenue from the sold ones. In the annual reports they where happy about it and the release on Epic. I think they made a good profit considering the production cost was probably lower than a standard TW product. I also think it was a fun, enjoyable Total War with good battlempas, interesting improvements for diplomacy and a resource system. The time period was also great. The addition of the myth stuff later was just icing on the cake for me. I probably was one of the few who liked this middle ground stuff. But im glad they added the two other modes and I prefer myth since the historical records arent so many and reliable of this time period. Many of the characters might not even have existed in real life. Anyhow Troy is the strongest Saga title and I doubt it was an economical failure for CA. Maybe it was seen as a failure for some parts of the fanbase as you point out in the video. It would be nice to see how many play the Epic version daily since it was downloaded so much.
I got it for free on epic and totally loved playing it, but after a while i started missing something (mods), as it wasn't on steam i couldn't be bothered and quit, everytime i want to play again i see the big ass price tag and i decide against it. Will never play it again even though it is my absolute favourite total war game (after rome2 ofcourse)
By the Gods. Not mentioning the punishing character mechanics, the whole campaign map as a whole and the diplomacy is discouraging. The traditional trade diplomacy is already good enough. The resource upkeep is burdening and weirdly enough gold is limited. It is impossible for most characters to even hold a whole province. The characters loyalty changed to motivation makes it incredibly hard to both keep them loyal and to properly build a province. This should only be one of those expansion for Total War Rome 2 to even consider adequate.
Honestly the only problems were the EGS exclusive, NO game does as well as it should've when released on Steam a year later, and the fact that the good alternate ways to RP are paid DLC
Very unpopular opinion: Adding Memnon as a standalone faction for the Egyptians is great, but it is not diversity in its full meaning. Adding Egypt as a campaign map expansion and others? Now that's true diversity for me.
The Trojan War is actually a story from the "Great Bronze Age Collapse" period. I think they should expand the scope and make a game like "Bronze Age Total War" with Hittites, The Sea Peoples and of course ancient Egypt.
I think that would narrow the fanbase even further. I would absolutely love it, though.
The sea peoples is the Greeks that invaded Agypte.
@@taichimastermaster4050 thats a lie
Total War Attila 2: a thousand years before Attila.
Villanovians , Latins etc too
It could be amazing to have all those populations to play .
one really confusing aspect was the no naval, it is something that CA keeps moving away from, but even this game which is meant to be just a test bed game, they could have used assets from rome 2, with the ships, just make them a bit smaller and more bronze age looking and boom naval is done, it is strange that you got a map of greece that is mostly water yet no naval combat at all, and if they wanted to really go for good points they could have when the myth expansion came out done mithical sea monsters
Very true, naval would have least added something fresh compared to the past few games! And ESPECIALLY in Mythos mode! Hydras in the sea anyone?! 👀
They made a game based on greek mythology and there aren't naval battles. Said all.
True, sad :(
Sooo, how many famous sea battles are there in Greek mythology? O right, NONE! There are famous naval expeditions and travels, but none of them involve large scale fighting.
@@shiroamakusa8075 When you say Greek Mythology, you mean the fictional mythos writings right? Cause in the actual ancient Greek history we can name a few naval battles.
@@shiroamakusa8075 Also fyi, Athenian fleet was a force to be reckon back then, winning naval superiority in Aegean pelagos and some parts of Mediterranean pelagos through fighting.

Troy failed for one reason. It released on Epic. I have several friends who were so pissed about that. Like 3 people didn't even want it FOR FREE. That was a big statement.
Agreed. It was a real spit in the face to the fanbase
It makes it worse that it still managed to flop even though it was free. I got it for free but I just hate having multiple launchers on my pc and usually only have steam.

@@fernandonavia8804 Exclusivity for a store = Trash
LOL that's so stupid. I still picked it up on epic.
Cause Warhammer is ther cash cow, after fucking over historical games(like Attila) they just sit back and watch the money roll in from blind warhammer fanboys.

