A lesson in patience, artistry and dedication, in keeping a rich , ancient pottery tradition alive. Much respect for Mr. Tony Soares ,for preserving the ancient clay pottery traditions of his people , with such passion.
Tony Soares is an amazing potter, artist, craftsman and teacher. We supplied clay to him for a short time, nice red clay from Sage, the pottery he made from it was amazing!
I bought this dvd in 2021. Probably the best native pottery and firing dvd I have come across. So grateful to have found this timeless film! When it autoplayed on my youtube playlist, I actually didn't realize it was a film at first, I thought it was just a short episode of a tv program. After watching the whole thing, I knew I needed to own it for myself as a great keepsake and reference material. The soundtrack is lovely too! Everyone did amazing work on this production. Hope to see more material from them again.
Anyone else marvel at how he stayed so clean, sitting out in the desert, digging/working clay, grinding iron oxide and painting, etc etc? I'd have looked like Pigpen from Charlie Brown about an hour in, I'm certain...
You'd be surprised how neat a person can remain under their circumstances..especially if someone is an expert at their job! I was a Janitor for YEARS and I never came home dirty or all messed up. I worked very hard. It's a physically demanding job, especially if you're a Woman, like me!
The narrator is Anna La Cazio - diva vocalist from 80’s band Cock Robin. She is one of Rock n Rolls most beautiful songstresses ever to rock a stage. I’m a 53 year old indigenous man from Aotearoa New Zealand - I recognised her voice from the other side of forever lost in an unrequited 80’s teenage crush. Here in the pacific pottery is found across the expanse of the Lapita pottery cultures. Here in Aotearoa we were a culture who did not possess a pottery tradition as it was lost as a practice during the great star navigation migrations here to the end of the earth a thousand years ago. While we did not possess a pottery tradition we did employ clay as a food and also as a fired substance used to line our latrines and our hearths in our villages. We also employed clay in our dye’s and in our body facial paints as kōkōwai. All my relations All my love to hearing sweet Anna’s voice again albeit surprisingly in this documentary... Love never dies ... it’s heartbeat is forever imprinted in the clay earth, fire, water and wind ever caressing the dreams of our AnceStars whose prayers sing to us tremblingly as answers to life’s greatest mysteries of living, loving and creativity.
Watching it you could tell he truly loves making it. You could just sense the good vibes he puts into it. After the pot was all done and he showed it, It resembled a lady bug with her wings open on one side and closed on the other..... I'm glad to hear that you are passing on the teachings of your grandma and therefore your ancestors..
This month, I've seen 3 ways in which people work with clay to make bowls: the wheel, manually free hand (Arica, no form) and now this, a base put to form the new pot. Amazing man's ingenuity with resources on hand and the imagination behind what beauty emerges from it all.
What a wonderful film showing your spiritual process of making such a beautiful pot. Love the space that you work in amongst the ancient rocks. May we all live in peace. Thank you. Bev.J - New Zealand
Tony, this is by far the best video & tribute to all tribes & clans , as you & your associates have produced a timeless classic! Muchos Koodos to your love of your people & your love for Clay & Pottery , you & yours rank among the best ! I only have two thumbs- but I’ll give you 4, 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 !
Thank you for sharing this priceless works of art. I am sure that your ancestors are quite proud of what you have done with the craft of those before you and I hope that it will continue for generations to come.
WOW! NO TENGO PALABRAS SUFICIENTES PARA DESCRIBIR TAN MARAVILLOSO ARTE, A SIDO UN HONOR VER TODO EL PROSESO DE TAN BELLO TRABAJO, FELICIDADES ,Y QUE NO SE PIERDA LA SABIDURIA Y ENSEÑANZA DE NUESTROS ANTEPASADOS, GRACIAS DE NUEVO ,POR CONTINUAR CON EL LEGADO DE SU ABUELITA, DDE SU GENTE QUE ES MI GENTE, LOS AMO, MIS HERMANOS NATIVOS, GRACIAS POR EXISTIR.
Spirit is celebrated here and has produced an object that retains that energy. Tony's life is marked by these rituals taking the earth, air, water and fire and his own element leaving behind the experience embodied in the vessel.
