Hi Joe, I used to be a professional powerlifter 300 kg -200 kg -330 kg (sq -bench-deadlift) skateboarded 1999-2003. Now I am 37 years old , I have returned to skateboarding after almost 20 years . I weigh 97-110 kg with 9-14 percent fat . I ride 1-4 times a month, after returning in just 15 workouts, I made Ollie 93 cm tall and learned as many tricks as I could not before, all thanks to the training system in the gym. (depends on the goals of sports) so that there are no problems with knees and the like, you need to do with weights , without a gym in any way. barbell weights dumbbells balance exercises will help progress in skateboarding, the stronger the body, the fewer problems.
When you get a foot injury, stop skating for a minute. Analyze the pain and ask if you should quit for the day. Injuries don't hurt when you're loaded with adrenaline, but the next day, you'll feel crippled. If you do get hit, take a few days off and resume with low impact.
The biggest things that help me skate is yoga (overall stretch and strengthen of the body) and meditation (manifestation and visualization techniques ) and the food you eat and being very intentional with all of that just being mindful of your body and taking calculated risks each sessh and going at your own pace figuring out what that looks like to you, but planing a routine helps as well even if you skate for 30min to 1hour per day and have mandatory rest and stretch days in between your progressing at a rapid rate, its all discipline at the end of the day , we are all capable tho.
50 here. Skated since 11. Took a 10 year break and started again at 29, took a little time considering boards shrunk. Now, I found the Anderson deck, and it's more natural feeling when I first started in the '80s
I’m 35, had ACL reconstructions on both knees and meniscus repairs, I ache after I skate, but I can’t help but want to skate whenever I can. It’s the most addictive thing I ever got into. I’ll never not be a skateboarder, even if my body gives in one day. Great video man
Im 42 and still skating. What keeps me going are creators like yourself giving me inspiration to go skate whenever possible. The release that skating brings me of my regular day to day stresses is hard to match in another way. And honestly being the old guy at the park now I am free of having to feel like I need to compete to prove myself to anyone. I am free to just skate how I want.
For sure the age is a huge liberation. I was so competitive my 20s even though I thought of myself as not competitive, with retrospect I can see I compared my ability too much with others. Now I'm just happy to skate and being more relaxed about it often end up learning more 🙌
@@vancouverbill Absolutely man, like you I also find myself learning things I never thought of because Im not focusing on what others are learning. Having more fun now than in my teens and 20's.
Started again 3 months ago, now in my mid 30s. Progress goes really fast to the old level 17years ago. Also already learned new tricks. Flipping out of grind and slides. The barrier is only in your mind you can progress as an older dude... strength training helps
Snap dude! 3 months back on the board after 20 years off! I’m almost back to my old standard but not yet… I think my 20 years off were more gnarly on my body than skating ever was!
I can totally understand what you mean. (; When i was 10 years old i started skateboarding and after a fey years on the board i got to a good level with videoparts, sponsors and trips through europe. I hold this level until 30 and then realized that my joints cannot stand the impact anymore. That was the point when i quit skateboarding and got into mountainbiking. After a 3 years break i got back into it during the corona pandemic. At first i thought i can get back on the level i had when i was younger. But that wasnt the case. HAHA With confidence, dedication and practice i got to a level which i really enjoy at the moment. What helped me (36 years) a lot is stretching, daily excercices and breaks to recover between the sessions. Also staying focused, setting goals (tricks that i want to film) and enojying the sessions helped me a lot getting more comfortable on the board. I have wife and kids so i decided to wear some protection gear (hip, shin and knee protectors and wrist guards) which offen prevent me from major injuries. Are the why so sad and skate like a girl sb dunk reps or origina dunks? (;
34 yo here and started skating again last year after a 15 years break. Using my bike as a main mode of transportation is the perfect thing for me to stay in shape. I ride about 250 km per months (around 150 miles) just by going to work and doing errands, and I never been in such a good shape in my life !! It also gets the juices flowing when I go to the skatepark which shortens my warmups.