I still maintain Troy has the best battle maps in the series.
I think it has some awesome layouts as well!
@@AndysTake Also one of my favorite features was how rivers become bloody when battles take place in them. An incredibly awesome detail!
I agree. I think they know that to. I bet it's gonna be a standard in future games.
100% correct- especially the mountains and chokepoints of Greece
the game doesnt even have the mechanics/engine to create interesting infantry combat
for infantry combat to be interesting you'd need to make positioning, terrain, moral, formations and pushback core mechanics
in modern TW game terrain has barely any impact
positioning is irrelevant as it devolves into HP blobs that dont care about being rearcharge
in the same way gone is moral based combat where skillfull players could achieve army routes meaning the majority of deaths (just as in history) occured after the routing
formations have been either gutted or been reduced to magic buffs instead of being properly simulated like in early games
out of all these pushback based on unit mass/strength (which would need to be a new mechanic) is the most important aspect to make heavier infantry viable and stop the game from devolving into units just being upgraded versions of each other
what the games meta should have been:
light infantry for flanking, heavy to push the enemy back and create holes in their battlelines, ranged units to pin enemies down, slower killrate but higher focus on draining stamina and morale, being able to switch out exhausted units, flanking being devasting to morale and defense, having the high ground provides signifacant advantages, forests for cover and ambush, setting fires to force enemies out of burnable terrain, swamps and water slowing enemies significantly, usage of traps and barricades
But alas.

Spot on
Troy has a lot of good/cool things going for it.

I think so too!
I’m glad you’re enjoying it as well :) I liked historical mode, but wish it had been even more fleshed out with new state mechanics etc
(though that could be seen as a positive to some)
I wish Memnon could build settlements in Egypt/Ethiopia/Canaan

