@@HarshDude126 do you understand how hard it is to turn red into white? its not blood and the theroy hinging on that jojen gets scared at the end even though thought the whole theory it relies on jojen knowing the future it does not make sense. he fear only make sense in the concept of he doesn't know what to do now that his vision has been completed. heck it even is said that jojen would not fight to save himself because of vision because he believes in fate. this fundamentally shoots why he is afraid in the foot. something though that can scare the hell out of person that has visions and lived by what his visions say is going past a point were he had no visions. Blood raven killed his own uncle "to save the relm" when he was hand of the king a hundred years before game of thrones begins.. He's a one eyed basturd of a Targaryean king who used blood magic to warg into people and manipulate politics in kings landing when he was hand to the king.. When he killed his own uncle he was sent to the black cells under the red keep for over two decades to idle away in the dark to do God knows what by himself and when his sentence was up he was sent to the wall where he became Lord commander in a short period of time .. How does a guy who was in jail become Lord commander of the nights watch?.. Well it's Cuz he can warg into people and skin change and manipulate everything and anything.. Then one day he decided to go north to find the weir wood Internet tree that he lives in now to soy on everyone in Westeros and live and grow his greensear powers even more..
+Moejii Osman I'm not sure if that's a joke, but it's quite different from the story I remember: - I don't remember Bloodraven killing his uncle. I don't remember who his maternal uncles are, but the only paternal uncle I can remember is Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, and he wasn't killed by Bloodraven, as far as I know. He apparently killed his brother Daemon Blackfyre and his nephews, the twin sons of Daemon, during the 1st Blackfyre Rebellion. - I don't remember him using blood magic. People said a lot of things, but I don't remember it being a plausible thing. He probably was a skinchanger and probably knew how to use a glamour, but that doesn't mean he used blood magic. - He was sent to the black cells because he killed Daemon Blackfyre's son Aenys after telling him on behalf of the Iron Throne that he wouldn't be harmed. - He didn't spend two decades in the black cells. Aegon V had him imprisoned and then sent him to the Wall with Maester Aemon. It was not two decades. And his sentence wasn't up. Aegon simply sent him with his brother Aemon because he was a prisoner and prisoners sometimes are sent to the Wall, because their sentences are not up. I might be wrong though.
It should be noted that the emphasis on darkness isn't necessarily a reference to "evil". In fact, it seems that it means just what it seems at face value; actual literal darkness. Sensory depravation is directly linked to the awakening of psychic ability in ASoIaF. Bran's warging potential is awakened when he's in his coma; when he is, effectively, in darkness. His and Rickon's abilities are further enhanced during their time in the crypts; when they're in darkness. Bran begins to reach his full potential when he spends time in the cave with Bloodraven; in darkness. Arya learns to warg only after being blinded by the Faceless men; when she lives in darkness. Aeron's spiritual awakenings take place only once he is held captive in dungeons; when he's in darkness. I could go on, but I think you get the point. Sure, it may seem sketchy at first glance, but when compared to everything else we see in ASoIaF, Bloodraven's words can really only mean one thing. Darkness will make Bran strong, because when he cannot see he is *forced* to open his "third eye", awakening and strengthening his psychic abilities.
and yet these still could all be bad things. Good for survival, yes, but potentially bad for humanity, if you believe (and there is strong evidence for this) that the three-eyed-raven is the Great Other, the darkness, that wants to destroy humanity. That uses human ability (like individuality, greenseeing, warging, violence, etc) to get humans to make misguided decisions through visions and peers, that could lead to humanity's self destruction. So in people's darkest moments, what seems to be a "what doesnt kill you makes you stronger" is really a "what doesnt kill you makes you a pawn in our game to help us kill you all"
Arya is having 'wolf dreams' long before she is blinded. But yes, it's at that point she learns to direct it through the stray cat to 'spy' on the kindly man when he beats her. Before that she was doing things by instinct more than design.