44you here that just came back last year, after a 10 year hiatus: 1 - Strength and strech on the core. I had lot´s of back pain. Strenghtening my core, and stretching it helped a lot. 2 - Squats and legs strenght. The power over ratio (leg strenght up overall body weight) will make you jump higher and easily 3 - Good food, good rest, lots of water. Your body won´t recover as fast as when you´re younger. Give time to time. You won´t learn tricks as fast and you can´t get frustrated. Just keep having fun. 3 - Padded shoes and soft wheels (Powell dragons) helped me a lot, as they absorb lot´s of the impact when you land. Just tried some 101a wheel these days and found the impact really high. Went back to the dragons.
Man, I found you channel yesterday, I have binge watched the crap out of it. I beleive you when you say in your Q&A you will be killing it in two years, I am sure when your fitness level increase you will be mental. Myself 35 yo, 2 kids (4 yo and 18 month). Really never believe that i would skate again as i stopped in my early twenties. But I have started again 2 years ago while brigging my oldest kid to the skate park. Great father and son time together, I am sure you will love it too ! I am now getting some old tricks back, getting new ones and struggling to get the old tre flip ! I have found that mountain bikes helps a lot with knee pain I had a while ago ! Keep up the good work Mat from France
Listen to this guy. Not only has he taken away my knees pain from skating but he has helped to make my knees all around better. And I am an electrician. I spend hours on my knees plus I have Osgood slaughters. Don’t know if I spelt that right but it’s a lifetime of knee pain and discomfort. It hasn’t bothered me since I tried what he has suggested over 2 years ago. Really helps.
I completely understand trying to keep skating as you get older. I'm 54 and try to skate at least 3=4 times a week and try to keep up with all my skate friends that are at least 25yrs younger than me, all I can say is take care of your body and it will take care of you. Keep up the good work but remember your only old if you let yourself be old...
Subbed! I'm 44. I have been a flooring installer for over 20 years. I have one knee that I had surgery on 8 years ago, torn meniscus. In the process of building a board. Skated in the 80s and 90s. been almost 30 years since i skated. This video will be very helpful going forward.
Thanks for the exercises! At 41 it had been a challenge working with random weak muscles and stiffness. Been stretching and working on core as well. Watched a bunch of your 360 flip videos and am trying to land one this year! Thanks again.
I started skating for the first time at 45, learnt to Ollie by 46, dropped in by 47, broke my knee at 48. Now trying to get kick flips at 50. I think one of the good things about middle age skating is that you don't have so long to live with any serious sustained injuries, unlike a kid who will have to live with a serious injury for far longer.
52 here! Still pushing! Still shredding! You have to stay in shape, and the older you get the more work it takes… but you have to stick with it!! ( I’m walking backwards all the time.. LoL..
I started for the first time at 35 - 2 years ago :P best time of my life! go out there and skate! there are so many things to do on a board that do not involve your knees exploding to dust.
I'm 38, still rocking but you need to respect your body. Every single day is not an option anymore, but still fun. I hope I still get a good more 5 or 6 years ahead of me.