It was free on Epic Games Store the day it released.
@@ryanaxelrod6140 Exactly how I got it, probably the game I play second most on there (Civ being #1)
For me the fact I missed it for free by a few hours meant I was never going to pay for it at the prices they wanted. It left the impression that it was either:
A) not good, like thrones of Britannia
B) I would be paying for something everyone had for free.
I would be more interested if they added Egyptians, Phoenicians, Scythians, etc, all with distinct cultures.
the only ones who are greeks are greeks? Trojans are Anatolian.
Ah yes, scythians in trojan war😂
This game was great as my first Total War. Well, I got it for free. Felt like a combo of Great RT Battles with Civilization mechanics. Played Odysseus as my first.
Came back when Mythos came out and finished a Hector and Menelaus campaign. Had fun, but I don't feel like coming back to the game.
Yeah I’m sure it’s a lot of fun as a first TW! :)
Attila is the greatest total war game. Make sure to play it it has more variety of factions and units.
I have been playing totalwar games since the beginning and I feel TW Troy is one of the best TW games ever made. It just looks and plays so well and feels like it had a solid design direction. The Sofia team does really good work I will be looking forward to their next project.
I completely agree!
A great studio hampered by bad business decisions IMHO.
Simply the graphics and animations are strange. The proportion of caracters is way off, the weapons are off too. The movement and fighting of individual soldiers is just silly.
Going by steam stats isn't a great measure, as Troy was free on Epic at release
I got it for free, but I seriously got bored after 20 turns lmao
So did I and since it was on EPIC I didn't want to buy any DLC
Same for me with Warhammer 3 😏 Troy's campaign is better.
Well you started by pointing the Steam charts...but when the game come out on Steam most already have played and a lot on Epic for more than a year, we even got the for free if you got on first day. Resuming taking the Steam charts for this game doesnt mean much.
You gotta remember with the steam player count of troy, a lot of people probobly have it on epic as it was given for free and it came out first on there
not saying this will make a big difference, but theres probs a few more people playing thatsn ot on steam
Troy has THE BEST battle maps in series - cool and detailed
Totally agree!! Very interesting battle fields👌🏼👌🏼
Taking the Steam player count for Troy isn't really fair, most if not almost all players got it on Epic
I love it and it's one of my favourite TW games, it's by far the most beautiful in every aspect imo (graphics, UI, music) and I enjoy the diverse factions mechanics
I feel like people who hate it didn't really play it for the most part, or just played a few turns when it came out and expected either a Rome 2 in Bronze Age or a Warhammer lite, which it isn't
I didn't buy the Mythos DLC bc it's fucking too expensive and I don't need it, I just prefer to play Warhammer if I want magic and monsters.
You are right, Total war lacks depth to have a meaningful diplomacy system, which is why games like troy and fots that are faction vs faction dont really works and everything but map painting is useless
This is even worse with the greek factions, which literally cant leave greece because their faction mechanics dont work
I really enjoy Troy and agree it's an underappreciated gem, but disagree it was a big failure.
Yeah it’s a sad state of affairs that sadly did it in for a lot of players :(
to me it feels like instead of trying to make total war a better experience to play they focus on making it easier to produce. for me keeping the magic ability to just run up to a wall and climb it, either like spiderman like in shogun 2 or magically summoning a giant ladder or grappling hook kind of ruin siege battles that and the throw torches or punch a gate till it breaks. and the fact that they seem set to not bring back naval combat into games or any actually fun and innovative things. empire had issues but at least it introduced a number of new things. naval combat was amazing the scale of the campaign was exciting, the ability to deploy defenses in a field battle or have your troops use stone walls or buildings as cover for firing positions was all great ideas and made battles more dynamic in its way.
I’m excited for you to play it! :D it’s really worth your time!
It's definitely the best...the best at crashing and burning
I want it real history
uh no. I would take Rome 2 specially after all the updates that actually made it good and Attila over troy any day of the week. The fantasy weirdos just ruined the genre straight up.
@@antoniopimentel3546 preach, they settle for cheap fantasy and it’s all garbage. Kids these days don’t realize how much better it was just a few decades ago.
@@gimmedaloot Wow, you just sounded like the most entitled boomer this side of the internet. You are whats wrong with the history crowd, I LOVE historic titles like you guys do, but fantasy isnt inherently bad. If anything, it was a refreshing thing to spice up the variety and breach new demographics, and total war, good as it is, was perfect for tackling those new horizons. I agree that CA isnt exactly the best of companies, and they too have sadly been tainted by the delusion of their fat greasy corporate pigs up top, and their incessant greed, but dont throw all fantasy and its fans under the bus, dont throw a hissy fit at us because you arent getting your way. I get it, your frustration at CA specifically is justified, but dont take it out on us.
I got it for 0$ but played maybe 1h... Since Rome 1 and Medieval 2 I cant get to TW games anymore... and CK games spoiled me...
@@AndysTake Okay, that's nice to know! Maybe I should give it a try then 🤔🙂
@@maunz5791 I’d definitely do that, but perhaps wait for a sale if you’re unsure :)
Those unit markers that make the game look like some sort of arcade game aren't helping, this game has 0 immersion.
I'm playing Troy with Radious mod and a couple other tweaks and it's great fun. What I love the most is the battle maps - I am so bored of the typical "empty plane with no strategically important points" design of TW Warhammer and others.
Yeah that’s what I love about Troy’s battle maps too, they have a lot of variety
i love the iliad and have my own version of the appearance of characters in my head so something that's turned me off from this game a bit is the look of the characters
A full Bronze Age game
i wonder what will be the next historical title?
We can only hope one is announced soon!
myself, and everyone i know, who owns troy, got it on epic when it was free. so of course its not going to show up on the steam charts. im sure that played a decent part into why the numbers are down.
I would really recommend playing it now, especially with Mythos :)
I'm one of those 7 million people who added the game to my Epic library on day one and then totally forgot about it's existence lol
The music in the backround reminds me of "Brother Bear" and im crying now...

