Lane Jones Because it was one of his very first songs ever recorded, even before Chili peppers, I bet there was either a glitch or mistakes and he just faded out. But I do love the song for what it is. Leaves you wanting more. Much more.
Anthony Cuenca schizoid probably. there's deleted footage from funky monks where he talks about hearing ghosts cry in the hallways while staying at The Mansion. flea was like "sure buddy.." little did they know it's actually auditory delusions
I know it's a stupid thing to say, but I wish John would do more things like this and "Life's a Bath". Those two songs, to me, are his most aggressive, eerie, haunting, one-of-a-kind songs. I've never really heard anything like them.
i know exactly what you mean but, at least from my experience writing songs, some sounds and emotions can only be expressed when you're in that place spiritually and as the Buddhists says, you never step through the same stream twice
@@ianbrowning2190exactly...those songs are incredible and certainly some of my favorites from John but I'm afraid if there were many more like them then John might not even be around.
One time I was in the garage with some friends smoking weed. When this song came on I was transported into a red hot dimension of primeval anxious daze. For the whole duration of the song, while the buzzing guitars wailed away, I couldn't move, I was falling in slow motion deeper into my body and mind. 100 % of my mental processing was consumed by this song. As the song faded away I slowly descended back into my body and I could move again. Weird experience. 10/10 song.
Clearly it sounds like this song goes on much longer...wish John would release the long version. John should do a remake of this song...and make it much longer like 7+ minutes.
his voice was so good when he was around that age like late teens early 20s before the drugs etc. like how he sings here and on Knock Me Down and the '89 cover of Tiny Dancer at PinkPop. idk anyone else that sounds that way. kind of Bowie-like maybe
John Frusciante didn’t suffer though he had a happy childhood his mother was a vocalist and his father a Juliard pianist.look at all his childhood pictures he’s happy. He chose to do heroin and he launched himself willingly into madness to find the unknown like Jim Morrison says. Things known and things unknown and between are the doors. The stuff video is absolute madness and John retrieved the beauty of life and that goes back to the floating bag in American beauty that we are just dust in the wind. And if you suffer enough you will realize life is always worth living!!!!!
This song is so eerie and other-wordly! However I've come to the conclusion that it may actually deal with a very mundane episode in John's life, which was that one time when his father told him he had to get a job since he wouldn't be receiving any more money from him. Thus from that moment onwards John happened to be "out of sap"... luckily he didn't have to look for long, since AK and Flea hired him as the band's guitarist soon after that.
1:10 sounds like something Steve Vai would do. I suppose that this was recorded on Johns Ibanez. After all John could shred just as well as most during that time after studying Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and EVH so much.
I doubt John ever was as good of a shredder. His work in Mother's Milk is the closest it got. His talent is more geared toward songwriting than being a guitar god.
@@Walamonga1313 He can go off at times. He has mentioned that he's not much of a stadium guitar player but at some of the chilis live shows he just absolutely shreds imo, more so in the improv jams. You're definitely right about his songwriting tho. What a mind
I think this must have been recorded with the Kramer, since that was his only guitar when he joined RHCP and this song is pre-RHCP according to some. The sound of the bridge pickups (in which this is done) and Trem system is very similar for many superstrats of the likes, anyway. This could be whatever. Good point thou, the lick is super Vaiish.
I remember when I first got this in the 90s. I loved this song especially that crazy guitar solo. Most of the other songs were too much to tolerate. There's some other good ones though too. I had niandra lades before this one and there's more songs you can listen to from that one. I'm glad I always had that one on cassette . Ants is one of the better songs and for some reason it's left off the CD
1:10 sounds like something Steve Vai would do. I suppose that this was recorded on Johns Ibanez. After all John could shred just as well as most during that time after studying Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and EVH so much.
this album is a compilation of his works that he created at a bunch of different times. This particular song is his earliest recorded, released recording. He recorded it when he was 17. A lot of this album was recorded around the same time as niadra, as well. But the really gritty stuff was recorded later, clearly.
its not even poor production though, this is what annoys me. I think the production on this is better than that of the massively overcompressed shadows collide. it's textural and honest and yes its low fidelity but it doesn't make it "poor".
LOVE this track, its so awesome, but i have smile from the streets you hold CD and on mine there isnt the 1, 2, 3, at the beginnings? where is this version from?? and how come there are 2?
He did, but a lot of the songs were at least a few years old when they were released. For example, "Height Down" was originally gonna be on Niandra Lades, but it was pulled because River Phoenix (who plays on the song) had recently died and River's family didn't want it on the album.
He lost a lot of that stuff when a friend was cleaning out his house and he forgot to tell them to look in some cupboards. He lost even more when his house burnt down. I doubt he even still has copies of a lot of that stuff.
@ksbrownie1 I know, but most of the stuff on "Smiles" was actually recorded years before the album was released. For instance, the title track and the songs with River Phoenix on them were originally supposed to be on Niandra LaDes. I read on Invisible Movement.net that this song was supposedly written back in '87 when John was 17.
This is just my opinion, but around the time John wrote this he was very influenced by David Bowie. I think this song has a David Bowie feel to it. Definitely my favorite song of Johns though.