I'm 38, started recently and I skate only flatground, because my knees bag for that lol. I learn most of the básics: Ollie, Varial, shove It, 180 Frontside, 180 backside, halfcab, frontside halfcab, fake shove It, Flip, almost learning treflip and halfcab heel. It's hard to learn with 38, because I started so later and learn things is my Challenge. I skate only twice per week, 2 hours Sessions(direct, with no stop),because of my age. I really enjoy your work, HUGS FROM BRAZIL!!! (Sorry for the terrible english lol)
Great vid man. A bunch of exercises there I'm keen to add into my warm up/stretch routine. I'm 49 and not very good but love skating and have been progressing a bit over the last year or two. For me warm ups are key, and stretching, and--like everyone says--staying active. I get joint injuries less now than when I first got back into it as the body is getting more conditioned, but I generally get more archilles issues than knee issues (though ironically I'm watching this with a sore slightly swollen kneecap after bashing it solidly in the last week). Anyway, this was a useful watch, so thanks, and keep the faith during this tough period (my kids are now 12 and 14 so its easier to get time out again now) and skate when you can, even for transport tot he shops and back etc if practical 🤙🏾
Deadlifts and barbell squats help soooo much. But rolling out, stretching out, and massaging out the whole chain from foot all the way to hip joints is crucial
Kneesovertoesguy is awesome. Almost 46 and a Paratrooper, I keep my knees moving. Also take glucosamine and MSM. I do a lot of weighted (ruck) walks on various terrain to keep the hips moving and work the small stability muscles.

Great video awesome tips I'm 28 now and am better than I ever was at 16 but my knee has been bugging me latley so I haven't skated in 3 days it's killing me but gotta be smart about it
Starting at 37 I turn 41 in a weeks time. Unless your body is really worn down you can easily start late. It all also depends on what you do. I really only do flatground and cruising. Eventually I imagine I’ll transition more to well, transition. I skate for an hour or two virtually every other day for the past two months trying to get 4 sessions or more a week. You need to listen to your body obviously. But it’s been good for me so far.
51 and still going. Unfortunately the knee exercises aren't going to help my broken leg right now but I'll come out of my cast next week and the the rehab will start and I'll be back in no time...
Thanks for the exercises. Try Dragon wheels for rough ground. 56mm go really well on rougher surfaces. Having said that the loose a lot of grip on very rough downhill…
Nice video! I'm 47 in march so very good information and exercises. 😏 I also skate at the street outside my house,my recommendation is to try some ricta cloud's crome 78a 56mm. That will give you a nicer ride.
Thank you for the knee exercises, I got hit by a car like 2 years ago because I had no brakes on my bike and my knees were never the same. I appreciate the exercises and knowledge 💪🏻 keep it up 💯🔥
I’m 44 and I just count the not even 5 minutes of stretches I do before work as being gold for the day. When I skate after and on the weekends yo I feel great. Maybe I will do the lift my leg and grab my knee stretch thing from time to time out of habit. I feel that having steady routine is what works best.
Love that video hitting 37 now I find strict diet helping me skate and deal with life. Honestly feel better than I did when I skated at 16 butttttt recovery is a bit longer😂 much from brissy aus
I don’t know how to say this in a less blunt way, but if you’re in your 20s and feeling a physical decline without having been a pro athlete or going through serious injuries, then it means you are out of shape. Not calling you out specifically, Joe, but a lot of people who have knee or back problems are more overweight than they care to admit and also just don’t do proper exercise (strength and mobility training). It’s very common for people to train inefficiently and do exercises that really don’t do much. I know that we’re all built differently, but longevity for the average person is about having muscle and less body fat, eating healthy, and not resigning to feeling old just because you realize that you are aging.
I quit skating when I was 24 (pre kids) and started skating again 7mo ago at age 34 with my 6 & 7 year olds. Most my tricks have all came back to me already plus new ones. I get little injuries all the time because I have the muscle memory but my body isn’t conditioned anymore (or young) my biggest problem have been my hip flexors. Currently jumpers knee is my issue so thx for this video! I’ll be at your local skatepark in the next few months, can’t wait it looks like a good park
Buy some resistance bands. Hip flexors made me stop skating few times. Used resistance bands and hip flexor pain gone after two sessions. Not kidding. Most likely it’s your other muscles over compensating for weak hip flexors.
@@vancouverbill can google some. But for me, stand on the resistance band ,put both feet through it. And just raise your knee up . Doing these got rid of my illiopsas pain rapidly
im 35 had thoughts of skating again but i never do i just dont have that body anymore bit chubby i do enjoy watching videos and playing the games thats my fix.