@@arhamsaa Sure, but "dark lord" is vague. The Others certainly want to wipe out humanity, or at least mean to do harm to humanity. If the Children are behind the creation of the Others, and the Children are the "Old Gods" as in souls within the Weirwoods, and the Three Eyed Crow is tied to the Weirwoods... it's entirely possible the Three Eyed Crow could be on the side of the Others against humanity. Is the pawn of the souls of ancient wood elves that is working with ice elves to destroy humanity a "dark lord"? Maybe.
It's possible Jojen will be killed or has ALREADY been killed, but I never saw the "Jojen paste" as strong proof of this. They tell him it's made of weirwood paste; the "red veins" are weirwood sap. This is why the faces on the trees are always seen crying "blood" -- it's just the color of their sap. I think this might be another case of GRRM throwing us a red herring. Bloodraven wouldn't risk upsetting Bran this early on into their training by killing his friends.
+CadaverJunky8 but where would Bran go if he did get upset? He nearly died getting there and Jojen is (probably) gone, I don't see that he has many options either way :(
+CadaverJunky8 Alt Shift X did say that there is no strong evidence to support this theory, but as you say, there's no evidence against it. The video made a good point of showing that it's plausible, but not proven. So yeah, we should all treat the theory as a 50/50 thing.
+CadaverJunky8 " Bloodraven wouldn't risk upsetting Bran this early on into their training" Bloodraven, as far as I can tell, would risk anything if it's necessary for his plan (consider what he's already put Bran through). Therein lies the crucial issue: if it's not necessary, then he most likely wouldn't. If it is necessary, then he will do it in a heartbeat.
+CadaverJunky8 Interesting insight but still doesn't explain why Jojen is getting/used to get depressed day after day and is nowhere to be found since Bran ate the thing.
I and I am sure all your subscribers really appreciate the amount of work you put into your videos. I can tell it takes ages and all the little details you put in and animate are awesome. Thanks a lot!
A couple of points to reinforce your arguments: - Bran actually calls Bloodraven a monster. Sure, he doesn't know him when he says it, but still, that's the vibe he got from his dreams and his time with Coldhands. Bran I, ADwD: Meera's gloved hand tightened around the shaft of her frog spear. "Who sent you? Who is this three-eyed crow?" "A friend. Dreamer, wizard, call him what you will. The last greenseer." The longhall's wooden door banged open. Outside, the night wind howled, bleak and black. The trees were full of ravens, screaming. Coldhands did not move. "A monster," Bran said. - Bran's not only doing all those morally dubious things you were talking about, he's also mind-raping Hodor. While controlling Hodor's body, he clearly feels that Hodor doesn't like it, but Bran wears his skin anyway: The big stableboy never understood what was happening, and Bran could taste the fear at the back of his mouth. (Bran I, ADwD) Like a dog who has had all the fight whipped out of him, Hodor would curl up and hide whenever Bran reached out for him. His hiding place was somewhere deep within him, a pit where not even Bran could touch him. (Bran III, ADwD) Bran doesn't feel bad about using a person that has been nothing but loyal to him, even though said person doesn't like what Bran does. Someone who has carried him and accompanied in a very dangerous and uncomfortable journey. It's not that far from eating another loyal friend. Great video!
Add to that that in ADWD’s prologue, Varamyr mentions that warging into humans is considered a giant taboo. I’m sure that that isn’t just coincidence that the same book wherein Varamyr mentions that, Bran thinks about the same topic.
I have to say, I'm disappointed you didn't mention my favorite paragraph, and one I think is so telling. After the jojen paste, bran finds Meera, and Meera laments how 'jojen went home, he wouldn't change his mind...'. to me, that was the most telling about what jojen sacrificed. It also helps explain Meera dragging him on a sled, to make good by her brothers sacrifice.
You cant help but feel sorry for Jojen, its obvious he was an avatar or a tool by bloodraven to get Bran to the cave, and now that he has no use for him he leaves him sullen and anxious.
It took me a few rereads before I noticed, but you'll notice the passage identifies Bran as "Bran" and then switches to "Brandon." I think, "Brandon Stark could taste the blood." is referring to the sacrifice having his throat cut, not Bran the witness. I think there's a sort of proximity effect to the Weirwood visions, so not only is Bran seeing through the eyes of the tree, he is privy to the feelings and insights of those surrounding it at the time. There's a precedent for this in the other visions as well. I'm not sure of the exact significance of the sacrifice obviously, but Bran the Builder is the most famous Brandon Stark, and given the line, "Your monster, Brandon Stark." line, I'm pretty sure we're seeing the creation of Coldhands. I do subscribe to the Jojen Paste theory, though.
