  • This was my first visit to the Village of Mata Ortiz & what an amazing experience it was! I've been collecting this magnificent art form for about 20 years and visiting the Village to purchase pottery directly from the artists had always been a dream of mine.
We got extremely luck to have met Patty Topel & Toby Frank who were there purchasing pottery for their store Kachina House in Sedona Arizona. These two ladies were kind enough and generous enough to share their time, knowledge & passion for Mata Ortiz Pottery with us. They introduced us to the Village as well as too many amazing artists, which we are truly grateful for.
I hope you enjoy this video & I will be posting many more shortly!

i love watching this clip. the artist is amazing and humble. i would love to see a current video of the artist. his lifes journey to today, 2017. and yes the women did help him/coax him along in his speech but they should have let him finish most of his own sentences. they remind me of my old english teachers that are always correcting their students. at some point they did become annoying. it's a lesson to "EVERYONE OF US" to have patience and tolerance.

One thing they didnt show here, the painting on the oot can be polished again so the finish is smooth as well, this doesnt make sense for the black/grey finish, as the roughness makes the pattern stand out more. There is a problem however, as polishing the paint with the stone would just destroy it, but they apply a small amount of soap (traditional hard soap, not liquid soap) which allows for the painted patterns to be burnished.

To those who say that he isn't getting enough money for these, he probably isn't but as beautiful as his work is the market value is low even in the US or Europe. I doubt it has anything to do with the people making the film. More to do with cheap imports and IKEA! :-P

You can buy directly from the potters homes as well as a few galleries in town. US currency is welcomed and you don't need to know Spanish. I recommend that you contact Pablo Carrillo at mataortiztours.com. These tours are a great way to get your feet wet and introduced to the Village and its fabulous artists! Enjoy your adventure.

Giselle Bustamante I lived around 40 minutes away from mataortiz for about 10 years. I met a couple of persons who do this very type of pottery for a living and I gotta say they are quite humble in the way some of them live but let me tell you that they run a very good business exporting their art. But at the same time they make a lot from tourists who visit their doorstep. In less words: they do sell them to the people mentioned in previous comments but they don't sell them for cheap. Oh no! It's quite far from being cheap stuff.
