Running my first marathon - what did I learn?

  • On New Years Eve 2018 I ran the Flitch Way Marathon in Essex. I was running my first marathon and I had no idea what to expect from the experience, my legs or my mind! It really was unknown territory.
The aim for me was to alleviate my own fears before the London Marathon in April. And I also thought I could alleviate other peoples fears if they saw what I went through in an honest and (hopefully) relatable account via the trusty GoPro.
If you're training for your first marathon or even just thinking about it, this vlog could help you understand what happens during a marathon, how to get through it and how to prepare for it.
While I realise not everyone is the same or responds the same, there will hopefully be something for everyone to take away from this.
Please enjoy my pain in the hope it will lessen yours. The experience helped me hugely. Full steam ahead London! Get yourself subscribed and follow the journey.

Just ran my first marathon with my cousin, and I do agree to the fact that after the first 30k it starts to be a battle of mind and will-power. The day after is absolutely the worst I have ever felt in my legs, and surprisingly also my shoulders are sore. But happy that I could overcome it and prove my mom wrong. Side note: I trained up for the marathon for about three months until I was injured for a month up to the marathon. The week before the marathon I ran a 5k and a 10k and believed in myself I could do it. The longest I have ever run before was a halfmarathon. Afterward I have not been feeling anything to the injury which was my biggest concern. I also broke my shin for like a year and a half, so for me to run a marathon was a big accomplishment - I am so proud of myself. My running time was 3h 45m 7s. Congratulations on your first ever marathon!

Ha ha yes I know what you mean about the shoulders too. The worst pain I’ve ever had was from a half marathon and it was in the shoulders. No idea why 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 well done on the time too. That’s a great time. Are you planning on more?

I am going to run the marathon in Copenhagen next year - my cousin and I were supposed to run it this year but due to COVID-19 it was canceled, and we both got a ticket for next year. I am glad I’ve got the experience of running a marathon now and now I am just looking forward to it and really excited about it. Now I also have a time to beat.

This is SO fab!!! Loved watching every minute and looking forward to seeing the next ones up. . . Mary has just gone next level with her running too. I have booked my first marathon in Rotterdam (flat woo) in April as a knee jerk reaction to being signed up to Gurnsey Ultra in May... I'd love to hear more about what food you have and how that works for your races - especially gels etc as I am a little scared to go down that track (and destroy my teeth?).
    Big kudos to you ben!

Omg this is awesome!! I vlogged my 2018 London Marathon and honestly, I think vlogging distracted me from the heat and pain haha. AMAZING!

This Messy Happy I’m not sure I can you much advice! It was the fittest I’ve ever been and did it in 3:28. You look much more ready than I was! I also didn’t run more than 15 miles leading up to it where as my friends did 22 and 23 miles in training. Although that said I ran it faster than them 😂 but watching this, I think you’ll smash London because the support (even from random people) is immense. You’ll love it. Tower Bridge is amazing.

One of the best Marathon vlogs I've come across after watching a fair few recently. Signed up for my first Marathon in August, very excited. Hoping to aim for sub 3:30:00, which I think with a few months of training I can reach after doing a 1:38:48 half last month. Good luck in London :)

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  5 років тому

Thank buddy, that means a lot! What marathon are you doing? With a 1:38 you should be fine. It’s the body (muscles) that gives out before the engine (heart and lungs) so make sure you do loads of s&c. That’s my biggest lesson so far! Worth it’s weight in gold 👍🏻

    Great time - well done!
By the bye: I agree with you - with no little determination, training + appropriate weight control + doctors say-so if you think it is necessary - achieving a marathon run is possible. For most of us 3.18 or so won't be possible (or even necessary) but crossing the finishing line then having your 'treat' (coffee, shandy(!?)...) will be memorable.
I stopped smoking and drinking in my mid 50s. Started running and gymming, first marathon 2012 I have now run 80(sic) or so - including some short(sic) ultras. If I can achieve that then - really- other middle aged folk can!

Ahh I see. I’m not really a time guy. I had a rough idea of what I can do as I have been running for a loooong time before that. So I really just wanted to experience an official marathon before London to see how it all felt when it’s a race 😊

No mate, you had that high heart rate because you had a coffe before. Really, why would you need a coffe? You don't need to stimulate yourself with nothing from exterior when you do this kind of activity.. Just run for a bit and you will find a lot of energy sources within yourself after a few miles.

Not true, Bodhi (my favourite name by the way) - coffee will have had a part to play but excitement and race head were other parts. And as for the why you should have coffee, that’s easy. 1) it is the best legal performance enhancer there is, fact. And I wanted to do well. 2) I freaking love coffee so if you think I’m not going to have one you’re as mad as a hatter!! Each to their own, my friend 👍🏻

Do not take my comment in a negative manner my friend, what I meant to express from my own experience is that once you stop stimulating yourself with coffe, your heart beat comes a bit lower, and everything becomes more natural... I used to love coffe, just like you, but I got to a point where I had to realise that it's not necessary to consume it in order to be alert and energised.. Personally I feel amazing after a run, first thing in the morning, and that's my coffe for the day, especially that I don't have an energy crush 5-6 hours later.
      Peace out! ✌️

Not at all taken in a negative way, buddy 😊 I get your point about coffee but I do only allow myself one once a day and it’s usually after I’ve been running anyway so I’m already the high. It’s more the taste than what it does for me. I switch between caffeine and decaf as well just to keep the body guessing. But yes, I agree, true energy comes from the running experience 👍🏻
