@@thomas.nd2 I was around your age when I wanted a MR2. I've been collecting hot wheels since elementary. Didn't discover the MR2 'til middle school. I'm 19 now and own one, best feeling ever.
I liked it better when mr2s were forgotten about I was buying these cars left and right for peanuts when I got out of high school in 2007 I’ve owned 5 sw20 mr2s. Then one Honda guy swapped a k series on one and it put these cars in the spotlight. Now there all over UA-cam and the value has nearly doubled it seems.
Tom Higgins why not the 4th or 5th gen 3S-GTE swap or the K20/K24 swap? I personally have a low mileage 1991 NA which I plan on eventually swapping the transmission (it’s an automatic) hopefully for a turbo transmission for better reliability and higher horsepower handling and a budget built gen 5 for ~450-550 whp on e85.
Just like the idea of putting a newer toyota motor into one so it would still be decent on fuel and not break speed limits every time you wanted fun. If I was after a tuner car the 3sgte is awesome
I miss my MR2 Turbo. Also those T-tops; it’s too bad no manufacturer offers them anymore. They’re the best of both worlds between a convertible and a hard top.
Gotta love the SW20. Sadly the prices are shooting up. Wish some manufacturer continued to make an affordable MR car. Those T-Tops and the flip up headlamps... they'll make a comeback one day.
I have a blue 91 MR2 non turbo t top 5 speed with 17 in Wheels all around. Unfortunately it's been sitting awhile since I had a overheating problem and haven't been able to afford to delve into it. It makes me sad because it was such a fun car to drive. I do hope to revive it one day. I guess if I ever get a chunk of money that I don't have to have I would like to swap steering wheel for a modern Toyota steering wheel with an airbag that won't kill you and swap the engine for a modern Toyota 4 cylinder. The stock naturally aspirated engine new only made around a hundred and forty horsepower which is adequate for the weight of the vehicle but fairly anemic by today's standards. And of course an upgrade of that magnitude would require additional upgrades to the cooling system Etc. Fun to dream about but it was a great car as is. Peace
Wow you guys are doing video at Bear Mountain now. That's awesome!! You should do a video at the Wednesday night meets there. If you want to do a 5 things to know about the Subaru STi let me know
As far as hoses go, calendar age is a bigger degrading factor the miles. So even though it has low miles, it has many years for the hoses to degrade and fail. More so than age, soft composes in the power train (rubber hoses, o-rings, oil seals, etc) are more effected by the number of full heat cycles. With this car having so few miles, I will guess that the number of full heat cycles is low for such an old car. Perhaps the hoses are still in good condition
I love my mr2 turbo, so much room and space. mines a engine swap so it still has the N/A lid on so people are shocked when you put your foot down and its gona hahahaha. Nice vid
Me too! Guess I’ll go down to the garage to commune with mine and install the toys that amazon and ebay brought me this week! Why would you ever sell yours?!? The ST-205 WRC and the LS400 on either side of mine aren’t getting sold either.these cars don’t die and they’re so cheap to maintain I can’t imagine ever getting rid of them. One day I’ll bring home a JZA-80 and a TRD Tundra to park next to them and complete my dream set.
The windshield trim on this MR2 is definitely aftermarket. Which usually only means that the windshield has already been replaced. And on a 13,000 mile MR2? I Don't understand why they didn't go OEM on this part to retain its purity. Must've sucked to get nailed by something at such low miles regardless.
Rookie To Pro These cars aren't cool enough in stock form(in my view) to leave alone. Not in the looks are performance department. Of course stock would be better for resale. But these cars will likely not be worth more than inflation adjusted prices for 75 years... So to me, it makes no sense to not have fun with a car like this. Supras are only slightly better than inflation adjusted value.
Just a heads up for anyone trying to figure out if it's a Turbo or N/A, you can also check the Dashboard and see if the rev limiter is set to 9k RPM and has a Turbo LED. This doesn't really help with identifying an MR2 when at like a parking lot, but it can help if you're buying one from a dealer and need to tell if between it. Also works the same way with the JDM MR2 Turbos
Edit: Nvm I read your statement wrong. You are, of course, correct and he is wrong. Most casual owners don’t know the history outside of their market. Apologies, sir. That’s a Gen 3 3S-GTE engine (‘94-99) you’re thinking of but the generation of the car remains the same (Considered a mid model “Facelift”). The first generation 3S-GTE only came on the 4th Gen Celica. The 4th and 5th Gen 3S-GTE only came in the Caldina GT4. The 3rd Gen MR2 is the Spyder or MRS (2000-2005).
SPOOLINMETAL The ‘91-92 isn’t dangerous - it’s just a more pure driver’s sports car than the 93+. My friend’s 93 Turbo feels neutered compared with my ‘91 Turbo. Powersteering on an MR2 just feels wrong, as well. I’ve converted mine to manual and the communication is just worlds apart.
Pretty much all cars from that era cam with spare tires. And a little person in a small car will of course say its spacious. And nobody makes a car like that now . . . ? Porsche Cayman, Porsche Boxster, Lotus Evora, Lotus Exige, Lotus Elise, Alfa Romeo 4C
Yeah wait, that’s a really shitty list you came up with. The MR2 was marketed similarly to the Miata in that it was supposed to offer cheap fun. Nothing about the cars you listed is cheap, and I own an 03 986 Boxster, so I’ve got some experience with Porsche specifically.
This car could have been so much better with the engine in the front a bigger trunk and a targa top instead of a t top I own a Honda del sol and it’s so much better it’s targa top front engined and the back window goes down plus the targa top is an actual roof not glass
I’m pretty sure you’re advocating razing the prices. I mean unless you’re about to sell one. Perhaps you meant “stop raising the prices of cars!”? “Razing” means to chop down to almost nothing. A razor would be used to accomplish this in many situations.
It's crazy to see this car with antique license plates on it.... As a kid this was a dream car for me. Time flies!

"The turbo badge"

20 years later and this is still the most fun car I ever owned. Loved the MR2

Tom Moniz yeah I know kind of frustrating in a way, but also it has got a lot more people making custom parts for them now. Still cheapish in NZ.
I know ive wanted one for the so long finaly got my license and went looking and couldnt find any for what it used to be even bad ones
just bought an NA for $3k after looking for about a year. Hella miles tho 225k
@@trv88r I've been thinking of buying an NA myself, cuz all the Turbos cost too much. Do you think it's worth it or should I save up for a turbo
9third no doubt it’s pretty slow, but i’ve yet to take it to the twisties. As a daily tho it leaves me wanting more
Love sw20 mr2's, I'd love to v6 swap a naturally aspirated one to get myself a budget lotus evora
Tom Higgins yup same plan bud

One of the greatest roadsters ever. Take a clean one over any Boxster, MX-5 or Z3. 💁♂️
It's not a roadster. T-tops =/= roadster.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials it's close enough lol. Absolutely competes with them. The MR2 that came after, was, after all.
They are going for the same price too

Is it not a legal requirement that cars have to have a spare?
There is a difference between a full size spare and a temporary doughnut tire.
Tiger800 XCx a full sized spare v a biscuit was never mentioned in the video so I don't see the point of you trying to bring it into the equation.