Heute habe ich zum . mal diese einmalige Kunst Angesehen. Eine Ordnung erster Klasse. Es kommt mir alles bekannt vor und gleichzeitig ganz neu. Vielen Dank Ursula Görgen ❤
Wonderful video, thank you for sharing your knowledge, goes to show you don't need all the best tools in the world, just a desire and knowledge, may this tradition long continue.
fascinating how the damp clay resembles human or animal flesh as it ripples when its being forged into shape, it must take a lot of sensitive skill to not ruin it by being heavy handed. This potter has relentless patience
Muy buen documental, es importante que toda cultura que identifica a un pueblo, se revolorice con sus tradiciones y costumbres. Conocimientos que no deben perderse! !!
The fact that you could do this large beautiful pot in one sitting and not have it slump, break, tear, etc is amazing to me and such an exquisite form. You rock!
This subject matter is very informative, thanks. I've never seen clay being processed like that on a metate, although it seems to work well. I always thought they were only used in food prep. Also interesting to see him extracting clay from a flat plain. Usually you see someone taking it from a dirt bank of some sort. Interesting also that he doesn't seem to need to sieve, strain, or slurry his clay in any way. It seems to be very fine particles naturally. And finally, I often see stones like the one he is using on the inside of the pot and have always wondered if they were some kind of tool and how they were used. Somewhere I read/heard that they were used in games, but I see now how perfect they were for clay processing and potmaking.
For a short time I worked for Glen Apple man. He is a Ceramicist by trade. What a wonderful artist and all around pleasant man! His partner Harry Zehrler or Zerler
treated us all so well! It was a small company. The studio was this gigantic loft in an old industrial building in Union City, NJ. My job there was to glaze the the already baked item. Then my close friend Debbie Winfield, would add the luster. That's chemical and mineral based and the cookie jar is put back into the kiln again. Poof! You have a shiny new ceramic cookie jar! What wonderful times we had. Paul Napoli was one name I remember..the other two girls' names slip my mind..
I have watched Your video before, Your pots/ceramics are very Beautiful, I know I could not produce a huge vessel like that by hand, not that cylindrical, Love your flute music and drumming, just about put me in a trance, Thank you for your video
Tony, you are a true master of the clay. I watched you at the 2015 SWKC and was astounded at how YOU make it look so easy. I did try pottery once and was completely intimidated by the clay when it was in the elastic form!! I am honored to have met you, to have watched you create, and to have witnessed your humbleness in life. You demonstrate what is good on this great earth. I do hope we cross paths again! Arturo
GourdsbyArturo: Ramirez what a beautiful comment, this is how to be sensitive to Arts & grateful to who make it without giving importance to his origins or religion or sex. Peace & Love from Algeria.
THANKS TONY IT IS A JOY TO WATCH YOU , FIRST TIME I SAW YOUR ARTISTRY ON PUGET SOUND FLINTKNAPPING SIGHT , I AM FLINTKNAPPER AND JUST DO A FEW POTS AND PIPES,FOR SHOW WITH THAT, BUT I DO MAKE NATIVE CLAY, OR TRY , AND TRY TO WORK IN THE OLD WAYS OF IDAHO INDEAN S... THANKS ROB

La verdad Sorprendente el Vídeo de 1:17:37 todo un proceso para que tenga forma el Cántaro como lo hacian los Antiguos Nativos y la decoración Del pintado Hermoso. Buen trabajo para el maestro Ceramista .
What a peaceful Sunday here in Italy, watching you and hand crocheting my sweater.. Truly enjoyed it and appreciate it! Love to see creativity making in any form, sort of things.. so inspiring! Btw by you not saying a word made it even more interesting?! Nice video ..
Totally going to try this! But I'll use a banding wheel so I don't have to orbit the pot. Technically that would make it onggi, I suppose. But they're both slapware made from local clay.
Realiza todo el proceso... tiene la alfarerìa en sus genes... està en el lugar indicado... trabaja con los materiales del entorno geogràfico... ...!FELICITACIONES!...