I'm guessing it's just a random Stark being sacrificed, Brandon is the most common name for them, so both our Bran and the Brandon being sacrificed can taste the blood
I think the tree consumed jojen and then the tree seeds were eaten so it wasn't eating jojen straight up it was eating the seeds of the tree that had consumed jojen the way the other guy got consumed by it. Whoever was in the flashback. The tree consumed him didn't it?
What if Bloodraven is simply aware his body is dying, and is setting Bran up to become a powerful Greenseer only with the intent of warging into and taking over Bran's body?
If I were gonna take over a new body, it wouldn't be the body of a cripple, plenty of other green seers and wargs out there to choose from other than Bran
@@joeyjones9041 only one man in a thousand is born a skinchanger and 1 in a thousand skin changers can be a greenseer. I don't think he can be picky if that's his plan.
the manner of narration and the voice are so calming and soothing that I can listen about Bran supposedly eating his friend with interest and relaxation
I think Bloodraven is good at least in an ambiguous way. But doesn't Melisandre have visions of a boy with a wolfs head serving the darkness/great other? That might be Bran.
+Michael H Yes, GRRM has done a really good job using this "fool" to foreshadow events to come; and we don't automatically place, what seems to be, random ramblings of a crazy fool in the 'important pile'.
I really love your videos. They are so comprehensive and reasonable, even for non-native english speakers like me. And there is always a possibility to pause the videos in between your speech and read the references. Thank you alot.
I think Bloodraven a little bit more complicated than just doing things for "his own interest" Like Varys and Melisandre, he believes that the ends justify the means and he ultimately works for the realm. He did bad things for the greater good as Hand of the King, as Lord Commander and I think he is doing that now to fight against the Others.
My goodness man, your videos are the best as far as Game of Thrones/ASOIAF is concerned. The videos are detailed and the way you explain everything is perfect. Using the images and quotes to simplify the theories is awesome. I wouldn't read the theories if my life depended on it, but your videos make it fun. I subscribed! Hope you get more and more subscribers. You deserve it!
I don't like the maligning of Bloodraven just because he's a freak. I don't think the Children or Bloodraven are planning on misusing Bran. Recall that this was all sanctioned by Howland Reed. I always took the "darkness will be your cloak, your shield, your mother's milk," as BR encouraging Bran to accept his fate. Further, this all occurs in the midst of Melisandre and the evil she does in the name of the Lord of Light. Darkness ain't so bad, is it? Plus, I don't think that Summer would be calm and go out hunting if he sensed anything sinister about BR or tCotF. I don't think Summer would leave Jojen to his fate. I believe Bran would have been able to smell blood in that weirwood paste because his sense of smell is likely improved by warging Summer. Jon's sense of smell is improved by warging Ghost.
it makes more sense that the tree-people/raven are the bad guys for humanity, given the war they have with humans. The whole "let's defeat our common enemy, the whitewalkers" thing makes little sense, given that whitewalkers were SUPPOSED to end humanity and just failed. The reason i think tree-kids want the white walkers dead is because they cannot control the whitewalkers, and even if the whitewalkers killed humanity for them, the walkers would be too strong to be defeated by them (why defeat them? to have all the forests in westeros to themselves), so the better solution would seem to be to let the humans kill 'em all, then manipulate the humans into killing themselves through visions, crows, and manipulating circumstances (like getting an evil leader to kill people and/or lead people into ruin). in my opinion relating this back to religion, since religion plays a huge part in the world, my theory is a common one, which is that there is/are no true god/gods, and that anyone with any abilities that seem otherworldly are just good at magic, or gifted enough to use it. It makes it likely that the red priestesses visions in the flames that tell them about a chosen one and a Great Other who rules the darkness could be referring to someone like jon snow, a potentially just ruler who could defeat the TRUE darkness, and the three-eyed-raven who is a manipulating cult-serving skele-corpse-tree who loves darkness oh so much, would be the Great Other who serves the darkness, an anti-human tree loving asshole. And the reason this makes sense in religious context is that it doesnt matter if any other gods like the many-faced god, the god of death, the drowned god, the god of tits and wine, the seven, the old gods, etc seem to answer prayers or deliver magical results. It's all just magic, unconnecting to any god. And if that's true, that there is only magic and no gods, no ones visions or prophesies or spells or anything could be discounted by an argument like "yeah but didnt you see how legit the many-faced god seems to be? that must be the true god, making all of this tree conspiracy prophecy nonsense somewhat bullshit"
The direwolves were almost certainly sent by Bloodraven. It's no coincidence that Ghost resembles the weirwood trees, nor that GRRM draws the readers attention to the fact. In a way, Melisandre does too; her skin is described as pale and her eyes red.
