For the people reading this who don't know: Don't use nail polish to seal! Nail polish is not made to be permanent. Over time it can yellow, crack or turn tacky. Plus it's way more proportionally expensive than actual craft polish/sealant. Only ever use nail polish if you're just playing around and don't care if your project lasts or is cost efficient.
This is true! If you're going to be selling your pieces I would not advise using nail polish. Unfortunately resin yellows as well over time and I think a lot of glazes do too.
I'm not sure, maybe it depends on the brand. I did cover some little project in nail polish, some I did 3 years ago, they didn't become yellow yet. Maybe they will, I don't know, but for now it works just fine.
I’m old enough to remember getting Shrinky Dinks when they first came out. Finding replacement plastic was infuriating because you had to send the request by mail. I love the fact that my kids (and now my grandkids!) can share in one of my generation’s pastimes.
I like the perminant marker the best because it kind of gives a darker colour to the plastic and the uneven colorig makes it look like an emrode for the green one and a saphire for the blue one :)
I remember my first time using shrinky dinks my mom had found a kit to make Christmas ornament charms so she went full beans and got a teeny tiny silver Christmas tree so we could hang them on it
May I suggest that you use a combination of the permanent markers and the colored pencil? It gives a very bold color and it seems to blend the marker ink better so that you don't have the obvious lines from layers of coloring. It works especially well if you use the colored pencils denmarker and color pencils again in that order, layer upon layer. This may be extra work that may be unnecessary for some. But I love the super saturated color that it gives. BTW awesome videos! This is a first for me on your channel and I plan to subscribe, like, and view more. Until next time, keep on shrinky dinkin' 😆
I use prismacolor premier pencils to color my charms and it is so pigmented that I get a 95% opaque flat and beautiful rich color when it's baked and then I use a quick dry top coat for nails to seal it and they come out great! I would say definitely invest in more expensive supplies because you tend to get much better results but take shortcuts when needed! (like top coat lol)
I've recently been addicted to using watercolor on my shrink plastic because I love the look of them after they're done (//3//) But you always make me want to get a set of pastels~
Oh! I've never seen watercolour on shrinkies! I would love to see what it looks like, because the colour pencil method is just working for me as it smudges and bleed when glazing.
[goo.gl/hfynhf] Those are a few I made though I colored the skin (and the hair on the far right one) by colored pencil since I don't quite like the effect of watercolors for skin. I just like the way I can mesh colors together, it's more organic looking and there isn't a bold line where I change colors. I've managed really nice gradients when I take my time /laugh/ What method do you use for glazing? I haven't had any problems aside from my Ultramarine Prismacolor colored pencil that always bleeds (and experiments with Sharpies)
Aw! They look great and adorable ! The first trial I used resin only , then 2nd time trial i put a coat of acrylic gloss and then resin , but it still bleeds
Ahh! That looks amazing! I've never had problems with bleeding when glazing. I'll have to test out a few sealants and see what the best combination is :D
(//U//) Thank you. Maybe it's the type of colored pencils you're using. Have you tried brushing the shrinky after you shrink them? It could be that excess pigment is still on the top layer? I have a small round makeup brush that I use to dust off the side I colored after shrinking them.
If anyone wants a quick tip, I find coloured pencil works best and then just seal it with some pva glue after baking, it stops the pencil coming off on cloth :O) it’s not the best sealant, but it’s cheap and it works
The Posca and pastel pieces look great! The deep red nail polish is a nice touch, too. Thanks for sharing the idea. ☺️ I had the same issue with copic markers until I discovered they can be used like alcohol inks for abstract pieces 💕
I like using alcohol-based markers, and then lightly "paint" over with a small brush dipped in alcohol. It gives it an almost stain-glass look. I outline AFTER coloring everything in btw. Your outline will get muddled or smeared if you outline first
I can't believe I just found your channel again!! I used to watch your tutorials on uv resin charms and how to make the cabochons!!! So happy you're still making crafts :)
The sound of the permanent markers!😢 Love this video and love you x I like the chalk pastel the best because it gives a really solid colour and it's super cute
u can embossed the shrink plastic and lightly color the raised bumps on the embossed/scratchy side with oil pastels. After shrinking, I put on a coat of glossy accents. It has a stained glass look.
I have never tried these methods, but for all of mine, used water based polyurethane, in spray form. I use the 'Varathane', which can be found on Amazon, and some hardware stores. I also have used it for sealing polymer clay, and it's such a great product. For anyone interested, just be sure to use it outside when sealing your pieces. :)
I have used acetone on #6 plastic and it works but it has to be 100% acetone. I have also used sand paper and that also works great. People on here have said shrink plastic is named shrinky dinks. It's not the only brand. There are other shrink film brands. Using any #6 plastic works just the same.
when you made it in the oven, do you still continue using that oven for cooking food? or do you have different ones? does it leave a smell of plastic on the oven after you shrink the plastic? reply pls
atelierlorien I personally think the Posca chalk marker looked really nice ^^ even though it takes a little while to dry, but if I were to first start making them (which hopefully is soon!) I would start off with the coloured pencils
