    Recently I have decided to abandon my closeup macro photography with my R5 and RF100 f2.8 macro.
    Stuart has taken the time to share his expertise and knowledge answering all my questions and there’s been a lot 😂.
    Having spoken with Stuart and learned from him I am about to start a new journey with Olympus D E M1 mkii for my closeup macro photography this has only been possible with Stuart’s help.

    i love my nikon z7 but the main drawback for me is the fact you get the focus point then have to go into the menus to start the stack. So more often than not doing that changes the focus starting point and I miss the shot. Invested heavily in the nikon lenses so can't afford to change but the OM having a focus stack button on the outside allowing you to be sure you are starting focussed on the closest point is great. Not jealous at all. Guess I will never be an outdoor macro stacker - sadface.

    Your video inspired me to get me a used e-M5 mk 2 / 60 mm macro and a V350flash because as a Nikon Z9 shooter with a 105 mm makrolens and a V860 flash my hand and wrist gets very tired from theese 3 kgs of weight . I am impressed over the Olympus so far. But I am wondering, becouse when stacking is selected, the shutter will not adjust to any shorter than 1/20. That gives some rather overexposed images - trial and error with that, and the bug has flown away. This weekend I tried an E-M1 mk2 - like yours - and that one would accept adjustment to 1/50, wich is one+ stop better, but still a very slow shuttespeed compaired to the normal sync speed. How do you get around that?

    You said the shutter speed is limited to either 1/50 s or 1/100 s (depending upon the ISO) when focus bracketing is selected. Do you know why? For me, that would be a deal-breaker -- I prefer using faster shutter speeds when shooting handheld. I must say, the composite images featured in your video look great. Just not sure I could get the same results using a shutter speed of 1/50 s. I realize many photographers, especially macro photographers, say the flash duration freezes action rather than shutter speed. But after lots of field experience I contend that flash duration alone is insufficient for freezing action. If I were you, I wouldn't be so quick to switch from Canon to Olympus. Eagerly looking forward to your reply! Walter

    • @StewartWoodArt
      @StewartWoodArt  Рік тому

      Very true, you just have to learn the exposure triangle to compensate for more ambient light. For example, I'll put up my f-stop or lowewr the iso if needed to block out the ambient light so only the flash is lighting my subject. If at any point I can't get a correct exposure at 1/50 sec I can always turn of the focus bracketing and go manual just like I do with my Canon. As for switching, I've not switched... I've added a m43 system to my line up of cameras I can use.

      Macro in the field and extreme macro on a focus rail setup with a microscope objective. I also do astrophotography from time to time. Started this macro journey 3 years ago after catching a clip of you so thanks for the inspiration. It’s been life changing.

    I once wanted to switch to M43, I found a lot of samples to watch, the feeling is not very good, the picture quality is not fine enough, there is a kind of cheap plastic feeling, in short, I feel uncomfortable after watching too much, and I feel like I can’t breathe.

    I have a Canon R5, it is superior to Om system cameras except the OM systems has some features and advantages the Canon does not have. The R5 won't do focus bracketing with flash. That is a downside to the camera. But I did buy an OM-D E-M1X because I wanted to play with the live composite, I also bought a viltrox adapter so my canon lenses worked, quite well in fact. Because this is the big bulk less desirable OM camera, I found a very nice low shutter count used one for $500 (someone who bought it for wildlife and lets face it, OM AF can't touch Canon and they were moving to Canon or Sony with the money from his M1X). Anyway Live Composite was a nice feature. I think found out later it did do macro well, and it does ok. The camera to me is just ok and nice and now sits in the closet most of the time until I want to do some more live composite images and I am not a big macro guy like you are and I lost interest when my jumping spider died (Not sure why but I got him out of the wild and I don't think he adapted to small habitat, he also was not very friendly and did not like me handling him) I would never throw my Canon away. I might sell it and buy an Sony but that is a different discussion.

      I wouldn’t spend almost £3000 on a camera that is not superior when it comes to macro photography than a system that costs only £1000. Simply put, for macro photography the OM System is better for me.

      @@StewartWoodArt Well, a film camera maybe better for you so that is an opinion. But if you are looking for a much less expensive camera, you can get an R7 for 1300 pounds (UK Camera Club) which has focus stacking. Which also has the smaller sensor with all it's benefits (slightly bigger than micro 4/3rds, which also has a 35mp sensor for better resolution [instead of OM 20mp], 40fps, much better AF than OM or even better than the R5. Still cannot use flash with focus stacking but I am sure Canon will add that feature in future models. So maybe not a camera for "me" or "you" the R7 fits the bill with a modern 36mp sensor with fast fps and at a reasonable price new (you said you paid almost 1K pounds for an old used tech that had scratches and was beat up when you could of had a new Canon camera ). If you are doing studio work, led lights can be used which I have seen other youtube macro photographers use exclusively instead of flash. But for me buying a used M1X for $500 gives me some features the canon cameras do not have is inexpensive and Viltrox EF-M1 allows me to use Canon lenses for photography (not focus stacking with flash though). And honestly, canon adding flash to macro focus stacking is not going to make me run out and buy a new camera when my old one works perfectly and I can use small inexpensive led lights to light my subject in studio. That may not work for you, but it will work for many canon camera users.