I grabbed Troy on the Epic store day 1 for free. Is the vanilla game in a good state? Or do I need to buy Mythos?
I think the vanilla game is in a very good state, but I personally prefer Mythos.
@@AndysTake thanks for the feedback. I wish I had the game on steam but I was hesitant to pay for it. Maybe if it goes on sale I'll buy the base and mythos on steam.
I own the version I got for free on Epic, but kind of wanted to buy the Mythos version on Steam. It’ll just way too expensive.
The mythology Troy did good.
I love it. Never played before the mythology update.
I wish they made it more historical honestly, I think making it lean more into the myth part probably just leads it to being seen as a lesser Warhammer title even though it's not.
Or make it more mythy i don't know, i think Troy is one of the more interesting Total War titles.
Troy is probably a decent success inside Epic store. Otherwise they wouldn't have bothered with Rhesus & Memnon DLC even after Mythos + Steam debut
Thank you so much! Yes, a bigger scope would be epic.
There are bronze age mods that cover all those civilizations:
1) Bronze age for RTW (campaign and battles).
2) Bronze age for medieval II (only campaign, but they are working to release battles).
3) Bronze age for Rome 2 (only custom battles, but they are working to release campaign).
I hope it helps.
@@mkNf-uk8py 3 plssss :))))))))
Your only data is from steam charts, not Epic store which gave away those 7M copies, i played a lot with a friend is a great game, you should probably try to meassure the Epic version with how many people is playing it online, thought i dont know if it would be an accurate assesment.
Using steam figures for troy is misleading, as a lot of people (including myself) play it on epic where we were able to get it absolutely free
Am I the only total war fan who loved the battle camera of the original Rome Total War? It feels like every total war after changed the battle camera
Does Troy have generals that take whole units to kill, like war hammer total war?
I keep coming back to Rome 2. Love that game so much. The setting gets my juices going. The mods for that game too like DEI add such a crazy level of depth that I'm always replaying that game.
I played 1 campaign of troy and felt no desire to ever play it again
Yeah Rome 2 with DEI is amazing
Troy with campaing mod is better, it has rebalanced units and new ones too
Imagine if it expanded to the moddle east and egypt where it became a battle of religions of the day.
Greek Pantheon helping against Egyptian men and gods.
Why did it failed so hard? Pulls out list:
Like 3 kingdoms, the "records" mode is considered the most stripped down mode, then Mythos came out and just like 3kingdoms "Romance" mode its considered the best part because it leans into the Troy myths, SPEAKING OF,
I love the game. Unfortunately us historical rts are a rare breed today…thanks to fantasy
I think we’re still a good size breed, we just haven’t gotten fed in a while so we’re not as fat (in terms of taking up space) as the rest :)
Does anyone know if a mod has been made of this yet? Mods like reducing the cartoon colours etc etc
Yeah it’s definitely so easy to get preoccupied with one’s own side of the Aegean haha
When does the next non-full-fantasy Total War come ? Would love to play some nice Total War Empire 2
Likely next year, even though nothing has been announced or anything. We can only speculate, but I don’t think they would wait too long!
@@AndysTake Any idea when they typically release announcements for new games ?

It failed so hard it collapsed the Bronze Age.
I thought right from the get-go that they should have the bronze age collapse as an expansion.
Just This bro... Just this..
Maybe a sale will persuade you then ;)
@@AndysTake I tried it on Epic and liked it, but I want to own the whole package on steam…. but not at the current price. So a sale might do it yes.
I actually really like it still. WH3 definitely killed it but then WH3 killed itself with the mistake of just having the rift campaign
Iif you like it so much why dont you play it?!?
@@Juvelira I have been. It's a more fun version of many of the games because it's more melee/cav based which I love.
Half of WH3 faction sucks, hope it will fixed with dlc
@@misterlove7895 I will partly agree. I think it's just because everything has been ported from previous games and the new factions really aren't that interesting to me when we have other factions that are just better. They're missing the opportunity to add more and really haven't done much with what they have
Empire was and still is the biggest let down in my book. So much potential that they gave up on. Empire 2 pls
Same, would love an Empire 2!
I believe that Troy is the perfect game to base an elder scrolls mod on.
I don’t play much Troy, but when I do I play it on Epic Games (for Steam numbers argument). It was free, so not a failure to not pay 😁
I loved this game and I don't care at all what people say about it. It's one of the best Total war games for me.
I love it too!
Me too
A bronze Age total war would be amazing, especially if focused around collapsing Babylonia empire.
I think ot was a solid game overall and have zero regrets owning it
i’m still playing on epic games because i don’t want to repurchase the game. did you account for those players when using that stat?
It could have been one of the best ever 😔
I got this game for free and introduced me to the series so I have to say it's one of the best for me.
Very unpopular opinion: Adding Memnon as a standalone faction for the Egyptians is great, but it is not diversity in its full meaning. Adding Egypt as a campaign map expansion and others? Now that's true diversity for me.
Maybe we could get a Why you should play Troy in 2022 the game could use some positivity ;)
