  • I articulate why I believe Ubisoft boasts a higher-than-average respect for the intelligence of their player base in comparison to other modern developers.

    This video reminds me how team ninja started to take greater consideration into player-base feedback when trying to develop their incoming game Nioh. Not only they listened to their players, they also let them be free and creative in their game. Also, the difficulty brings more of a tension (which encourages us handling ourselves) than annoyance to the game.

    Wow, I actually really agree with this.I didn't expect much from the video when I first opened it xD. I actually get so annoyed when games force you to do tutorials that show the VERY basics, like, atleast make them skippable. I like the way for honor did the tutorial, it just shows you the combat system and that's it.
    There are some basic videos and advanced videos for each class, and I definitely recommend checking out the advanced ones, or atleast the movesets.
    When I choose indie games to play, I generally go for the roguelike and other difficult genres of games . I'm actually developping a game myself, and I'd hate for it to be one of those "low tension" games where your decisions don't matter. I would probably get bored of it before I even started xD.
    And wow, that raider was so good. In the last alpha test I only got mediocre opponents xD.

      Yeah, that Raider was fantastic. He also blew me up as Warden, but to be fair I didn't understand what to do against him shoulder charging me constantly.
      I think 1-life games like Siege and Counterstrike (and For Honor in duel mode) are inherently more tense than games with lots of respawns, and then a small player count adds to that tension. So a 1v1 game is intense, a 5v5 game is intense, less so in 24, less so in 64. Like if I die in 64 player Battlefield, it kinda sux, but I am not sweating bullets.
      Good luck with your game, glad you enjoyed the vid!

      Man you could tell that raider was very high level. actually doing guaranteed side heavies after parries, hell probably 90% of the alpha playerbase didnt even know what parries are.

      It took me hours to discover how to do parries since they aren't explained in the tutorial. I think that's one area where the tutorial needs some help. The advanced videos do explain them as Alissah said, though.
      But yes, that guy was super good. I ran into him right when I thought I was really getting the hang of the game. I was beating most in duels, and he absolutely destroyed me. It made me realize how high the skill gap can go in this game. I asked him if he was a dev and he didn't give me an answer. He just recommended that I use more dashes.

      Stinger911 Devs actually have [UBI] tags in front of their names... And they're crazy good. Some of them, anyway.
      They actually thought htey had to go easy on us, but turns out people can get pretty good in 3 days xD.
      And yeah, some players have more hours on for honor than most of the alpha players... So that raider was probably one of those, always cool running into them :P.

      Yeah I imagine he was a part of the technical test. Playing FH as a newbie was a really humbling experience. I felt like a fish riding a bicycle. I consider myself pretty good at games, and to feel that dumb and helpless for my first 4+ hours was crazy.
      It would be cool if UBI went the DICE route and created dev-only armor that you could maybe acquire by beating one of them. Like make it black and gold or something. I hope I get to face one of them in the upcoming public beta. :)

    While I agree with you for the most part, I think the Doom-DEVs did an even better job of that^^
    Giving the basics, + sandbox (snapMap) and that's it.
    I mean the game really, literally starts with you being strapped to a table and you shooting stuff, no big introduction, etc.

      You are 100% right about Doom, and I wish I had thought of that example while making this video. The fellas at id Software clearly also respect their players.

    A bit off topic but how the fuck did that Raider block your unblockable top attacks ._.

    • @ZombieRommel
      @ZombieRommel  7 років тому

      Parries. Hit the Heavy Attack button while blocking in the proper direction at just the right moment. The tutorial doesn't cover parries. It's buried in the Advanced hero videos.

      Stinger911 Yeah I know about parries...can you seriously block unblockables with that though?
      If so...yes...yes...YES!
      I already used parries most of the time instead of blocking but I didn't know it would work on every attack.

    • @ZombieRommel
      @ZombieRommel  7 років тому +1

      Yup! Parries deflect unblockables. I kept getting hit over and over by the Raider's horizontal unblockable when I first started playing, despite dashing away. So I consulted my friend, who knew a bit more about the combat system, and he told me to try parrying, and it worked.
      What's cool here is that some classes can bait out parries. For instance the Kensei can launch into an unblockable overhead and then cancel into a standard horizontal Heavy Attack.

      Haha, fair enough. I would say based on the evidence they have learned from their mistakes.