Season 5 SPOILERS You say in the title that this video contains spoilers for season 4, but show Shireen getting burned. Sure, you don't show her getting killed, but it might spoil some innocent person who hasn't watched season 5 yet.
The research, presentation, pace and production values are constantly nothing short of fantastic. I couldn't be happier to hear that it could go full time.
This is one of the major plot lines I can't wait to read about in WoW. It's scary that Old Nan told Bran "All Ravens Are Liars", and at the story of the long night, it was "the children" that helped (as Bran seemingly "remembers" how the story ended). Got to be planted information. I've re-read the series twice, and this is still a stand-out chapter because the "helpers" may be doing harm than good . I can't wait to read next chapter to see how this plot develops. Thanks for the vid, thoroughly enjoyed it.
I remember sharing this with my friends when it first came out... over 5 years ago... by the Gods... we all grew apart and now I don't even talk to them anymore... I miss Game of Thrones and I miss my childhood friends... Feels like I went to join the Night's Watch... Long live Jon!
There's something in the somber tone of the narration and the horrifying subject of cannibalism and blood sacrifices (along with the colouration used in the visuals) that makes this analysis particularly disturbing to me. Doesn't help that I watched this at night either. I'm not usually such a wimp when it comes to horror, I *love" horror, but the idea of a young boy being guided by someone much older and wiser but not necessarily 'good' is just so unsettling. Adding cannibalism to the mix is...just no. Loving your series btw! I really like the format; a kind of video essay. Can't wait for the newest GOT episode just to watch your take on it!
Yeah i creeped out as well... I suddenly felt the need to make some light in the darkening evening and i realized how gapingly my door was presenting the darkness that lurked behind. I had to pause to come to my senses, but that did little to reduce the unsettling feelings.
Or maybe someone who thinks hes a hero, like Brynden himself thought, but is really just a monster who does things for his and his family's good Would be a cool continuation of the perversion of dreams
Only blood can pay for life. I even think Bran will need human blood to keep his power. That would be the reason for all the corpses at Bloodravens place. Also in Season 6 we see Coldhands "feeding" him.
Jaquen is in fact the Alchemist when he pulls off his hood the discription completely matches the one when we last see him(when he walks away from Arya)
Deyw _C Didn't know that, I was convinced he was, even tho I want more theorising on his (or their) motivations for doing such things and just a nice solid video by Alt Shift X
Deyw _C Yeah, which begs the question, why would he want to assume Pate's identity? Does he want to get to the Wall for some reason by assuming Sam's identity? A lot of questions and one man to answer them: Alt Shift X.
I had never heard this theory but I am totally buying it. The whole 'turning to the dark side' arc would be very interesting. Very well done! Thank you!
I've heard these theories before, but let's face it I watch for the sound of your voice and the way you tie things together so neatly! Keep up the good work. That last part about Bloodraven having his own designs - he was also accused of setting into play some of the events that caused Egg to become king.
@@muss2055 not yet. You don't know what George has planned. I'm hopeful that if the books end this way, the story lines will be more fleshed out. I mean, with 3000 manuscript pages, two 1500 page books, you can bet Dany's not just gonna snap.
