I love the way the older cars "dance" around a circuit. Not as quick or precise or efficient as today's machines, of course, but there's personality and character. We have gained quicker lap times and lost something else in the process.
No traction control, no stability control, no electronic suspension and maybe no power steering.
Real cars that needed real men
"Style" THAT is what was lost. Cars were styled to look good as well as being (somewhat) aerodynamic back in the day. Arguably, the best styled race cars raced between 1960-1972. As for real cars driven by real men... That gets old quick. Men had what they had at the time, they dealt with that, because they didn't know better. And safety took a back seat to everything else. Men today deal with the same task in a different and most importantly safer way. The cars are quicker and are just as fast today as they were in the 60's and team owners also asks pilots to be more efficient, that is still asking a lot of pilots today in a different and probably less "fun" way. Electronic controls just take the fun away of driving, power steering? That is only useful when the car is parked and removes steering "feel" while driving so that would have minimal use in a race, I don't think any race car (should) have it. In the 60's aerodynamics were only starting to be used on the cars to be more efficient and stable going down fast courses. Race cars now have more aero aids to stabilise the cars at speed for safety of both the drivers and the people watching the race. That only evolution, it had to happen. About that thing, safety, the pilot doesn't have to die each time a car crashes either. That's how "real men" and race heros Bruce Mclaren and Ken Miles (how many more???) got killed by the way. Both GT40 pilots.

Nice theory but it's not true. Power steering has very little to do with standing still in a race car.
When you're diving into a corner and forces (braking and lateral) are trying to pull you out of the seat and rip the wheel out of your hands. Then is when you appreciate power steering.
I grew up around race cars and later worked on them as well as drove them.
My uncle drove dirt track cars and without power steering they are almost impossible to drive.
Later I worked on exotic cars and our shop had a race car as well as worked on many, many of them. From Porsche club drivers all the way up to Trans Am.
Power steering allowed for more radical steering geometry since steering force wasn't an issue. More camber, wider tires, less toe in.
Also allowed for higher steering ratio which gave quicker steering

I figured power steering would be a hindrance driving a race car. So you've enlightened me on this subject. Good. Since you grew up around race cars, what do you think about the safety that was added ever since?

First man to make 200 mph in the 1/4th mile...
Neighbors ( Crack welder family... father & sons)
built dragsters and roundy round cars...
I was their "Go-Fer"....
Also worked on sports and open wheel road racers
Drove Volvos and a Porsche 356 to work...
THEY took me to my first endurance races... 1964 -1966..
So I loved ALL the hot cars of the era....
Perhaps hot flat head Ford V-8s a bit more than some....

As they were disappearing for the store bought

GT40 fastest car in the world, one generation later the 917 goes by him like he was standing still. Wow. These cars are driven, front end grip gives way so easy! No downforce to speak of. Just wonderful. He was starting to lose his tyres as well. The content Bozzy brings us is amazing. Thank you!

I really miss the sounds of shifting, the braap of the exhaust, the blip of the throttle etc. Sounds of true racing.
I was there, incredible Week-end, seeing all those legends racing, no hybrids or electrics, pure V8,V10,V12, Flat-6/12 action, the smell of old good racing cars, seeing some childhood Gran Turismo Legends like the 908, the 905, the Esperante GTR-1 and other GT1 cars and even getting close to the Jaguar XJR-9 before they load it in the truck sunday.
Even in the car park and clubs it was awesome, From a Lamborghini Miura to a Citroen 2CV Flat-6 swapped. Truly incredible, the only two sad things were the weather (cloudy, lots of wind with some rain.) and the Howmet TX missing this year. Can't wait for the 2020 edition already.

Edit: watched again and was even more impressed by the 917’s acceleration down the straight.
You can feel the lack of grip, car is just floating on circuit. And it turns just by applying throttle. Driving of GT40 is true art.
Thank you for being able to record this one, those few minutes onboard were magnificent to the ear.

Such a fantastic and amazing piece of art and machinery. The vehicle has so much character, soul and passion. You can't get that feeling, and that character in any vehicles these days.

Shelby didn't design it. In fact he didn't design anything he wasn't an engineer. Great team manager though who knew how to get the best people around him

Been multiple times tot classic le mans. If you love these cars and you live in or near France, I strongly suggest tot visit this event. To hear and feel the gt40's go full throttle at start finish is Just amazing. Everything is virbrating by the sounds they produce: you, everyone around you, the pavement, the tribunes. Just amazing (the classic racing Corvettes and the gt40's have this effect on their surroundings)

The exhaust is only like 13 inches from the headers hence the monstrous sound
Mr.Selex and also the 180 degrees headers setup add a lot of character to the sound
meh length of exahust is more volume than anything, most of the sound is in the lightweight rotating assembly (hence why it sounds so snappy) and 180 degree headers (180s on crossplane V8s create an awesome symphony that sounds like a hybrid of a crossplane and flatplane)

I have a feeling 2 valves/cylinder is also an important ingredient to get this exact sound. Am I right?
@@staLkerhu Some valve timing "overlap" and high compression go a long way towards influencing the sound as well.

This is why I love The Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans, there was beautiful music made on the Mulsanne Straight as the cars were aloud to stretch their legs to top gear. Still how can anyone not like this video is beyond me