Have u Try jumprope for warmup? Started to skate again in 2020(hiatus from 1991,snowboarding since 1991...)46 y and need 5 min with jumprope to be ready for a hard sesh! Try it.
im 36 turning 37 soon , work full time , and trying to balance a relationship and still skate , luckily my gf gives me space so i go to the park for a few hours when the weather is nice on the weekends
Im 22 and I have that pinch behind my knee and its been killing me for 3 months its better now than it was a week ago, but ill definitely use that backwards jogging before the session to get warmed up
@@localjoe ill say warming up with the backwards jog, and rolling my leg out on the skateboard helped alot before I started session yesterday and my knee hurts less today
@@localjoe dude this is the first time in months after 3 days of skating my knee doesnt hurt. I have no pinch when I straighten my knee. I work from home so I sit all day, but I started squatting every once in a while like you mentioned and I feel so much more flexibility in my knee. Thank you dawg😭
you said what now? Cant continue watching without commeenting first...you're not even 30!!! Damn, i picked up skating again last year, after a 25 YEAR BREAK! I'm 46 now and everything fucking hurts. Took a wicked slam yesterday and now i'll be forced to have some days off unfortunatley. But yeah...not even 30, you're not even close to getting "old" :)
not gonna lie, saw a lady jogging backward a couple weeks ago and just watched her thinking wtf could that possibly be accomplishing... Hearing the reasoning behind it I'm even more confused
28 turning 29?!?! There's tons of pros older than you. I'm wayyyyyy older than you and my advice is don't think about your age. At all. Waste of time. People age differently. Just focus on fitness. I'm a little older than Ben Degros, can't skate as well as he does, but still slim/fit like that. I have no intention of slowing down. I didn't skate regularly for a period of about 15 yrs and when I got back to it I could still ollie really high and still totally comfortable on a board. That muscle memory is real!
Dude, your not old. Sick of hearing younger skaters saying their old when their not. I’m 45 this year and skating just like I could when I was 25. I’m probably better than I was. Just look after yourself and don’t stop skating.
I Work out every day even if it’s just for 15min , stretch and the most important is to know your limits b/c I gotta be back at work the next day haha(im going on 31 now and still shred !) 🤘💪🤘
I’m 30 and I get back on and off my board I’m happy and blessed that god didn’t let me age like everyone else My body feels like I’m 20. But then again I was a 5 star athlete in every sport I guess helped me all along my body doesn’t hurt I eat better I don’t even exercise but I do stretch and rub myself out y’all need to use cbd I don’t workout and I’m in better shape than when I played every sport in high school. I always worked out my leg’s my freind once told me always keep your leg’s in great shape so you don’t have problems later and they are what we walk on. I thank him for that I was a young buck when he told me to that and he was 40 at the time I was half his age.
hahaha sorry but im almost 40 an got a seriously bad back. i still skate when ever i get the smallest chance, aint no excuses with age and all that. just get the board and get ur ass out the door

Great video! I was just wondering what the name was where you got those rep dunks. Was it “plea shoes” or “flea shoes”? Thanks
Rodney mullen still skates tony hawk and alwa too so just keep pushing
Nice video! I'm 47 in march so very good information and exercises. 😏 I also skate at the street outside my house,my recommendation is to try some ricta cloud's crome 78a 56mm. That will give you a nicer ride.
There no to old or to young in skateboarding ❤
33 now..started again during covid. I'm better now than I ever was as a teenager
Thank you for the knee exercises, I got hit by a car like 2 years ago because I had no brakes on my bike and my knees were never the same. I appreciate the exercises and knowledge 💪🏻 keep it up 💯🔥
I already feel attacked 😂 (I’m 40)
Haha we all are on our way out
I’m 44 and I just count the not even 5 minutes of stretches I do before work as being gold for the day. When I skate after and on the weekends yo I feel great. Maybe I will do the lift my leg and grab my knee stretch thing from time to time out of habit. I feel that having steady routine is what works best.
