    The AKC has published this study and promotes these recommendations, as well. But, if you check their list of sponsors, Purina is at the top. Purina has mainly been grain based for years and has lost substantial profits to the grain free dog food industry. How about let's do a study on how grain has affected dogs' health over the years. Lol, just check their life expectancy compared to fifty years ago.

      @North Alabama Animal Hospital but their feeds contain the same beet pulp and all the other things that were also "suspected", so it can't be the beet pulp since its found in all of the feeds.
      Like I said earlier;
      According to the FDA Vet-LIRN, 176 dogs diagnosed with DCM and without DCM had both tests run. Of those diagnosed with DCM:
      51 dogs had low taurine status (either whole blood and/or plasma)
      38 had normal taurine status
      27 had high taurine status
      So 65 of the dogs had NORMAL or HIGH taurine levels, 51 dogs had LOW levels (but not zero) all of these dogs were affected. The numbers there prove a lot, that's it's not JUST something like low taurine levels, and it's not as simple as one cause. Dogs also produce their own taurine which precludes the need to "supplement" them with it the way cats are.

      Hey Trevor, We're not familiar with that particular brand of food, but the main thing to be concerned about is that the food is not "grain free." It will indicate on the packaging if it is grain free, if it doesn't say it specifically, then you're fine. Additionally, if you do decide to switch foods, we really like Purina Pro Plan and Royal Canin. Hope this helps! Good luck and let us know if you need any more advice.

      Trevor, if you have to feed dry food, then try Newman’s Own Organic, or Castor and Pollux Organic dry Dog Foods. You definitely don’t want to use Royal Canine or anything Purina, Or you will be keeping your dog constantly making more trips to the veterinarian and making money for them to treat your dogs with more poisonous pharmaceuticals. You can either spend a little more money upfront on good organic dog food, or spend way more money on the backend constantly taking your loved ones to the vet and getting them sicker and sicker. The veterinarians go to school and are taught certain things which they believe to be true. I don’t believe they necessarily set out to hurt your animals. But they do out of ignorance and fail to do the hard work of research to know exactly what the truth is. They need to step up to the plate and quit killing our loved ones with what they were taught in school - which they BLINDLY trust‼️

    I would just like to know why they think grain is the issue. No one can tell us. I feed grain free because the ingredients in grain inclusive diets are terrible and mostly filler, but I have yet to hear anyone say why the lack of grain or introduction of other carbohydrates is detrimental.

    • @HobbyOrganist
      @HobbyOrganist 4 роки тому +1

      It's not the grain-free that's the issue, the issue is suspected to be the replacements for grain, the exotic stuff. But what many seem to miss is that the highest number of these case were all GOLDEN RETRIEVERS another high percentage was mixed breeds (which logically would include Goldens in their makeup as they are extremely popular as a breed) Goldens are also known to have a very high rate of CANCER, so a lot points to a genetic component.

      Dogs require sulfur based amino acids, which come from animal protein, in order to make taurine. If a grain free diet provides the bulk of its protein from plants (pea, potato, etc) and does not have enough of the precursor amino acids to make taurine, the diet will be deficient.

      @@queenbutterfly4888 i would check with a vet to make sure your puppy is well. Your puppy may be depressed...? I don't know what you are trying to feed your shih tzu, but for starters i would go with something bland like chicken and rice cooked. But that is only a short term option, because chicken and rice alone is not optimal nutrition.
      I like to give my recue puppies (i am in dog rescue) RAW chicken wings as snacks.
      BONES MUST ALWAYS BE RAW...NO COOKED BONES EVER!
      Another option: raw chicken or calves liver. I puree' raw liver in the food processor, then add 1 Tablespoon liver puree' per 10 lbs of dogs weight.
      My last idea to encourage your puppy to eat is bacon! 1 teaspoon of warm bacon grease in food almost always does the trick. However, i would not do it long term. Some breeds such as schnauzers have issues with their pancreas and oils can overwhelm them.
      *last tip...serve warm food (not hot) that is releasing a detectable aroma!

    "'Ive heard so many people say "Well, only 560 dogs have been diagnosed with this. & there are millions of dogs, so that's nothing." That number is going up everyday. & that number is ONLY the number of dogs who have been diagnosed & reported to the FDA by a cardiologist. Do you have any idea how many people cannot, or will not, spend the money it costs to take a dog to the cardiologist?? So, imagine how many dogs are going undiagnosed & are just dying from this without their owners ever even knowing! "
    Dogs with this condition show symptoms a vet would recognize, they might not take the dog to a cardiologist for a definitive ddiagnosis/treatment, but it's not a hidden disease.
    Things like beat pulp have been in dog food for decades, so have most of the other ingredients. Peas and lentils can't be THE cause either, because if they were then only the dogs fed those would have this issue and taking them off that diet would reverse the disease, neither is a complete truism- dogs not fed peas and lentils have developed the disease and dogs fed those who have the disease and taken off it don't always reverse course.
    This is also important because it shows this;
    According to the FDA Vet-LIRN, 176 dogs diagnosed with DCM and without DCM had both tests run.

