    One of the greatest vocalists of his era, if not all of rock - IMO. RIP. AIC was untouchable at that time.

    Young man what you just watched was one of our best vocalist of all time.. The beauty of it is, what your generation doesn't seem to appreciate, its a rock band with a powerful Layne Staley in his prime... No lip syncing, and no auto tune. A band playing actual instruments.. But the best part is Layne himself... 100% live, 100% perfect.

    It was done in 1990 with a very low budget. Unfortunately their live performances were all in the early 90s and the vid quality isn't the best. It Aint like That is a pretty good live performance since it was filmed for a movie. Their best vid quality is the Unplugged session, it's all acoustic songs and they sound great but by that point Layne wasn't looking that great thanks to his addictions.
    Check out their music videos they're all great. Them Bones, Would?, Rooster are all amazing songs.

    Live at the Moore was recorded on December 22, 1990 and used for the Live Facelift VHS that came out in 1991. The VHS is rare these days and last I checked was $75.00USD. Other songs from that concert include: MAN IN THE BOX, REAL THING, LOVE HATE LOVE, SEA OF SORROW, BLEED THE FREAK, IT AIN'T LIKE THAT (was left off the VHS), as well as official videos for WE DIE YOUNG, MAN IN THE BOX, and SEA OF SORROW.
    Love Hate Love live at the Moore December 22, 1990, is LAYNE STALEY in his prime and UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION. All other bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect. Layne is better live than studio version. One of the very few singers who are better live.
    Once Layne had his voice where he wanted it, it stayed there with very little effort. He stacked his own vocals with harmonies and melodies underneath. He was able to figure things out and come up with lyrics off the top of his head. He wrote or co-wrote over half or more of the early Alice In Chains songs (before William DuVall and yes I have my own opinion of William singing Layne's songs), and wrote all of the original songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album. He drew the cover art for the Above album.
    Layne was on this earth for 34 years. In that time he wrote songs that gave a normal person insight into the mind and journey of an addict. The pain and depression he endured to write the most brutally honest lyrics a musician could write concerning his feelings on his own addiction, what he was feeling about what the addiction was doing to him, and the tumultuous relationship he had with his former fiancee, and the emotional and physical strength he had to perform those songs live when all he wanted to do was curl away and lose himself in the drug haze I can’t imagine what it was like for him.
    Layne wrote the song about his tumultuous relationship with Demri Parrott (pronounced Per-roh). There was cheating on both sides. Listen to the song from the mindset of a sociopath.
    How many times did Layne come back home from being on tour to find another guy just so smitten-puppy love-tattoo-you-on-my-chest in love with Demri at first sight. But the Demri fans think Layne should have lain down and taken that because he deserved it for screwing groupies on the road? There a few stories of her on the road with him where the first thing she thought of was scoring junk before anything else.
    I've come to the conclusion that apparently to Demri fans the Layne/Demri relationship is a sacred, hollowed relationship and NO ONE is allowed to side with him against her for what she did to him with the drugs and cheating on him, but he was lower than a snake for what he did to her with the drugs and cheating on her. She was so independent, she DID NOT even want to be recognized as his girlfriend (God-forbid that ever happen). Even though the second he told her he wouldn't get her any more drugs, she just turned around and shacked up with the next guy who would do what she wanted. Her family called Layne back home from GERMANY where he was on tour for a damn intervention with her. Layne never thought interventions worked, but he did it for her.
    There was one instance where Layne sent her out for coke or something, and she came back with heroin. Hell, it wasn't like Demri was headed for a life in a convent when she met Layne and on the day she was to take her holy orders, Layne corrupted her. She already knew how to get drugs when they met.
    Layne could have wished upon a star a million times over that she would have married him, but she wasn't going to give up the drugs any more than Layne would have, so there was no way in hell she was marrying him. She had such a feminist independent streak. When they were making the SEA OF SORROW video, the girlfriends were all invited down to participate in the video. Every girlfriend showed up EXCEPT Demri. She didn't even show up to support him let alone be in the video.
    Discussing the title track DIRT, Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." Staley said he wrote the song "to a certain person (Demri) who basically buried my ass".
    In an interview with the Canadian magazine M.E.A.T. in December 1992, Layne Staley said about the cover of the DIRT album: "This album cover... I like to refer to it as "revenge". The woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt (laughs), instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn't even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it - she's not happy about it either (laughs). It was real eerie. The girl on the album cover is really Mariah O'Brien NOT Demri.
    She had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had.
    Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along)
    All of the above has deeper, longer stories, and I could say a whole lot more about Layne, but UA-cam has a comment-length limit so I will end with this: Layne Staley deserved better than what he received from the people around him who he thought mattered. He wrote about things with maturity and knowledge well beyond his years. He didn’t deserve to be turned into tabloid cannon fodder by the press.

