Makes my 68 year old heart go pitty pat ! Absolutely my favourite sports car of all time, especially the Weber carb version. I drew this car on my notebooks as a kid over and over.
British automotive royalty. They were conceived, designed, engineered, built and raced out of Slough, UK by Lola. the MK1,2,3 gt40s were as British as the bowler hat or apple pie. Yeah, apple pie is British too. The MK4 was an American car.
dad brought home a GT 40 MK II , Silver in color, BEAUTIFUL, and making WONDERFUL mechanical SOUNDS, he worked for FoMoCo in NYC public relations. WOW, just the SOUND and in our little suburban enclave in New City ,NY , what a BIG deal. It snowed that Friday night... When I looked out from the upstairs window and said," where did the car go!?..." I'd NEVER seen my father do a BOLT upright run! The snow had blown over the driveway. He was outside with a inverted broom looking for the car! Yes, right hand drive, so after pulling out his back trying to effectively pay the toll on the GW Bridge he had a neighbor commute with him to pass the coin! I have a picture of that silver MkII with wire wheel knock off rims, and would love to hear it at "full-chat" again.
I love this car! My favorite GT40. This chassis started as s/n 1047, but was switched with s/n 1031 (the other Mk IIb) after LeMans in 1967. The sister car (renumbered as 1047) won the 12 hours of Reims after LeMans in 1967 and is currently on display at the Revs Institute in Naples, FL.
The white #6 at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, was also a Ford GT MKIIB. However from this video, it makes you think that it wasn't as much of a MKIIB as the #5 or the baby blue #57 (which won the 12 Hours of Reims a few weeks after Le Mans, wearing #1 livery).
FWIW - Peter Klutt is one of the best drivers I have ever seen. He drove at HSR's Mitty more than a few years ago, and he dominated every race he competed in, usually lapping the field in a seven lap sprint.
Car videos don’t make me cry. This just made me cry. It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s one of my dream cars and I don’t care about not owning a race spec one. I just want the freaking thing. This is the kind of video that really makes me question my life choices. ❤ it’s the first video I watched. I absolutely love it. You guys are getting a subscription.
Years ago I knew where there was a '66 Ford Galaxie convertible with a factory 427cid engine and a 4spd. It was that baby blue color with a white top. Had the 427 engine designation emblems on the fenders. Even as a young kid, I knew exactly what that car had under the hood. Crazy rare car.
Bravo! Have long loved the MkIIBs. As far as LeMans races go, 1967 was a great one too with the All American Win. Love your videos and always enjoy seeing you running your cars at Laguna Seca and Sears Point.
Man, bro did you hear the sound of that beautiful car through the video! Makes me want to hear the sound of it in person… The exhaust note tone was incredible…👍🏾
Thank you Peter! First UA-cam video I have seen on your channel. Stunning photography, especially the stills with the light painting. Glad to discover Legendary Motorcar here. Big fan of the Dream Car Garage TV series!
Have been in love with these cars since they were new. You may notice the "lump" in the roof of the gold version. That's the Gurney Bump, where the engineers literally had to pound the roof up to allow Dan Gurney's helmet to fit in the car.
The Mk2-b has the dash and the plexiglass carb cover that went onto the Mkiv. You can see improvements on this car that ended up on the Mkiv. You should come to the Gt40 60 year reunion this year at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July. It is going to be unbelievable. There will be at least 3 continuation mkiv's there. There also expecting 60-80 Gt40's to attend!!! Great channel and I always enjoyed watching you on motortrend tv!!
What it took to drive and compete at that level in this engineering gem is truly remarkable Imagine a master list -names and backgrounds of the hundreds of individuals that were part of the concepts, designs, builds, testing, innovations, modifications, re- testing, full bore racing …
Thank you. I noticed straight away the brake cooling duty is gone on the engine cover is gone. Also how Dan Gurney/ Jerry Grant car dominated the race in 1966 until the engine expired.
The drivers like Gurney all said the MkI and MkII were very comfortable cars. The luggage and tire rules were because they were supposed to be prototypes of road cars.
Great Video! So Much History In One Car! Yeah, Shelby Was A Genius & I Know There's Other Legendary Cars Out There But I'm An Ol' Guy So, This Is The One For Me. Thank You.
My dad had a '67 Fairlane 500 R code car with a 427 with I believe a Low riser engine...he sold it just before I turned 15 and would have been able to legally drive it...but I snuck out with it a couple times as a 14 year old...once with my buddies when we were camping out in the nearby woods. I snuck into the house at about 3 am and grabbed the keys and we pushed the car until we were probably more than a 1/4 mile away before we started it. I drove it all over our town...it was fast as hell.
The other Ford GT MKIIB was the light blue #57 with the chin spoiler at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans that lead the first 90 minutes of the race. Two weeks later, wearing #1 numbers and entered by Ford of France, it won the 12 Hours of Reims.
I'm surprised he didn't mention that when this car won the pole at Daytona in 1967 with Foyt/Gurney, it was badged as a Mercury. So not only did this car race for Shelby and Holman-Moody, it was also raced as a Ford and a Mercury! if you stop the video at 2:40 you can see Foyt in the car and it says Mercury behind the front wheel where it usually says Ford.
This is certainly my all-time favorite racecar. Besides my dad's car, the GT-40 in the Gulf livery is the one who's in my memory since I was 5 years old. I'm a Chevy guy, I like late-60s/early-70s Nascar, Trans AM, but nothing is as impactful for me as a GT-40
I take it that the third Ford GT MKIIB, the white #6, entered at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, wasn't a full on MKIIB then. Was it destroyed in the crash at the 1967 24 Houts of Le Mans? Or was it repaired and went back to a MKII?
Greetings from Colorado, boys! Hail fellows. Well met! What a story. I found you guys in late spring 2023 as I was preparing mentally and chasing the internet through the new Endurance season, what Le Mans' 100th might mean and how the gods were making crazy sounds around WHAT? FerRARI? Anyway. Le Mans, with the Klutt boys who were participating in a new-fangled, first ever soon-to-be-anniversary of beating the heck out of old LeMans cars was cool. But I thought you guys were just ....what...super rich collectors trying to be the Canadian Jay Leno's Garage? I profoundly apologize and offer large compliments for a coupla things. Like what a great family Peter and his two sons who're his business partners and help Peter prove the adage, "Find something to do for work that you absolutely love and you'll never work a day in your life." I could wax prolifically about how I 'get' all the cool things that make Legendary what it is today. But at age 69.5 and having watched Gary and Peter talking about their shared huge passion for cars while actually documenting the incredible FUN the have together today as well as just what Gary and Tom got up to in late/early '00 century area just playing with what the HECK they could do with by putting CARS on this INtranet machine. And talking about cars, building cars and racing cars...And then talking about cars some more-MILLER TIME! Thank you boys. From the bottom of my heart, I offer my profound wish for fair winds and following seas for your friends and families.
Awesome car !! Did Shelby have to build them right side drive to qualify for European competition or is it practical to be on that side for high speed racing ?
Nerd note, The inboard half-shaft joint is called a tri-pot not a cv joint which would be on the wheel end of the half shaft, the tri pot joint allows the shaft to move in and out as the suspension travels up and down,
I have always thought that the original GT40 was a thing of beauty, and the later iterations lost some of the beauty and lines. I've always wondered if the DOHC Indy V8 would have been a winner in the GT40.
When Mr Ferrari heard that the V8. He must thought oh God in Heaven!!!! And the guys over Lamborghini thought hmmmm if we flip our engine sideways. And take the same shape and different styles. Of the GT40. That same year 1967, the Muria came out. Awesome.
A legendary machine
Makes my 68 year old heart go pitty pat ! Absolutely my favourite sports car of all time, especially the Weber carb version. I drew this car on my notebooks as a kid over and over.
One of the most beautiful race cars ever.
I'm a MOPAR guy, but, there are cars that transcend brand and this is one of them! One of the coolest cars ever made!
To coin Jay Leno, this 1966 GT40 MK11 is part of automotive royalty! Thank you for sharing your auto wisdom with us!
He's not wrong.
*Mark eleven* ??? *Mk2* !!!
*1+1=**#MathIs2*
I could listen to Peter talk about cars forever! He is so knowledgeable and you can honestly tell when a car is really really special to him!
The color the sound of power the pedigree it's racing history and wins this GT 40 is truly Automotive American royalty.
British automotive royalty. They were conceived, designed, engineered, built and raced out of Slough, UK by Lola. the MK1,2,3 gt40s were as British as the bowler hat or apple pie. Yeah, apple pie is British too. The MK4 was an American car.
Wrong.
Lola was out of the picture early on.
Design controlled only by Ford US and Kar-Kraft.@@ForeverNeverwhere1
Thank you for sharing 👌
What a car !! Those headers are absolute artwork.
Certain car designs never get old. This is one of, if not the very best of them all. What a stunning vehicle this is.
I can't stop looking at it it's beautiful and timeless

