Neighbour had a red targa turbo in the mid 90s and I loved it. Awesome cars. This one looks good in white. Love non-linear power delivery with the lag/push from the turbo.
A friend has one of these with the 3sge and on launch it breaks your neck. 0-20 feels like an instant teleportation. Great power to weight and feels quite sporty, however it understeers really badly, so I am not particularly fond of the way it goes around corners. This probably could be fixed with with tyre/suspension tune, but I am quite afraid of the snap oversteer. Id rather stick to FF or FR layouts.
Never really saw a lot of these growing up, I think most owners normally kept these stock. Nearly one of those forgotten models like the Mitsubishi FTO
I owned 2 SW20's before kids and they were fantastic super reliable cars. I discovered snap oversteer which was interesting on a busy public road. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat although certain parts are impossible to find these days.
ive always seen the SW20 Mr2 as more of a budget Japanese Lotus, rather than a Ferrari. I think it resembles an 80s Esprit' more than the 348/355 its often compared to, which came out after the Sw20 did. But your analysis of the car is spot on. its a great all rounder gt/sportscar.
Hey!! First comment...is that a thing? Love your vids. I'm only at 1.11 so deducing the rest will be as cool as the...1.11 I've watched...see Sarah -n - Tuned (older ones) for the rebuild of hers. Sweet little cars. Drive safe mate.
Gen 2 3sgte👌 the gen 5 from caldina gt4 is the holy grail 3sgte in the states they import them for their mr2s, would love to find a manual body mr2 to put my spare 4th gen in, or maybe a rav4😂
Would be glad to know where to get the label / badge on the engine which says 2000 twin turbo entry 😅 I hv a Rev 5 also but cannot find any where selling this label anymore
The worlds most affordable DEATH TRAP, literally snap oversteer into the coffin... My friend had a built MR2, we went through every dam suspension variable, coilovers, arms, alignments, tyre and wheel setup.. still the same results, death trap at the limits. They just snap back and forth, my friend slit his elbow open on the window from how violent the snaps are... its a whole new level of death lol
Been daily driving mine for over 14 years now and it hasn't bitten me. Sounds like your mate was lifting off the throttle and not understanding the weight transfer characteristics of a rear engine car. The fact that you said snap oversteer and not lift off oversteer sort of points that way. These cars will very quickly show you the limits of the driver before you reach the limits of the car. That being said I avoid driving mine in the wet, then I would agree they want to kill you!
Also known to try kill a few people in its time, the MR2! Nothing like that MR lift-off snap-oversteer in the wrong hands. Wicked cars but ngl, I’d be a bit of a nana if I was pushing one of these through windy roads.
4:35 "that when you put your foot down, the yaris next to you still goes faster"
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHA
Hehe yeah that bit stood out like a sore thumb.
O/100 km..7sec...mr2 156 cv
There are really amazing conversion kits for these cars. In the states a common swap is 2GR-FE swap. Its lighter than the 2.0 and makes way more power
Hey Vikkstar123 I’m a really big fan
Yup a 2gr one would be really cool
There was one of those for sale in chch recently. Amazing car. Sounded fantastic
@@christopherjohnston6343 That would have gone for a bit of $$
@@Vikturus22 I think it was listed for 25k. Seemed pretty reasonable considering the custom engineering
I own a 1992 mr2 originally 3sge. Swapped it to a 3.0 v6 and its a whole new beast
Very cool

Yeah it’s quite fun
coolest car ever
They are very cool

Yeah tbh me too, it understeered super bad onto that on-ramp and really caught me off guard
There is nothing weirder than watching you hop on the motorway just a few hundred metres from where I'm eating lunch
Hahah

I dunno about forgotten, definitely see more mr2’s than gtos
@@KiwiCarLife oh yeah probably more common in NZ. Definitely hardly see them here in Sydney

Yeah snap oversteer is a classic haha
ah yes, the classic Te Irirangi drive straight :)
Indeed
Beautiful car! Great vid, keep it up.
Thanks man

Yeah true the Esprit does look quite similar

Nice man
Down in Christchurch there's an Mr2 with a k20 swap. The best of both worlds if you ask me!
That’s very cool
_Very nice design thats aged extremely well. It would be a good match up against the Euro R🤷🏻♂️_
In terms of speed yeah I guess quite similar
Loved the vid! ive got an 1996 na 3sge celica that doesnt go as good as that mr2 does 😂
Haha still cool tho
nice video 👍🤙
Thanks
Ur such a chad bro entertaining af
Also hope you werent too affected by the cyclone
Thanks man and yeah nah I’m all good
I am waiting for more interesting cars from the era :) keep up good job kivi
Thanks
That intro was great, really wish toyota would bring back Mr Two
Would be cool, there are rumours
i remember someone nicked one of these in the UK. There was a police chase and they couldnt catch it
Oh dang
My favorite mr2, is the 86' one
Ehh they’re too boxy for me I like these
I'm guessin you still like the accord better 🤣🤣? ..... Just kidding😅, great job on the video.
Yeah tbh i do HAHA
Haha $46000 for sale in trade me! Ferrari be a better option
Just about yeah
Just like a motorbike, drive it with respect in the corners

*cough* Honda NSX 😎
Yea it's NSX
True both the nsx and mr2 are very ferrariesque

I love how @HooviesGarage F355 is now an internet MEME for Ferrari car fires :)
Oh dear HAHA
Hello kiwicarlife would you be able to do a euro r cl7 vs a corolla sportivo just curious how a corolla can hold against a euro in a roll race.
We don’t get Corolla sportivos here
MR2 still spanks!
Absolutely
What engine would u swap in if u are in the US?
2GR
0:33, east tamaki rd?
Yup
Another bangggga! I need to stop commenting on every video 🤣 #kiwicarlifeaddicts
Haha cheers man
There's loads of 355 replicas based on mk2's here in the UK. Some even have 2GR-FE's chucked in them.
Oh that is actually quite cool
i pref the na version tin top stripped out free flow exhaust loud in fun and pretty quick
Fair enough
What kind of watch are you wearing?
Casio ediface

Yeah as with a lot of Toyota engines they keep improving them and the last gens are often the best
Wait is this the one on trade me?
Yep
What’s the 0-60?
8s ish?
@@KiwiCarLife that’s slow for a car with 240hp and under 3k lbs

Guaranteed your friend didn’t get a suspension geometry correcting kit - mine literally doesn’t break traction going 40 mph on 180 degree hairpins

Yeah haha me too
Lotus actually
Not really
@RexH
😥I miss his MR2
Good car
When is it the mr2 vs the accord 🤣
Haha not really comparable…
