Ponderosa Twins Plus One was a Soul music group from 1970 that released songs such as "Bound" that went on to be sampled by artists like Kanye West and Tyler the Creator. This is as much information that I could find on this group, lots of media about PT+1 has been lost to this day.
This was one of the most interesting topics I have ever covered. I'm really starting to enjoy doing video essays rather than gameplay videos. I'm glad I can share my content with you guys! :)

To this day there is only one photo of Ricky Spicer as an adult on the internet ever since he filled the lawsuit against Kanye West. But other than that there is absolutely nothing else. I remember there was one UA-cam video where someone uploaded the entire Ponderosa Twins album and in the comment someone said: “I wonder where they shot the album cover.” Then Ricky Spicer commented back and said: “We took that photo in downtown Cleveland at what used to be ‘Mall C.” and that was it. He didn’t upload anything he had a few playlist with videos related to politics on his channel. But that video of the Ponderosa Twins album was taken down, I can’t find it anymore.
This whole situation is really eerie in my opinion. It’s crazy how much mystery has surrounded this group and the only true evidence of their existence are those two pictures and their one album. This is probably another case of “lost media.” There are probably more pictures out there somewhere but just almost impossible to find, unless if the creator itself publishes them.

Some Silent films got lost in a fire - odd that they did not have a back up storage for that storage.
The fountain they took a picture in front of is Hanna fountains in Cleveland, no longer there.. but it’s so nostalgic feeling when you look at old photos and realize these people were there at one point in time, they were standing right there..
@@row3n I remember long time ago, I searched up the band and came across an old photo of the band on stage. From what I remembered the photo wasn't really restored, probably it was just one of those 35mm photos left to be trashed.
These guys had serious potential in the R&B and Soul genre… just by listening to this master piece you can tell.
Ricky Spicer was the +1 of the group, not a twin.
The 2 sets of twins are Alvin & Alfred Pelham (both deceased).
And the Gardners (one of the Gardners is the one who went to prison in 1980 for aggravated murder)

After googling it, Ricky spicer is still alive and doing fine, both the pelham twins are deceased, and after searching ohio prison records it also turns out that both the Gardner twins are in prison for murders and other charges.

Maybe a little something to help cheer this thing up a little. Ricky Spicer did not lose the lawsuit he filed. West and Rhino and the other parties settled out of court for, of course, an undisclosed sum. Spicer then dropped the lawsuit. So he did receive compensation from West's extensive use of his original lead vocals. That's good!

You're welcome! Not to get too technical, but he didn't win the lawsuit, nor did he lose it. Settling out of court just means they made a private, off-the-record agreement for an amount he would be paid; the suit is dropped and no one goes on record as having done anything wrong.
But personally, it was indeed a win for Spicer!

How could you call them a one hit wonder and cite "Bound" as their only hit when "You Send Me" scored higher on the charts? It was an even more unique song, rivaling only with Rochelle Farrell, for originality of interpretation of the classic. I actually liked (and, as a deejay, played) both songs! They actually had 5 singles not three! Their history is connected to The O'Jays, as their label was formulated by Bobby Massey right after he left The O'Jays and it was distributed by Sylvia Robinson, famous for both The Moments (aka "Ray Goodman & Brown") and The Sugar Hill Gang. It's called research and, even without many pictures, you could have shown a still of both sides of the album cover rather than show a completely black screen through most of the video. I thank you for the focus on the group who, like their contempories, Brighter Side of Darkness and 21st Century, were chiefly known for their big hit and disbanded after a few years of non-success.

Money wins the majority of these lawsuits, also since the group got no royalties you have to ask who actually owns the rights. It was and still is fairly standard practice to screw uneducated talent out of their money with contracts they likely didn’t understand.
Coming back to this video, on UA-cam I’ve seen a lot of things about “lost media” and people doing very intense research for finding lost pieces of media. As you mentioned, there is a lot of lost media surrounding this band and if attention is brought to it more could be uncovered.

I appreciate you attempting to do a deep dive on this obscure topic. Always like when people shed light on music samples.
Here are my recommendations for you to improve.
1 - Your audio is literally only on one side, it is very bad. You really need to improve it to get a chance at making better UA-cam videos. People choose audio over video on UA-cam videos when they're watching.
2 - Although less important, trying to fit any type of related videos can help. I know there is little actual video or pictures of the twins, but just attempting to put related things helps. I'd just watch other long form documentaries on UA-cam to see how they do it.
3 - The title is very niche. You'll just get results from peopel searching the actual sample. If you make a good quality video and have a name bigging it up as "the tragic story behind Kanye and Tyler's greatest samples" or something kind of similar, you could actually get a potential UA-cam algorhythm video.
4 - Better thumnail could help.

Large Professor "Bowne" is the first person to sample Bound
Came across this video ab one of my favorite samples. Liked the info but its a tragic story indeed. But in the vid he says You Send Me was their single but it is not an orginal Ponderosa song so bound is literally the only song that was original. Kind of nuts how good they could have been if managed properly.

Also, Kirk Gardner has been incarcerated at Belmont Correctional Institution since 6/9/1980 for receiving stolen property, felony assault, rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder. He is doing 28 years to life. Spicer has also alleged that Keith Gardner is also incarcerated. Ricky Spicer became a construction worker in the greater Cleveland area and maintained a friendship with Kirk and Keith Gardner.

I like Kanye’s performance on that song but I understand how someone else may not. However, Charlie Wilson’s part on that song was sonically flawless and is not to be disrespected whatsoever😂 Plus, the whole basis of hip hop is paying homage to old songs your parents or grandparents used to play around the house. The actual creator of hip hop, DJ Kool Herc, created it by taking old records, looping the quieter parts of the song, and adding percussion so they could have more of a dancing vibe to them. And then letting the original record come back in which is the beat drop or bass drop.

The Gardner twins are both in Belmont Correctional Institution - Kirk Gardner went to jail on June 9th 1980 for felony assault, rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder facing 28 years to life - Keith Gardner went to jail on Sept 8th 1999 after pleeing guilty to murdering his parents and grandfather facing 3 life sentences. The Pelham twins sadly have since died due to undisclosed reasons. And Ricky Spicer (the only non twin) became a construction worker in the greater Cleveland area and still has a friendship with the still alive Gardner twins.

i understand your point of view. honestly, I can see it from both sides. It really gave ponderosa twins a public eye after being sampled by Kanye but i can also see how it can affect how people view the band as something that someone sampled and not the bands own thing if you know what I mean
What about all the people that found the original song because of the sample? Like it or not sampling brings old music to a new generation and this comment sections proof. So many great LP's I found trying to track down the samples.

The name and the branding was awful, no one can spell ponderosa, to much maths in the album title, the name was to long, to many members, Should of just called it two plus one, and cut the lineup down to one set of twins and the high pitch vocalist (Ricky Spicer).

I.went to school with them at the now defunct Jamison Jr high school, and they really were very talented, just didn't have t it right leadership, from home, or management had a encounter with one, didn't really know who they were, so sorry for their family 😎