Man that’s so cool. What a memory to have!
I saw this gorgeous GT40 in person shortly after it was restored, at SAAC-37 Watkins Glen (Jun 2012)
My God, that is pure art. The colors are sublime. omg.
Never even seen this version and I thought I was a GT40 hardcore 😅
Got to see this car in West Palm Beach a few years ago in a yacht dealer's lobby... they were nice enough to let me drool at it for a little while.
Thing is gorgeous. Love the rugged look of that spare pokin out the back. Just inginuty and making things work with the limited space available.

That is one of the best sounding cars that I've heard It sounds nasty.

What an absolutely stunning car. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, Peter. That exhaust is mind blowing!
Doing an amazing job on these new videos. Thanks so much!

My favorite of all Sir.
This was my favorite racing car of all times I grew up watching this on ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS 💯👍👌
I always loved the GT40, it's just beautiful, and the sound!

The sound these make is insane
I've been a fan of the GT40 but I've never seen one in gold before super rare and beautiful 😍 ❤️❤️❤️❤

1966 was a great year ❤
simply magnificent!!!
Wow! What a work of art and engineering genius👌
Saw one on the road yesterday in the UK. it was a G reg in gulf colours.

That sound! Thanks for sharing.
Dream car.
The spare tire in the back is awesome.
Absolutely loving these videos, thanks for taking the time to make these, we need these for future generations
That's a truly unique car! Wonderfully restored by Legendary Motorcar. Thanks for keeping automotive story in a good shape!

This GT40 Mk2b was the inspiration for our continuation GT40 --- so rad!
Thanks for this i wasnt aware that they existed.Great sound as well.
Simply the best of the best.
Nice presentation Peter! I’ve enjoyed all your Extra Exotic Race car features for 30 years now. Keep on Keepin On!!

2:39 why did some races made the teams put tape over the headlights while others didn't?
What a car !
As a former deputy sheriff, I suspect that if you were to take a ride out in the public domain, you would not be hassled.
I hope this gets into vintage LeMans, poles, and wins outright.

P1015 was made an into third full MkIIB. It has since been reverted to its 1966 version.
What a beast! Oh... My!
the sound is tremendous even scary
I didn't realize the 427's were Tunnel port engines...makes complete sense but I had never heard that before.
Is the other MK2-B at Revs institute? I think I’ve seen it.
Nice car
What's the retail on one of those ?
Yep , I want it