Try the powell wheels man. It might help you get used to the ground. 👌🏼
Love that video hitting 37 now I find strict diet helping me skate and deal with life. Honestly feel better than I did when I skated at 16 butttttt recovery is a bit longer😂 much from brissy aus
Stretching also helps out a lot
@@igetitlitsoicansit2950 what exercises do you do with resistance bands for hip flexor?
@@vancouverbill can google some. But for me, stand on the resistance band ,put both feet through it. And just raise your knee up . Doing these got rid of my illiopsas pain rapidly
@@igetitlitsoicansit2950 thanks man
im 35 had thoughts of skating again but i never do i just dont have that body anymore bit chubby i do enjoy watching videos and playing the games thats my fix.
Im 22 and I have that pinch behind my knee and its been killing me for 3 months its better now than it was a week ago, but ill definitely use that backwards jogging before the session to get warmed up
Hope it works for you!
I wish I never quit skateboarding. It's one of the biggest regrets of my life. I quit for 7 years and before that on and off a few times periodically.
Coming back to skateboarding after 7 years is rough but I'm never going to allow myself to quit again.
Me start skating again at 40..now I'm 44..and can't get enough of skateboarding
Knee braces will help a lot. I'm only 24 and I have shit knees. I have to use them when I workout
you gotta get that chris chann bod bros 30 and still skating like a god
Let's go!
8:24 our bodies brazilian? 🤔😳
My right knee hurt from my board smashing into it and a fall i had a few months ago. Doesn't bother me much but its taking forever to heal.
you said what now? Cant continue watching without commeenting first...you're not even 30!!! Damn, i picked up skating again last year, after a 25 YEAR BREAK! I'm 46 now and everything fucking hurts. Took a wicked slam yesterday and now i'll be forced to have some days off unfortunatley. But yeah...not even 30, you're not even close to getting "old" :)
Do it. Idc what. Do it.
not gonna lie, saw a lady jogging backward a couple weeks ago and just watched her thinking wtf could that possibly be accomplishing... Hearing the reasoning behind it I'm even more confused
That baby monitor looks like a gameboy. 😂
Rough ground sucks. Plus if you slam, you get shredded.
49 and going to push till the wheels fall off.
I think your road is really nice. The Ground i skate is way worse than that. Anyway love your content. 🥰🥰
Thank you for taking your time and energy to share with us your insight and process.
First stepped on to a board at 35
It might be easier to just do squats, then sit and touch your toes like you did for warm-ups back in P.E. class.
I’m 48 and I skate 3-4 times a week. Fuck age just skate
Love this!
I'm 42 and agree about the love matter what but finding time can be one of the biggest challenges as you get older with other responsibilities
Dude, your not old. Sick of hearing younger skaters saying their old when their not. I’m 45 this year and skating just like I could when I was 25. I’m probably better than I was. Just look after yourself and don’t stop skating.
This title grabbed my attention 😂 almost 32
How do you find time to skate everyday with a young kid, that is the hardest challenge for me (finding time,)
I’m really turning 19 😢
28 and already hurting damn lol
I Work out every day even if it’s just for 15min , stretch and the most important is to know your limits b/c I gotta be back at work the next day haha(im going on 31 now and still shred !) 🤘💪🤘
The baby monitor part ! I can totally relate 😂🤘😂🤘
That’s because y’all want to wear ballet shoes because of the “board feel”. 0:16
👊👊🔥
Struggling with actually setting up Street lines guess either spend a year dedicate low intensive obstacles
Idk why I watched this I'm only 35 yrs old lol
Too old?! Please stop! I am 56 and still skate and fall hard every session. It’s all about having strong legs. #kneesovertoesguy
I’m 30 and I get back on and off my board I’m happy and blessed that god didn’t let me age like everyone else
My body feels like I’m 20.
You're only as old as you feel.
Yeah... Twenty. 🥹