Thanks for the video! You can get very pale, even pastel results on your shrink plastic pieces if you put just a little pastel chalk on your finger and rub it on the matte or sanded side of plastic before baking.
Actually i think the nail polish ones look the best but i agree, depending on the purpose of the work, the best way of coloring the piece is different :o they all look good!
Is it safe to use shrink plastic in an oven and later cook food in the oven? I am worried that when the plastic is in the oven the markers or plastic itself will release toxic chemicals and those chemicals could end up in food. Should I be worried about that?
ItalianPokeMage I bought a used toaster oven and use it in the garage. Personally I would not cook food in it and use the cheap one just for Shrinky Dinks. Toxic
Do you have a shop where I can go and see better examples of how the different methods look in the final result? I'm working on a graphic novel series and wanting to make charms using #6 plastic because I work at a restaurant and can simply take home food and was the containers, and the tests I've done so far I have used Bic markers, Sharpie markers, and alcohol ink markers and when they come out, you can see the marks from being colored and in some places you can feel it. I've tried multiple layers and the color is definitely better, but not the streak factor, so I'm looking for other methods and so far you're the only one I've found that actually goes in depth on different methods of coloring.
can you colour the shrink plastic with acrylic paint before baking? because i saw some people doing it with posca and they are basically acrylic paint in a pen right?
I love the pastel method! Do you think I could get the same effect with oil pastels? If not, I’m going out right away to buy some chalk pastels~! Update: At Michaels they only had chalk pastel pencils... did not work out as planned. So a tip for everybody: Either don't use chalk pastel pencils or learn how to use them properly, lol
So i paint the back so the black lines on top still show then glue a pin back on it (backside thats been painted) and the pin backs keeps falling off. Its like the acrylic paint isnt sticking to the plastic. Tips?
Never use permanent markers on the printer shrink paper. As soon as the tip of the marker touches the paper it ruins the marker. Ink will not come out and it will never write again. I ruined a few Sharpies doing that. Would love to know the reason it does that.
+sugarcandy654 i press them between the lids from my colored pencils. I used to use CD cases, but the heat warped the case lol I'm planning on making a video on this too soon!
I'm trying to use pencil crayons on clear name brand skrinky dinks, & it's not showing up. I can kind of see it, will the color be bolder, after the shrink, or maybe pencil crayons won't work for clear?
It might get a bit bolder after you shrink it, but I can't imagine it'll be an even coat. I would try sanding it a little bit to help the pigment stick.
I used my prismacolor alcohol based markers one time for a project and the pigment immediately started rubbing off on to my fingers. I thought I should give it some time to dry over night, but it still was rubbing off and it stained my glaze. So yeah I think water based it the way to go if you do use markers but that’s just my experience with it lol
soo... I was pretty curious what you are using in hope you might solve my problems with that but actually... I am still confused and maybe someone here might be able to help. 1.: sharpies for coloring on these scratched plastics - how? when I use it the ink will kinda go its way through these scratches and the outlines won't be clean anymore.... 2.: nail polish as a sealer - I do that too, well I did, I stopped because it will totally mess up sharpies and sometimes it messes up colored pencils too like the colors will simply blend into another and I didn't find a way to stop that..... can someone help me with this one?
Chalk markers > Sharpie because they're not as runny. I've found that markers work better on smooth shrink plastic. It also may be because Sharpies are alcohol based. I always use oil based permanent markers. (I believe they sell oil based sharpies as well...*just googled*)
atelierlorien well that means I should google what chalk markers in Germany are because I didn't really know what they are but guess I should really search for them :) Shrink plastic is worth it, I love crafting with it. Thank you! :3
Hi there, thank you for the video. The chalk pastels you said you bought at the dollar store. Is this a Dollar Tree or a Dollar General? I've done shrinky dinks for many years. As a kid of course always back then with colored pencils. And then I've done them over the years with my kids. Now I'm on to my grandchildren ☺️ someone on a video I can't remember where I saw it, said that permanent markers rub off. I don't remember that happening. Lorien's Craft Box Good to know. But what I mean is the short colored pencils you used say watercolor pencils on the box. Im wondering if you had wet them how that would do.

Wow, I didn't know that. It sounds super inconvenient! It makes me appreciate my dollar store even more!
Lorien's Craft Box XD
I’ve found using thick Posca pens is the fastest and most solid, as color pencil is quite time consuming when doing large areas. Love this video!
Most expensive too 🥲
I like the perminant marker the best because it kind of gives a darker colour to the plastic and the uneven colorig makes it look like an emrode for the green one and a saphire for the blue one :)

The chalk and acrylic were new for me and pastel I add resin on top to make it glossy love to use color pencils ❤️🦋

Hi sis Should plastic has number 6 on the back to work? Because i tried number 1 and it didn't work under the heat ( in the oven )
What happens if you paint with acrylic paint before baking?
Acrylic paint is essentially liquid plastic so I'm going to assume that it's gonna burn and smell bad while being baked
Can you use regular colored pencils or do they have to be water colored?
Can I use hairdryer for this craft?
i always use colored pencils to do mine :)
where did you get the shrink plastic
