Having movie commentary Monday released on a Tuesday is weird for me. Yes Australia. We love a time zone difference. We love time zones so much we have five different ones within just the country it's self.
Unpopular opinion time: I have always thought that this movie is the *perfect* example of how you can take the most cliche story arcs, and STILL turn them into masterpieces of art, with the right director and the right filmmakers. YES, everyone knows the plotline of the protagonist having a change of heart and switching sides. YES, everyone is familiar with the protagonist changing because of love. YES, everyone has seen the money-and-power-seeking military leader villain before. But you can either describe those plotlines and story arcs as "cliche"... or as foundational. Classic. Timeless. Well-known *AND well-loved.* It all depends on how good the rest of the movie is, and how well it WORKS with those classic story arcs. And I will *always* stand by the opinion that this movie captured that flawlessly, and is a classic and *gorgeous* movie. There, I've said my peace. *Somebody* had to give an opinion from the *perspective* of a story-teller.
I agree as a writer. How you execute things REALLLLLLY make a world of difference. It's the small subtle things that make up a story usually. Also cliches are cliches for a reason. Well liked and well tested.
I totally agree, sometimes old tropes and clichés are the building blocks of great stories. Like you said it depends on how well you work with it and the things you add to embellish the narrative

I have a fun fact about this movie that I learnt in film school. James Cameron told the production company that he would need a huge ass budget for this movie ($240 million), and told them it would be a one-off. The movie made so much revenue at the box office that Cameron pulled out from 20th Century Fox and was able to fund the remaining four Avatar movies out of his back pocket. He said he did research about it so that his jokes would work, when he said 3 years and 16 years he was joking. Apparently he loves being made fun of 😂
15:22 wish he watched the full cut. He complains about lack of character development and that they dont show him hunting from the air where literally in the full cut they show both of those things. Iike showing graces connection more with the Na'vi by showing us her school and some extra dialogue cut out. The hunting scene Jake and Tsu tey were the only ones that actually killed animals while flying showing both jakes skills increasing and showing the relationship between them mature. The extra 15 mins or so in the full cut is worth the watch
Nah, it just looks trashy. Even James Cameron said about the females in it "oh they have to have t1ts" or something. Too much unnecessary nudity that adds nothing, bad quality animation and a meh plotline.

@@AsylumSaint No I literally thought that when I first seen it in theaters. I watched Pocahontas a lot growing up and noticed the similar plots immediately. It's not unique to Dylan to notice that. It's blatant.
@@AsylumSaint Please refer to my original comment where I specify that it is like a SCI FI version of Pocahontas. The character archetypes are pretty much the same and the basic plot where the aliens are like tribal people and seen as savages while the white guy comes and learns they are the true savages then must turn his back on his own kind and they do not take kindly of that. I could go on with similarities, but truthfully, I really don't care to because that would require rewatching that movie and I will pass. You are getting way too worked up over an extremely average movie. I don't hate it. I don't love it. It is the epitome of completely average.

I SWEAR it came out in 2011-12, not 2009.
The amazing thing is not only the plot, scenery, prosthetics, gc, etc but the fact that they MADE a language for this movie. It’s honestly so cool
"It came out in 2009... and its 2019... it's already been 16 years!"
Dylan be living in 2025
Watching the deterioration of Tsu’tey go all the way down to Two Chains had me in tears 😂😂
with a z lmao
Dylan doing math is such a great example of why I type two times two into my calculator during a test.
The extra 15 mins or so in the full cut is worth the watch
no one ever:
dylan: calling tsu'tey , 2chainz lol
That's his new nickname now, I'm gonna call Tsu'tey that every time I watch Avatar from now on lol.
Don't even start with that.

I liked Avatar, and it kinda breaks my heart every time people go way too hard on it. It is almost fashionable to hate it at this point.
Nah, it just looks trashy. Even James Cameron said about the females in it "oh they have to have t1ts" or something. Too much unnecessary nudity that adds nothing, bad quality animation and a meh plotline.
@@vividnora799 It's immodest. Depraved. Animalistic. But sure, I'm the weird one, pervert.

@@yiyangremus are you 56 years old its literally not that deep
@@yiyangremus you’re either an old lady or a really young child who doesn’t understand much. there’s nothing wrong with the movie and it’s not “immodest” it’s just life. and as the other person said, it really isn’t that deep. also the movie is rated PG-13 and since it came out in 2009 some of the viewers (at the time) were young teens and even kids yet no one, but you, has a problem with it.
when he kept calling him “daddy” omfg i died every time 27:31 was the best
This movie is just a high budget sci-fi version of Pocahontas. I am constantly distracted by that.
There’s plenty of movies out there with similar versions of Pocahontas. It ain’t special and Avatar is honestly more interesting to watch.
Literally everything from this movie is a stolen trope
AsylumSaint thats what the movie is based on, yes but the actual events have nothing similar to what happened and tbh if ppl keep saying they’re the same it’s only hurting our past as there was no “good ending” irl

I’m gonna take a wild guess Dylan failed math class 👀💀
The funniest thing is that the main character wouldn’t be able to light a match in that world couse it doesn’t have oxygen.
No, there is oxygen. It's just that there is also a high concentration of carbon dioxide, which is the reason why humans die so quickly without their breathing masks.
"The atmosphere of Pandora does have enough oxygen for humans (21%-22%), but too much carbon dioxide (16%-18%)."
Honey, do your research. Pandora does have oxygen. You need atleast 16% oxygen to sustain a fire btw :)