    • @williamstokely9589
      @williamstokely9589 Рік тому +3

      and the press and Demri are at least 90% of why Layne gave up IMO.

    • @vonniedemers5683
      @vonniedemers5683 Рік тому +1

      I know it's just opinion... But I don't blame Demri for anything... They had an open relationship for the most part. And Layne was already dabbling with all drugs. Supposedly just snorting herion. He supposedly didn't shoot up until the lead of Ministry shot him up for the first time...
      You can't have 2 addicts in a relationship, it doesn't work. I do think her dieing did push him over the edge. They did really love each other. Alice was on the road for almost 4 yrs straight with just a couple weeks off here and there. It's hard for a relationship to survive that.. I'm sure they both were not angels.. We love Layne so we put him very high upon a pedalstal (I hope I spelled that right) thinking he could do no wrong.. But idk if you've ever been in a close relationship with a severe addict it's not easy no matter how much you love someone..
      I think if Layne was going through life now maybe he could of been treated for depression. Maybe that could of helped him..
      I love your passion for Layne... Keep it up.... I'm obsessed. You should see my bedroom. Rock on.

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt Рік тому +3

      @@vonniedemers5683 Yes, I know what a close relationship with an addict is like.
      As far as putting Layne on a pedestal. It isn't so much putting him on the pedestal as knowing how Demri strung him along over the years... always giving him just enough hope that MAYBE one day they'd ended up together and then when he didn't do what she wanted, she'd leave him and find the next guy who would do what she wanted.
      AND YET.... when it came to her rehab stints... Layne paid for them (all except the one rehab stint that Layne was called back home for the intervention... that time HER mother paid for the rehab stint).
      Her 2 heart surgeries and 2 lung surgeries one of which was to put a pacemaker in due to endocarditis... LAYNE PAID for them.
      But the second she hit the recovery room after the pacemaker was in... she showed up at Mark Lanegan's place in a hospital gown with the IV pole still attached to her arm. Lanegan sent her back to the hospital and didn't tell Layne... HOW Lanegan kept that incident from Layne...
      No wonder Layne died in isolation. Demri didn't even think to be grateful for the pacemaker or the man who had paid for it because HE LOVED HER more than she loved him. She just went looking for the next hit. And what he had to deal with while staying at Mark's place for 4 months after Demri died.... I'd isolate myself in a condo and not answer the door or phone too if I were him. But Layne lost sight of who was using him and who was an actual true friend.

      They opened for Van Halen in 1991. Played the old Spectrum in Philly. I think they played two shows there on that tour. This was just as Man in the Box was gaining traction. I was in a party of about eight or nine, and no one knew AIC but me. It's common for opening bands to be mocked, ridiculed, etc. Fans in Philly can be brutal. But to his credit, Layne early on donned a Montreal Canadians jersey, came to the mic and said something to the effect of "Flyers suck." He was immediately booed and on they went with their set. By the end of their time slot, which included Love Hate Love, you could see and feel the crowd slowly realize how good they were. Both the band and singer. Sammy Hagar later said it was great street cred to have a grunge band open for VH, and he wasn't wrong about that. They were/are a great band, and Layne was it's jewel.