Prior to this he was extremely energetic and we would run together and skijor in the winter. I'm sure the canine food manufacturers had good intent when they created their grain free food lines but since this has been uncovered they have behaved like tobacco company execs being dismissive of any link. Very disappointing. Now, my poor dog's life is in the balance and we're praying for a recovery. For what it's worth my 9 year old female Samoyed hasn't shown any symptoms, but the vet has told us to NOT provide any grain free food to either dogs anymore. Bob Pritchard - Good for you! You care about your loved ones enough to pay attention. Remember that just like humans, each individual has different tolerances to different foods and environmental conditions. You are right about the grain free diets - stick to it!! However, you’ve not taken into consideration that the non-grain portion of your Orijen - the meat portion in particular - is not GMO free. This means all of those pesticides and herbicides in the grain are also in the meat. It is what they feed the cattle, goats, chicken, turkey, etc., that comprise the major protein you feed your loved ones. Remember the food-chain, both for your pets and yourself. Purchase only non-GMO verified pet foods or human foods for your loved ones. The only way to stop this GMO nightmare is by NOT feeding their pocketbooks. If something fails to sell, they will quit making it. It’s all about the almighty buck in this country. Capitalism rules our lives and is killing our planet and its inhabitants. We ARE better than this, but just need to be aware of who and what we really are, and why we are here in the first place......

      Dogs require sulfur based amino acids, which come from animal protein, in order to make taurine. If a grain free diet provides the bulk of its protein from plants (pea, potato, etc) and does not have enough of the precursor amino acids to make taurine, the diet will be deficient.

    As far as I can tell it always comes down to source. What companies do to keep quality, and what others will do to cheapen for profit by benefiting from the "grain-free" advertisement. Currently, what I am seeing is a heart condition problem that is dominantly related to the legumes being a primary additive when beforehand it wasn't like that. Very similar to the previous problems such as corn meal being a dominant additive leading to a plethora of health problems. The better brands are much more focused on wholely sourced meats, and veggies/fruits such as sweet potatoes, pumpkins, blueberries, alternatives that were more costly, but also more recommended for your dogs health. Especially when considering certain conditions such as cancer when things such as sweet potatoes and pumpkins are considered as cancer deterrents. We're demonizing grain free when not all grain free foods are dominantly legume based. And of course what social media does is capitalize on the one thing and create anarchy for something that started out good while misconstruing the real problems that could be better addressed for long term solutions rather than tear down something that was originally a good thing had other cheaper businesses not corrupted that formula with quantity over quality. It really irks me when that happens, cause then it creates a slew of media trash to have to sift through to get to the real heart of the matter. In this case, quite literally.

A dog can also have too much protein. In pitbull puppies and other breeds, it affects the tissue development of their legs.

Otherwise you are just doing the same thing that is done with GMO grains. My dog is a carnivore, is yours? If you're in any doubt have a look at her/his teeth and jaws! That means she's a meat-eater! Dogs haven't evolved to eat grains, neither have humans. Dietary grains have been around only since agriculture appeared about 10,000 years ago.
    Assuming that dogs have been our best friends since we emerged that's 1.99 million years of evolution on a diet predominantly of hunted meat (= protein & fat, no carbs). It's well known that grains and wheat, in particular, are all but toxic to humans. Try reading Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis, and The Obesity Code by Dr Jason Fung, or suss out their UA-cam lectures.
    In addition to processed carbohydrates, wheat and grain-based diets account for 4/5 of us being obese and 2/3 being Type 2 diabetic or about to be. It all stems from the rubbish science of Dr Ansell Keys and the FDA promulgated Standard American Diet along with its silly inverted pyramid from 50 years ago. Nutritionists and primary health-care have been in fairy-land ever since. I see no reason why vets wouldn't be in the same boat. Hence, it's wiser to do the precise opposite of what is advised by any of them when it comes to nutrition.
    Oh, by way of example, based on Dr Davis and Dr Fung's books, I've reversed my Type 2 diabetes (in 12 weeks) and now sport a "healthy" BMI, having been morbidly obese for the last 50 years. Does my GP get it? Not really - he said, "I'm glad you've found something that works for you". Did the vet get it yesterday when she "warned" me about grain-free pet-food, and I told her that based on likelihood, I didn't believe a single word of it? No, she just got angry, had no counter-argument and certainly wasn't going to debate the issue! Worse, she didn't even get the carnivore point even though she'd just cleaned my 2-year-old dog's teeth under GA! Made we wonder who was paying whom and for what!

      If it is from the food, there must be a component that relates to area of origin for the ingredients. Im honestly not sure, just a guess. If it is somehow related to diet than this would be a huge revelation, since we have not pin pointed the cause of this disease in humans.