I totally glossed over these details when I read that chapter. God, that's so sick. Bran's story always seemed to me to be a welcome respite from the cruelty of the rest of the Song, appearing to be more of a dangerous adventure across a mystical land than a gruesome, bloody war. If this is true, then Bran's story may very well be the darkest of them all.
I would absolutely LOVE for you to create commentaries on some of your old videos now that we have new information on them!! Particularly this video and your WW video!!
@@noneofyourbeeswax01 it has every bearing. him knowing everything, the keeper of all stories, and being able to see past mistakes of past kings is why Tyrion says hes the perfect choice.
I've developed a bizarre theory of my own regarding Bran. It involves Jaqen H'ghar and the Faceless Men. It was never explained as to what he was doing in Kings Landing? What his mission was? Who could afford a King's Ransom to hire him? How he could allow himself to be captured so easily? I believe he was specifically hired to be captured in order to help Arya to become an assassin herself. I believe that it was Bran's future self who sent his mind back in time as a Green Seer and then used his power as a Warg to possess someone in the past to hire the Faceless Men with some very precise instructions. As a Green Seer he would know where substantial hidden treasure would be hidden for someone like him to access. Time of course would have no meaning in preparing these plans though. He'd just have to play it so no one would know who is ultimately behind it.
Awesome video as always, dont change the way u make the videos, the simplicity of the images/quotes fits perfectly with the phase of your voice/video. Great work!
This is far more interesting than the tv show. Politics and scheming is interesting and all, but the show's half-assed attempt at fantasy, in the place of a weird mythology messed up at least as much as the greek or bible ones, can hide. "The Long Night" of one hour and 22 minutes, that was shoot after dark with no studio lights, and ended after a Mary Sue's dagger
Incredible video, as usual. I'm not yet a patron, but I did have an idea for a series of videos (that no doubt would be very difficult). You should do a comprehensive summary of characters and plotlines as we last saw them before Winds of Winter comes out. Include where characters have been and summarize their last known chapter. Also perhaps postulate on where they'll be going in the next book. Cheers!
Yeah ideally I'd do a video for each major character, in the style of the Arya video. It'd be a heap of work... but there'll probably be lots of time to do it in between now and TWOW ;)
yeppers... the original guy, I say with all due respect, but I don't think was an actor of any particular note, whereas for the true meat of the story (no pun intended, given this vid's subject ;) they got the living legend that is Max Von Sydow. But they also changed the actress for Leaf, for that matter. The leader of the Children of the Forest. (well I don't know technically if she's the leader, but the main one who did most of the interacting with Bran & Co.)
Yeah there was a reason his story was left out for a season. All of the changes(I think for the better) aren't as noticeable / are more acceptable by the audience.
Not just Bloodraven at the tree seems to have, let's say, "amoral practices", the young Bloodraven Targaryen also did amoral stuff. That's actually what sent him to the Wall.
You are one of the best GOT theorists out there. You know why? You're doing it because you enjoy doing it, not to get views or money and that is brilliant. Hoping to see more of your videos. The Pink Letter theory....(hopefully sometime in the near future)
I always took that quote about loving Meera as Bran feeling through Hordor; when the group is escaping the wights into Blood Ravens cave, Brans takes over Hordor, and that's when this line is written down; that Hordor in fact loves Meera.
Please please please, make videos on your predictions of WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MAJOR CHARACTERS IN THE BOOKS TO COME. Seeing as your analysis is purely based on evidence & logic, I think you are the most qualified man on the internet to predict it. I enjoy your fan-theory videos but an analytic guess on how or where the major characters like Tyrion will end up at the end of the series is what I'll like watching evenmore. Love. Keep the good work going. other Please give a thumb if you want this too.
