  • This wasn't meant to be a video - we were actually meeting up with Vic and Jo from Holly The Cafe Boat on the Peak Forest Canal but the spring wild flowers along the canal were too much of a draw so I broke out the 30mm macro.
A different format this time as I had no plans to actually do any filming but I think the images speak for themselves this week!
So, enjoy this extended slideshow of a walk along the canal discovering the world in miniature.

Lovely macro shots, Leigh. I used to have the 30mm and liked the magnification a lot. It was really nice for the different fungi you run into where I live. Brilliant stuff!

Thanks Blaine! I keep getting tempted by the new 90mm macro but the 30mm is so small and versatile it just keeps on delivering for me!

Another lovely video Leigh, with some wonderful images. I know everyone seems to rave about the 60mm macro, but I really like my 30mm macro paired with my em1 MK3 👍

Thanks Clive! I've used the 60mm but just love the portability and how close you can get with the 30mm. Not ideal for bugs being that close but for everything else it's perfect!

Hi Leigh, another great video, perhaps one of your best. Your experience took me back to a hike my wife and I did along the Great Glen Way in 2013.
So how is the coffee and cake at Holly's???
Great images and compelling music kept me interested, so much that I watched it again. Olympus photographers I have watched before on YT use the 60mm macro, it's plain to see the 30mm is just as capable. Depends on how much working space from the subject one wants. I liked how you did not use focus stacking (or did you?), your use of selective focus is very imaginative. The new 90mm macro looks amazing, but so is the price and it's of course larger and heavier. This was certainly an issue with the Canon and Nikon 100mm macros I owned in the past.
I still use a Sony RX-10 iii. The Zeiss T* 24-600mm lens equivalent has great close-up capability at 24mm and then from 300-600mm. Always impressed with the Olympus image quality though. Do you have any plans for some bird photography videos?

Thank you Edward! The coffee and cake is always amazing, so much so we're popping to see them at the weekend on the way back from another Lake District trip!
The 30mm macro is definitely an underrated gem of the Olympus line up. So light and versatile and able to get in so tight into subjects yet still provide amazing image quality. I do use it a lot on my E-M1 mk1 as it's a great super lightweight set-up! I'm trying to get my hands on a 90mm but I think the weight might be a bit of an issue for me!
I rarely use focus stacking either, and not on any of these shots. I just felt they worked better like I shot them and with how windy it would have made stacking a little tough too 😉
I will do some bird photography videos soon I think as the current spell of bright weather is starting to limit other photography options. I may even try something for back garden bird photography - something a little different and easier to get predicable results 😊

Great work Leigh, can't beat a bit of macro! I have the 60mm and it's a great lens. I would like to try the new 90mm. However, the price is a little prohibitive right now.

Thanks Tony! I've got one eye on the 90mm but I'm going to see if I can try it first as it's quite a heavyweight compared to the other macro lenses and like you say, it's got a bit of a price tag too!

Let me know your thoughts if you get the opportunity to test it before purchasing one. I would be most interested in your thoughts re: how it performs. Take care
