Gordon McCarter’s granddaughter here. Can confirm that Cowher called him the next day to apologize because my grandpa didn’t throw the flag, his line judge did. He was an extremely fair official and kept his cool no matter what, proven here.

I was a referee for high school, youth, NAIA Collegiate and Arena-the umpire and I count the offense, my deep officials count the defense, it’s that simple. Your grandfather was a GREAT referee and should’ve had at least one Super Bowl on his resume. Very few seasons was he not assigned a postseason assignment. So sorry you lost him 20 years ago-71 is 10-15 years too young. Hopefully you have many fond memories of him.

I know I get pissed off when there's a bad call against the Vikings (there have been many), but it diminishes the win when there is a blown call against your opponent. Sometimes the refs just phone it in and don't really try. This is one of those times.