Loved your breakdown! My judgment about the intentions of Three Eyed Raven, and Cold Hands falling into the realm of Good vs Evil is not settled. You said, "could be more Darth Vader rather than Yoda".I don't think that analogy is the right one.. I'm seeing the "Darkness" allusions more similar to how some Hindus view the Goddess Kali. She is representative of the natural world, not evil at all, in fact our mother. She's the Great Mother who gives birth to you, nurtures you, and devours you in the end, then recycles you back into the pool of life. From a human perspective she is very dark and scary. From an existence perspective, She is the underpinning force of everything dark and light, the unavoidable truth and completely unsentimental. Bran is being sucked into that view of life, being forced to shed his human limitations and attachments. I don't think its intention is to promote an egoistic parasitic authoritarian power structure ala Darth Vader, it's more about promoting life and all of it's forms. I think a better comparison would Sauron vs Fellowship. Or.... Bran is having a completely cursed life..NOT a very challenging initiation into great power with resulting responsibility.
I feel like it's more likely that he's eating part of bloodraven. if the blood and the paste seem well combined it would make sense that it came from the one guy that's half tree.

@@blub3rry116 Gurm has repeatedly said that his novel won't have a dark lord that likes to wipe out an entire race.
Sure, but Jojen paste sounds more interesting

He nearly died getting there and Jojen is (probably) gone, I don't see that he has many options either way :(
Hayley Fletcher He could just refuse to go along with what Bloodraven wants. Starve himself or something.
This theory's kinda 50/50.
+CadaverJunky8 Alt Shift X did say that there is no strong evidence to support this theory, but as you say, there's no evidence against it. The video made a good point of showing that it's plausible, but not proven. So yeah, we should all treat the theory as a 50/50 thing.
+CadaverJunky8
" Bloodraven wouldn't risk upsetting Bran this early on into their training"
Bloodraven, as far as I can tell, would risk anything if it's necessary for his plan (consider what he's already put Bran through).

A couple of points to reinforce your arguments:
- Bran actually calls Bloodraven a monster. Sure, he doesn't know him when he says it, but still, that's the vibe he got from his dreams and his time with Coldhands. Bran I, ADwD:
Meera's gloved hand tightened around the shaft of her frog spear. "Who sent you? Who is this three-eyed crow?"
"A friend.
While controlling Hodor's body, he clearly feels that Hodor doesn't like it, but Bran wears his skin anyway:
The big stableboy never understood what was happening, and Bran could taste the fear at the back of his mouth. (Bran I, ADwD)
Like a dog who has had all the fight whipped out of him, Hodor would curl up and hide whenever Bran reached out for him. His hiding place was somewhere deep within him, a pit where not even Bran could touch him. (Bran III, ADwD)
Bran doesn't feel bad about using a person that has been nothing but loyal to him, even though said person doesn't like what Bran does.

It's funny, sometimes I read the titles of these videos and I'm like, _no, there's no way,_ but then before the video is done I'm convinced.
You cant help but feel sorry for Jojen, its obvious he was an avatar or a tool by bloodraven to get Bran to the cave, and now that he has no use for him he leaves him sullen and anxious.

I ate his liver with weirwood seeds and a nice paste.
Rollin' down the North, pulled by Meera, sippin' on Jojen juice. Laid back (with my mindmeld to Hodor and my Hodor on my mind).
this is gold
I think it’s the weird wood tasting the blond which bran can now sense
I think the tree consumed jojen and then the tree seeds were eaten so it wasn't eating jojen straight up it was eating the seeds of the tree that had consumed jojen the way the other guy got consumed by it. Whoever was in the flashback. The tree consumed him didn't it?
'He never signed up to be physic tree' is now my new favourite sentence
psychic*
In the book, Jojen was looking out the cave toward home, and Bran was like "what's wrong with him?" and Meera was all "he knows his fate is not here."
Bloodraven is terrifying in the books. I'm always so worried for Bran but he's just too young to notice
Tyrion: “And who has a better story than Bran the Broken?? I mean, the guy ate the kid from Love Actually. That’s a story I wanna hear!” 🤣🤣
What if Bloodraven is simply aware his body is dying, and is setting Bran up to become a powerful Greenseer only with the intent of warging into and taking over Bran's body?
Why not take over jojen
If I were gonna take over a new body, it wouldn't be the body of a cripple, plenty of other green seers and wargs out there to choose from other than Bran

+Lewis Jimenez his videos are based on the books.
The lord of light may as well be the lord of darkness the way Melisandre talks about him

This is one of the major plot lines I can't wait to read about in WoW.
